Disk erase / partition running for 30 hours and counting

Hi all !
Im posting on behalf of the logged in person
His Macbook pro 13" just started going VERY slow overnight, Startup - 10min, open app - 3/4min etc
He took it to an Apple store - they concluded the HDD is faulty
and they quoted him ZAR4000 to replace the drive ( the Samsung drive they quoted on typically sells for ZAR650 )
He rejected the quote as it was too expensive, that is when I got involved
I took the existing 500GB Toshiba drive out and put it through a battery of tests - all passed
I then took a brand new Western Digital 500 GB HDD, installed it, went through the steps to load OSX
The unmount action takes 30 odd min, the erase / partition / format runs for days
That 1st attempt took in excess of 3 days ( round the clock ) to get it running,
but with the new hdd & clean install - still as slow as ****
(any version of OSX, up to the latest - same results )
I then installed an old 100GB Intel SSD - everything was lightning fast and the system was up & running in 3 Hours
In the last 2 weeks I have tried different conventional HDD's - they all take ages to load & once done - is very, very slow
Is there something im not aware of in terms of HDD's specifically compatible with Mac ?
Any ideas pls guys

Upon rechecking Time Machine using the MacBook pro wirelessly, the backups appear to be available and I can restore files.
Though I don't know if I can do a system restore as per my original question.
Correct. If the backups are indeed corrupted, as they appear to be, you may or may not be able to do a full system restore. It just depends on where the corruption is, and there's no way to determine that.
An option would be to boot from your Install disc, erase your internal HD, and install OSX. When your Mac restarts, try using +Setup Assistant+ to restore your settings, apps, users, and data, per the green box in #19 of Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
If that doesn't work, erase your disk and install OSX again, but this time don't transfer anything. Set up a temporary user account (using a different name than any that are on your backups). When your Mac reboots, use +Migration Assistant+ (per the pink box in #19) to bring things over, one group at a time. If it hangs on one group, make a note of what didn't transfer, and go on to the next. Then use the normal Time Machine "Star Wars" display to restore the missing items selectively. You may very well get most of your data that way.

  • No Internet for 63 hours and counting

I live in Finchampstead, Wokingham. It’s an area of Wokingham not far from Reading & Bracknell where a lot of the Major IT companies of the world have an Office.
I bring this up in case you think my house is halfway up a mountain or where the nearest neighbour is 5 miles away.
I can comfortably state that we have not had an internet connection up for more than a week in the last 5 years, except for about 6 months 2 years ago. Granted most of the time I leave it a couple of hours and it does come back but I have never seen the router display more than 7 days connection in a row.
BT as a company is fine, when there are problems that people know about then they are answered quickly and without fuss, however when you get a problem that does not fit the carefully worded script that the BT Internet front line support people in India HAVE to follow then we have a major breakdown and BT falls apart.
My latest communication with BT ran as follows:
Friday (7th December @ 17:25) the Broadband link light went out, it then went through the following sequence:
    Light out
    Light blinking orange
    Light blinking blue
    Light Solid blue
15 seconds pass (just enough time to get connected back again)
    Light goes out
    The sequence repeats
I rang the BT Internet help line and after waiting for 45 minutes was told that all their computers were down and could I call back on Saturday.
Saturday (8th December @ 08:00) Called BT Internet helpline again
After 52 minutes got connected and ran through the script.
Change filter (I have bought 44 new filters now over the years)
Plug telephone cable into master socket (it goes down so often it is always plugged into the master socket)
    Reset the router
The BT front line person then runs a line test and calls me back after 4 minutes-approx. 9:10.
“Yes they can see a fault on the line I will escalate it to Network support”
I am then told that BT Network support team are so busy that I can’t get a call until 9PM Sunday night! What!!!!!!!
I have, however, learnt a long time ago that if that’s the time then that’s the time and there is no point in arguing, the poor front support staff just repeat the same thing over and over until you accept it, trying to argue with then would be like trying to have an argument with my dog, pointless, so it is accepted and they say if the situation changes to call back.
I ring back on Saturday evening @ (8th December @ 6:30PM) as now the broadband light has gone out altogether. After a 40 minute wait I am told that the network support team has gone home but they would pass the message on.
Sunday (9th December - Morning) as I can’t do my Christmas shopping on the internet I have to go out Christmas Shopping.
When I get home we have a message that BT Network Support has telephoned but we were out, and they would call back in the evening.
Sunday (9th December – afternoon) go out again, this time get back by 7:30PM.
Another message has been left to say that Network Support has called, and as we are not in they assume that the connection is OK.
I call back at 8PM and after going through the script again for 10 minutes I am told that I need to speak to the second line Network Support, they would put me through.
Am on hold for 45 minutes before getting cut off
I ring back but am told that the Second Line network support team had closed at 8:30PM, whilst I was on hold.
I rant a bit at the poor chap who has to answer for the other department’s complete inability to provide any kind of customer service. He listens patently (bless him) but explains it would be best to call back in the morning.
Monday 10th December (Have been cut off for 63 hours now)
My wife rings the support line and is told that the earliest anyone can look at the problem is Wednesday 12th December 2012 and we will have to be without Internet until then.
On top of all this we are “scheduled” for a BT Infinity (I must be a sucker for punishment) to be installed on Friday 14th December 2012. (I have a bet with my father in law for £100 that it is not going to take place. The last time an engineer was due around our house we had a call at 3:30PM from a cross lady who said the engineer had called at our house at 4PM (30 minutes in the future) and we were not at home, and despite it being 30 minutes in the future and that she was speaking to me on my home number would not accept that a) I was at home & b) it wasn’t 4PM yet.
Unfortunately what has passed is a common exchange between us and BT.
So I have some of questions:
What is the process so complicated?
Why do I need to contacted all the time, I am not a child, I trust that when you say you are going to look into the problem you will, all this when you could be mending the problem?
What does the Network Support team need to speak to me when the problem has been diagnosed as being at the Exchange?
Why do Network support arrange for calls to happen AFTER they are closed?
Why does it take 3 days to get an engineer appointment to visit the Exchange, they are there all the time, am I being put the “naughty step” for daring to be out when I should be at home waiting for BT who may or may not call?
Why do I have to wait until Wednesday for get any kind of internet connection, maybe?
Rather than spend all this effort, which on Friday will become redundant, on mending the appalling internet connection when you could send the Infinity engineer around earlier? Believe me we can make sure someone is at home if needed.
Why, every time I have a problem do I have to go through this madness, it is hugely time intensive on my part and must be the same for you, if you didn’t spend half the time try to get in touch with people then you could spend time on mending the problems?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Thanks for the info.
I will have to try an alternative route to get to BT.
BT OpenReach don't provide any support to end users, they hide behind their relationship with the suppliers, BT Internet in this case, and tell them nothing so they can’t support their customers.
In the real world this type of work model would become extinct; it is only because there is no other alternative can BT Open Reach get away with such disgraceful customer service. I bet that if Virgin Media started digging up the road BT would be round like a shot, otherwise their customers would migrate in drives.
As for the bad weather, it’s a non excuse. We are lucky to have had a little rain in the area but by no means the extent of the rest of the country so unless the local engineers are commuting then they are around somewhere.
As you can tell I have had a bellyful, I have heard every excuse and reason from BT Internet, BT Open Reach and whoever else takes my money under the title "BT".

  • Charging for 2 hours and counting

Hey, i just got my new iPod Shuffle and I have done all of the steps correctly, I think. I hooked It up after loading the newest iTunes. Why is it taking sooo long?

The iPod shuffle takes approx. 2 hours to charge to 80 % and around 4 hours to charge fully, the first time. Your patience will pay off.

  • Nano has been updating for eight hours and counting...

I started to update my Nano over eight hours ago and it's still not done...it's the latest update and I figured I'd better do it. The first time I tried to update it, I got an 'unknown error' message, then tried again. Is the update just not working and if so, would it be bad to disconnect the iPod if it never finishes updating? iTunes does not display the iPod under 'Devices'. This is the first time I've tried to update my iPod. It doesn't normally take this long to update, right?

    hi
i had the same problem with my nano i think it is something to do with the actual update and not the nano's. what i did to make it stop was when you plug your ipod in the computer when the update flashes up dont accept. add music and artwork or whatever you need to put on the ipod and then click on devices where the ipod should be and on the front page click update and after a minute or two mine updated and worked. maybe a lucky coqincisdence but if it dont work just keep on trying.
    hope it works

  • Firefox 5.0.1 update-recommended to update-runs for 24 hours until I stop it because it never downloads-have tried numerous times.

I keep being recommended by a pop-up window to download Firefox 5.0.1 for my MacBook Pro. I have tried numerous times--even letting it run for 24 hours and it still does not complete. Then a day or two later it asks me again. What do I do to get it to download.

If you have problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop

  • I am trying to erase all contents on my iphone 4, its been running for 6 hours now, is this normal?

I am trying to erase all contents on my phone, I am trying to get it back to factory settings,  I don't have any jailbreaks or anything like that on my phone, The circle thing has been running for six hours now, is this normal? Before I did that, I tried to do it through itunes, and it would not restore it through there either? Im at a loss?? That took only like 5 min before it says sorry it could not be restored. This is taking forever....

    Hello Stephiworld,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!
It sounds like you are trying to restore the phone to its factory defaults but the process is stalled or the phone is totally unresponsive.
If the phone will respond to the Sleep/Wake button, I would turn it off the normal way, then turn it back on.
iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
When it turns back on try the Erase All Content and Settings option again.
If the iPhone is completely unresponsive and will not turn off normally, I would reset the device with this process from the above article:
If your device stops responding, you can reset it by pressing and holding both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    Cheers,
    Sterling

Having purchased Adobe Acrobat XI Pro Mac Download, and installed the program with Adobe Download Assistant, the program is loaded but the status bar has continued to run for 15 hours with a message underneath stating "Extracting...this might take a while".  Also, a warning message appeared during download stating "The following disk images couldn't be opened"; (Image) AcrobatPro_11_Web_W, (Reason) error -4960.  How do I complete this download?

Check for the Internet connection. If its good, then try the same with a different broswer. Below link would help in this scenario,

Thanks for the straightforward tip. I had restarted once already, but the second time was a charm. The install button now works. Don't know if it mattered, but I also repaired disk permissions and then restarted in safe mode this time.
The printer driver is apparently a different issue in itself. It turns out that the my printer, the HP Deskjet F380, has some fluke that makes it incompatible in 10.6. A new driver is coming out from HP according to Rickmeister in this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10076690&#10076690
In case anyone else has the same problem with the F380: Like the user in the aforementioned thread, I downloaded and installed the old HP drivers for 10.5, and now at least I can print in the meantime.

  • SystemCenterDTSPackageTask runs for 10 hours +

    Hello,
The process SystemCenterDTSPackageTask is running for 10 hours+ everyday... it ends successfully but the 14-Day History is never showing in the dashboard...
I noticed two task taking most of the time
    Step 'DTSStep_ExecuteSQLTask_SC_EventParameterFact_View_1_Insert' succeeded
Step Execution Started: 8/11/2014 5:58:03 AM
Step Execution Completed: 8/11/2014 11:04:40 AM
Total Step Execution Time: 18396.277 seconds
    Progress count in Step: 0
    and
    Step 'DTSStep_ExecuteSQLTask_SC_EventTypeDimension_View_1_Insert' succeeded
Step Execution Started: 8/11/2014 1:33:12 AM
Step Execution Completed: 8/11/2014 4:53:04 AM
Total Step Execution Time: 11991.672 seconds
    Progress count in Step: 0
this does not seem correct. Where to look for clues about this??
From the two views having delays during the task run:
Reviewing the tables and Views apparently the SC_EventParameterFact_Table is HUGE!!! 308 millions rows…

308 Millions rows in the table is it not an issue for the process to handle this? Should it not be purge? Cleared somtime?
Treating 308 Millions rows and trying to insert more is it not an issue which could interfere with other process?
SC_EventTypeDimension_View is only 9 rows and to do an insert it takes 3 hours!!!
any idea about this which seems to be an issue?

  • Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 Family- 'extracting' for 24 hours and I can't cancel it and start again

    Hi
I've been trying to download the trial of Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 Family for 24 hours now. It downloaded in Adobe Download Assistant fine and the it started 'Extracting'. Its been extracting for 24 hours and the close or pause buttons next to it are not available to press so I can't stop it and try again.
A message half way through did pop up saying 'opening premier pro, verifying...' but then a warning sign came up saying 'the following disk images couldn't be opended. Reason: Invalid Checksum' . Don't know if that has anything to do with it but on Adobe Download Assistant it is still 'Extracting'.
I am working on a year old Macbook Pro with a fast connection to the internet.

  • Exception Thrown When a Scheduled Task Runs for Many Hours

In the Oracle documentation here (http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E10391_01/doc.910/e10367/toc.htm#CACGBDAD) it states that the below exception can get thrown when a scheduled task runs for many hours (on OAS) and can be ignored:
Primary Server went down going to get a fresh object elsewhere in the cluster.
    com.evermind.server.rmi.RMIConnectionException: LRU connection
Just want to find out from other users that get this error (If there is any), have you found the scheduled task actually completes, then the error is thrown or what?
I just don't feel comfortable that one of our tasks is completing properly due to this exception occuring and causing the task to stop midway through processing...

    Hi,
I've had trouble with scheduling PowerShell scripts in the past as well. You can try running your script in the SYSTEM context by launching a cmd prompt this way, just to verify that the issue isn't related to the account itself:
    http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jmarcum/archive/2010/08/25/150872.aspx
This method does require PSExec, there's a link to the tool in the post if you don't already have it on hand.
You can also start PowerShell as SYSTEM and play around if you need to:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/ben_parker/archive/2010/10/28/how-do-i-run-powershell-exe-command-prompt-as-the-localsystem-account-on-windows-7.aspx?Redirected=true
Not the best answer, but hopefully it helps shed a little light on the issue.
    Good luck.

I love the portability my powerbook gives me. You can use a PB in your setup. You can run an external monitor for either PB or MBP. You can node. Universal Binary menas it is an application which has the components written for both PPC and Intel chips-so you don't need to do conversion. Nodes won't require you buy a nother license. so the answer is down to how much the 2 upgrades and 1 crossgrades will set you back vs how much use you'll get out of them. IMO the iMac is inexpensive (I mean that in a good way-worth hooding on to). Maybe just look at a refurb PB unless you really have the extra cash.
