Don't install 10.5.7

Ever since the update I have been unable to connect to my hidden network. The wifi in my apartment was set up not to broadcast an SSID so that no one would even see it to try to mooch off us, but after I installed the update suddenly I couldn't connect anymore. I set up a work around by turning on the broadcasting, but this was very annoying.

Welcome to the forums - and thanks for sharing your experience with us.
In my case, my wireless network works well with my MacBook - whether hidden or broadcast (I normally broadcast it, because I use a strong enough WPA2 key to prevent anyone from joining in without an invitation).
This suggests that it might not be an inherent flaw in 10.5.7 - but something that has not worked in your particular situation. Even if it was a flaw - the security updates in 10.5.7 would make it well worth adopting whilst broadcasting the SSID.
Have you tried deleting the settings for the SSID on your MacBook and reentering them?
Cheers,
Rodney

  • Apple going MS style - don't install Lion if you don't need to

    Hi,
I am obviously frustrated. I want to warn anyone with an Apple MacBook, MacBook Air or iMac that is not very recent. If you do not need Lion, don't install it. It is a disaster.
Don't get me wrong. I am a huge Apple fun, but with this release I am getting a degavu regarding my MS Windows history. Lion has similar "features" as Windows has and which were my original reason the happily get rid of MS Windows. Apple has gone totally the wrong way with this release if you ask me.
Problem I have since I installed Lion:
    - non responsive applications for no apparent reason.
    - hanging system several times a day.
    - having to reboot my system to get any response from it several time a day.
    - totally unpredicatable battery lifetime of my MacBooks. Mostly less than half the original amount before installing Lion.
This is not just on a single system, but on all systems I have. All systems were bought during 2007.
In my opinion this release is in it's current state a disaster and absolutely not Apple worthy. I hope they fire some people at Apple for this, becaus this will damage the brand in my opinion and should never happen again.
Why MS style (in my opinion)? Apple has given a lot of focus on useless graphical features (LaunchPad and MissionControl) (also degavu regarding MS). Well I can tell you it is not worth it. Snow Leopard was working like a charm. Lion is more like a Snail.
I hope Apple will come with updates really quickly, otherwise I am afraid the are now on the same quality level as MS. The point have always been happy to pay the Apple prices, because they were absolutely worth it. I can get poor quality for much less money. Even though this update is very cheap, it is still not worth the money.
    Best regards,

I have two other email accounts so the loss of loss of apple email is no big thing.  Cheaper cell phones is not a bad thing either
so ha ha back at ya

Don't install the keyboard update! It will fix some bugs on IOUSBFamily which allowed the mirror widget/photobooth hack.
In other words, if you install the keyboard update, you won't be able to shut your macbook up when it whines using the mirror/photobooth hack.
So unless you can't hear the whine or it doesnt concern you, don't install it.

To "undo" the patch, you need Pacifist and your Tiger DVD #1
With Pacifist open the following Package :
    Your Tiger DVD/System/Library/Installation/Packages/Essentials.pkg
Then select in the file list :
    System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext
Click "Install". It will ask you if you want to replace the files, select "Replace" (you can check the box if you want).
Then exit Pacifist, repair the authorizations of your hard drive. This will revert back to the 10.4.5 driver and should allow you to use Mirror/Photobooth and even MagicNoiseKiller.
    Restart.
As always remerber that this trick modify your system folder. If something goes wrong you can screw your installation. So SAVE YOUR DATA BEFORE TO DO THIS. DO NOT TRY IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU DO.

  • Why don't installed SSIS Add-ins appear in either the Toolbox or SSIS Toolbox?

    Greetings!
Why don't installed SSIS Add-ins appear in either the Toolbox or SSIS Toolbox? I have restarted Visual Studio and (heard this might work) restarted the SSIS service, but I still never see any installed add-in.
    Thank you.
    ---------------- GeorgeS, aka "SQLPadawan"

    Hi George,
What’s the version of your SQL Server? If the SQL Server Integration Services version is 2012, we should use SSDT which can be installed from Shared Features or SQL Server Data Tools – Business Intelligence for Visual Studio 2012 which should be installed
separately or installed within Professional, Ultimate, or Premium Edition of Visual Studio 2012.
If the SQL Server Integration Services version is 2014(except Microsoft SQL Server 2014 CTP2), we can only use this tool Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools - Business Intelligence for Visual Studio 2013.
The difference between SSDT for Visual Studio versions as below:
SSDT-BI for Visual Studio 2013 (SSDT-BI for SQL Server 2014) will support various SQL Server versions as follows:
SSAS projects can target SQL Server 2014 or lower
SSRS projects can target SQL Server 2014 or lower
SSIS projects can target only SQL Server 2014
SSDT-BI for Visual Studio 2012 and SQL Server Data Tools - Visual Studio 2010 support versions of SQL Server as follows:
SSAS project can target SQL 2012 or lower
SSRS project can target SQL 2012 or lower
SSIS project can target only SQL 2012
So please open the right SQL Server Data Tools, then based on the SQL Server version to refresh the component. For more details, please see blog post by Vaibhav.

  • HT201364 why i don't install mac os x maverick for macbook pro retina later 2013?

why i don't install mac os x maverick for macbook pro retina later 2013?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The Late 2013 MacBook Pro already comes with OS X Mavericks. However, if you try to download OS X Mavericks from the Mac App Store, you will get a message telling you that your MacBook Pro is not compatible, when it is.
This is caused because the Late 2013 MacBook Pro is running a special OS X Mavericks version which is different than the version available in the Mac App Store. This makes that you get an error message when you try to download OS X Mavericks even when you are using it.
Instead of downloading OS X Mavericks from the Mac App Store, you can still download OS X Mavericks to reinstall OS X through OS X Recovery > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718 You will be able to download OS X Mavericks from the Mac App Store when your MacBook Pro uses the same version as all other Macs

  • Apps don't install (no SIM)

I gave my iPhone 3G (iOS 4.2.1) to my kid so that he can play (but not call: there is no SIM card).
He has an iTunes account but apps don't install.
    Any idea?
    Thanks in advance.

Well, you need to get a sim card for this phone. The sim card need not be activated, but it must be valid & present to reactivate the phone. You can't activate any GSM iPhone without a valid sim card installed in the phone.
Once you get the sim card: Turn off iMessage, FaceTime & delete the iCloud account, if such were setup/used on the phone. Then: Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content & Settings. Set the phone up using your child's Apple ID. You should be good to go.

  • Don't Install Verizon FIOS!

    Dear Verizon,
I received numerous calls from Verizon urging me to switch to FIOS due to the many service outages in my area.  Verizon promised that the switch would be absolutely free and cost me nothing while I retained the same services.  The representatives were very excited to tell me that I’d even save money by switching to FIOS.  I’d get much faster Internet at no extra charge and free long distance just by switching to FIOS.  Plus FIOS is guaranteed, so I could try it for thirty (30) days and if I didn’t like it, I could switch back at no charge.
My DSL frequently does not work and the technical support refuses to fix it.  According to tech support, there is a special repair ticket that only a supervisor can touch and no one can touch it except for the special supervisor.  This is the second week I’ve been waiting for the special supervisor to touch the special repair ticket.  I’m still waiting.
I called billing/customer service to get credit for no DSL service and was quoted a FIOS rate with several discounts as the only alternative to defective DSL service.
I’m declining your appointment to install FIOS.  The bill you sent is nearly three (3) times higher than the price that you quoted.  It does not include any of the promised discounts.  It starts higher than your advertised rate.
A search engine and the term “Verizon overbilling”, will yield many customer complaints about excessive charges.  Thanks, but I don’t want to be over billed.
Here’s one at: http://verizon.pissedconsumer.com/verizon-overbilling-20120723334108.html    The customer says, “ More than half of the time Verizon makes billing "errors" (always in its favor).  Verizon is now trying to charge us $459.91 for a "PC configuration" service that was never requested or carried out. We didn't even know that such a service exists (and would refuse it at that price). So far five calls, maybe four hours total, to get the bogus charge removed. No luck yet.
Isn’t odd how those excessive billing “errors” are always in favor of Verizon.  It is amazing!
Then there is the $459.91 charge for a service never ordered or provided.  Even after four (4) hours on the phone, the bill still isn’t corrected!
I know what it’s like to spend many, many hours on the phone with Verizon, but more about that later.
Since you have no qualms about billing three times higher than the quoted price, then you should be agreeable to three times less than the quoted price, in which case you will be paying me.
I also don’t like “bait and switch”.  That’s where you quote a price that you never intended to honor.  The price is just to bait the customer, but then you switch to a higher price.  Of course you have lots and lots of excuses as to why the price is so much higher.  Oh by the way, “bait and switch” is illegal in this state.
The Verizon representative who quoted the FIOS price also promised that a supervisor would reach out to me (that means call back) about a related issue and that the FIOS installation appointment would be set by the customer, rather than Verizon.  The supervisor never called, they never do!  Verizon unilaterally set the appointment without considering or contacting me.
On my subsequent calls, a supervisor has NEVER been available to speak to me and NEVER called back despite promises to “reach out to me”.  There is no fax number or email to reach a supervisor.
When asked for alternative help, Verizon customer service representatives do not know the name of the company President, or the address or phone number of the corporate office or any other source of help.  The representatives have never heard of a customer advocate or assistant, an executive team, an escalation group or any other help for the exhausted customer.
All the representatives can do is transfer the call to a wrong number or disconnect the call so the customer gets to start all over again.  After all, a customer’s time isn’t worth anything!
Yet the Verzion website boasts, “Our customer support team is here to help”.  Really?  Help who?
I called Verizon to decline the installation appointment.  Informing the Verizon billing department wasn’t sufficient, as I had to wait on hold while billing got a member of the FIOS Team on the line.
The FIOS team representative started the conversation with, “So you’re calling to cancel your services”.  I explained that I was not canceling any services.  I was declining a FIOS installation appointment that was set unilaterally by Verizon.  The Verizon representative said that if I canceled my FIOS service that I would have NO service at all since the area is being switched over to FIOS.  I explained that I don’t have FIOS and so I can’t cancel FIOS since I don’t have it to begin with.  I’m keeping all services.
The representative’s intimidation tactics continued as she said she was putting in the notes that she warned me.  I replied that I have regular service that is not FIOS and Verizon could call me when they get to the point that the only service they offer is exclusively FIOS.  The Verizon representative said that’s not how they do it, they will just shut off all services without notice.
I replied that I don’t think that is ethical.  So what happened to the free switch to FIOS that costs me nothing?  How could FIOS be guaranteed since switching back in 30 days would clearly result in the termination of all services?  What kind of guarantee is that?
I again called billing/customer service twice to explain to two (2) different representatives that I am not canceling anything.  I am merely declining your gracious offer to install FIOS at an outrageous price that is far more than my regular monthly bill and nearly three (3) times higher than the price that you quoted.  Of course this consumed hours more of my time on the phone while I waited to speak with a supervisor that was NOT available, and did not call me back.
Although I made it repeatedly clear that I am not canceling any services but merely declining an installation appointment, I wouldn’t be surprised if Verizon trucks arrive anyway.
In the meantime I continue to await delivery of the box of Ethernet cables.  DSL tech support declined to fix the DSL service because my wireless modem/router was connected to my wireless computer.  According to tech support this is not allowed and the only way to have Internet service is via Ethernet cable.  So tech service refused to help.  I’m going to need several different length cables.  Some short ones for when I am near the modem/router and a very long one for when I am in other rooms.  Please expedite the shipment of a 200 foot Ethernet cable so that tech support will finally restore my DSL service.  Thanks.

All you need to do is plug the Ethernet cord in to your new computer. No software is needed. If your want the software installed go to activatemyfios.verizon.net click configure additional computer. Type in your Verizon user name and password and follow the prompts.

  • Warning: Don't install Windows 7 64-bit on Older MacBook Pros

I totally hosed my machine by installing Windows 7 64 bit on a MacBook Pro that Apple has not deemed to be okay with running Snow Leopard in 64-bit. I have a Core 2 Due, which is fully 64-bit. Windows 7 64-bit runs perfectly on a MacBook Pro, but Apple's Snow Leopard can only handle 32-bits. Crazy.
I'm guessing Windows 7 updated the MacBook Pro's EFI to 64 bit, which since my Firmware hasn't been updated, can't recognize or load. Some I'm stuck.
Does anyone know how to return a 64 bit efi back to its original 32 bit version? I've been forced to reinstall Snow Leopard, hopefully the Disk Image I created will be able to bring back my data, otherwise I'm screwed and really ******.

I don't think Windows 7 would normally modify your Guid Partition Table, but Boot Camp
(particularly the later versions) is rapidly gaining a nasty reputation for hosing partition maps.
    Test Disk might could help:
    http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk
You will need to boot it in firewire mode (if supported) or from an external clone.
I hope your disk image is good. Rule of thumb for OS Disk Images:
    Make them sparseimage or sparsebundle, do not compress, and last but not least;
Make 2 of them. Just some friendly advice.
I have yet to see anyone repair a defective, compressed, UDIF disk image. I have
successfully repaired sparse UDSP/UDSB images using either disk utility and/or Disk Warrior
and/or iPartition or some combination of the three.
I'm not against disk images, to the contrary, I use them almost exclusively for backup lately.
I mount them, then place a clone or data on them using Carbon Copy Cloner or Chronosync.
Of course I only use UDSP/UDSB uncompressed images.

  • DON'T Install Snow Leopard on early MacBook Pro with Firmware password on!!

I'm going to summarize my postings from yesterday because I don't want anyone wasting their night like I did.
Many of us who upgraded from Tiger created a Firmware password to ensure that people won't be able to wipe and re-install the HD for sale if the computer gets stolen. I also note that, like me, many have been suffering the recent won't wake from sleep issues that make it feel like the HD is dead. Sometimes it starts from sleep, mostly it's a real hassle to get it to wake up and when it does it's generally in safe sleep mode. I managed to find a "halfway" good fix for that issue by changing the sleep mode from 0 to 3 in the terminal, found a useful script by Googling the problem. Fixes 90% of my issues on that score. But I wanted to install Snow Leopard to "hopefully" fix that issue for good.
HOWEVER, if you have a MacBook Pro 2006-2007 model and the original install disc is still Tiger, WARNING TURN OFF THE FIRMWARE PASSWORD if you created one before you attempt an install. Otherwise you'll be completely stuck in black screen **** and you cannot restart from the Snow Leopard disc once you have it in, neither can you eject it because you never get that far.
The computer, after installing Snow Leopard just gets stuck on the grey screen for a while and then goes black. The computer will not boot from the Snow Leopard disc, Techtool Protege or Leopard disc and the BIGGEST PROBLEM is; you can't Zap the PRAM with firmware active to try and continue installation as some other posters have suggested. Basically, you're screwed.
To get the Snow Leopard disc out I rebooted in Windows and ejected the disc, then put in first the Leopard disc... didn't work... then rebooted, ejected and put in the original installation disc with Tiger, that did work but no firmware password reset!!!
The only solution was for me to wipe the disc, reinstall Tiger from the original install disc, which was the only one that worked. Once I could restart the computer again in Tiger, I was finally able to reboot from the Leopard disc and disable the firmware password.
Then I restarted, zapped the PRAM and using the Leopard disc, restored my machine to its former self with my Time Machine back up. Ran Techtool Pro 5 to fix permissions and rebuild volumes etc. and now have it working again.
I think I'll leave Snow Leopard for a while since I don't know whether the zapping PRAM works during install and frankly, don't have the time to go through this entire debilitating process again. If anyone does manage to get things running on the earlier MacBook Pros please let me know how it went!
Anyway, just thought I'd give people a heads up on the Firmware password thing... it's really a bugger on the older models because it wasn't originally included on the original install disc leaving you with no options!!

Sorry, just wnated to post a comment not question, wasn't sure how to mark it!
