"Do Not Constrain" crop setting won't stick

I never crop using a set ratio. The crop is always determined by the content of the image and I always want to be able to move one side independently of another, as with any other program, so this is making me crazy. It was a drag that Ap2 defaulted to a constrained ratio and made you toggle the menu at every boot, but I can't even get it to stay on the "Do Not Constrain" setting in between tweaks of the same image. Maddening.
It's a dealbreaker for me, no matter how great the rest is. Is this the way it is or have I got a quirk in my rig?
Thanks,
J

As far as exposure goes, the extra parts (surrounding film, either negs or transparencies; the slide mount) scan black, and with a decently exposed image, they shouldn't be much different than the black in the image. Note that this is completely unlike reflective scans of opaque materials, where you need to crop down while scanning, to keep the auto exposure from reading the surrounding border (which might be yellowed, say) or the scanner cover background (which might be much whiter than what you're scanning.) There have been a few times where I'm trying to rescue a blown out image and I'll crop in more on the subject of interest to get a better scan exposure.
As for cutting mats, etc. it's kind of ironic, but while I shoot almost nothing but film, I "display" the vast majority of it online! In which case, who cares what the proportions are in relation to standards, as long as they make sense for the image for whatever reason.
I thought of two more situations where I always crop randomly. First is the whole reason I bought Aperture: a life-long project (it will probably fall to a few generations of heirs at the current rate!) to get high quality pictures of every pinball backglass ever made. By the time I got to a couple of thousand slides, I desperately needed something like Aperture to help me organize and process the images. But there have been any number of backglass sizes over the years, plus I want to nudge the crops a bit even on ones that are the same proportions, to make up for an edge shadow or paint defect or whatever. And they all get cropped because I shoot them with decent "margins" to begin with, to allow room for deskewing, errors in the viewfinder vs the slide mount, etc.
The other one is sporting shots of my sons. I grab what I am capable of under the conditions (field position, lens length, my ability to track the action, etc.) and then reframe once scanned to make the best picture I can from what's there. Which leaves them all over the map in terms of aspect ratio, but then they're mostly viewed online by he and his friends, copied to Facebook, whatever, where standard ratios are completely unimportant.

  • Possible bug: Clicking on Constrain Crop does not constrain crop

Anybody else experiencing this bug? I saw it a few times, rarely, in LR 4.1 and earlier. I am seeing it more often in LR 4.2 (but nowhere near 100% of the time, this is an intermittent bug)
In the Lens Corrections panel, I make a set of corrections, check on Constrain Crop, and it does nothing. If I then uncheck Constrain Crop, the crop is constrained. This is backwards from the way it should work.
Also, if I have a photo where it appears that the crop is properly applied, sometimes if I move on to edit the next photo, and then move back to the original photo, the crop is not shown visually anymore (Even though it was shown visually a few seconds ago), and the check mark is gone in the Lens Correction panel, even though the History panel says that the most recent entry is: Crop Constrain To Warp says "yes".
    Does anyone know a solution?

Wow... I'm using Photoshop CS5 for Windows and have just encountered this very same problem. The print preview shows the corner crop marks in the correct location as designated by the Bleed... setting (.1"); but when I print, the bleed setting gets ignored and the corner crop marks revert to the outer edges of the image.
This happens when I print to my Epson color laser or to my Brother b/w laser. It occurred to me to try one other test - and interestingly enough, when I printed to a PDF, the corner marks appeared correctly in the output!
So far, I haven't found any other information on this apparent bug besides this ancient thread.
Anyone willing to test this out and give their results? Thanks!

  • "Show Script menu in menu bar" setting won't stick

    Hi all,
I'm starting some Applescript development, and I'd like to make some scripts available in the Scripts menu. I checked the box to "Show Script menu in menu bar" from within the prefs for AppleScript Editor, but it doesn't work. When I close AppleScript Editor, relaunch it, and look at the prefs again, the box is unchecked. I deleted the relevant preference files from my Library and recreated them by launching AppleScript Editor, but the setting just won't stick.
    Any ideas?
    -Tim

    Taylor,
The preference that I'm looking at is within AppleScript Editor, the program I use to write new AppleScripts. Script Editor was the previous name of the same application. When I check the "Show Script menu in menu bar" in the AppleScript Editor prefs and close with window. The box is unchecked the next time I open the AppleScript Editor application, and the Script menu never appears in my menu bar. Everything works fine on my iMac at home. The problem seems to be isolated to my MBP. Weird.

  • Quicktime 7.13 Flash Setting won't stick

OK,I got no answers posting in the OS X Server page,
so I'd thought I'd post this here in QT to see if
    anyone has dealt with this?
    so here is the scenario:
Quicktime 7.13's "enable flash" checkbox bug
caused all of our elem grade Flash based software
    to stop working properly.
I went into the Admin account on one of 80 macs
managed by OD. I set the QT prefs to have the
checkbox enabled, and then closed out of the
Quicktime Prefs pane. I then went and made a copy of
that QT Prefs file, and copied down into
    System/Library/User Template/English.local/Library/Prefs/
making sure to change back from admin to system before closing out
the Info panel, and then rebooted the machine.
Logged in as a newly created user, and the pref does stick.
But log in as a legacy OD user, and the pref does not stick,
    it shows to be disabled.
What should I try next to get this pref to stick for all OD users
    when they log in?
All Macs run 10.4.8, QT 7.13.
    Server is OSX Tiger Server.

Had this happen on a colleague's iMac at work. Clicked Enable Flash checkbox - quit Quicktime - preference doesn't save.
This is on a normal one user account Mac on a network - is it the same bug and will your solution fix it?
    Thanks
    Greg
    Answered my own question.
Here are the steps to fix this issue:
#1. Go log into the SERVER as admin.
#2. Set the "Enable Flash" setting in QT PREF Pane,
close out of the pref pane.
#3 Log out a admin, log back in as admin.
#4 Make a copy of the admin's QT prefs, place on
    desktop.
    #5 Go into System/Library/Usr
    Templates/English.lproj/Library/Prefernces/
ON THE SERVER, and copy into the Preferences folder
    that copy of
the admin's QT Prefs you placed on the desktop
    earlier.
#6 Close out all windows, making sure to reset all
    prefs on files
    and folders to system ownership.
Go to a client and test. If the setting doesn't stick
    on the managed
    user account, then:
#1 Login to the machine as admin.
#2 Search for Managed Accounts folder, trash all
    contents of this folder.
#3 empty trash, then logout as admin
#4 log in as managed user account. Should apply now.

  • Cannot set IP address for "enable default host", setting won't stick

    Hi,
My office is using a 3rd party application called Rumpus to give clients FTP access to files that we post on our Mac Mini. I installed Rumpus a few months ago, and it's been working well, until last week when suddenly there's no external web access at all.
FYI we have a static IP from TWC.
In my Airport Utility config, I'm using the Network Option "Enable Default Host" and I'm setting this to the IP address that I've assigned to our Mac Mini which is 10.0.1.110. This way all incoming traffic is automatically getting to the Mac Mini. But since this problem started happening, this setting is now set to an IP address of 10.0.1.253. I don't know how this setting changed. And no matter what I do I cannot get it to save to 10.0.1.110. When I attempt to change it, it looks like it's saving but the setting doesn't change. Additionally, I've discovered I CAN set this to any IP address of 10.0.1.200, or higher, but not below 200. (The Utility's default IP range is from .2 to .200 so I guess this must be preventing the setting from sticking but I don't see why.)
Can anyone help me with this??
    Regards,
    Bob

How do you assign the address to the mini? In the mini itself or via dhcp reservations?
What model airport are you using? What firmware?
Can you remember some firmware update or something that altered the settings??
Reset to factory and try again.. but on 7.6.4 and 7.7.x there are definitely FTP issues.
See posts here. I have been tracking FTP problems for a while.
There are severe FTP issues with the AE.. the last couple of versions of the Gen1-5 firmware as well as the Gen 6.. See this thread.

  • Default email program setting won't stick

    Hi,
I use Outlook 2011 on my MacBook Pro, with OS 10.7.5. Often when I click a mailto link (or choose "send as email attachment" in Word), Mail launches instead of Outlook.
I know how to change the setting for default email program in both Outlook and Mail. The problem is that the settings I choose do not stick. Somehow, Mail turns itself back into the default email program.
I could uninstall Mail although some people suggest this is a bad idea, and in any event it seems a bit of a cop out. I guess my preferences are corrupted? Will Preferential Treatment help?
    Thanks for any suggestions,
    LDS

I have the same problem.  Changing the default option in Mail doesn't fix it (nor does selecting the option in Outlook to make it the default).

  • Setting default Office apps won't stick

I'm trying to make MS Office X the default for my appilcations, but it keeps reverting to MS Office 2004. (I'm running 10.8.6 on a Mac Pro.)
I've had "2004" on my drive for many years and "X" for 2-3 years. I've pretty much continued to use 2004 because it's working okay and I haven't had time for something to go wrong. Now I'm trying to make X the default for Word and Excel (I never use Power Point, and I don't want to mess with Entourage right now), but I can't get it to "stick."
I tried all the usual things, and then started digging around. I realized that my System Preferences showed a plugin called "RCDefaultAPP" that I must have installed at some point. I did a search ofmy drive but couldn't find anything by that name. At this site: http://www.rubicode.com/Software/RCDefaultApp/ I found this about removing the plugin: "Drag RCDefaultApp.prefPane to the trash. Any changed LaunchServices settings remain changed, though "disabled" settings will no longer be disabled." I understand the first sentence, but I have no idea what the second sentence means. So I trashed the icon from my Preferencs Pane, ran "Repair Disk Permissions" just to play it safe, and rebooted. I'm still not getting any further.
I begin by quitting any version of Word that's open. When I open the "Get Info" windwo from a Word document (or right click on a document and choose "Open With"), it shows the icon for 2004 and says "Microsoft Word (default) (090513)." Under that, as always, it says "Use this application to open all documents like this one." From there I choose "Microsoft Word (10.0.0)" and it shows the new icon. If I close the window and launch the document, it launches "X" as expected. However, if I open another document--whether or not "X" is already open--it launches "2004." I can do this manually with any document and that document will launch "X."
So, I go back into the "Get info" window and choose "Microsoft Word (10.0.0)" again. This time, however, I click the "Change All" button. As soon as I do this, the icon reverts from "X" to "2004." It just won't stick. The same is true of Excel.
I haven't messed with any other documents or apps because I'm afraid I'll just mess something up. I've looked up "discussions" in both the Apple community and MS community....I've Googled. I don't see any other discussions about this other than the steps I've just described. I don't know what else to try.
    Thoughts? Help?

Launch Services can get "temperamental" at times.  For a case like you describe, if it insists of defaulting to app A when you want app B, compress app A (say as a zip file).  This basically tells Launch Services "screw you - now try to find A".
So compress your Word 2004 app.  The tell LS to use the newer Word.  Even if it doesn't stick I think LS wil find the newer Word since none other can be found for word documents.
To compress a file, right (control) click on the file in the finder to being up its contextual menu and select Compress.  A .zip file will be created.  You can then trash the uncompressed original.  But before you empty the trash double click the zip to recreate the expanded file and run it just to make sure the zip file was valid (this is a paranoid step).  If it launches ok trash the expanded file and now you can empty the trash.

  • Text Tool Fails After Constrained Crop

I'm making some large buttons for a project and used the constrained crop to standardize the buttons to 200x158. While PS lets me select the text tool, making a new layer, and locate it on the image, the text does not appear in the layer when typed. When I clicked the move tool the layer name changed to the text I had typed but it still did not show in the layer. This behavior does not occur with an unconstrained crop. Is this a bug or am I missing something?

You have probably acquired a strange setting in the Character panel.
Try resetting it from the drop-down menu top-right of the panel.

  • Color profile won't stick.

Since I installed a Matrox M9125 graphics card, colour profiles set in "Color Management" won't stick. The default "Device" for "Common Management" is "Display: Generic Non--PnP Monitor - Matrox M9125PCIe x16". When I select my actual monitor (NEC 2690) from the Device drop down list profiles appear - including one I have made using an Eye-One Display 2 - and I can set it as the default one. However, when I re-open "Color Management" the profile I just set is gone, the profile list is empty and the Device is back to the Generic PnP ...display etc.
The profiles worked fine in my previous vga card (Nvidia) and stayed selected.
    I have Vista Ultimate 32Bit and CS3.
Grateful for any help on this.

    Hi,
I just want to sympathise with the China/Printer issue.
Most of my artwork goes over there and I want to rip my hair out with every new job. Steve is right that we as artists really should go by the printer's specs, but when dealing with a language barrier, not to mention a 12 hour time difference it's so far been imposssible for me to do. I keep a Pantone color picker at my desk and manually enter in the CMYK values. It doesn't always work though.
About your problem, the only thing I can think of is that you have images in your file that were RBG when placed in your file. It might not be what's going on, but something to check anyway.
    Good luck,
    Cherie

  • Deafult Printer won't "stick" XEROX Phaser 7760GX

When I set the XEROX Phaser 7760GX IP networked printer as default in system settings, it has reverted to "last used" next time I i look. I have downloaded and installed new printdriver since upgrading to Leopard and it prints fine but won't stick.
It might be the same problem but in the Adobe CS3 InDesign Print Presets [Deafult] I'm unable to select the Default Printer (Greyed out)

I have another idea on how to use the old driver. NO guarantees.
For all who may be reading this -- this is for Yosemite -- it reduces security by relaxing sandboxing. It is a workaround, not a permanent fix.
Use the Terminal utility to run the two commands below -
sudo sh -c 'echo "Sandboxing Relaxed" >> /etc/cups/cups-files.conf'
    sudo launchctl stop org.cups.cupsd
(sudo means superuser do - this is your admin user on OS X. It asks for your password - but it hides it from you when you type - for security)

My Settings won't stick; I don't know how to create a signature
How can I correct these two difficulties please?

Sorry, not clear. I meant "My Settings" (top right hand corner of FCE Discussions window), not in FCE itself. The time zone setting is accepted but the next time I look it has reverted to USA GMT-8 hours, and some other settings are similarly affected
and by "signature" I meant some text that always appears at the bottom of Discussions messages, saying somethink like "Mac Pro 2.0 GHz, FCE 3.5" etc. I can't see a place to specify that.
(But now I see something has appeared!)
    Thanks.

How can I copy my music files to my iPAD. The CDs are currently stored in folders on my PC. Note: Synching via iCLOUD won't work because I have VISTA OS and I need at least Windows 7 or 8.

    Hi ladextr,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  To sync your music to your iPad, first put your music in iTunes as described here:
Adding music and other content to iTunes
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1473
Adding content on your computer to iTunes
iTunes helps you add digital audio and video files on your computer directly to your iTunes library. You can add audio files that are in AAC, MP3, WAV, AIFF, Apple Lossless, or Audible.com (.aa) format. If you have unprotected WMA content, iTunes for Windows can convert these files to one of these formats. You can also add video content in QuickTime or MPEG-4 format to iTunes. To learn how to add these files to iTunes follow the steps below.
    Open iTunes
From the File menu, choose one of the following choices:
    MacAdd to Library
    Windows
    Add File to Library
    Add Folder to Library
Navigate to and select the file or folder that you want to add
If iTunes is set to "Copy files to the iTunes Music folder when adding to library," iTunes will copy all content that is added to the iTunes library to the iTunes Music folder. To adjust this setting or change the location of this folder, go to the Advanced tab in iTunes Preferences.
Once that's done, you can sync the music to your iPad by following this article:
iTunes 11 for Windows: Set up syncing for iPod, iPhone, or iPad

  • Crop marks won't print

I’ve only run into this with one client. He sends me individual epses, each one a business card to print. When I open them in Illustrator it looks like there are crop marks and bleed, when I place in InDesign, as I always do, to set 8 up on a page the bleed won’t print and the crop marks won’t print.  I can enlarge the object box and see the bleed and crop marks but they still wont print. If I print directly from Illustrator just to test it, it will print the bleed but still no crop marks. This is all in CS3 but was the same when I had CS2.

I always prefer to use trim marks (crop marks as opposed to crop area) and fit the artboard to them.
I'm with you, Steve. I did it that way for years mainly because it left no room for ambiguity (and because that's what made sense to those of us who used to paste layout elements down on artboards with rubber cement).
Unfortunately, over the last few versions, Adobe seems to have been changing the paradigm on us. I've seen an attempt to bring Illustrator in line with the DTP way of doing things -- Quark, Pagemaker, and InDesign have always equated artboard size with document trim size. The change in Illustrator terminology (no more reference to "trim marks"), I think, was the first clue that this was happening.
In th U.S., more and more magazines (even as their numbers dwindle) are now accepting print ad layouts done in Illustrator (whereas they used to insist they be done exclusively in QuarkXpress). Those that do, however, are insisting that the document (artboard) size correspond to their trim size.
OK, fine. But I don't have to like it.

  • Boldface won't "stick" in database document

I'm using a large database document in AppleWorks in which some text is boldfaced. Boldface won't "stick" in those fields now -- if I boldface some text, it returns to lightface as soon as I move out of the field. If I enter a field where the text is already boldfaced, it immediately returns to lightface. I've tried closing the document, restarting AppleWorks and restarting the computer, and the problem continues.
    I'm running a MacBook with OSX v. 10.4.11 and AppleWorks 6.2.9.
    Thanks for any help.

"Is there a way to export all of the data in the file to a new file without copying and pasting pieces of it or carrying over the corrupt data?"
Create a new DB document with the same fields in the same order as the old one.
Open the old one, show all records in "List" view.
Go file > Save as... ASCII Text (or Text, whichever is available in the list of Save as choices).
    Switch to the new DB
Click on the single (empty) record in the DB to select it, then go Edit > Clear to delete the record.
Go file >Insert... to open the Open dialogue.
Navigate to and select the Text file you saved above. Click Open.
Check to see that the imported data has gone into the correct fields. If it has, you're done. If it hasn't, then the Tab order of the fields in the two DBs does not match. Revise the tab order of one so that they are the same in both DBs, then repeat the process above.

  • Mail settings won't stick, how to fix?

The column settings in Mail suddenly won't stick. Probably a corrupt preference? What's the best way to deal with the problem?
    Thanks,
    iHope

Well, in theory, if we backup the whole shmeer, we can at least go back to where we are now...
Quit Mail. First I'd backup these two Mail folders, by right clicking on them in the Finder, then choose Archive/Compress.
    Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail
    Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail Downloads
Right click on that Mail folder, choose archive, you'll get everything in the folder, and the folder itself in a file called Mail.zip, move it to a safe place, same for the Mail Downloads folder... only the plist is separate.
Try dragging this file to the desktop in case we need to put it back later...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
(May or may not require you to setup your account(s) again.)
Then In your home folder, try moving this +folder & file+ to the Desktop then reboot...
First, Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these +folder & file+ to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    These too...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/<[email protected]>/.mboxCache.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/.mboxCache.plist
    Reboot.
