Downgrading main account from Administrator to Standard--will I be sorry?

My New Year's resolution is to downgrade my main the one my Mac boots into from Administrator to Standard. I plan to do this by un-checking the "Allow User to Administer Computer" box in System Preferences, Users and Groups. My theory is that this should do no harm and may improve my security in the event that I accidentally click on a malware link or something.
I've created a second account that does have administrator's privileges, so that I will have a way to re-enable them on my main account if I need to. I don't want to start fresh in a brand-new standard account because I have too many preference settings and other things in my current account.
Before I do this, can anyone can tell me in advance what the consequences will be? Will it create any nuisance problems in the account, which has always had administrator privileges, or will I just be prompted for an administrator's name and password a little more often than I am now?
Could I paint myself into a corner and find I could not re-enable administrator privileges?

It should not cause any problems. You will still be able to authenticate certain things in the Standard account by typing in both the other username and password from the admin account. So, you may not even need to switch accounts very often.

I am not sharing my computer either. I have an administrator account. I don't use a password to sign in,
I have been trying to delete something I scaneed in and then I decided I didn't need it. I tried to delete and
got the message administrator permission needed. It does not ask me for a password ( I do not have a password), so
what is the answer? Following the help on the computer it advised to set up a standard account, but then the computer dowen't allow you to change to standard.

  • AV not working after changing account from admin to standard

So I have a user account that was set as administrator. I removed admin privileges from that account and made it into a standard account. A few days later I noticed that I could no longer video chat with anyone (though I could chat via typing). I rebooted my router and computer a million times thinking it must be something else. But then I remembered changing the user account, and as soon as I reset the account as admin video chat immediately started working again.
This doesn't make any sense to me. I don't see why changing my admin account into a standard one should keep me from video chatting. But if there is a workaround, I would really like to know.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
Have you done anything with Parental Controls with this account ?
In/as Standard Account in the Mac Firewall is UDP Traffic Blocked ? (System Preferences > Sharing > Firewall tab).
Parental Controls is the most likely.
Otherwise I would be stuck as to a suggestion.

  • I have two users on my laptop. when i try to share my itune files from the main account, the second acount itunes will not find the files. the help suggestions must be for an older version of itunes. when i click find files-nothing happens.

I cannot share itune files on the same laptop. I have two users on my laptop using windows 7.file sharing is turned on,when i click on the itune startup screen-find music files, nothing happens. the instructions in the help section must be from an earlier version of itunes because the edit folder is not laid out like it describes.

Have you rendered both iOS 7 and iOS 8 (both of which will work on your iPhone 5) out of the question entirely without trying every possible configuration? The animations can be disabled entirely, if that's the problem. And if the whiter-brighter user interface is the problem, there's reverse-contrast modes that darken everything. You can expose accessibility controls to gain immediate access to these functions to toggle them on and off. I guess my point is you may have decided against upgrading the OS based on an early experience with iOS 7 when Apple has since made changes in later revisions to address some of the usability complaints.
Now, Apple's instructions for downloading older versions of apps is to do so from the Purchased list, not from the app's product page.
    See here:
Install the latest compatible version of an app on an earlier version of iOS or OS X - Apple Support
Let us know how that works for you.

  • Jaadu VNC seems to have changed my account from administrator to a regular

Just installed Jaadu VNC for the iPhone. To connect you need to install two apps that you download from the jaaduvnc.com website. I did that and all seemed to work fine...untill I discovered that somewhere during that process my account got changed from an administrator account into a regular account.
Basically, what this means is that I have no longer access to any system preferences on my MacBook Pro. I certainly did not change any passwords or account settings.
Anybody have had similar experiences? What can I do?

    Hi ignitemymac,
If you haven't already, try contacting the developers of the application from here: http://www.jaaduvnc.com/contact
Do you have more than one user account on your Mac?
You may be able to resolve the issue by following the steps in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1278

  • Will Lion install correctly handle multiple accounts from Snow Leopard?

Will Lion install correctly handle multiple accounts from Snow Leopard? Will current settings, DOCS etc be carried over?

I found the solution to my problem after I upgraded and it lies with the X509 Anchors.
SOLUTION:  Go to /Library/Preferences/com.apple.security-common.plist (it may be a hidden file) and change it to /Library/Preferences/com.apple.security-common.plist.bak.  This should remove the system calling to old outdated anchors and allow it to use the new security protocols under Lion's sandboxing feature.
It worked for me and mail runs fine.

  • Went from 10.4 to 10.5 and my main account became a group somehow

I updated from 10.4.11 to 10.5. Upon restart, I was only offered my alternate account, not my usual, main account, to log in. I went ahead and logged in as the alternate account and went to the Accounts preference pane. When I clicked the lock, I was prompted to enter an administrator ID and password. I did only to be rejected. I tried using my short user ID name. No luck. So I got on the support page and found a way to change my root password. I did and was able to log on as System Administrator. I then updated to 10.5.5 That didn't help. Using the Accounts preference pane, I found that my old main ID was listed as a "group" not an "account." So I went back to the support forums where I found several suggestions (I tried Article: TS1543) that involved entering text commands as a "single user." I tried those to no avail. I found the discussions about this issue and followed them with no luck. I tried the terminal command; dscl . read /groups/admin and got the following:
    Edit-Desk:~ root# dscl . read /groups/admin
    dsAttrTypeNative:Groupmembership: root
    AppleMetaNodeLocation: /Local/Default
    GeneratedUID: DCFE80EB-7CF5-499B-8E9A-ABF8DB0FAF83
    GroupMembership: TF
    PrimaryGroupID: 80
    RecordName: admin
    RecordType: dsRecTypeNative:groups
I am not sure, but doesn't that show my old main account (TF) as the administrator? Yet, I can't log in as that account and it isn't listed as an account on my preferences pane.
    I am at a loss.

the directory services record for your main account got corrupted. that seems to be a reasonably common problem. log in as root and run the following terminal command
    rm /var/db/dslocal/nodes/Default/users/short-user-name.plist
Instead of short-user-name put in the above the short name of the migrated user. It's the same as the name of that user's home directory in /Users folder. Please make sure you copy the command EXACTLY as given. it's very important. we don't want to delete the wrong thing here.
Restart and try creating the account with the shortname of the main user. it will say that a home directory by that name already exists and ask if you want to use it. say "yes". that should restore your main user.

  • Photoshop Elements 11 installed on Mac Mini OS X 10.9.5. Application running successfully on bot main user and administrative accounts for considerable time with no warning messages. When established a new user account on same computer and try to call up

Photoshop Elements 11 installed on Mac Mini OS X 10.9.5. Application running successfully on bot main user and administrative accounts for considerable time with no warning messages. When established a new user account on same computer and try to call up elements receive message “Some ot the application components are missing from the Application directory. Please reinstall the application.” How do I correct this problem without disturbing application in main user account?

Brooks lansing if you create a new Administrator account does the same issue occur?  If so then it is likely that there is a file permission failure and file permissions have been set for the existing Users instead of the groups they belong to.
Have you removed and reinstalled Photoshop Elements 11?  This may reset the file permissions to the correct state to allow it to work under new accounts.

  • I want to copy filters from one account to another, in particular to the main account.

I have some filters I imported from Eudora to Thunderbird. I want these filters to work on all accounts. I know that I can copy msgFilterRules.dat from one account to another, but there seems to be no entry in my profile folder for one account. It is my main account and was created when I imported from Eudora. There is a file named global-messages-db.sqlite which seems to contain many messages for the "missing" account, but there is no entry in the profile folder>Mail folder for that main account.

Is the main account an IMAP mail account? Then it will be under the 'IMAPMail' folder. Local folders and Pop mail accounts are under 'Mail' folder.
You can check where the main account is pointing to so to locate it.
Tools > Account Settings > Server Settings for the main account.
look bottom right under 'Local directory'.

  • My husband's gmail account works fine in standard view but mine has to be put in HTML only to keep it from locking up.

My husband has had a gmail account for two years. When I switched from IE8 to Firefox 3.6 last week the account switched over with no problems. Loads and runs normally in standard view. I created my own gmail account yesterday and if I can't use it in standard view. It won't let me reply, open settings, sign out, etc. I can open emails and use the "back to inbox" button but clicking anything else locks up the whole browser. The only way around this issue is to switch to "HTML only" view which I don't particularly care for. Any idea why? I also added my ISP's McAfee security suite after switching to Firefox last week. I'm not getting an error message from either one but my ISP assures me that the problem isn't the anti-virus software. Any idea what could be causing this and how to fix it?

Settings > iCloud > Delete Account will only delete his account from your iPad. Then you can add your own.

  • Can I remove admin permissions from main account then create new one?

I have heard that it is considered best practice to use an account that does not have administrator permissions for normal use, especially when connected to the internet for safety reasons. I am the only user of my Macbook and only have one account, the one that was created when I first used the computer. I obviously don't want to have to start all over again and so is there a way that I can safely create a new account, give it administrator permissions that I would use just for times when I need to make system changes and remove the admin permissions from my first account so that I don't have to migrate all my files and setting to a new user account?

Yes it is, for security reasons. When you log in as an administrator, everything you do, every command you run, runs with admin privileges. If you open a trojan or other malware as an administrator, you hand over much of your system to the malware. By running as non-admin, only the contents of your home folder are vulnerable.
Consider a trojan that modifies Safari, so that next time you make an online purchase, Safari captures your credit card number and sends it to a third party. If you opened that trojan as an administrator, the trojan could install itself without your knowledge. If you were running as non-admin, it would have been stopped in its tracks.
If you need any more convincing, you can read what Apple has to say about it:
Each user needing administrator access should have an individual administrator account in addition to a standard or managed account. Administrator users should only use their administrator accounts for administrator purposes. By requiring an administrator to have a personal account for typical use and an administrator account for administrator purposes, you reduce the risk of an administrator inadvertently performing actions like accidentally reconfiguring secure system preferences.
Unless administrator access is required, you should always log in as a nonadministrator user. You should log out of the administrator account when you are not using the computer as an administrator.
