Disk utility, spotlight, software update... none are working.

A mix of problems have developed lately. I assume they're connected, although perhaps not.
1) I can't repair permissions. It begins properly, then goes forever and forever until I quit (or force quit) Onyx.
2) Disk Utility won't, er, activate? I open it, and then it's "Gathering Disk Information" forever. ("Forever" = several hours). It never reads any of the disks, so I can't repair permissions that way, or do any of the Disk Utility functions. This happens whether I start Disk Utility from my main hard drive, from a backup clone, or from the Tiger startup disk. It doesn't fail--it just keeps going.
3) Software update begins when I ask it to, the blue bar scrolls along, and then it goes no further. No crashing, no completion, just quietly musing away.
4) Spotlight can't find anything: "No results found" for everything. I see others have this problem, so maybe it's not connected.
5) I've tried to reinstall Tiger from the startup disk, but I can't do that either: I click on Agree, then the computer starts "Selecting Destination", and all the different drives are there, but grayed out--and the computer just keeps thinking, with the little wheel spinning.
For all of the above, Activity Monitor doesn't indicate a freeze--they all need 2-3% of the processor, and there's no memory leak or anything.
I'm very confused about my hard drive clone (on a 350GB external SeaGate). I have the same problems when I boot through that drive, which suggests this isn't a hardware problem. Or at least, not a disk problem. A processor one? Oh, what do I know... I'm way out of my depth here.
However, all applications seem to be working properly!
I'm not too sure about the history of these problems. I'd been having iTunes library problems for a while that may have been hiding these issues from me; I certainly started noticing these problems in the past 2-3 weeks, so the connection to 10.4.11 probably isn't coincidental.
Any help would be really appreciated. The PowerBook G4 is getting a little old, but I'm hoping to hold off on a new computer for a while yet. Thanks!

I APPEAR to have resolved the problem (I hadn't posted yet because things only got sorted out yesterday, so I'm not certain this is done with yet).
What I did: I turned off Sleep Mode and kept the computer on all night. I presume this let the daily maintenance script run--it's set to run at 3am, I think. (I'm not sure if I ever tried to run the scripts alone through Onyx; I don't think I did--I think I just tried to run a big batch of operations, which was foolish of me.)
The next morning, things still weren't right--no Spotlight, for example--but I was able to open Disk Utility, which I hadn't been before. That let me Verify Disk, repair permissions, and so on. For the rest of the morning I kept repeating things again and again--Disk Utility and (unneeded) disk repair from Tiger start-up disk, complete clean-up through Onyx, etc--and each time more functionality seemed to come back. There were steps backwards--Disk Utility wouldn't open again for a bit--but something else was working, and with another reboot, it'd be back. I can't remember the order I did this in, but I also made sure to run, individually, each of the maintenance scripts (through Onyx).
Eventually everything seemed to be back in order. A day and a half later, and all things still seem to be OK.
Curiously, through all of the clean-up/ mop-up--actually, through ALL of this mess--there were never any error messages. No spinning pizzas, no freezes; just blue bars and "clockhand circles" (what are those called?!) that never ever finished.
So, I suggest either making sure the computer is on all night, or running the daily maintenance script (you can run it through Onyx, and presumably other ways that I don't know about).
A moral of the story: those maintenance scripts appear to have solved the problem, whereas repairing permissions didn't.
(I find it oddly amusing that, out of all the things I tried to do, the one that finally succeeded was just leaving the computer on and letting it take care of itself.)

  • Automatic software update – won't work (10.6.8)

    Dear all,
my automatic software update has stopped working. It shows me the software that will be updated, starts the download, then the computer restarts and I type in my username and password – and then everything is back to what it was before. None of the listed softwares has been updated, and I can't find the reason it doesn't install any of these. There is no error message.
I've tried deleting the respective .plist file, but nothing has changed.
I work on a Mac Book where Snow Leopard 10.6.8 is installed.
I would be greatful for any helpful comments or step-by-step guides – I've tried to update some of the software manually but I would love the automatic update to work again.
    Best,

Niel, thanks for your response.  I have been very wary of downloading Mavericks on this machine.  I don't feel it has the power to run it and I'm afraid it was slow it down terribly.  It was bought in late 2008.  It's fine for my purposes at this time…just holding on until I buy a new one.  I have the same problem others have with autofill not working, so I was trying to see if an update would help that situation.  Grace

  • Widgets, Safari, Software Update -- All not working since I got Comcast

My Dashboard, Safari and Software Update have not worked since I got Comcast internet. I'm pretty sure their installer screwed up something, but I don't know how to undo it. Firefox, Adium, Mail and other internet applications all work great.
I tried to fix the Software Updater problem a while ago and was able to get it to see what is available (by adding swquery.apple.com to the sites that bypass proxy settings), but it still refuses to download anything.
I can't help but think there's one thing that's causing all this trouble. Any thoughts?

You can have up to 5 computers authorized at one time with iTunes. There's no reason to deauthorize until you want to go over the limit. You can do this once a year. Do a clean install of the OS on the mac you are selling.

  • I have an external hard drive that shows up in disk utility but Verify and Restore are greyed out.

I have an external hard drive that shows up in disk utility but Verify and Restore are greyed out. I am trying to determine what is wrong with the drive.
I need the data on the drive and it won't show up in Disk Warrior. I have tried different Mac's and different USB cords only to find the same outcome. When selected in Disk Utility the information read as such...
Disk Description : WD Elements 1023 Media                      Total Capacity : 500.11 GB (500,105,740,288 Bytes)
Connection Bus : USB                                                               Write Status : Read/Write
Connection Type : External                                                     S.M.A.R.T. Status : Not Supported
USB Serial Number : 575837314135304D36373132        Partition Map Scheme : Unformatted
As the drive shows in Disk Utility there must be some life left in it surely. There is a possibilty that the physical connection between the USB cord and the external drive is damaged but since the drive shows up I believe it's unlikely... before I give it to the pro's is there anything else I can do to diagnose the issue?

    Hello,
I have just experienced the same thing!
Although my external drive shows in Disk Utility, it does not show in Finder.
And the Verify/Repair buttons are also greyed out.
Also, although the drive is 2TB. DU shows it as having Total Capacity of only 4.14GB! (Which should be the Free Space).
I was wondering if you solved your problem, & if so, would you share your solution.
I´m afraid to Erase in case I lose all my Data on the drive.
Thanks in advance for your reply!

Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.
If you wish, you may be able to salvage the malfunctioning extension by uninstalling and reinstalling it. That will revert its settings to the defaults.

My iPod touch is not connecting to my iCloud account, under iCloud settings it  has my old email account and username that I have since updated and are working correctly on my iPad, any idea how I can reset this on the iPod or otherwise? This old account info keeps coming back on my iPod and messing up access to my apple account and now the icloud. last time a system restore needed to be done to fix it....

It won't give me the option to sign out of the old account, it's that light grey color that you can't click on. And since it has the old email address that it's telling me to go into to verify the account, I can't actually change it... I'm stuck

  • How do I change desktop folder/safari pictures to registered business icons, I have tried almost every how to  on-line but none are worki?  I have treing. First how do I get the icon I need from the website and then what?

How do I change Mac desktop folder/safari pictures to registered business icons? I have tried almost everythin but none are working.  First how do I capture the business icon from the website, then what?

OK, well to start with, you must have the icon file in the correct format. You need to end up with an .icns file. One of the how-to articles should tell you how to do this - iConvert will also do it.
If it is in the correct format, when you click the icon file to highlight it, and click cmd-i, you will see the Get Info window - at the top left, you should see a mini version of the icon. If you do NOT see that icon correctly, the file is not the correct format. So this will not work for a jpg or png file, for example.
Once you have this window open, go to the thumbnail, click it to highlight it blue, and click cmd-C to copy.
Go to your Safari app from the Applications folder (not from the dock), again click cmd-i to open its Get Info window, and again click its icon to highlight it blue. Now click cmd-V to paste. You will be asked for your admin password to authenticate. The icon should now become the one you've pasted in.
You may need to log out and back in for the effect to show on the application file itself.
You might also want to look into Candybar if you plan on doing a lot of icon customization.

  • Not connecting to Music Store or Software Updates (but Internet works fine)

About a month ago, I moved in to a new apartment and set up a new cable internet connection. After a very frustrating installation process (Netgear is not very Mac-friendly), the Internet worked. A couple days later, I realized I couldn't get onto the iTunes Music Store. It just tries for a while and then says it can't reach it and for me to check my Network Diagnostics.
I tried to get to the music store when I was at work on an Ethernet connection (as opposed to my usual wireless), but that didn't work either. I also realized today that my Software Updates aren't working, because they cannot connect either. It just tells me to click on Network Diagnostics, which I always do to no avail.
Also tonight, I realized I only have 4.5 GB space left on my computer. This computer is less than a year old, and I don't see how this is possible. I deleted a lot of things, and that didn't make any difference. Could I possibly have a virus? I thought Macs didn't even get viruses!? What should I do?

I got this message from you, but I still have the same problem of not being able to connect to the iTunes store, software updates, Safari, CDDB, Help, Southwest's Ding, my weather widget, and several other things. I found a post you did in July where you helped someone else who it sounded like had the same problems that I am having. However, I tried your approaches to that -- isolating the problem (it affects all accounts on this computer), typing in that number (17.254.3.183) in Safari (says the server stopped responding), and now I really hope I don't have to back up everything and start over. I think this started when I moved to this apartment and set up a new Comcast cable internet account. I have been able to live with it because I have a computer at work and spend most of my time there anyway, but at times when I want to burn CDs, it really drives me crazy. Do you recommend taking it to the Apple store or would you be able to help me? Thanks.

I upgraded to Mavericks and now some of my utilities --- such as disk utility and system information no longer work. I find Disk Utility useful and would like to have it. Doesn't Makericks include

Boot into your recovery partition (restart, hold down ⌘R until you see the Apple logo), and use Disk Utility to repair your hard drive. Repair permissions too while you're there. OS X: About OS X Recovery
If that doesn't work, I'd reinstall Mavericks over your current installation.

My software update does not work: the icon jams and then times out, although web is online. How to resolve??

    Snow Leopard DVD:
You can get it only by phone now from Apple.
In the US, call 1-800-MY-APPLE and ask for a sales assistant. Last quoted price was $19.99 for the single-user and $29.99 for the family licence.
For other countries, check here; http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
Don't forget to ask for Sales; the tech support guys can't help.
When you've installed SL it will be 10.6.3. You need to update that to 10.6.8 with the combo installer from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399 - that gives you access to the Mac App store.
Lion is only available by phone also - same number and they'll give you a download code to use in the Mac App Store.
If you're going to Mountain Lion you don't need to install Lion first - you can do it straight from Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
    Specifications;
    Snow Leopard 10.6.x:
    Lion 10.7.x;
    Mountain Lion 10.8.x:
    As for Lion, but also must be one of these groups;
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminium, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)

  • Some software update deployments are expired

Some software update deployments are expired (gray icon) but some are not. Why is this so? There are no expired software updates in software update group.

Curious:  go ahead and search within the group for expired updates.  Do they show up in the filter?  Or is it a definite display bug?
If that were the case, then all of the deployments for that group would be grey but the screenshot shows only about half are actually grey.
It could be some type of age thing where after 30 days (or something like that) they are shown greyed. That doesn't make much sense paritcularily based upon the dates shown in the screenshot, but I can't see anything else that would cause it.
Note that in my lab most of my older deployments on update groups are also grey but there are no expired updates in the update group deployed so I am seeing the same behavior.

  • Software Update no longer working

    Hi everybody,
It seems that Software Update on my mac has mysteriously stopped working. Running the actual application just gives a message that there aren't any updates available. I checked the log in System Preferences, and it seems that the latest update that I got was the daylight savings time update on March 6th.
On a similar thread, whenever iTunes loads, it says that version 7.1.1 is available, and asks if I want to update. When I click yes, it sends me to Software Update which finds nothing.
Any idea why this would be happening, and how I can fix it? Everything else on my computer seems to be running normally. I'm on an iMac G5 1.9GHz w/ 1.5GB ram, running Mac OS 10.4.8, and I have about 80GB of free space. I'm trying to run updates logged in as admin, so that's not the problem. I've run Disk Utility, and there are no errors with the hard drive. Just to be safe, I ran Repair Permissions.
I've tried installing the updates directly from Apple's site (downloading the PPC versions of the 10.4.8 and 10.4.9 updates and combo updates), but when I try to run the installer, they all have a stop sign with an exclamation mark over the drive with the ever so helpful error message "You cannot install Mac OS X Update Combined (PowerPC) on this volume. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update." The installer's log shows no hints as to what these requirements may be. I downloaded the iTunes 7.1.1 installer from Apple's website, and it fails saying that it can't install for an 'unknown reason.'
Any help would be incredibly appreciated. I've been trying to fix this for days, and I'm about ready to throw this computer out the window. My best guess as to the root of the problem is some software that I've installed, although my system is pretty bare. Beyond the default applications that it came with, I've installed XCode and Microsoft Office 2004, as well as some smaller apps like Adium, Colloquy and Firefox.
    Thanks,
    Martin.

This error can occur if your hard drive requires repair. Do this:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    Now try installing the updates.
