Dodgy screen?

My screen is playing up on my iphone5, blurred lines all over, multicolored lines also, iv contacted apple and they told me to back up and restore but still happening! I'm still in my warranty so I'll be sending it back but apple no longer sell iPhone5's so what will happen when I send mine back?

Apple keep many years of service stock as they do for all previous models
You will get exactly the same model , colour device you send in

  • Dodgy backlight

    Hey,
I've had my macbook since March last year, but bought the 3 year protection plan before then so I am covered for the next 3 years. My macbooks backlight has started to turn off at certain angles... at first it was just when it was about 45 degree's open, which I thought was a bit soon to turn off, but now its turns off at all angles.. its getting harder and harder to find the 'sweet point' to make it stay on.
I know I should send it in to get fixed as its probably a hardware problem but there is one more issue.
As some of you macbook owners should know the 'stopper' bump things on the top half of the screen that hold the screen away from the keyboard when shut, are plastic, not rubber. As they are plastic mine have warn in to the bottom half of my laptop from use.. its caused a dark line on one side, but the other side actually cracked.. now I'm missing a thin slither of plastic around the right bottom corner of my laptop, what I want to ask is, if I sent it in, would they refuse to fix my screen because of the broken plastic casing?
I don't think its fair for them to reject fixing my screen, as the plastic stoppers waring away my laptop is a fault in the design, I can't exactly close it lightly when the magnet slams it shut. But I've heard of apple refusing to fix problems with ipods if the screen has a slight crack.. even if thats not why the person sent it in.
Any help would be much appreciated! Sorry for writing so much..
    Dave.

    Hi David
Broken plastic trim and casings seems to be a recurrent problem with MacBooks and Apple Care are well aware of this. There are numerous reports of Apple fixing these items under warranty. Indeed, it's happened to me: I've had two new bottom cases, a top case, a new CD drive, and two inverter board replacements under warranty.
Take your MB in for repair, and ask them to fix the dodgy screen and the broken plastic at the same time.

  • Will gradient issue 24" iMacs end up as refurbs?!

I've just ordered a 24" 2.8ghz Extreme refurb here in the UK. Now having read various posts over the net regarding the gradient issues, I'm worried I'll be opening my new machine to find a dodgy screen.
What is the likelihood that all the returned iMacs with gradient problems are just being sent out again as Refurbs?! Has anyone had any experiences with this?
    Thanks in advance

I think it's inevitable that iMacs returned for screen problems such as gradients or other aberrations will end up recirculating as reburbs, and I would also think most people buying a refurb system will have some concerns about prior existing faults or reliability, just as you have. However, in general terms there's nothing to suggest refurbs are less reliable than new, and based on Apple's published refurbishment procedures, every reason to believe they may actually be less prone to flaws and failures. Of course, that's assuming Apple actually do follow the procedure they claim.
I must say though that from personal experience, I would have no hesitation in buying a refurb. Not only is it more likely to have undergone thorough testing than a unit shipped directly from China or that has been sitting in a warehouse after production, waiting to be bought, but it is covered by the same warranty as a brand new unit, so even if it escaped the stringent testing Apple claim it does on these systems, and ends up exhibiting faults, you get it repaired or replaced like any other system.
Although I'm typing this on brand new 24" iMac at work, when I go home I'll be working off a 24" refurb of my own. You can't tell the difference, except mine cost $300 less!

  • Hardware colour calibration tips...

    Hi there,
I've recently purchased one of the new glossy 15" MacBook Pros and a glossy 24" Led Cinema Display. I'm no expert in colour on Macs, so i want to be sure i have everything set up as well as possible. I design for web mostly (so print calibration is less important to me), and am used to working on PCs until recently, and i know there are gamma differences between the Macs/PCs.
I notice in the System Preferences, that the laptop screen is using using the "Color LED" display profile and the 24" is using the "LED Cinema Display" profile. Both screens are at full brightness, but they aren't quite matching - one has warmer colours than the other. As yet i haven't manually calibrated either screen.
    So my questions would be...
    - What brightness level should i be using each screen at?
    - What colour profiles should i be using, hardware specific, Adobe or custom?
    - What calibration hardware would people recommend to use with these LED displays?
Similarly, should i be doing anything specific in Photoshop / Fireworks etc. to ensure what i see on my screens is a close to ideal (i know that's a vague term, sorry!) across as many different machines / platforms as possible?
I know that everyday users mostly use dodgy screens, and they all tinker with them so there is no "right" setting, but i want to avoid things like what i think are black appearing as dark greys on PC screens etc, or noticeable different colour casts / tones across different systems.
    Any help absolutely appreciated!
    r.

I have the latest driver from toshiba site...not the nvidia site. This doesnt seem to happen all the time but once in 2-3 boots. I dont think it happened with the driver that came with the machine.
I resintalled and currently there is no antivirus software.
    Thank you.

  • Hinge Tightness  on 17" MBP

My MBP seems to be working quite well in comparison to old Titanium PB. One thing I notice though is that if I have it in my lap the screen will fall forward. It may be because it's just larger and heavier. The PB would stay in place and also open wider -- the hinge seemed tighter.
Anyone else have the same experience?

I also have a dodgy screen lid, that cannot stand up
firmly when picked up or placed on a jellyfish
    (laptop stand)
I just got it from London Regent Street on Tuesday,
as a replacement for my four duff MBP's and I think I
am going to call them this morning to replace the
unit, as this seems obviously a design fault within
the machine and not a normal machine working.
No Powerbooks or iBooks, I have used do this and its
frustrating when you pick it up and the screen just
flops down, like the hinges are broken.
I think if I dont do anything about it now, it may
become even more of a problem as time goes on and the
lid is opened and closed a fair few times making it
    even more loose.
Is anyone else experencing loose hinge problems as
well, I would be interested to see if its only a
batch affected or if this is a general production
    problem with the machines.
As well as that are there people out there who's
screen lids are tight and behaving well ?
    Thank
Mine is too loose as well! I called Apple and they said they would replace it. I askd if I could take to the Pasadena Store where I purchased it and perform the exchange there. They said that would be best, also had a scratch bewteen the bezel and the gray lip on the screen, very noticable. Will followup with my experience.
No whines minimal heat. This book is awesome!

  • Is my display OK?

    I'm from korea
That's why My English is too bad. Sorry for this.
I bought MBP last friday in Korea. I was so excited then. A hour later, my feeling was so bad though.
That was because my display was in trouble.
If you see my display, Please visit this cite ---> http://kmug.co.kr/board/zboard.php?id=hwurgentqa&page=1&sn1=&divpage=2&sn=off&ss =on&sc=on&select_arrange=headnum&desc=asc&no=9887
There are several pictures in that page.
I sent e-mail with these pictures to apple korea.
However, they said 'your display is OK! that's normal!'
    I was dipressed with that.
When I turn on my MBP, I see the rising sun in my display bottom.
    Is my display really OK?
    15-inch Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I don't know how it works in Korea, but in the UK if you buy something which doesn't meet your expectations, or was mis-sold to you you have the right ro return for either replacement, repair or refund.
If your Apple dealer says the screen is fine he should have no problem taking your one back and using it as a display unit for MBP's in his outlet, if he thinks it's so good. Then when people ask him about the dodgy screen he might get on to Apple and tell them they have dodgy screens on their 15" MacBook Pro's.
Take your unit back to your dealer. If you're within the 14 day remorse period, he should honour that. If he still refuses to replace the machine, threaten to take legal action against him and offer to get him as much bad publicity as possible. Always helpful for smaller businesses.
Point your dealer to these threads, print some posts out and take them in with you, to show him you are not making this up.
Your screen is bleeding light from the bottom edge. This is a fault. Apple will confirm this (Apple lottery allowing - it does depend on who you speak to).
Good luck and don't give up - Maybe Apple should start selling the 15" MBP's as Indiana Jones specials - owning one is just one big adventure

  • Dodgy touch screen in the sun

    Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone else has this problem or if it's just my particular phone?
If my phone is in my pocket and I get it out to answer a call, it takes 5-10 swipes of the answer button to actually get it across far enough to answer. Seems like the heat up the sun is affecting the touch response.
    Anyone?

No screen covering that I know of, You can make a box out of cardboard that will shield the screen from the sun so you can more easily see the screen in sunlight

  • Love my new ipad.  But after upgrading to ios7 Safari became dodgy.  Now it is frozen in a white screen and nothing will free it.  Everything else on the ipad works fine. I deleted data, history, cookies, etc.  Same problem.  No change after power down.

Everything worked fine on my new ipad.  After I upgraded to ios7 it still worked fine even if it looked very different.  But Safari started acting strangely (it is starting the same thing on my iPhone 4s, too).  Finally, it froze in state with no URL, no keyboard will come up, I can get Safari to close and start, but not actually function.  I went into settings and deleted all the cookies, data, history, and so forth.  Same state.  I powered down the iPad and restarted.  Same state.  I tried a trick were I held down the button to bring up the power down stripe and then holding down the home button.  Same state.
What can I do?  Can I delete Safari and re-install it somehow?  Should I take it to an Apple store?

If powering down with hard reset (press and hold two buttons Power and home) will not give positive results follow that article

  • 17 inch screen v 15 inch screen on a macbook pro

    Hi there,
I'm just about to buy a new macbook pro and planning to use it predominantly for editing on.
I heard recently that there were problems with the size of the 17 inch screen on some mac laptops and that they were fragile and prone to breaking.
I also heard that Apple had made moves to fix this problem. Has anyone bought a 17 inch macbook pro recently and have they had any problems?
Obviously from an editing perspective it would be nice to buy the biggest screen available but don't want to buy it if it's dodgy.
    Can anyone offer advice??
    Many thanks

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
LCD issues can typically be avoided as long as you follow the tips here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=944373&tstart=0
Don't let the preponderance of issues on this board make you think issues are widespread. This is a hospital ward. Very few people come here who have no problems.
It has been mentioned elsewhere the 17" screen may be too big to pass British customs. I've not had that problem with U.S. customs. The 15" screen also has LED based LCD, which supposedly is more environmentally friendly, but Apple has a good recycling program that should still keep it environmentally friendly on http://www.apple.com/environment/
The 17" machine is slightly more powerful than the 15" according to specs:
    http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/specs.html
So really the question becomes what are you going to be primarily editing? Text, the power of the machine matters little. RAW photos and video it matters more.

  • Headphone Jack sticking and screen turning on

I bought a sim free palm pre (non plus!) a month or so ago from handtec UK and now the sound intermittently doesnt work. its like the headphone jack is sticking which ive seen is common but when there is no sound the screen randomly turns on like i pressed the unlock button. So i think its a dodgy connection on the slider because when i blow in the slider/headphone jack it fixes it for a bit then it comes back, which is annoying because it drains my battery quicker.
    Any ideas?
P.S i spoke to someone on palm live chat and they said to run webos doctor, (i dont think its software tho) but i thought id try it anyway so when i entered the serial number it said its invalid!!!!! Then i discovered theres another sticker underneath the sticker with the imei and serial numbers on the box which says its a movistar phone. When i tried this serial number to download webos doctor it said for movistar and i dont want to use this incase it locks the phone to that network :/
So im stuck as to whether to try and get the phone fixed or see if theres an easy fix but i just dont know what to do

I think you are correct, I would think it is the headphone jack connector. You can try some compressed air in a can in the jack hole, or maybe a little contact cleaner that has some very light lubricant in it to try and free up the micro switch in the connector. The exercise the switch by quickly inserting and removing the headphone jacks plug. I you do not have any luck wit this process you would be forced to get a repair or replacement.

  • N8/C7 PURPLE SCREEN ISSUE AND HOW TO SPOT IF YOU H...

MODS THIS IS NOT A POLL OR IN ANYWAY SHAPE OR FORM A VOTING THREAD IT IS A THREAD TO WARN USERS ABOUT THE PURPLE SCREEN ISSUE AND HOW TO SPOT IT IN THEIR PHONES CLEAR AS DAY , I HAVE BEEN INFORMED FROM THE DIRECTOR OF COMUNICATIONS AT NOKIA VIA TWITTER THAT THIS THREAD IS OK AND THE TEST IMAGE IS FINE TO LOAD UP
The following has been added by vandelay (Nokia administrator) :
Please note that there is normally a slight variation in the purple color level in each display
unit. This is related to the display manufacturer's optical tuning process. However, some Nokia C7 and Nokia N8 users seem to be experiencing a
slightly higher level of purple color tint on their device screens.
Nokia Care's technical experts told me that the easiest way to spot this problem is to just look at the black idle screen of the device - if there is a clear purple color tint on the idle screen, you should have the device inspected at a Nokia Care point. They will repair the device the device under warranty if there is a clear defect in the device.
So seeing some purple on the test image does not necessarily mean that your screen is faulty, but we hope that it helps some people to decide whether they should visit a Nokia Care point.
    (end of vandelay's addition)
as you may or may not have read many n8s and c7s have a purple tint issue
this can easily be spoted by saving the picture below to your pc , transfering it to your n8/c7 , then viewing the image in your gallery
if the image shows purple squares in some areas then iam afraid you have one of the screens that is showing defects in gradiation of colurs and the greyscale
there are also many n8s out in the wild that dont have this problem , i have 3 n8s , my gfriend has one , hers is perfect and shows the test image with no purple tint at all my three n8s all have purple tint and some display it worse then others
the test image can be viewed on any brightness and it should display just as it does on your monitor screen ,my gfriends n8 displays the image perfect under all brightness levels yet my three n8s show the purple tint heavily on low brightness and not as much on full brightness
the test image can also be viewed via tv out and hdmi out and again if you have a defect screen you will see the image perfect on your tv yet on your n8 screen you will have purple tints
here is the test image for you to load to your device and view via the gallery
as stated above if you have one of the screens with defects in colour gradiation you will see some of the squares as purple
this shouldnt be happending as there n8s out there that display the test image perfectly
from all my research on this in the last month and my time studying ICT systems support in which i have a diploma , it seems clear to me that nokia have used at least two screens in the build of the n8
many phones bought between october launch and december dont have the problem yet there are still some that do but not as many as now , phones bought from the end of december up untill current date seem to have the issue moreand its now nearly impossible to find one without the purple tint issue
this leads me to believe that from the start nokia were using at least two screen in the n8 , then one started to run out around december and by the end of december a huge majority of n8/c7 handsets have the troubles, if not all of them shipped after december
infact ive been to every phone shop in lakeside , chelmsford , colchester which included : carphone warehouse , o2 , vodafone , orange , three ,  phones4u , tmobile all n8/c7 handsets i asked to look at had the problem not one n8 i looked at didnt have the issue
i have been in contact with nokia care escalation team , all they did is send me very badly refurbed handsets back for my brand new n8s ,  which across all three handsets had the following faults
    #hdmi covers scratched and worn
#no imei number under the hdmi cover on one of them
#torx screws on battery cover very worn
#plastic top caps not fitted right
#one had a huge gap between the silver screen surround and the main chasis of n8
#they all still had purple tint issue
so nokia sent me three refurbed handsets for my brand new n8s , i obvously complained as they were so new i could have taken them back to the shops with the reciept but now nokia had changed the imei numbers my reciept was useless , i said i should be sent three brand new n8s , they again sent me badly refurbed handsets just as bad as the 1st lot and again all three of them had purple screen issues
i complained again and this time supervsior took over the case and agreed that 3 new n8s should be sent to me as mine was so new , she got them sent out and this time they were new but they still have the purple screen issue
thats a toatal 12 n8s direct from nokia and all of them have had the issue  so i cant recomend going to a nokia care point or nokia care uk as the refurbs i was sent was a complete joke and looked like they were just used handsets that had been through a rough time
through this month of me talking to nokia and sending emails and getting these phones swapped back to a condition of the phones that i sent them , they have said they are investigating it and taking it seriously however after some of their actions towards users (myself included) on these forums it doesnt seem like they are taking it very serious at all , they have known about it for a month now and we still have not had an offical response from nokia themselves

    http://n8geeks.com/nokia-n8-amoled-display-issue/
there are many more threads about this issue across the net and if you google n8 screen problems or n8 purple screen problems you will come acroos many many pages of unhappy users from all across the globe
i just hope nokia sort this out soon
ho do you users with the problem feel about this issue and how do you think nokia should resolve it
id be happy for a screen swap at a nsc or via warranty postal repair as long as it could be done quickly and the user wasnt without their phone for too long after all this is nokias mistake and not the users that bought the phone so all fixes should be at minimal disturbance to them
heres hoping when you test the image your not as unlucky as me and many other n8 owners from across the globe , its a brilliant phone but this screen issue lets it down alot especially during watching films and stuff

sorry to hear you guys are having troubles too , its a shame sucha  great device as the nokia n8 has had an issue like this arise , it is effecting alot of n8/c7 handsets and is quite a widespread issue across the globe
it would be great to hear from as many users as possible about this and what they think about it as a user of the c7/n8
    jimmyireland about your post mate
yes it was written by me and yes it ws deleted not once but 3or4 times actually
the mods said it was because i had set up a poll and voting system , so i read through forum rules and posted it again with what fitted their guidelines and even put in big caps that it was not a poll but a thread to help users identify a problem and discuss it which is what the forum is for , it was deleted again , i then posted it again with just the test image and how to spot the problem and again put big caps that the post fitted their guidelines and was just to help users , it was again deleted and i was banned by mods for 2 days saying that i had broke forum rules and posted a poll and that the test image wasnt a proper test image
i then asked other users to post the image but when they tryed nokias spam filter kicked in with a message saying that their post contained spam and that they should write it again and try posting again
to be honest it really looked like they were trying to cover up the issue , fair enough my 1st post could be considered a very very rough poll but the posts i made afterwards were edited to fit nokias guidelines and they still removed them ad banned me and then other users posts were marked as spam
so i tweeted alot of people and even nokia have said that as long as the post doesnt contain polls/votes then it will be fine to postand that mods shouldnt delete it , which was excellent news and hopefull this thread will stay and users can load the image and test their screens and then discuss the issue here so nokia can see users discussion in one thread , it will alo help awareness of the issue
hence this post that isnt a poll but a thread to help users identify wether their n8/c7 has a screen with a defect in the gradiation of colours
as stated in original post not all n8s have this problem my gfriends doesnt and it displays the test image perfectly on all brightness settings , yet my n8s show the image as very purple on low brightness and the brighter the screen goes the less the purple is shown , it is still there just not as visible as it is in the lower brightness settings
as i also mentioned many n8s between october and mid december are fine although some still have the problem , yet from mid december till current date the amount of n8s with purple issue is much much higher and it now seems very very rare that you will get a brand new n8 from the shops without this screen issue which leads me to believe that from launch nokia have used at least two screens in the builds of the n8 , some great screens and then the ones with dodgy purple tint , from the threads across the web it seems like the good screens nokia were using either run out or they have failed to source the same screen or the manufactuer of the screen has changed something
iam not a nokia hater and iam not here to cause trouble or loose nokia sales etc
i love nokia have used them for years and used symbian since the 6680 , iam always helping users across the web with their nokia problems and am an avid user on nokia users please check my profile and feel free to check my posts and how many times ive been thanked for being helpfull
    http://www.nokiausers.net/forum/members/buxz777.html
as you can see i love nokia and spend alot of time using their devices , speaking highly of them and helping their users with problems, i also love good customer services and customer relations
i understand that big companys have build issues iam a gadget lover and trained in ict supprt iam not silly and understand that these things happend and building these phones with such complicated electronics and some could end up with issues , it could happend to anyone , sony , apple , samsung , blackberry , lg etc etc
however its how the companys react to these issues and relate to their customers that have spent 100s of pounds on their devices that is important , issues do arise , its how the company looks after its customers thats important
i think alot of users think the same , they dont expect nokia to click their fingers and go heres a fix but they do expect nokia to investigate the issue and they do expect nokia to relate to its customers and not ignore them or the issue which is what it looks like when posts are deleted and users are banned for posting informative posts that help users identify a problem
things like sending users really bad refurbs for brand new n8s also dont help users confidence in nokia statement of going to nokia care about the problem as all i got was second hand looking n8s that still have the problem they were sent off with and the originals were in much better condition
like i say iam not here to cause trouble and i love nokia the n8 is the best phone ive ever had and its almost my dream device and everything ive wanted on a device for years its the ultimate convergance device and agadget lovers dream , however when you see your gfriends and some of your mates n8 screens display the test image perfect then your n8 display it with a very purple hue it does dissapoint you and you do hope that nokia will take notice and fix the issue with the least amunt of hassle to the users
cheers jimmy and sorry about the long post just wanted to clear some things up
now lets get back to discussing the issue and what other users think about it
    have a great evening

  • Sound Blaster Zx driver install causes IO blue screen

    So things went like this:
I received my Sound Blaster Zx today. Opened it up, found that it contained some very handy instructions, so I followed those to the letter.
During the installation of the drivers, after I was prompted to choose whether or not to install the drivers by my Windows 7 64 bit (which obviously I chose to install), it blue screened with an IO error.
Then, presumably because the drivers didn't install correctly, it blue screened due to cthdb.sys every time I booted up.
I had to boot in safe mode and remove the drivers.
Then, I started up normally again. Windows automatically installed the drivers, even though it is said to do NOTHING when it detects a new device - no updates, no driver installation, no nothing. It installed the SAME drivers and so I had the IO blue screen again, and then blue screened due to cthdb.sys every time I booted.
Again I had to remove the drivers using safe mode.
No drivers will install without the card being installed, and if the card installed then the dodgy, BSOD causing drivers get installed automatically.
    What do I do?

Uninstall the sound driver via Device Manager and remove when asked all the drivers related so it doesnt reinstall them at every reboot.
Swap the card around until you find a good slot and uninstall drivers and disable in BIOS afterwards the onboard prior testing another driver.
Is the cards properly seated in the slot ?!
Ignore the metal stuff look at the slot.

  • Windows Blue Screen - when trying to re-sync an IPOD after doing 5 R's

My windows based Itunes failed to recognize my ipod, so I trouble shooted and finally ended up doing the 5 R's.
This resulted in a "Blank Ipod" (after restore).
I was able to successfully get Itunes to recognize my ipod after the restore. That is when a "major problem" occurred.
When my 37 gigs of MP3s on my PC attempt to automatically update onto my "blank ipod", my system crashes giving me the dreaded windows BLUE SCREEN! The error messgae indicates that a physical memory dump occurred and the system shuts down.
I figure it has something to do with all of those gigs trying to update onto the ipod. SO, I start to manually transfer (drag and drop) about 100 mp3s at a time onto the ipod within itunes. It still crashed after the 3rd batch of 100 mp3s.
Has anyone experienced this? Does it have anything to do with Mirosoft's newest IE vunerability? I use Firefox usually, but sometimes HAVE to use IE. What can I do?
    This really *****.
    thanks for your help.
    Zeppy
    Dell Dimension Windows XP

    hi zeppy!
hmmmmmm. a 0x7E? that's not the most commonly reported BSOD code here.
but the MS KB seemed to have at least one clue for us.
    (1) sometimes people can get blue screens when they plug in an ipod if their FireWire, USB, or dock has gone bad. i see from that STOP message resource that the 0x7E can be associated with dodgy USB.
by way of tracking down that possibility, do you still get the BSOD if you connect to a different port? (or, if you've got a dock, connect directly to a port instead?)
    (2) on general principles, we'd better check for malware. download fresh definitions and run vigorous virus and spyware scans. if your security software providers offer online scans, run those as well. (they can sometimes pick up an infection in cases where the security software on the PC has been compromised.)
    (3) especially if you've recently installed any new hardware on your PC, head into Device Manager to check to see if there's any alert/warning messages showing up next to any of your devices. if you see any, what do they say?
    (4) let's also let's also capture a minidump of the crash and send it to the Discussions Hosts, so they can throw it over the fence for the Apple engineers to analyze.
To set up your machine to capture a minidump, right click on "My Computer", select "Properties", select the "Advanced" tab, select the "Startup and Recovery" Settings button, select "small memory dump" from the popup. When it crashes, look for the MiniDump file. It's usually in the folder "C:\WINDOWS\Minidump" and is called something like Mini<number>-<number>.dmp.
And then send it to a Discussions Host. It doesn't hurt to put the URL to this discussion thread, so that whoever gets it has some context. Also give as much information about the context of the crash (in the email) as you can.

  • Invalid record count - grey screen- Target Mode Cures

    Hi there,
I have a common problem: I was doing nothing particular that I remember: No fancy file uploads, doanloads, creation, erasing - nothing special:
Anyway after a customary week, or few days of leaving the macbook permanently on, I think "let's give it a rest".
    Then switch back on:
    - Grey screen, spinning grey progress wheel fine.
    - Takes a while. Strange. After say a minute - it just switches off wordlessly.
    - Reset PRAM: No solution. Take a look with single-user startup in console: Files are all there, OK. Disk not dead.
    - Start up from OS X 10.5 disk:
    Permissions repair fine. Good.
Verify disk: FAIL! +*Invalid Record Count.Volume check failed.*+
Next: *Try target disk mode to back up essentials* - that works fine: I now have Time Machine AND a smaller important essentials backup.
But finally, here's the surprise: Just for kicks, I *shut the macbook down, try a reboot - and it works!*
But I note that root system files are unchanged since the problem occurred: ".hotfiles.btree" for example (I don't know what that is but suspect it's relevant).
Then: I tried restarting again - and back to square one, it won't boot.
Do the "Target disk" firewire mode trick again, and browse a few folders: And it boots (slowly).
If I just leave the Macbook on permanently - everything seems fine. Not even sluggish.
    So:
    - Why can connecting a disk with an incorrect file system in target disk make the system forget about these problems when booting?
    - Why does the problem return on a successive reboot?
    - Is it related to some system files being ignored if booting straight after a target mode session?
    - What is ".hotfiles.btree", and should it not exist ?
    And the big one:
    - +Can extended Applecare, wot cost me loads of money, help me?+

    Hi Cornelius:
Having been a faithful Apple-groupie for a while, and despite some problems over the years (hard drive failing, screen going, etc.) this is the first time I'm disappointed with them, because theor Micromat Applecare deal is a ripoff:
You fork out for Applecare extension: All you get is something that say "Yep, you've got a problem. Now go and buy techtoolpro".
That is, the TechTool Deluxe is practically useless. Argh.
Worse: They keep that rather quiet. If you run TechTool deluxe, and it fails: It points you to the Techtool site to
"download the TechTool Deluxe software with diagnostic and repair capabilities".
You think "Aha, right, I need an update, or a DMG rather than just the executable".
    Download another 1.25Gb.
So you try again: Same thing.
The chiselling little crooks, to quote Ken Livingstone, won't even come out and say "Buy TechTool Pro to fix it". The website as reported above is wrong.
Result: I'm not happy with them. And I'll never buy anything off Micromat.
In the meantime, I've got a bootable backup thanks to CC-Cloner (excellent, I'll send him some money), and I'm waiting until I don't have any critical deadlines to allow myself time to restore a daily bootable backup.
The dodgy files seem to be the Sun Developper Java suite according to CC Cloner.

  • Macbook Pro 2011 won't boot, grey screen, 10.9.4

Hi guy I hope you are all well,
I have been running a 1.1 MBP Santa Rosa since 2010 and decided it was time for an update, so in January I got hold of a 2008 Penrhyn model. That was running Mavericks absolutely fine until 2 weeks after 10.9.3 when it began to have gfx crashes, kernel panics, refuse to boot etc. Now it won't even turn on, just a low fan noise for 10 secs then it switches itself off.
I figured the Penrhyn was just too long in the tooth now and must have had dodgy hardware. Nothing I've made this year will now work on the Santa Rosa on Snowy so I decided to splash out on a mid-2011 Sandy Beach, 15.4" 2.0ghz i7. This has been absolutely great the last month, until the day I went up to 10.9.4. It began to crash and need rebooting when iPhoto opens after plugging in my iPhone. At first I disabled iPhoto's auto-open and the phone works fine with iTunes and charges when iPhoto is closed. Without the phone plugged in iPhoto worked fine. Inevitably I plugged the phone in last night while iPhoto was still open. The screen went a purple-pattern, I rebooted and now it won't boot past the apple logo and pie-wheel at the chime. It just goes to a grey screen.
Recovery does not work, just a solid blue screen. Booting off a Lion install DVD also just gets a grey screen after the logo/chime. I cleared the PRAM, and the SMC three times. Starting in safe-mode the progress bar loads fine, but then it's back to grey screen.
So I'm now back on my Santa Rosa, which has never had a fault, nor may I add have any of my PPC Macs!
Anyone have a possible solution for this or know what the exact hardware-fault may be? I really don't want to pay Apple to repair it, having spent on over £1000 on MBPs this year that now don't turn on
    Many thanks, James

I've been having similar issues with a late 2011 17" MBP with 10.9.4.  I haven't worked out what the problem is, but I'm eventually able to enter recovery mode after multiple (15-30) attempts.  Between attempts, I tried resetting the PRAM, entering safe mode, entering hardware diagnostics mode, and occasionally just leting it hang on the blue or grey screen.
Repairing disk permissions fixes the problem.  It's happened twice now, with an hour or two of panic between getting it back up and running again.  It's only been since the 10.9.3 or 10.9.4 update, which other users have experienced problems with.  I didn't make a backup before updating (this is the first issue I've ever had with my machine), so I may have to start with a fresh install to determine if it's software or hardware.
