Do not use Tech Support via chat - 2 hours of down time resulted.

Verizon:
Today, I got on Chat with technical support since my internet connection was sluggish the last couple days.  In the beginning, Maria asked not only for one phone number, but another (in case we got disconnected?).After about 20 minutes of chatting with Maria, she said there didn't seem to be any issues, but she was going to run tests, or see what she could do on her side.  Shortly after, the chat window stopped responding, and the internet connection was lost.
I waited 15 minutes or so (no call from Maria), and the internet still had not came back up.
I reset the router by unplugging for 5 seconds and plugging back in.  Let it reboot for ten mintures...Nothing... Repeated this process again, nothing. 
I decided to call customer service, since I did not have an internet connection, waited on hold for 25 minutes just to be transferred to technical support another ten minutes.  Dean from tech support troubleshooted the issues, ran tests, and got the internet up and working again (it was something on Verizon end, since he never even had me reset the router...).
Moral of story, please teach the tech folks to call back if a connection is lost.  Almost 2 hours of time is lost just because I decided to use the chat service (which I will not use again).

Well I called the website tech support to fix an issue with the phone button on the website giving me a service unavailable error... They completely wiped out my account and now I can't re-register.... Granted I could NOT understand what the woman was saying... I am trying via chat again....

    On older versions of Firefox, Toolbar links ran across the top of my screen, with a drop-down to the far right which would show additional Toolbar items for which there was not room on the screen.
    With Firefox 4, if I'm not using icons (text only), the dedicated Toolbar drop-down is gone and I have to first click 'Bookmarks' to the right of the Toolbar ribbon, then 'Show All Bookmarks', then 'Toolbar' in order to access my additional Toolbar links. Could anyone have made it any harder?
    Why doesn't someone just restore the drop-down at the far right of the Toolbar so that all of my Toolbar items (which I prefer to keep separately from the regular Bookmark items, else I would have just plain bookmarked those items in the first place) are readily accessible?

A notice now appears every time I upload an image to class as an attachment that says, Not Using SoftArtisan File UP, and this appears to be slowing down my uploads tremendously. I want to get rid of this. I never used it before and don't need it and don't want it. I just want the uploads to work like they did before this idiotic notice started slowing things down.

  • During a demo today could not use Messages for video chat or screen share - what dumb thing was I doing wrong?

    I was giving a demo / class today for some people in a volunteer group I work for. They all got new MacBook Airs or MacBook Pros, and I got a MacBook Pro because I am going to be going into explain how to use them.
    Most everythng went well, but one really cool thing I do all the time from home on my iMac I couldn't get to work. That part of the lesson was a disaster, though fortunately everything else went well.
    I'd like to figure out what dumb thing I was doing wrong so I can show them next week.
    I know we have to sign in with AOL accounts for screen sharing to work in Messages. So first I had everybody sign up for a free AOL account. That went fine.
    Then we all logged in using our accounts. That went fine for everybody except one person. We could all see each other online, with little video cameras next to our names in the Buddy List. One person never showed up anywhere for some reason.
    But we could not do either video chats or successfully request to share other peoples' screens, which I do all the time at home to help other people with their Macs.
    One person could not even see any requests from me pop up. One person could see my requests come in and accepted them, but nothing happened after that.
    Ordinary message chats were working ok.
    Things I already thought of:
    1. Perhaps the wi-fi in the bulding was blocking some ports? Just in case, I turned on mobile hotspot (tethering) on my iPhone 5 and had everybody connect to my network. But the results were the same, so it wasn't that.
    2. I wasn't sure it mattered, but in Settings > Sharing I made sure that everbody had screen sharing turned on. And just in case, even though I don't have this set from home, I further made sure everybody had "anyone may request to control the screen" checked.
    While I could do local network sharing of screens (via the Devices list in the Finder side panel), I couldn't for the life of me get it to work with Messages. But I've been doing this for years from home to help my sister and other people across town with their Mac by doing screen sharing this way and taking over their screen.
    It must be something dumb I'm overlooking. Anybody know what it is?

    Problem solved, finally, by AppleCare support!
    I gave up trying to reach the "English support line" guy located in Manila and decided to insist on plain old Japanese support here in Tokyo and explained the problem from scratch.
    First we tried all the usual suspects, but nothing we did could get it to work. Then we did an ARA (Apple Remote Access) support session. This was the first time I ever did this. Quite cool, and very useful.
    At first we still could not figure out what was wrong, but finally isolated the problem to the way my AOL account name was entered.
    When I added the AOL account to my Messages app, all I did was enter my username part. I didn't add the @aol.com part, because I never did that on my iMac. However, Messages kept on automatically adding "@aol.com" to the end of the AIM account name.
    The Apple tech person got me to try once again to get rid of the @aol.com part of the account name. We:
    1. Disabled the account.
    2. Manually deleted the @aol.com, leaving just my AIM name.
    3. Restarted my MacBook Pro (very quick, by the way, and also immediately brought back his ARA session).
    This time the @aol.com part remained gone, and I was able to test connecting to my iMac, which has a different AIM account set. It worked!
    I was able to do screen sharing via Messages! And also do video chat via Messages. Yay!
    So much thanks to Watabe-san at Apple support. The people I am teaching will be happy to see this working on Sunday, because it really is a very useful tool for assisting people remotely.

  • Cartridges not detected, tech support a joke. Help!

    Long story as short as I can make it:
    I have a Photosmart C4280
    I recently went to change the print cartridges and when I put the new ones in I got an error message stating that the new print cartridges could not be detected. I tried putting the old ones back in, the printer acknowledged them as the old ones, and then defaulted to the same error message "cartridges not detected" or something like that. 
    I unplugged the printer, then I went through all of the steps to reset it and did the "semi-full reset" and the same message came up again. 
    I got on with tech support, two hours in a chat box, and nothing worked. Same error messages. 
    I got on the phone with a not-so-nice tech person who was zero help as well but did offer me the SAME printer, an "upgrade" for a lousy price. 
    Anyone have any advice/ideas on this one? I can't really afford a new printer, but can't really go without one either. Service will cost the same as a new printer anyway, and I'm super frustrated.

    OK, it seems like the black cartridge is defective and has failed. Also, the color cartridge is out of ink. So i suggest you call HP Tech Support and have them replace the black cartridge for you. And meanwhile, you can replace the empty color cartridge yourself. And before you call them, just make sure you clean the electrical contacts of the black cartridge, and the contacts inside the printer that come in contact with the printer, with a lint free cloth and then try reinserting it. You could also try installing a new black cartridge and see if it works. This is the best way to determine if the problem is with the black cartridge or the printer.

  • Internet light not lit, tech support not helping, PPP Down?

    Hey guys, I have a problem. I just ordered Verizon's HSI and yesterday was my service ready date. I receieved  a call saying that my service was ready, except it's not working at all. 
    I spent a majority of yesterday evening on the phone with tech support, which seemed like they were clueless and not helping. here's my problem.
    I have a Westell 7500 modem/router. The DSL light is a solid green, however the Internet light is out. It's not red or green, just unlit. I logged into the router settings and i see this big warning: Gateway is not ready for internet connection. Well, that's no good. It also says DSL Connected, but PPP down. 
    I went into the connections of the router settings and I changed the login information to my verizon account information, but that didn't seem to do anything. It still says the PPP status is down.
    No matter what I do, I am not connected to the internet it seems. I talked to a represenative on the phone and he said that the problem is on Verizon's end, but he seemed kind of confused so I don't know if he really knows what he was talking about.
    I'm not really a happy camper with the service so far, so I would really appreciate it if someone could help me out here. God forbid I switch to Comcast and their lousy bandwidth cap, but if this isn't resolved soon I may have to resort to that.
    Or if there is a tier 3 DSL support number with professionals, i would LOVE to have that.

    They're supposed to call me back "within 24-48 hours" with good news that my internet will suddenly be working. I'm not going to hold my breath. I'll update with any news as I'm sure i'm not the only one going through this. 

  • IE not using some CSS or JS files, some of the time..

    I'm working with a client trying to solve a problem that just started on a site I built for her.  The problem started about three weeks ago.
    It's a really simple ASP.NET site: http://nancyjoart.com/  One master page loads a common CSS bundle and JS bundle on all pages, however I used to have then unbundled and only bundled them to try to limit the
    problem.  It didn't work, but I left the bundles as they do speed the site up.
    One machine on her network constantly fails, a surface pro 2, Windows 8.1, IE11, all updates installed.  Short story:  On four pages, two public and two privately accessed, IE doesn't apply a CSS or run the javascript in the bundle.
    Here are the two public pages that fail:

    If the NAV bar at the top has blue links instead of grey/black, the CSS didn't load.  If the page has no art and shows the loading GIF, or no images, the JS didn't load.
    Now the fun and amazing part: the CSS that doesn't work on these four pages, is successfully used and works on every other page.
    The CSS and JS files do actually get requested and downloaded by IE, as evidenced by a Network Monitor trace session and the F12 tools, but don't get applied (CSS) or loaded(JS) on these pages.
    Now it gets weirder:  I can run the site fine on my Surface RT and my Pro2 from anywhere else without fail.  However, if I'm on her wifi - only half the time I can't get the scripts to run or that one CSS to apply.  I press CTRL+R and
    they work fine when the page reloads, but only half the time.  In fact, it took me about a half an hour to experience the failure.  Once it happened, my dev machine would exhibit the problem, then it would work, then it would fail.
    In terms of the JS - When it fails, the debugger indicates a class isn't found.  IE has parsed and downloaded that JS file, and shows the file in the debugger file list dropdown  - but doesn't seem to use it.
    Even more odd, the request and responses all appear to happen quickly, all have 200 OK/Success results and the request and response headers look completely normal.  I've even saved the JS file itself and binary compared it to what I have on the server,
    and it matches, so it isn't somehow getting mangled in-transit.  Even more odd than this little oddity is that once the files are requested and "fail", even if you switch to a cellular connection, the next page loads, and IE doesn't NOT load
    the files correctly either.  CTRL+R eventually will get it to work on this new connection type though.
    Other things I've tried:
    Works on her wifi on:  iPhone, Windows Phone 8.1, Windows Phone 8, Windows Phone 7, Blackberry (Bold and Playbook) and her Windows 7 desktop.  I've put Firefox on her machine, and it works fine every time.   Anything in this list never
    fails, ever except ie11 on the surfaces.
    Her surface is pretty much OOB in terms of apps.  Just Modern apps installed.
    My surface pro 2 dev machine is OOB too. used daily for development - Again, site works everywhere but her wifi.
    Minifying the CSS or JS doesn't seem to help,
    Chkdsk reports nothing,
    Windows Defender is the only AV installed,
    all Windows updates are installed,
    Bundling the css and JS with webgrease didn't help,
    I've reset the IE advanced settings, security settings, cleared the cache, tried inPrivate, tried making it trusted, nothing worked.
    even reset the wifi router
    She reports other websites all work fine. (** caveat: not sure how complicated these sites are, or how frequently she does this...)
    Does anyone have any suggestions that they'd try next if they were in my sad shoes?

  • Can not use the UStream.TV chat feature with Foxfire. Works with Explorer

    I can not run the chat feature that UStream.tv provides. One example is here: http://desertsunburn.no-ip.org/tucson.html but all the sites have tried do the same thing. It works fine with Explorer.
    Looking at the comments on the web, it is not a new problem and there is somehow something wrong in Foxfire not allowing this chat to work??? It sits at a revolving circle and then times out.

    Go to Safari / Preferences. Select the Security tab.
    Where you see: Fraudulent sites: Deslect Warn when visiting a fraudulent website.
    Restart your Mac.
    Now try that website.
    Try Safari maintenance also.
    From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
    from the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.

    And if so, can I avoid having to pre-qualify by entering my ipod's serial number? I've been through this with them, but the problem keeps resurfacing:

  • Not in Internet Explorer, but only in Firefox, I get redirected to sites that I have not selected. MS Tech Support just spent an hour running scans, concluding that the problem was not in IE. They said to contact Firefox.

    Before getting off, we ran identical searches, one in IE, one in Firefox. IE got me to Bank of America without redirecting, Firefox redirected me to a wrong site, (bank related, but wrong).

  • Re-using Segments Created via API or Re-creating Every Time?

    Wanted to get your thoughts on this...
    We have been able to create Segments via the API, however, which way to go:
    OPTION 1: Re-use Segment if there are no additions or deletions (changes) to the list? or
    OPTION 2: Re-create the Segment every time via API.
    In Option 1, we will still need to compare the existing list to the new list before deciding to re-use. However, the comparison will be done outside of Eloqua.
    In Option 2, we may create a new list even though there are no changes but we will have the historical data and it will be easier to identify lists.
    In both scenarios, data processing may affect performance.
    For those who have done this or are familiar, what would you recommend?

    In simpler terms of creating assets and storage, creating new segments each time should not be a problem. That said, the asset choosers might end up being slow if you're blowing past 100k which will ultimately result in a poor user experience for the marketers. Please see:
    Eloqua Product Thresholds
    Beyond that, you should also consider:
    - Developers creating a process where segments and campaigns are being created automatically, and the campaigns being left active for a long time with segments are set to run every hour. For static lists, it wouldn't really result in heavy calculating but you can run into delayed contact entry into campaigns if you have hundreds of segments feeding hundreds of campaigns - each with heavy filtering. At best it would be pointless to run segments (on the canvas) hourly if the lists are static, and at worst you're making everything slower. That doesn't sound like a major concern here but something to keep in mind.
    - API tools automatically updating segments which are currently referenced in live campaigns (again, running hourly segments). This means if you re-use assets for new campaigns there is a risk that they're being referenced by a currently live campaign and you end up adding the wrong contacts to the wrong flow. Since segments share a relationship to campaigns as their primary contact feeder, the API tools should only be updating the same segment asset with new contacts if the intent is to add those contacts to an existing campaign.
    - Although keeping shared lists or segments untouched gives you some historical tracking, do not assume the contacts in those assets are exactly the same ones which were used when the campaign was launched. For example, if you delete the bouncebacks and unsubscribes after the campaign has run and go back to your segment, even if it is a simple segment with a local list, it will not contain the deleted contacts. For any serious auditing task, let the API tool archive what contacts were added to what segment. Then you can use Bulk 2.0 activity exports to keep a list of what contacts received what emails from various campaigns.

  • Verizon is billing me for data I simply DID NOT USE - huge unexplainable usage every 6 hours - and no one can explain it

    My wife and I both had iphone 4S' on verizon for years with no issues.  My wife recently upgraded to an Iphone 5c and ever since her data usage has gone through the roof.  After talking wtih Apple and Verizon countless times and getting no answers, im reaching out to the community.
    The issue is very VERY obvious in that our detail usage breakdown shows my wife being charged for some data usage every 6 hours for stuff she never did.  And, to make matters worse, my wife is home most of the time connected to wifi!   I don't know what it is, but something, somewhere, which on one can explain, is generating huge amounts of data usage on my wife's iphone 5c ( my phone is fine ).  I will attach a sample picture below which shows just one or two days of this, but this happens every dingle day.
    I want to upgrade my phone and actually get a third line, but im scared to hit this issue on two more phones.  I dont know whats going on here and why no one can give me a straight answer.  As far as im concerned verizon is scamming us by injecting this usage and hitting people with overages.
    Some points:
         - random usage on a clear 6 hour cycle
         - some of the usage is clearly in the middle of the night when we're asleep
         - MOST of the usage is when the phone is home connected to wifi
         - we have turned off background refresh
         - we reset cell data usage in settings and viewed it the next day, it did NOT show the usage verizon is charging me for
    I've seen other posts here and on apple discussion forums with other people having the same exact issue! I want ANSWERS or im going to have to cancel my contract and move to AT&T, which I would really hate to do because other than this verizon has been great!  I've also seen some people mention that verizon polls for usage data every 6 hours, can there be some bug there that is making it use WAAAY more data than needed? ( perhaps an intentional revenue generating bug...??? )

I to have ridiculous charges...I went into verizon tonight and talked to a manager about my data usage which is **...I just got the iphone 5c on Saturday......I showed him how the phone says I used data while wifi and cellular data was TURNED OFF.....we reset  my data to 0 and he watched me turn on cellular data and I went into my APPADVISOR app ....it is a clean app which uses minimal data compared to the internet...I was in the app 10 seconds and I got out quick and made sure the app was no longer running in the background.....we watched me get charged for 6mb of data in 10 seconds which was not only in my settings , but reflected real time in my verizon app that checks my data usage which is what my billing is based on
    ...I have unlimited talk, text with my 4gig of data sharing I have with my wife that we pay 70 bucks per phone a month........he then watched me text my brother on iMessage and get charged 16kb....I message should be free of data....we then went to ESPN for another counted 10 seconds and I got charged 4.8 MB.....the manager was dumbfounded by me showing this to him in real time......he stated the following which I hope is not a lie:
    APPLE AND VERIZON ARE AWARE AND BEING FLOODED WITH DATA USAGE ISSUES WHICH SEEM TO BE REFLECTING SPIKED DATA CHARGES FOR THE IPHONE 5c and 5s ONLY.......APPLE IS COMING OUT WITH IOS 7.0.5 in the next week to fix these issues.....he gave me his card and he took my information and said if in this billing cycle I go over 4 gig of data, he will eat the overage fee.....we shall see what all transpires in the coming weeks but there is something jacked on apples or Verizon's end with the 5c and 5s phones...

  • Can you not use more than one instance of Safari at a time

    I can't use my IE browser because of problems in my other post.
    I also need to have multiple windows or browser sessions open at once and Safari will only seem to open one session at a time.
    Is this the case?
    How do I get around it?
    If I open Safari, and click the Safari icon again it just sits there and won't open another session.

    Between "New window" and "New Tab," the tab is the way to go for the needs I believe you are expressing. However, tabbed browsing may not be enabled by default.
    To make the tab bar always visible--and therefore easily make new tabs by control-clicking the tab bar--open Safari Preferences. Select "Tabs" and, in that pref pane, select "Enable Tabbed Browsing" and "Always show tab bar." There are also some keyboard shortcuts shown there.
