Displaying a generated pdf in jsp

I've generated a pdf using jasper report, which is present in the dir(d:/reports), i need to display this file in the jsp(reports.jsp),i cannot create the report in the jsp.....

You can write a Servlet which would read the file contents using the standard input/output stream of java and render the response...
For reference find the code snippet:
String fileName=file.getName();
response.setHeader("Content-Disposition","attachment; filename=\""+fileName+"\"");
response.setContentLength((int)file.length());
response.setContentType("application/zip");
java.io.InputStream in = null;
java.io.OutputStream out = null;
try {
in = new java.io.BufferedInputStream(new FileInputStream(file) );
out = new java.io.BufferedOutputStream(response.getOutputStream() );
pipe(in,out,2048);
} finally {
if( in != null ) try {
in.close();
} catch( IOException ioException ) { ioException.printStackTrace(); }
in.close();
out.flush();
out.close();
public  long pipe(java.io.InputStream in, java.io.OutputStream out,
               int chunkSize) throws IOException {
          if( chunkSize < 1 ) {
               throw new IOException("Invalid chunk size.");
          byte[] buf = new byte[chunkSize];
          long tot = 0;
          int n;
          while( (n=in.read(buf)) != -1 ) {
               out.write(buf,0,n);
               tot += n;
          return tot;
     }

  • WEB.SHOW_DOCUMENT sometimes doesn't display the generated PDF file

    Hi all,
    I'm using the following code to generated my report from Forms:<br><br>
    V_REPORT_ID := FIND_REPORT_OBJECT(V_REPORT_NAME);
    V_REPORT_SERVER_JOB:= RUN_REPORT_OBJECT(V_REPORT_ID,P_LIST);
        V_JOB_ID := substr(V_REPORT_SERVER_JOB,length(:GLOBAL.REPORTS_SERVER)+2,length(V_REPORT_SERVER_JOB));
        V_REPORT_STATUS := REPORT_OBJECT_STATUS(V_REPORT_SERVER_JOB);
    LOOP
       IF V_REPORT_STATUS = 'FINISHED' THEN
          V_TMP_PDF := :GLOBAL.APACHE_HTML_FOLDER ||'rpt'|| V_JOB_ID  ||'.pdf' ;
         COPY_REPORT_OBJECT_OUTPUT(V_REPORT_SERVER_JOB, V_TMP_PDF );
        WEB.SHOW_DOCUMENT(:GLOBAL.AS_HOME_URL ||  'rpt'|| V_JOB_ID  ||'.pdf' ,'_BLANK');
        END IF;
    END LOOP; <br><br>
    Everything works fine except the WEB.SHOW_DOCUMENT part. In some clients, this command does what it required from it and opens a new browser window with the PDF report displayed on it. In some other clients, this command does nothing: now window dispalyed. When I refer to the Application Server, I see the PDF report successfully generated there. When I put the URL of the generated report manually in the browser address, I can see the report.
    <br><br>
    <b>Why the WEB.SHOW_DOCUMENT doesn't display the generated PDF report in some clients?</b>

    I agree with the previous 2 posters.
    Also firefox and ie handle it differently. Make sure you test on what your clients use.
    Sometimes acrotray.exe is completely retarded and doesn't work.

  • Generating PDF from Flex BarChart

    Hello,
    I am new to Flex. Have been playing with creating Advanced
    Data Grid and Bar Charts for our application prototype and would
    like to explore how to create a PDF file of the BarChart or other
    charting components.
    The requirement is simple. We show the BarChart and a button
    to view it as a PDF. When the user presses the button, the PDF
    viewing dialog should come up and the user can opt to save the PDF
    or view it (the standard way a browser deals with the PDF).
    Have read blogs, this forum and LiveCycle docs but don't
    understand clearly how Flex communicates with
    LiveCycle ES (or PDF Generator) to display the PDF. Any ideas
    or tutorials that does this would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Kannan

    In order to generate a PDF document, you have to call a
    method on a Java remote object that uses the XFAHelper and pass it
    some arguments.
    I modified the PDFService example in the documentation so I
    can:
    1- specify any document as opposed to hardcoding the PDF
    template name
    2- write the PDF to a file as opposed to writing it in the
    user's session
    Here is the source:
    package com.mycompany.flex.remoteObjects;
    import java.io.File;
    import java.io.IOException;
    import org.w3c.dom.Document;
    import flex.acrobat.pdf.XFAHelper;
    import flex.messaging.FlexContext;
    import flex.messaging.util.UUIDUtils;
    public class PDFService
    public PDFService()
    public Object generatePDF(Document dataset, String
    PDFdocument) throws IOException
    // Open shell PDF
    String source =
    FlexContext.getServletContext().getRealPath("/pdfgen/" +
    PDFdocument);
    int index = source.indexOf("./");
    if(index != -1 )
    // Remove the ./ added by UNIX
    source = source.substring(0, index) + source.substring(index
    + 2, source.length());
    XFAHelper helper = new XFAHelper();
    helper.open(source);
    // Import XFA dataset
    helper.importDataset(dataset);
    // Create a unique ID
    String uuid = UUIDUtils.createUUID(false);
    source =
    FlexContext.getServletContext().getRealPath("/dynamic-pdf/" + uuid
    + "_" + PDFdocument);
    index = source.indexOf("./");
    if(index != -1 )
    // Remove the ./ added by UNIX
    source = source.substring(0, index) + source.substring(index
    + 2, source.length());
    // Create the file object
    File file = new File(source);
    // Save the file
    helper.save(file);
    // Close any resources
    helper.close();
    return (uuid + "_" + PDFdocument);
    pdfgen is the folder where my PDF template resides.
    dynamic-pdf is the folder where the generated PDF are saved.
    These two folders are located under flex.war at the first
    level.
    In Flex, I wrote a Cairngorm command that calls this remote
    object and displays the generated PDF:
    package com.mycompany.core.commands
    import com.adobe.cairngorm.commands.ICommand;
    import com.adobe.cairngorm.control.CairngormEvent;
    import com.adobe.cairngorm.business.Responder;
    import
    com.mycompany.core.business.GenerateAndOpenPDFDelegate;
    import
    com.mycompany.core.control.event.GenerateAndOpenPDFEvent;
    import com.mycompany.core.model.ModelLocator;
    import flash.net.navigateToURL;
    import flash.net.URLRequest;
    import mx.rpc.events.ResultEvent;
    import mx.rpc.events.FaultEvent;
    import mx.collections.*;
    import mx.core.Application;
    import mx.controls.Alert;
    public class GenerateAndOpenPDFCommand implements ICommand,
    Responder
    [Bindable]
    private var model:ModelLocator = ModelLocator.getInstance();
    public function GenerateAndOpenPDFCommand():void
    public function execute(event:CairngormEvent):void
    trace("Executing GenerateAndOpenPDFCommand...");
    var delegate : GenerateAndOpenPDFDelegate = new
    GenerateAndOpenPDFDelegate( this );
    var generateAndOpenPDFEvent : GenerateAndOpenPDFEvent =
    event as GenerateAndOpenPDFEvent;
    delegate.generateAndOpenPDF( generateAndOpenPDFEvent.pdfVO
    public function onResult( event : * = null ) : void
    var item:Object;
    var result:String = (event as ResultEvent).result as String;
    trace("GenerateAndOpenPDFCommand::onResult\n\n" + result);
    if (result)
    // Open the generated PDF in a new window
    navigateToURL(new URLRequest(ModelLocator.FLEX_URL +
    "dynamic-pdf/" + result), "_blank");
    // Hide the progress bar overlay
    Application.application.requestProgressBar.visible = false;
    Application.application.requestProgressBar.progressBar.source =
    null;
    Application.application.requestProgressBar.progressBar.label
    = this.model.languageDictionary["000012"];
    public function onFault( event : * = null ) : void
    // Hide the progress bar overlay
    Application.application.requestProgressBar.visible = false;
    Application.application.requestProgressBar.progressBar.source =
    null;
    // Debug
    Alert.show("GenerateAndOpenPDFCommand:\n\n" + (event as
    FaultEvent).message);
    FLEX_URL is created in this way some place else in the
    application:
    // Get the server URL from the Application's
    var server:String = Application.application.url;
    var index:uint = server.indexOf("Shell"); // Shell is the
    name of my app folder
    server = server.substring(0, index);
    // This is the flex.war/ URL
    ModelLocator.FLEX_URL = server;
    Of course, it would be better to save the PDF in the user's
    session as Adobe suggests, but I couldn't figure out how they use
    the PDFResourceServlet. First of all, I had to get its code.
    I had to decompile the java class files in the samples to get
    the source of the PDFResourceServlet as it is not in the
    documentation. Here it is:
    package com.mycompany.flex.remoteObjects;
    import java.io.IOException;
    import javax.servlet.ServletException;
    import javax.servlet.http.HttpServlet;
    import javax.servlet.http.HttpServletRequest;
    import javax.servlet.http.HttpServletResponse;
    import javax.servlet.http.HttpSession;
    public class PDFResourceServlet extends HttpServlet
    public PDFResourceServlet()
    protected void doGet(HttpServletRequest req,
    HttpServletResponse res)
    throws ServletException, IOException
    doPost(req, res);
    protected void doPost(HttpServletRequest req,
    HttpServletResponse res)
    throws ServletException, IOException
    String id = req.getParameter("id");
    if(id != null)
    HttpSession session = req.getSession(true);
    try
    byte bytes[] = (byte[])(byte[])session.getAttribute(id);
    if(bytes != null)
    res.setContentType("application/pdf");
    res.setContentLength(bytes.length);
    res.getOutputStream().write(bytes);
    } else

  • How to display PDF in JSP using Iframe

    Hi All,
    I am using Struts 2. I am building my file in ActionClass with seperate Method like getGeneratedPDF() in which, I am setting header of response and writing into PDF.
    This method will be called from JSP by this way
    s:property value="getGeneratedPDF()" />
    But It displayed Junk Characters , and this PDF is not static (already Generated). It is generated and build on Fly.
    I have 2 questions 1 -- How to display PDF in JSP in proper way without Junk Character in it?
    questions 2 -- How to display it in Iframe?
    Please help me , If you know the solution.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Jimmy

It is generated and build on Fly.A PDF file is a binary file, not a text file, and you're trying to display it as String. Of course you would get "junk characters". Have you ever tried opening a binary file (pdf, doc, jpg, xls, etc) using a text editor like Notepad?
    I have 2 questions 1 -- How to display PDF in JSP in proper way without Junk Character in it?Display it as binary stream, not as text stream. You can display it standalone, just let the link/form/addressbar URL point to some Servlet which writes the InputStream of the PDF file to the OutputStream of the response, along with a correct set of response headers (at least content-type, content-disposition and content-length), so that the browser can open it in the correct application (which is usually Acrobat Reader). If you want to embed the PDF file in a JSP, then one of the ways is indeed using the HTML <iframe> tag.
    questions 2 -- How to display it in Iframe? Just let the iframe URL point to the aforementioned Servlet.
    You can find here an example of a generic file servlet, you may find it useful to get the idea how to do it: [http://balusc.blogspot.com/2007/07/fileservlet.html].

    How to display or generate PDF417 barcode dynamically in PDF form? I am using Acrobat XI Professional and there is a Bar Code Field in the same through which I generated the same. But I want to generate the same dynamically.

    What do you mean by dynamically? When yo set up a 2D bar code field you specify which field name/value pairs you want to include, along with other parameters. But be aware that they won't work with Reader unless you Reader-enable the document with LiveCycle Reader Extensions and include the bar code usage right. It will work with Acrobat Standard/Pro.

  • Display PDF in JSP using a content selector

    Hello,
    We are running on WLP 8.1 sp4. We have documents (Word and PDF) stored in the Weblogic Portal content management system. We have made several tries, but are unsuccessful in rendering a PDF inside a JSP using Content Selector tags. We can get a link to display and other properties of the content type, but we have not been able to show the actual binary property of the PDF. Has anyone climbed this mountain before, any help will be greatly appreciated!
    Rob
    The following displays links to the documents, but not the actual document.
    <pz:contentSelector rule="novel_flu_db_archived_reports"
    id="fluArchiveQuery" />
    <utility:notNull item="<%=fluArchiveQuery%>">
    <utility:forEachInArray array="<%=fluArchiveQuery%>" id="docA" >
    <cm:getProperty id="docA" name="file" conversionType="html" />
    <ad:render id="docA" />
    </utility:forEachInArray>
    </utility:notNull>

    Thank you for the response.
    Option 1 - would be great, but I am having problems getting this to work (see thread "Problem accessing a file stored in the CMS from link on JSP")
    Option 2 - I need to look into, as we need to be compliant with Accessibility standards and I can't remember if IFrames pose any problems for screen readers.
    Option 3 - introduces an additional step to the work flow, we would like to avoid extra work (if possible)
    In looking through the archives, there was mention of a "stand alone" JSP which was not under a Portlet or the Portal. The PDF was displayed in the stand alone JSP where the mime type was altered to PDF. Would this be an option?

  • JSP to Generate PDF Document

    Hi,
    I am developing a jsp system that needs to generate a pdf document for every page before proceding to the next on the click of a button.
    What i have now is itext but itext is a time taker! i have to literally code every page and extract values from my classes.
    What i would like is if there was such an api that could auto generate the jsp page into pdf since all the values will be there when the user clicks to procede to the next page.
    Would really appreciate help!!
    Thanks,
    Dev

    Try to find out more about Filters usage.
    It's a kind of wrapper that get executed when a user request a resources(page for instance) before the file(specified in form action) takes control, this is used to carry out common process to a group of pages without coding each piece of code in each page,
    AND when a response is send back, this same Filter get control to include or modified current response to client.
    I think that in order to parse the response and generate .pdf files(if the pdf for current page does not exist) you should write the html response in xml format. or at least you should use a component like JTidy that builds an XHTML-compliant page from a non-xhtml compliant page.
    In Filter implementation you should parse the response and transform it using Formatting Object Processor such as FOP or XING, or anyother
    Hope this help as starting point

  • JSP/Java to Generate PDFs

    I am looking into what is involved in dynamically generating PDFs in Java. The project that I am looking into involves taking data submitted via a form and generating a PDF from it. Can anyone direct me to a good site, tutorial, or give some advice on this matter?

    BTW,
    What is the major benefit in using Jasper report?
    If we design our report template (layout) in simple HTML with some embedded custom tag to retrieve dynamic content from a database and other static data such as picture, words, etc, the result will be a html page containing both static and dynamic information.
    I am just wondering how can I save time using Jasper report

  • Pdf in jsp page

    Hi ,
    I need to create a pdf file using jsp in which i need to print values from database. and i need to print one by one. plz its very urgent.
    Thanks in advance..

    Hi,
    First of all i need to let you know that you will need to do a bit of research inorder to understand what i am saying if you are not familiar with XML/XSLT.
    You can use XML,XSLT inorder to do the transformation of your data fetched from database to a PDF file.
    Basically you will need to fetch data from the DB and create a xml file dynamically.Then you need to create a XSL-FO file for the formatting and display for your PDF which you can add as a file in any of the package.

  • Why would hyperlinks fail to work half-way through generated PDF?

    I'm trying to create a PDF of a MS Word file using the Adobe PDF > Convert to Adobe PDF function. In the generated PDF, half-way through the file the hyperlinks stop working although they display correctly. In the source Word file, the links work fine. The Word file is heavily cross referenced and is about 14 MB. It was originally a 26MB file, but I reduced the filesize by converting the embedded graphics from embedded Visio objects to .wmf images.
    My question - what would make the hyperlinks fail? Is it a system processing issue? The rest of the PDF seems fine. Note that the final PDF also contains bookmarks. All other PDFs I generate work correctly.

    Word 2003
    Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional
    Windows XP, Version 2002, SP2
    789 MHz, 3GB RAM
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Just in case, I would suggest updating your Acrobat. You have to install the updates in order, but AA7 is currently at 7.1.2. The updates are available at http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=1&platform=Windows. Version 7.0.1 is a very early version. The latter versions (7.1.x) were primarily security updates. The 7.0.x updates were fixing a lot of the bugs.

    Thanks in advance for every support,
    Jan

    Hi Jan,
    Most possible causes for encountering this issue are:
    Possible cause:
    - The ADS is installed on a plattform, that is currently not supported by SAP for ADS. Please check the avaliablity at: Product Availability Matrix
    - Mixing of different Netweaver releases (NW04 and NW04s) -> This is unfortunatelly not possibble the J2EE engine release has to match with the ABAP stack release in order connect them properly.
    - The ADS SP level does not match the J2EE engine SP level. -> Please update the software components to have the same support package level.
    Hope this helps!!
    Regards,
    Arafat

    Finally i compare the environments (Production, Dev and QAS) and in DEV and QAS this report works perfectly (generate PDF file correctly). I compare configurations of them and they have the same parameters and values.
    The Support Desktop tools set on green all (DEV and QAS)
    I found an article about the ADS rfc that use the adobe document service, so i check in the environment production and this doesn't exists (using SM59).  I check in the environments DEV and QAS and this doesn't exists, but in both evironments appears just "ADS is enabled" and works perfectly.
    I tried to execute the program test of PDF's (FP_TEST_IA_01 and FP_TEST_00) on the three environments and not working on all.
    Please help me with this, i am crazy with this!!!
    Thanks and greetings.

  • Cannot generate PDF with RH10

    I have searched the forum and Peter Grainge's site and not found a solution to this problem that worked.
    I have a new installation of RH10 on Windows 7 sp1. It was installed as a trial and then licensed. I do not have the complete Adobe Acrobat -- only the add-on that was installed with RH.
    I used RoboHelp HTML to create a simple webhelp project and attempted to generate a PDF from it with the single source layout for Printed Documentation. The following error occurred:

    Internal error encountered,  Failed to generate Printed Documentation.
    RoboHelp can successfully create a PDF of a single topic. It can create a PDF with Review > Create PDF for Review.  It can successfully create a doc from this project, and Word is able to save that doc as a pdf.
    RH can open the projects that it created but cannot open the sample projects. The sample directories are read-only and I cannot reset them. I do not know why.
    I uninstalled RH and reinstalled it. The problem is still occurring.
    I am baffled. I am an inexperienced RH user so the problem might be a simple one. I would be grateful for any advice.
    Best wishes,
    Juliette Curtis

    I was also facing this issue and got the same error.  After much trial and error I found the following solution. So sharing that here. ( I am not sure whether this works for all the use cases. But in my case it worked. I am using Windows 7, RH11, and MS Office 2010.)
    Open any Office application. (I opened Word)
    Open File > Options > Add-Ins. (You will be able to manage your add-ins from this tab. When I browsed through the list I found the "Acrobat PDFMaker Office COM" Addin was with the list of  "Disabled Application Add-Ins")
    Select "Disabled items" from the Manage list. (This list is available at the bottom of the Add-Ins tab)
    Click Go. The Disable Items window is displayed.
    Select "Acrobat PDFMaker Office COM Addin" from the list.
    Click Enable.
    Click Close. The  "Acrobat PDFMaker Office COM Addin" is moved to the list of "Active Application Addins".
    Close MS word.
    Now when you generate the Printed Documentation output from RH11, the error mentioned in the query is not appearing and a PDF output is generated.
    Hope this solution will help.
