Do I Need to Save Files when upgrading?

Hi everyone,
I'm upgrading from Premiere Elements 2 to 9 and would like to know if I have to save my other files, videos & projects to another drive or will the upgrade keep them where they are at, on my E drive?
Thanks
Jeff

Thanks, Steve.
I finally finished old projects, installed Premiere 9 and started on new ones. A question that  I can't seem to get an answer for so far:  I've added multiple tracks to make a music video.  Any suggestions on how to work with visualizing multiple tracks.  To view each individual track in the monitor panel or switch between tracks, I use the enable feature.  I know there has to be an easier way.  Will adjusting the transparency or opacity help?
Thanks again!

  • Do i lose files when upgrading to Lion?

I am preparing to upgrade to Lion fromsnowleapard, i don't have a back up, but my question is:
Do I lose files when upgrading to Lion? I have microsoft office for MAC 2011 installed and files for garageband which I realy don't want to loose!

If you have files you don't want to lose, you should back up your system regardless of upgrading or not.  Buy an external drive and clone your system or use Time Machine to back it up.
The normal Lion upgrade won't delete your data if things go correctly, any hiccups and you'll need that backup.

  • Do I need to backup my files when upgrading from tiger to leopard?

Not sure if I need to backup all my files before upgrading from Tiger to Leopard (to use a Mac Box Set), have bought a Seagate 1TB FreeAgent GoFlex Home hard drive to back up on. Was told I wouldn't need a WiFi router but have now discovered I would need a dual Ethernet port to be connected to the internet and the hard drive which my Mac mini only has access for one, either the internet or the hard drive. So I ask do I really need to back up before upgrading? or can you get dual Ethernet ports?

Only if your data has any value to you.
If everything works perfectly, you should lose nothing.
If anything goes wrong, it is possible to lose data.
Personally I don't want to trust my data to everything working perfectly so I back it up.
As to the question of dual ethernet ports, you don't need them actually. If you create a LAN with a router then the multiple ports on your router will allow you to connect to both the internet and disk at once.

  • Adobe Acrobat Standard XI: Why prompted to save file when nothing changed?

I have Adobe Acrobat Standard as the default PDF reader. I PDF printed a page from a website. Then I clicked to open the PDF. After I finished viewing the file, I closed the window. Adobe Acrobat prompts me to save: Yes, No, Cancel. Since I changed absolutly nothing, I am puzzled why Adobe Acrobat's save dialog thinks there are changes and askes me whether I want to save the changes.
I have repeated opening and closing the PDFseveral times.
Then, I tried opening and closing another PDF, and it just closes without prompting to save.
Why do I get different behaviors on different PDFs? And can I control the behavior to get or not get the save prompt when there are no changes?

I like that Adobe Acrobat will correct problems, then ask you whether to save.
In the case of this file, I click Yes to save. Then the next time I open and close the file, it asks again, and I click Yes to save. Adobe Acrobat always does it with this file.
With another file, Adobe Acrobat (AA) does not prompt, unless I change the file.
I don't know which difference matters. AA created both PDFs. The problem file was a print from a webpage. The good file (that closes without prompting) was created from a scanner.
I tried PDF printing this page (i.e. the page on which I am composing my response to your message). Then, I opened and closed the PDF, and was prompted to save.
Seems like if AA corrected the problem, and I saved, AA should not have to correct the problem again (if that is what's happening). Also, if AA made the PDF in the first place, there should be no problems with the PDFto correct.
You know what? I just tried printing another website and same prompting everytime I close.
I've been using Chrome. I tried printing with Internet Explorer, and no problem of prompting when closing.
Hmm. I just tried PDF printing from FireFox. No problem here either.
Well, Now I suppose I just leave it for Google and Adobe to work out, if they care to.
I just tried opening the problem file in AA and PDF printing from it. This seems to have cleaned the file. The second PDF file has no problem opening and closing.
I've got an idea. I just went to the address bar in Chrome and typed "Chrome://plugins". That's the only way I know to get to the Chrome plugins. I saw that I have BOTH the Chrome built-in PDF Reader  AND the Adobe Create plugins enabled. I disabled the Chrome PDF Reader so ONLY the Adobe Create plugin is enabled.
I printed this webpage again (the webpage you are reading). This time, there was no problem opening and closing the PDF, no prompts to save.
However, now online PDFs will not display in Chrome. Instead, Chrome offers to download the PDF.
I went back to the plugins and found Adobe Reader disabled. I enabled Adobe Reader so now I have both Adobe Reader and Adobe Create plugins enabled.
    The problem came back.
I don't know who would fix this, Adobe or Chrome, but would be nice to "have my cake and eat it, too" meaning, not have to muck with the plugins to AA-print clean PDFs from Chrome, and then muck again with the plugins to display PDFs in Chrome.
I tried FireFox. Displays PDFs, and AA-prints PDFs that are clean (i.e. no prompt on closing from AA).
Well, that is enough (maybe more than enough) from me on this. I'll monitor this discussion in case anyone comments.

  • How do I save itunes when upgrading from osx4 to osx5 ?

how do I save itunes. bookmark, when upgrading from osx4 to osx5?

When you upgrade attached to iTunes a backup copy is made...then after the upgrade the backup is used to restore all the content to your iDevice, assuming you are actually talking about upgrading from iOS 4 to iOS 5.

  • What do I need to save files as to transfer from AppleWorks 5 to iWork '06?

I have plenty of AppleWorks word processor documents and spreadsheets that I'm trying to transfer over to my new computer (I've been using Mac OS 9 all this time) and iWork doesn't seem to be able to read any of the documents. What do I need to save them as? And what does Mac OS X use for spreadsheets? It seems like iWork is just for Power Point and Word type documents, then again I have very little experience with all this new stuff so far. Thanks for the help.

Pages, part of iWork, is only able to open AppleWorks 6 word processing documents. It is not able to open any other AppleWorks 6 file types or any type of AppleWorks 5 or ClarisWorks documents. Keynote (the other application in iWork) is able to open AppleWorks 6 presentation documents. I don't know for sure, but, since presentation is a type of AppleWorks document new to AppleWorks 6, it would seem logical that it can't open AppleWorks 5 slide shows. None of this has anything to do with using AppleWorks 6 in OS 9 or OS X. If you don't have AppleWorks 6, you will have to buy it to use to "up convert" your AppleWorks 5 documents. For inexpensive options to buy AppleWorks 6, try eBay and do a search for "AppleWorks" or "Apple Works" (some people put a "space" in the name). Or you may purchase it from almost any retailer that sells Apple software, including the online Apple Store.

  • What directory/area is needed to delete files when your startup disk is warning it's getting full?

Have the message that the startup disk is near full and I need to delete files.  What area or directory will directly clear this issue.  I have cleared out trash and deleted files....is there a specific directory that causes this issue.  thanks much

Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

  • Keep getting corrupted temp save file when I save and close.

When I save and close a numbers spreadsheet, about 20% of the time I will be left with the normal file and a weird temporary file with a "~" on the end of the file name.  I can't delete the file or do anything with it.  It will let me open it, but even when I save it still says I cant delete because the file is in use.
    Example-
Work on spreadsheet1.  Hit save and then close.
In finder I am left with-
    spreadsheet1
    spreadsheet1~
"spreadsheet1" is the correct file and it works and functions normally, but "spreadsheet1~" is corrupt and I cant seem to delete it.  I always get "The operation can’t be completed because the item “spreadsheet1~” is in use.
What is causing this and how can I get rid of those files?

I think I would ignore the files and not worry about them.  Are you experiencing any undesirable effects of these files-- aside from seeing them there?

  • Is there a way of deleting old files when upgrading to Lion

So I'm finally thinking about switching over from 10.6.8 to 10.7.5.  Normally, when I upgrade to a newer OS, it's usually when a newer OS than that comes out.  ie. Mountain Lion is out, so Lion would have seen it's issues and has been updated as much as it can.  Basically, 10.7.5 is the best Lion will ever get.  Hence why I'm willing to upgrade.  I'll admit, I'm lazy when it comes to having to reinstall everything, but because old OS extensions and kernels don't get deleted when you upgrade to newer OS, I usually install a clean OS, which means I have to reinstall all my apps.  I'm wondering if there's a way for all older OS system files that are not necessary anymore, to be deleted upon upgrading.  Or will Apple ever design an upgrade that will do so.

Buy Lion, erase your disk and install.

  • I had to trash pref files when upgrading to Logic 9

Started with Logic 7 three years ago...
So yesterday I upgraded to Logic 9 from 8, and I had two unusual problems.
First, when I would record a track, the waveform overview wouldn't draw. It would make the blue box, with a line down the middle, and I had audio, but no visible waveform. If I manually prompted Logic to redraw it, it would...
But then on subsequent tracks they wouldn't have a waveform either. Now it's pretty common for Logic to ignore rendering these while you're actually recording something. It's focused on getting your audio on the drive... but as soon as you stop, it will immediately display your waveform and that wasn't happening.
I also was getting a "disk too slow message". I was recording to an internal drive and I have recorded multiple tracks simultaneously with Logic 8, so a single voice track shouldn't have made a difference.
Repairing permissions seems to have stopped the "disk too slow message", and as far as the waveform overview, I trashed the pref files. (Logic will make new ones when you relaunch it) That seems to have fixed the issue.
I went through something similar when they came out with 8. I actually had to delete the old program and do a complete re-install.
Having gone through that, which isn't much... Logic 9 looks really good. Some great new features...
Here's a question: How can we get Apple to give us a .pdf manual? Is there someplace we can put in the request?
Based on what I've seen, that's the biggest disappointment everyone has!

  • Aperture cannot locate master files when upgrading to new OS X Leopard

I have recently upgraded to Leopard from Tiger. The problem I have encountered is that when trying to locate the master files of my pictures, Aperture cannot because it thinks my files are in my hard drive located in my previous OS X and that the volume is not mounted. I cannot 'Relocate Masters for Projects' or bring my masters back online since it is the hard drive I am currently running Leopard. Does anyone else have this problem and possibly a resolution? Thank you very much.

I had a similar problem, and this how I fixed this.
Select all the files, and either select "Manage Referenced Files" from the File menu or from the contextual menu when you right click the selected files. Use the dialogue that appears to navigate to your master files [make sure that "Show only Files Not Found" is NOT selected] and reconnect your files. If you have files in a number of albums/projects/folders this may take some time.
Quit Aperture, and if a dialogue shows up saying that it is updating previews DON'T SELECT CANCEL. When you re-launch Aperture everything should be fine.

  • Asks to save file when no changes made

Hello, my Photoshop CS3 has developed an annoying behavior. If I open a file --even just to LOOK at it-- when I close the file, the Save Changes dialog box appears. This dialog used to only appear when I had actually made changes.
I have checked all the Preferences, saw no place where this could be changed. I have thrown away the plist file. In Color Settings, I have all 3 Color Management Policies set to "Off." All to no avail.
How can I return this to its original behavior of only asking to save when I've actually made changes?
    Thank you for your help.
    --Gale

Chris, your answers helped me A LOT.
I copied the plugins folder from my properly-performing MacBook Pro and compared it to the plugins on misbehaving desktop Mac. There was one difference. The culprit was ProfileSetterCS3.plugin. (Which I do think came in when I calibrated with ColorMunki.)
Now that ProfileSetterCS3.plugin is in the trash, my CS3 Photoshop is PERFECT.
    Thank you so much!

  • CCX Script - Need to Be updated when Upgrading from 7X to 8X w/ SQL Integration

Got a customer we're planning on upgrading from UCCX 7X to 8X. They are currently integrated with an external SQL DB. I understand I need to download the appropriate driver for 8X for SQL. The question I have though is whether the UCCX scripts themselves need to be updated as well or will the 7X scripts that have the typical DB read/get/write/release work when I do the migration?

They should work as-is but your only way to be sure is to test them. I would only anticipate an issue if you were doing complicated logic that CCX didn't support in the first place. Simple SELECT queries should continue to be fine.
PS- Don't use the Microsoft driver, use this: http://jtds.sourceforge.net/
