Dmake is very very slow in our builds (HELP please!!!)

We use dmake (with makedepend) in our builds and our build time for the entire system is extremely slow (it takes 17+ hours to do a clean build).
Could anybody suggest a solution or remedy to help us reduce the long build times.
We use solaris 2.6 with Forte 6.0 C++. Our sources are mounted on a shared filesystem/disk and they are not local to where the build happens.
Any help in this regard is highly appreciated.
Thanks.

Your build server has 2 CPUs, so it makes sense to use
dmake in parallel mode instead of make. I'm responsible
enginerr for both, make and dmake, and I can say that
they are compatible. People, who don't care about the
build time, can use any of them. People, who cares about
build time, should use 'dmake -m parallel -j 8' if they have
only 2 CPUs.
Of course each build can have some specific, but in
general it makes sense to allow 4xN parallel jobs (where
N is the number of CPUs). Also there is an ability to run
this build on several build servers (see 'man dmake' for
details about the build in distributed mode), or to run this
build in "grid" mode, but first of all you have to make sure
it works in parallel mode.
So I suggest you to try the following experiment:
1. Replace "make" with "$(MAKE)" in makefiles
2. Run build with "time dmake -m parallel -j 8 ..."
If you see that "user"+"sys" time is twice bigger than the
"real" on a 2 CPU system, this is the best result this
build can show. If "user"+"sys" is less than the "real"
time, there is a room for imrovement.
Please, let me know the results.
Thanks,
Nik

Hi internet on my Mac(OS10.9.1) suddenly became very slow.  Could somebody help me?  Thanks.

    Try resetting everything:
power down everything: modem, router, and computer
power up each item in turn in the same order: modem, router, and computer. Let each power up completely before moving on to the next.

I am using iPhone 4S. Recently I updated my software to iOS 6.1 since then my Iphone become very slow. Can anyone help me to resolve it?

    Standard troubleshooting...
Try a reset by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.
Remove all apps from Recently Used list...
    - From any Home Screen, double tap the home button to bring up the Recents List
    - Tap and hold any icon in this list until they wiggle
    - Press the red  to delete apps from this list.
    - Press the home button twice when done.
If still a problem restore with your backup.
If still a problem restore as new, i.e. without your backup. See how it runs with nothing synced to it.
If still a problem, it's likely a hardware issue.

Thats a start. Why are you using Chrome? Of the three main browsers Chrome is probably the worst. Try Safari or Firefox. I'm not familiar with GlimmerBlocker or BackBlaze, you might try disabling them to see if things improve. I don't see any other software related issues.
Edit: FlashPlayer is out of date. Update that by entering www.adobe.com into your browsers address bar and follow the links ro FP. Never click on a link to update software.....too many redirects to tainted installers.

  • Just updated PS CS 5 and it is very very slow... HELP!

One week ago, I have updated from PS CS3 to CS5. I am liking CS5, but is very very slow at everything. I am running Bridge and PS and that is it. Can anyone help me?
    Thanks.

My CS 5 is slow, also. I've upgraded from CS3 on my iMac G5; running 10.5.8. (2GB RAM). I use Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign and all three are slow and sluggish. Very slow to open and kinda slow to perform tasks. In PS, my files range from smaller images to quite large images. I did install the 12.0.1 update and it doesn't seem to have changed this much. I don't use Font Agent or Third Party Plugins. Any additional suggestions? Thanks.

  • Ethernet connection very slow.FIOS.. Help

All of a sudden, when I turned my mac on today and booted up Firefox, my connection was incredibly slow(almost taking 1-2 minutes to load a normal page). Some pages aren't even loading. It seems very out of the ordinary
-I figured maybe it was just Firefox, so I turned on Safari...nothing
-I figured it was disk space, so I freed up 18 gigs of 80...nothing
-I figured it was the ethernet cable, so i ran a network diagnostic check...it said My internet connection was fine
-I figured maybe I had a bad wire or something, so I plugged in in another room where another Computer regularly plugs in...still slow.
-The other computer currently plugged into the router is still going strong.
-I tried resetting it, by turning the router off and letting it set....nothing
-I'm not sure if it matters but the cable I use, is used for both my xbox360 and my mac...and it works fine with xbox live. So Im assuming the connection is good.
-I ran Clam, and I can't find any trojans(or any files to my knowledge of being corrupt)
    Can anyone help me out?

I took mine in yesterday and payed $80 for them to look at it because I don't have warranty anymore, they told me that it may be a router issue. I took the computer to my girlfriends house where she has a Time Capsule and it worked amazing. So be careful taking your computer to the shop. They may not be able to help you that much.

  • [AMD] MSI K8N very slow, maybe overclockers can help?

    I set-up a MSI K8N diamond board with Athlon 64 3200+, Gainward 6600GT GS PCi-E card, 2x512 DDR400 Corsair memory and SATA HD.
The CPU score in 3DMark2005 is 1200 slower than my friend's Asus board with the same specifications and no BIOS tweaking!
    Here's my friend's futuremark scores
        http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm05=769846
And here's mine, as you see it's quite depressing...
        http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm05=769976
I tried a few things to make board faster but to no avail:
    - Upgraded to latest mobo BIOS (1.2)
    - Set settings to Load Optimized Profile
    Same horrible score...
    Then I tried
    - Overclocked to Sergeant
    - Aggresive Timing
    - Disabled Spread Spectrum
    Same crappy scores!
It seems something is wrong with my setup or my board, do you have any suggestions to fix that? Any recommended BIOS settings?
    MSI K8N Diamond
    Athlon 64 3200+
    Gainward 6600GT PCi-E Golden Sample 128Mb
    Corsair (CMX512-3200C2PT) 512MB, DDR400 (x2)
    Maxtor Sata 120G 7200 RPM

I originally had my memory timings set to Auto and then I realised the mobo was running my RAM at 166Hz instead of 200! So I set it to manual at 200, my timings are 2.5,3,3,8. I did get a better performance (CPU score moved from 3400 to 3800 in 3dmark05, but that's still short of 1000 from friend having Asus Mobo with worse RAM than me).
I notice when running Sisoft that it complains about Vcore being set lower than its minimum, it's set at 1.5V in the BIOS btu when I look at Corecenter it's running at just under1.5v. I have a very good PSU (NeoPower 480W) so I don't suspect it is the cause of the problem.
I've tried overclocking and can get slightly better results (3840 in 3dMark05) but nothing like fixing the CPU score inconsistency with ASUS mobo.
I'll try to write down all the settings from the BIOS, in the mean time can you suggest anything to fix the problem? Is anyonelse having such bad scores with Diamond mobo?

  • MBP takes several minutes to start...  then very slow... HELP!

This is a duplicate of a post I have in the MBP forums, but was suggested to me that I may want to post it here as well.....
My MBP is coming up on 3 years old this December... Since upgrading to Leopard in early summer this year the system seems rather slow... especially starting up. It takes 3+ minutes usually. I didn't do a "clean", reformatted install with the OS install (which I may do once I back up my entire drive). I'm using approx. 70 gigs on my internal HD and the system states nearly 35 gigs availible... I have run Tech Tools Deluxe and Maintenance and they verify all is fine. I ran "sudo dmesg" in Terminal, and this is the report:

I'd like to clean up my MBP and get rid of anything that is not needed or that may be slowing the machine down.... trying to get it to run faster, like when it was new.....
...what am I missing? What else should I do? Should I just do the reformat install of the OS once I back up to Time Machine?
I should add that although I usually have a few devices connected to my USB/ Firewire ports, for the above test, I made sure nothing was attached to my MBP.
    Thanx,
    Tony

I'll try. Have you tried basic maintenance? How much ram is installed?
Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751
Check your login items. Check to see which items you can eliminate or disable.
If you have Diskwarrior, Techtool Pro or Drive Genius run them directly from the disc.

  • After Effects very slow - would love some help

    Ok,
    Here is my system :
    Vista 64 Ult.
    Q6600
    P5Q-E
    8 gig of RAM
    Geforce GSO 9600
I am working with a project that is 1500 X 1050 (approx) - it contains some camera moves and some page peel effects on pictures - and it is running unbearably slow...
I have enabled Disk caching to a separate SATA drive - also I notice that when I am running CS3 - is saying it only recognizes 4 gigs of RAM.
I have also enable Multiprocess for frames.  Now, I am not even close to a regular user of After Effects, so this might come as obvious, but what can I do here?  Is there a set of steps to help me speed this up?  I did take a look at
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/AfterEffects/9.0/WSF13D6BED-C53B-408a-B2D6-C8B4205D4FB7a.html
for improving performance and I did try to touch on most of the points I could understand like making my virtual drive space to 2X the amount of RAM.
Now, I am trying to precompose most of my elements, but I don't know if that is overkill.  Really, I just want to ensure that with my new system, it was worth the money and upgrade.

Thanks for all the effort and time.  I think I might be getting somewhere with your help.
"You are right. Plus if your render crashes you won't have to re-render the already rendered frames. PNG is lossless quality where JPEG is lossy quality. Depending on the compression setting, the computation from the calculated jpg frame can be lower than the computation time for PNG. You can try on a 30 sec portion to see what is faster."
I haven't tried JPG yet but I will.  I want to have something that I can output to DVD with decent quality. Right now .mov looks good, but will try the JPGS.
Another thing to take into account is the writing speed of the file on your HDD. If you are rendering on the same disk where the sources are, or on  a USB external drive, it will take more time than rendering on an internal sata/e-stata drive or a raid array. In image sequence, this is more important as AE have to write/close a file for each frame, and depending on your configuration (windows, mac, antivirus, timemachine...) it can make a huge difference.
I have a separate SATA drive for disk caching.  I did that right away.  I was wondering about the memory caching though in the preferences panel - I am not sure if I should just leave the defaults for that :
    MAX MEMORY USAGE
    MAX DISK CACHE SIZE
"If on PC try to disconnect it from the web and turn of your antivirus."
My rendering computer is not connected to the internet, so I don't have an anti-virus running on it.  It only get programs from my internet computer that have been thoroughly checked first.
You will save time. Turn off disk indexing too.
How do I do this on a PC?
Could you please explain what you mean by "negate its impact fully by using the corresponding layer style instead of the effect. They it's slightly faster"?
Instead of using the drop shadow effect, right clic on your layer in the time line menu and select "Layer style > Drop shadow". It will have the same behavior/options than the Photoshop counterpart. It's better and faster than the drop shadow effect.
    I will try this.  Thanks
A good way to know what step takes more time than the other (and a good way to figure out what part of the process you have to optimise) is twirling down, in the render queue the "current render" line. It will tell you for every frame, what the rendering is actually doing. The longer the step, the longer it's name will stay on screen.
    That is a great tip.
Can you tell me if the comp size makes a difference when I am rendering out 720X540?  The main challenge for me is that I have about another 10 minutes to add to the project.  I don't want this to take me 2 hours to render out 15 minutes!
Well it probably will. 2 hours of rendering for 15minutes is not that bad. You're doing motion graphics, not editing. Also, if your pictures are jpeg, it add computational time, because the render have to decompress it in memory in order to work with it. If you have disk space, you'd rather like to convert all your jpeg to uncompressed tiff files, so the render engine will just have to load it in memory in order to press it.
That is another great idea.  I didn't know that TIFF were better.
I am going to OC my Q6600 slight, to see if there is any effect.  Another issue I am running into is that AE says my Graphics card is not an OPENGL card.  But the package says it is!
Have you downloaded the latest drivers for your card yet ? If not try to do so, restart your PC and check again into AE."
Yes, I have the newest drivers (it is a new card and I had to go to the NVIDIA site just to get them.  The problem is that I have posted on the NVIDIA board days ago about this issue and no one has given me an answer yet concerning this.  I just checked again with AE - it says. "NO COMPATIBLE OPENGL CARD FOUND"
It is an Nvidia 9600 GSO 768Mg video card.
