DPM 2012 Replace secondary server

DPM
2012R2 UR 3
I had a secondary server die, and am trying to re-setup thee secondary server and
am running into problems
I am attempting to backup my 2 primary DPM servers (DPM1 and DPM2) with a 3rd DPM
server (DPM3).
I run in to 2 issues.
Through the console,  i will install the agent on DPM1 and DPM2,  and it says
it installed successfully. Then I will go and try to configure protection for that server:
It lists the server I "installed" the agent on,  and shows it as a DPM server
However, when i expand the server to list the items to back up it throws an error
"DPM is unable to enumerate contents in 06eb093b9b0d43cebb20ad33fa7d83d3,
ect ect"    It will allow me to backup the SQL server and the C
drive.
What I think is going on is that the agent is not being installed on the primary dpm
server (DPM1 and DPM2).
So I manually try to install the agent on DPM1 and I get another error that says
"Protection agent cannot be installed on machine where dpm is installed
DPM"

on the DPM server I am trying to backup I get the following error in the Application log:
The description for Event ID 945 from source MSDPM cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.
If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.
The following information was included with the event:
Unable to connect to the DPM database because of a general database failure.  Make sure that SQL Server is running and that it is configured correctly.

  • Installing DPM 2012 SP1 onto Server 2012 R2 (Compatible / Supported)?

    Hi,
Can DPM 2012 SP1 be installed onto Server 2012 R2? i.e. is it compatible and also is it supported by Microsoft?
If so are there any official documents or links provided by Microsoft for this installation scenario?
I would have installed DPM 2012 R2 onto Server 2012 R2 but this is not possible due to DPM 2012 R2 not supporting Server 2008 protected servers!
    Thanks,
    Microsoft Partner

    Hi,
DPM 2012 SP1 is not supported running on Windows server 2012 R2.

Can you tell me how many Windows 2008 servers you need to protect and what is preventing you from upgrading them to Windows 2008 R2 ?

  • Procedure performing a "Retry Secondary Site" Operation in SCCM 2012 R2 Secondary Server

    Dear Brother,
My SCCM 2012 R2 Secondary Site Server, unfortunately crashed and required to be restored, doing this I end up performing a "Retry Secondary Site Operation.
One by one I am clearing out the errors but there are few remaining errors on the prerequisite checks:
1.[Failed]:The logon account for the SQL Server service cannot be a local user account, NT SERVICE\<sql service name> or LOCAL SERVICE.  You must configure the SQL Server service to use a valid domain account, NETWORK SERVICE, or LOCAL SYSTEM.
Actions Done: SQL Related Services use Logon As Domain Account "Microsoft-Domain\BillAdmin" , but still the above message still appears in the logs.
    Actions Done: None
2.[Failed]:The collation of the site database does not match the collation of the parent site's database.  All sites in a hierarchy must use the same database collation.
3.[Failed]:The site server might be unable to publish to Active Directory. The computer account for the site server must have Full Control permissions to the System Management container in its Active Directory domain. You can ignore this warning if you have
manually verified these permissions. For more information about your options to configure required permissions, see
    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkId=233190.
Actions Done: None, as this machine is previously a working Secondary site for 1 Year already. So I do not suspect anything from the current related configuration.
4.[Failed]: Either the user account running Configuration Manager Setup does not have sysadmin SQL Server role permissions on the SQL Server instance selected for site database installation, or the SQL Server instance could not be contacted to verify permissions.
    Setup cannot continue.
Action Taken:  Domain Account "Microsoft-Domain\BillAdmin" has a
Sysadmin roles and actually all the check boxes are chosen to acquire all SQL account roles"
    5. [Failed]:Prerequisite checks complete with failure - check ConfigMgrPrereq.log
in the root of the primary site server system drive.
6[Failed]:Unable to complete secondary site server installation - check ConfigMgrSetup.log in the root of the secondary site server system drive.

  • DPM 2012 R2 Reporting Server locations

I' m just looking to see what is and what is and not supported for a DPM 2012 R2 Topology for the SSRS.
When using multiple DPM servers with SSRS installed locally on the DPM server. Does each SSRS instance need a separate ReportServerDB on a remote SQL server running the SQL DB Engine. Or can they report to the 1 ReportServer DB on the remote SQL server?
I know I can have each SSRS instance installed on each DPM server point to the same SQL Server but creating multiple ReportServer databases.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Single DPM server with SQL installed locally = SSRS is used locally.
Multiple DPM servers sharing a remote SQL server instance  = SSRS will also be shared in same SQL instance.
Multiple DPM Servers sharing a clustered SQL Server instance = SSRS will need to be on separate non-clustered SQL Server.  For each DPM server using the same standalone SQL Server instance - the SSRS will be shared.

  • DPM 2012 R2 - Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-v backup of Windows Server 2003 R2 - Non-retryable error 0x80070490

    Hi,
I have a hyper-v host running Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard with Hyper-V on it, and on that host I got 5 virtual machines running and of those 5, 4 of those the DPM are able to backup but when DPM tries to backup a server running Windows Server 2003 R2
I get the following errors in the eventlog.

What I have done to try to troubleshoot this issue is:
    Reinstalled DPM - No sucess
Restarted the Hyper-v Host - No sucess
I'm at the point where I am out of ideas and google hasn't given me much.
    /Joseph

    i have the same error.
"vssadmin list writers" shows last error unknown for all writers
    disk space is sufficient
ntbackup of systemdrive and systemstate runs fine.
i installed KB940349 which fixes some vss related issues but the problem is still there.
    any ideas?
    Thanks.
When you have vssadmin reporting unknown error the only way to reset the vsswriters (as I understand it please correct me if I'm wrong :) ) is to restart the machine. The Fellenator is correct, make use that the vsswriter is working correctly since this
is the main function DPM is using when taking backup. He's also right in saying that it's outside the scope! Create a new thread on your error, then you will get much better responce!

  • Server 2012 replacement for Server 2003 catalogs and ixsso.dll

Previously, we used the Indexing Service on Windows Service 2003 to set up catalogs and then used ixsso.dll to write web apps that could query the catalogs. With Windows Server 2012 things apparently have changed. How would I accomplish something similar
with Windows Server 2012? I've been searching but I guess I don't know what I'm looking for. Can someone point me in the right direction? What buzzwords am I looking for with Server 2012?
    Thanks
    Terry

    Hi,
In Windows 2012 the indexing service has gone. To work around for this we may try putting the windows indexing service command line tool and dll’s in the System32 folder.

  • Connection dropped between DPM and Agent during consistency check, following DPM 2012 SP1 to DPM 2012 R2

Recently I have updated a DPM 2012 SP1 standalone server to DPM 2012 R2. That it’s self was a challenge... Following the upgrade most of the protection groups required consistency checks. For some time I have been having problems performing these consistency
checks on remote servers over a 10Meg link.
On the DPM server I would kick off a ping to the remote host, then start a consistency check. Within a few seconds I would start to get dropped pings, and very large ping response times, 3000ms plus. Within 3 minutes the pings would time out completely and
no connections can be made to the remote server, RDP etc. However any other server on the network can connect to the remote client. Eventually the DPM jobs times out and sometime later the pings also return.
The resolution to this has taken some digging but this is what I have found. The DPM agent update does not seem to fully work and requires a reinstall. Here is my process:
    Logon to remote client server
Install .net 4 (a raw install of the client requires this, may not be needed when done via DPM)
Via Add Remove Programs, remove DPM agent
    Clean up Reg
    Delete "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Data Protection Manager"
Delete "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\DPM**" (However this key is not there for me)
    Back onto DPM Server
Modified protection groups as required to remove all instances of the client server
    Remove Agent for client server
Install agent via DPM (watch for the glitch right at the end where it does a failed, then succeed…)
    REBOOT client server
    Add back into protection group
    Consistency check kicked off automatically
This seems to have fixed the issue.

    Hi,
The prerequisite required for DPM 2012 SP1 that must be installed is a re-rerelease of UR3 which is 4.1.3317.0 - please download and install the update specified.

  • Secondary DPM 2012 server throws Datasource enumeration details error when trying to open Primary DPM server

I have just installed 2 fresh servers.
    DPM1
    DPM2
DPM1 is online and working great but when I setup DPM2 I installed the agent to DPM1 so that I could have a secondary server to backup all of DPM1 information. When creating the protection group I double clicked on DPM1 and received this.
Any help would really be appreciated.

    Hi
Why dont you backup DPM sql database to a share then backup the share with DPM2?

  • DPM Secondary Server Failure

    Hello,
We've had an issue with our secondary DPM server where a planned update to SCDPM (from 2012 to 2012R2) caused some of the protected clients to not successfully create replicas. At this point I decided to restore the database which seemed like a good idea
at the time as the backups were working, right up until they stopped working.
After restoring the database, none of the issues were solved and I had gained a new problem -- I could no longer edit the protection groups on the secondary server at all.
At this point I was stuck. I couldn't get the backups to run, and I couldn't edit anything on the server to make it work. I was left with one option as far as I or Google could see -- Blow the Secondary server away and start from scratch. The secondary is
only used as a DR option, so this wasn't a big deal. I removed the agent from the Primary server, uninstalled DPM from the Secondary and deleted the database. I then installed DPM2012 R2 fresh, installed the agent on the Primary from the Secondary and created
    a new protection group.
And herein lies the problem: I cannot see the node for "Protected Servers" listed underneath the Primary server.
Now, I know there can be all sorts of drama's related to moving protected servers around in a Primary-Secondary scenario as DPM databases tend to hold onto information. However everything I've read so far would indicate that the issue would lie on the DB
of the Secondary server, which I've completely blown away and as such shouldn't be a problem.
I have noticed that the Primary server maintains the Server ID of the Secondary server, even after it was uninstalled and removed from the environment, under the tbl_AM_Server table of it's database. I'd have thought that this should be removed upon removing
the agent from the server, however it is still there. Can I manually delete this row from the database, and reinstall the agent to try and force it onto a new (and potentially correct) ID?
I've also noticed that when I install the agent onto the Primary (from the Secondary), the DPMServerID of the Primary server, as listed in the database on the Primary, does not change to point to the Secondary -- is this expected behavior?
If I do a dance from within the database and point the DPMServerID field of the two servers to each other, I can then expand the node from within the Secondary and the Primary will list the "Protected Servers" node, showing the Secondary Server. Obviously
that's not what I want, as I don't want to back the Secondary up to itself, but it does show that the group can be displayed, and may be related to the Primary not believing that it has any protected servers to back up. Is there a table or a field in the DB
that lists secondary servers for protection points, or any other reason why the Primary would believe that there are no valid servers for the Secondary to look after?
Now, i thought maybe I'm missing some files or folders, so I've verified the folder and service permissions as being correct. The MTATEMP$\PSInfo folder was missing from the Primary server, so I recreated it copying the settings from the Secondary. Still
    no change in behavior.
I also get an enumeration error on a share when the Secondary expands to the Primary from within the protection group. Not sure if this is related? It's been happening from before the server died, so I'm thinking not.
Any suggestions on what I can look at would be greatly appreciated. It's pretty awful that we have a product that allows itself to get into this position. I know what we have done isn't exactly a "Supported Scenario", but I wouldn't have expected
    this much trouble.
    Thanks,
    Nick.

    Microsoft found the issue.
DPM 2012 R2 – No “Protected Servers” listed on secondary DPM server
Issue was caused by a ##temporarytable left behind from the old DPM server in the stored procedure dbo.prc_AM_PCInfor_TempProtectedServersList_Finalize. Both the _Create and _Insert were correct. Microsoft replaced the incorrect temporary table name for
    the correct one.
    dbo.prc_AM_PCInfor_TempProtectedServersList_Create
    dbo.prc_AM_PCInfor_TempProtectedServersList_Finalize
    dbo.prc_AM_PCInfor_TempProtectedServersList_Insert
How to find the correct table name
Event Log – Application. The following event log on the Primary DPM server showed the error and contained the incorrect SQL table name “Invalid object name '##62007ceb_6949_4a55_837e_4d8bf93c5973tmp_tbl_ProtectedPS'.”
You can then look at the stored procedure dbo.prc_AM_PCInfor_TempProtectedServersList_Create for the correct SQL temporary table name.
Replace the incorrect SQL temporary table name in stored procedure dbo.prc_AM_PCInfor_TempProtectedServersList_Finalize with the correct one.

  • DPM 2012 Primary SP1 and Secondary R2 mixed mode

I have a Primary and Secondary DPM 2012 SP1 configuration.  The DPM servers protect each other's DPM database in a Cyclic protection.  The Primary DPM server is backing up a few servers that are running Windows Server 2003.  I want to
upgrade the DPM servers to 2012 R2, but I just found out that DPM 2012 R2 does not support protecting Windows Server 2003 until DPM 2012 Update Rollup 2 is released.
My question is, can I upgrade my secondary DPM server to 2012 R2 and continue to protect the DPM 2012 SP1 server and all of its protected volumes?  Whenever DPM 2012 R2 UR2 is released I would then upgrade the primary DPM server to 2012 R2 as well and
patch both primary and secondary with UR2.
Please advise if this is a supported plan for my upgrade to DPM 2012 R2.

    Hi,
Not currently, I have asked that a note be added to the following two pages stating that the DPM Server versions must be the same.

  • How to backup Hyper-V host server on DPM 2012 R2

    Hi,
I'm about to backup my first Hyper-V host server using DPM 2012.  I'm looking for a strategy to back up both the host server and virtual machines.  Note:  I'm not really interested in backing up all the virtual machines.  Many are non-production
or for testing.  How do you do it?  I was thinking about selecting in the protection group:
    - BMR and SS for the Hyper-V host
    - The C: volume of the Hyper-V host
    - Select the Child partition snapshots of the virtual machines I want to backup.
In my environment, Hyper-V role is installed on the C: drive, but the virtual machines are stored on E:, which I would not backup directly (volumes) since I'm backing up the VMs using Child partition snapshot.
Would I be able to restore my Hyper-V host and the selected VMs with a backup like this?
Anyone want to share how they setup their protection groups for Hyper-V?
    Thanks.

No, use full server backup (image) if VM config are stored at default storage (disk  C).
Understanding where your virtual machine files are [Hyper-V]
Using this method to perform a full server backup is the recommended method because it captures more data than the other method.

  • DPM 2012 R2 Rollup 4, Update Rollup 7 for Exchange Server 2010 SP3 backups with eseutil check fail

    Hi,
It could be a coincidence, but ever since installing Update rollup 4 onto DPM 2012 R2, (which was at UR3 I believe) I haven't been able to complete an Exchange express full backup or consistency check with verification using Eseutil checked. If I have the
eseutil check enabled I get the following error:
    Type: Consistency check
    Status: Failed
Description: Data consistency verification check failed for LOGS of Exchange Mailbox Database Mailbox Database 2011112513 on SERVER.xxx. (ID 30146 Details: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process (0x80070020))
Disabling the eseutil verification allows it to succeed, but I'm not happy to continue with that for too long.
I've had this running for many years and this is the first real issue with exchange, its a single stand alone exchange database.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Andreas

    Andreas,
the error is stating that something else has a handle to a file or files during the ESEUtil check.  Typically this is AV.  I have also seen where the Exchange limits are exceeded and that causes the issue.
Please ensure you have the DPM AV exclusions for the DPM server and I would advise the DPMRA.exe on the PS.  You can also trying disabling or removing AV as a test.
    DPM AV exclusions -

You may also want to test using eseutil against the logs outside DPM and see if that fails with similar issue.  Let us know.  Thanks

  • Upgrading DPM 2012 SP1 to DPM 2012 R2 fails (DPM Setup is unable to connect to the specific instance of SQL Server Reporting Service (ID: 33431)

    The Background:
    1.  DPM 2012 SP1 was originally installed on a server with local SQL 2008 R2 instance (SQL was installed as part of DPM)
    2.  SQL database was upgraded to SQL 2012 SP1

This absolutely fixed my issue.  I had upgraded my version of SQL and was then trying to upgrade DPM 2012 to 2012R2 and I could not figure out where the installation was querying old version of the reporting services.

  • Service Manager 2012R2 - Hotfix for Service Manager 2012 SP1 secondary Management server

Can the hotfix for the issue described here -
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/servicemanager/archive/2013/04/22/service-manager-2012-sp1-secondary-management-server-cannot-set-availability-on-a-health-service-that-doesn-t-exist.aspx
, be applied to a 2012R2 Service Manager environment?
My dilemma; In a Service Manager 2012 SP1 environment, I installed a secondary mgmt server, promoted it, then upgraded to R2. This R2 Primary mgmt server has the error described in the TechNet blog.
The reason this was done, the original primary mgmt server (2012 SP1) resided on the same server as the Portal. This original primary is still at 2012 SP1 with the System Center services disabled.
Again, can the hotfix for Service Manager 2012 SP1 secondary mgmt servers be applied to a Primary mgmt server (or environment, however the hotfix is run) server Service Manager 2012 R2?
    Thank you,

    Hi,
Hmm, you should probably log a case for this, but my first thought here would be to install a new SCSM 2012 R2 server and promote that one to the new Primary server, then remove the old ones.

  • Secondary DPM (2012 R2) Issues: synchronising too much data from Primary DPM, persistant consistancy checks, and no dedup support!

I have a Primary DPM server that is protecting various File servers and a Exchange DAG. Everything is working as it should on this server, but I am experiencing constant issues on the secondary DPM protecting these same data sources.
On the primary, two Protection Groups in particular are set up to protect two different volumes on the same file server. Volume D:\ is 46TB in size, with a deduplicated file size of 22TB (actual 39TB) whilst Volume E:\ is 25 TB in size, with a deduplicated
file size of 2.5TB (actual 5.5TB).
    Issue 1:
As expected Volume D: was initially replicated to the secondary DPM server at its undeduplicated size ( 39TB), as was Volume E:\ with initial replication to the secondary of 5.5 TB.  So when is Microsoft going to support dedup on a secondary DPM ? It
seems daft to support dedup on the Primary DPM which is always more likely to be close to the original datasources on the  LAN and not on the secondary DPM which is most likely to be placed offsite on a WAN !
    Issue 2:
I have a big issue with the subsequent Synchronizations on the secondary server for E: which seems to transfer almost the full 5.5 TB every day ( I have it set to sync every 24hrs) - although the data is fairly static (i.e.unchanging) on that volume. On
one occasion a Sync continued for over 48 hours for this volume and had transferred over 20GB (according to the DPM console) , until I manually cancelled the job - how is that possible on a volume with only 5.5 TB (UN-deduplicated) ?? What is going on here
    - has anyone any ideas?
    Issue 3:
Another File server I am protecting on both the Primary & Secondary DPM server - always fails over to a consistency check on the secondary server - usually due to the fact it cannot access a particular file which results in an inconsistent replica .
However the Sync (and subsequent restore point) on the primary DPM server from the original datasource is always completes without any issues. Again, has anyone any clues ?
I do get the impression that the whole Secondary DPM thing is not quite robust enough. I can only assume that as the Primary seems to protect the original datasources ok, that the issue is with the secondary reading the information on the primary DPM.

I tried changing the time of the synchronization, but that didn't help.
Meanwhile, I was working on another unrelated case with Microsoft and so I didn't want to have a second case open at the same time. So I waited for some weeks with no change on this problem. Then, about a day or two before I was finally going to call Microsoft
to open a case (months after the problem had started), the problem suddenly resolved itself, with no input from me! So I don't really know if it was time that fixed it eventually or what. Sorry I can't be of more help.
