Display went grey?

Hello- I have a early 2008 Mac Pro and just recently the screen started freezing up after restarting the computer twice the screen now goes grey with blue lines running down it. My question is "do in need a new video card? Upon start up I do see the grey apple and it loading but after that nothing but grey screen.
If someone could assist me with what wrong that would be great!

The plot thickens. I reverted back to the bios that came with the motherboard, no difference. On a cold start-up the bios does not recognize the presence of the All-in-Wonder pci-e. I tried another power supply, no difference. Then I stumbled across something really strange. I needed some files that where trapped on the videoless pc. So, I let it boot and used remote desktop to get at the files I needed. Then just for laughs I used shutdown -r from a command prompt to restart the sick pc. The video started right up when it rebooted. After restart the pc ran all day without any video issues. It has been four days now and this behavior is repeatable. I boot the sick pc, the video card is not detected, I remote desktop in, make it do a restart and I have video. For the life of me I can't imagine what the difference would be between a cold start and a restart. Anybody have any ideas ??

24" iMac from 2008 display went grey

A couple days ago I noticed white single pixel height horizontal lines flickering all over my display. I restarted the computer and it stopped but started again the next day. Seemingly random flickering continued until suddenly the entire display went grey-ish. Restarting does not help. Thanks for any help!

Sounds exactly like what happened to my 24". The grapphics card is going bad. Most likely it will need to be replaced which can by done DIY for $250-$350. When mine first went bad I was able to use SMC Fan Control to increase the speed of the CPU fan, which would stop the freezing. Over time I needed to gradually increase the speed of the fan to keep using it. It lasted another 3 months or so before the card totally failed.
All 24" iMacs had removable GPUs, so repair is possible without replacing the entire Logic Board. There probably won't be very many choices as to what card you can use. Sometimes the cards pop up on eBay, sometimes they are cheaper elsewhere. Although it uses an industry standard graphics slot, it simply won't work with a graphics card that's not specifically made for your model. When the NVIDIA chip went bad in my 2008 24" I chose to replace it with a cheaper and technically inferior ATI chip, because the same thing could have happened again, and graphics performance is not a big concern of mine. I got it from cwioutlet.com.

MacBook display went blank...

The display on my month-old MacBook just went blank a few minutes ago. Closed screen, sleep light came on, opened, sleep light went off but still no display... I held down the power-key until the display went from grey to dead-black-off, waited a bit, then turned it back on and it seems to be okay now; what I want to know is, one, is this a known issue with the newest MacBooks, and two, is it something I should drag him down to the Apple Store ASAP to have looked at? (IE, is this common and going to happen again and again unless I see to it, or was it some transient blip?) It's been a desktop machine for its entire life thus far, so it's not as if it's getting physically banged around that connections could already be loose if they didn't pretty much start out that way...

Just had this happen too! Did the software update, rebooted and it's blank. I can boot into single user mode, that works, booting verbosely gets to a certain point then goes blank.
I've tried resetting pram. no help. i can't figure out how to boot this from an external drive either (no firewire port! how smart was that?)

boot your MacBook Pro into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Is your display still grey?

I was working on a project a few days ago and now I'm not getting any audio or visuals out of it. In the project file the screen went grey. Not sure how to fix this. I'm new to iMovie, but the program seems easy to use and my Mac is new. Any help?

I used to use Movie Maker and it would be able to handle lots of file uploads and big projects. I figure iMovie can do the same since it's newer and it's on my iMac. I was working on a project for a few months, it was working fine up until about a few days ago when the project file just stopped working. Not getting any audio or visuals and the screen went grey. I hope to not lose the project file as I've spent a lot of time on it. The project will still show up in iMovie, but it won't play. Other project files will, but this one won't for some reason. It's my first time using this program and I assumed it would be fine, but now it's causing me big problems. Anyone else run into a similar problem?

But it is I jsut can sync, back up files, or anything becuase its stuck at this screene and wont do execute when i click either of those button

I think mine are all still in alphabetical order, but :
* movies I deleted from my library and told "hide this purchase in the cloud" are showing up again. If I try to play them, I get the "cannot find the file in its proper location, would you like to locate it" error message.
* for movies that have "iTunes Extras," the extras show up as a separate item, with another copy of the movie artwork. Most of these I believe I had DELETED the "iTunes Extras" anyway.
* Items are showing up multiple times.
* A few MUSIC ALBUMS are listed in my Movies section.
* Some movies (I believe ones that I deleted off my HD but are still in the cloud) are showing random album covers instead of their proper artwork.
* Just rented a movie, and it didn't show up anywhere in my library. It downloaded properly and completely, was in a suitably labeled folder in my iTunes/Media/Movies section, but didn't show up in any section of the library (or via a library search). Had to manually find it and tell it to open the file using iTunes.
Running the latest version, even checked for updates. No other changes made lately since the last round of apple software updates. This was wonky before the latest small update to iTunes - now it's even wonkier. And it is very, VERY effing annoying.

I tried to take a screen shot of the error message for reference, and it gave me a message saying I couldn't because I didn't have access to the files where it would normally store the shot.
Attached to my computer at the time was my Seagate Free Agent Go-Flex for Mac backup drive.
So, I closed any open applications, and restarted my computer. But it wouldn't restart. It only displays a grey screen with a flashing icon in the middle of a folder with a question mark on it.
I have no idea what happened - I wasn't using the machine any differently than usual, and it only had a few basic applicaitons open in addition to InDesign (like Preview, Text Edit, Microsoft Word, iCal).
I have MacKeeper on my MacBook, and I keep it clean.
Does anyone out there know what this flashing icon indicates, and if there is anything I can try on my own to fix it?

Seems a uninstall and reinstall of CS is in order.

May or may not be a contributing factor, may have kicked in at a wrong time or running root code.

Search the forums here for "MacKeeper" they will tell the whole story, crapware.
Disconnect all drives, follow the "Grey Screen" instructions and hold Shift key down while booting, if you get into OS X , immediatly backup your files to another drive and disconnect.
In my opinion you should first check to make sure you have a backup of your data, then just erase the entire internal drive (hold c boot off the 10.6 disk, use Disk Utility), reinstall OS X, same user name, update to 10.6.8, c boot off the 10.6 and Repair Disk (to fix a update error) install your programs and finally return files from backup into the same main user folders like before (Music, Docs, Pictures etc.)
A pain it is, but you've hosed your system and in the process you might as well rebuild everything and have a fast machine again. So happens to clear MacKrapper, uninstall CS5 and any other junk in your system at the same time. Fresh, clean, lean and mean.
Learn to Carbon Copy Cloner to a external drive that new pristine boot drive, you can hold the option key and boot from it (even update it), which is a real bacon saver when something like this happens. Also it's free to use, donations accepted.

Javascript - added images display as grey boxes

I am attempting to add an Image to an InDesign document via a javascript that I am executing via the RunScript() soap method of InDesign Cs4 server. The script I am using to add an image is something similar to this:

The script adds the image correctly, but when I pull up the document with InDesign, the Images are displayed as grey boxes. I am able to fix this within InDesign designer by manually setting the "Display Performance" to "High Quality" through the menus, but I need to handle this via the script run on the server. I attempted to update the script to the following:

Does anyone have any advice on how I should proceed? My main goal is to have the image display correctly without the grey box.

hello, I'm running into the same issue with image showing up as grey boxes. I'm updating documents via (JS) scripts by placing new images into rectangles. When I open up that document after the script saves it, all I see is a grey box until I change the Display Performance to Typical (or higher). In my scripts, I can change the localDisplaySettings to DisplaySettings.TYPICAL, but it only works locally, when I run this on the server it fails because it says DisplaySettings is undefined. I'm wondering if this is a server setting, and if so, how I might be able to change it?

Powerbook display went out, Help!

I was just using Safari, and seemingly out of nowhere, I heard a loud whirring (I think from the optical drive) and then the display went black--mostly, I can still sort of make out the menu bar and dock. I've had this happen once before, but that time it was because the power cord came unplugged. That is not the case this time--the power cord is plugged in and the indicator is lit green, meaning it is fully powered. Hitting the power button brought the display back to life for fifteen or twenty seconds, but then it went out again. I tried restarting, no help. My external monitor is working fine however.
Powerbook G4, 1.5 ghz, 12". Any ideas? Thanks.

I don't know exactly what you've done so far, but I'll start from scratch.
1. First (and I suspect you've already done this), go to System Preferences/Displays, and choose 1920 x 1200 resolution. You can pick another resolution later, but let's start at the max and move down later, if you choose.
2. If you cannot change your screen resoution, please enclose some more detailed info, i.e., what happened when you tried to go to different resolutions. Did it stay the same size? Get any error messages?
Oh, and leave your responses here, so others can give their input!

NVRAM reset is command, option, P and R.
Restart the computer and immediately hold the four keys down. Keep holding the keys down, and let the Mac chime three times, then release the keys. Be patient it could take some time.
That being said what you describe may be a hardware issue, so the NVRAM reset probably won't work.

The router might be bad or incompatible, but let's be optimistic.
On System Preferences, go to Network/Advanced/PPP. Only two items should be checked: Connect Automatically When Needed and Disconnect when switching user accounts. Uncheck everything else. Now, click Okay on the end of the page. The next time you're online, you shouldn't be disconnected.
If you still get disconnected like before, we might be dealing with a router issue - which can get rather complicated.

Have you worked through the Troubleshooting iOS and WiFi knowledge base article? If not, see if there is info in there that might help.
Is the WiFi greyed out on all WiFi networks or just the one? If it does this on all then there may be a hardwaer problem that needs attention from the techs at an Apple store genius bar.
Before that, however, try a reboot by holding both the power and home buttons until the apple logo appears and it restarts, ignoring the red slider if it appears. That clears a lot of iOS hang ups that occur.

I chose a picture to print, but instead of a print dialogue box, the screen went grey and iPhoto will not respond. I have even shut down my iMac completely, but when I relaunch iPhoto, I get the same screen (grey with the spinning "thinking" icon). I am running the latest version of Yosemite on the iMac. Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - from the resulting first aid window repair the database and if necessary rebuild your database

OK my mp3 player is just a little over 3 months old and the display went out. It started getting lighter and lighter and now you can not see it at all. I tried resetting it to no avail so after reading the forum I thought I should try to reload the firmware. How? i dont know if the screen of your zen v+ still work.but sometimes it doesn't display anything when the unit crash.just reset it and it can work again.so u can try it like that if the screen can work.hold the play botton and boot?the unit at the same time.if the screen can work,it will display the interface ofrecovery model .if not,although your unit can work,you cant operate the unit without viewing interface.
