Drive encryption software

We have a Windows server 2008 r2 domain and running 500 windows 7 machines. We are looking into a new drive encryption software. We currently use Novell ZenWorks Full Disk Encryption. We have had several issues with this IE blue screens when installing
the agent.
I would like to know of some other reputable options for disk encryption. It need to be centrally managed and 256 bit encryption.
Thanks
Josefah

I am sure that is not a surprising answer, have you thought about Bitlocker http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/features/bitlocker
- you need Win 7 Ultimate or Enterprise
- works great with TPM (without TPM look in Win 8)
- manage it with in AD (with an Enterprise Agreement you can do MBAM)
- add some scripts (WMI) for reporting
- configure GPOs so that all recovery keys are stored centrally and make seperate backups of all recovery info in AD just in case the machine account gets deleted and recreated and you need after 2years the recovery key
My experience with 3rd parties are not good either, regardless who it was.
Hope that helps,
Lutz

  • •Best External Drive Encryption Software????

    Hi,
I need to find a good external firewire drive encryption software, any recommendations? I have gigs of legal files that must be encrypted but with a VERY stable program.
    Thanks,

Disk Utility makes AES-256 images which can be put on external hard drives. Of course the power of encryption also depends on the quality of your password. If you use anything that might be found in any language in the password, that won't work. Mixing numbers and letters without vowels is the best way to construct passwords. Mixing cases helps too.

  • HP Drive Encryption Software (Winmagic)

Hi, I'm having a problem with the HP Drive Encryption Software. I had to reinstall my operating system, but I forgot the decrypt my hard drive before the reinstall. My HDD was split into 3 partitions, 1 was for the OS and the other 2 for data storage. Currently, after the reinstall, I can see the one with the OS, as it was formated during the reinstall, but as for the other 2, they are not available. Windows recognized those partitions as not formatted and when I click on them the OS says that before using the partition it needs to be formated. I was hoping that by installing the Drive Encryption Software it will be easy to recover those partitions, but apparently it wasn't. I have my old spare key stored on a external USB device, but when I was trying to recover following the guidelines I found in the Help section of the HP Client Security app (via the login screen after a restart) I run into an error. 0xa1 I believe. Is there any way to recover those partitions? I wouldnt want to format them and loose all my data. Pls advise. Thank you

  • HP Drive Encryption Software

I am helping a friend setup their new laptop, but cannot find any information on what's needed to setup the Drive and Email Encryption software, only the basic information on the "product info" sheet I saw when they decided to buy this model.
Is there a manual for HP ProtectTools, so i can really familiarise myself with all of the various features - including fingerprint recognition and the protection of USB memory keys (which I've already had to work out how to turn off because it was interfering with their use of drives too much.
If I could read the guide, perhaps I could understand how to configure the protection to work the way they'd like it. If you can help me find this, I'd be very grateful.

  • Bit Locker Drive Encryption of Windows Vista

Have just downloaded the Bios Upgrade version 2.2 (QG40 BIOS_W220.exe), but I inadvertently omitted to turn the 'Bit Locker Drive Encryption of Windows Vista' off first, as Toshiba had advised.
Is there any corrections I can make to rectify this omission and ensure the G40 and the software operate correctly?

Thanks for your prompt reply Jeka-Nn. But I have several further questions before going too far with the suggestions as I am not familiar with software modifications.
    1. What am I actually trying to do overall by downloading and using the suggested application.? Can you give me some overall picture of what I am trying to do?
    2. Does this fix the problem without me having to make choices--is it self sufficient/self-installing?
    3. Will it return the system to its correct operational settings before I downloaded the Bios upgrade?
    4. I have downloaded the application suggested, but when I try to open the file it sends up a message that reads:
Error; this installer does not contain any compressed files. To create a self extracting installation package (with embedded files) run:
    "TrueCrypt Setup.exe" /p
When I press OK, it simply reverts to the downloaded list which has the TrueCrypt v7.0 included, but nothing else happens.
What do I need to do to fully install the application?
    5. Are there any other steps /inclusions that I need to make to fully correct my 'stupidity'?
Sorry about all these questions but you can see I am a raw beginner at this work.
    With thanks, rons

This drive encryption is a nightmare and it seems I am stuck with it??? Surely there must be away to get rid of this nuisance? Most likely the encryption doesn't match the drive specs so you would get a error. And what did you use to encypt the drive? And why did you encrypt the drive for? You need to redo the image again from the old drive but with the encryption removed so you can make another ghost image and then restore that image again to see if the problem goes away.

  • Need 256 Bit AES Full Disk Encryption for a Mac.  The other discussions regarding this issue are very old.  Does anyone have any current advice regarding encryption software?

Does anyone have any advice regarding 256 bit full disk encryption software for Macs?  The other discussions on the topic are years old, so I would like some current input.  Thanks for your help in advance.

Depending on your Mac, you might not want to upgrade to OS X 10.7 or 10.8 as it will not run the PowerPC based software your currently using costing a bundle to replace it all, also they will slow down your machine if it's not a more recent issue. You don't want to upgrade OS X without AppleCare defending your possibly bricked logicboard that's for sure.
Filevault encrypts the boot drive, however in doing so makes it near impossible to fix if you have a software issue and need to recover files directly or by using specialty software. Also it robs the machine of performance even more than the Lions do. So you will really need a SSD to work best with 10.7/10.8 and Filevault, then it has to be freshly installed. Filevault needs 50% free space on the boot drive, then it's going to write to the slower 50% half of the hard drive where performance is terrible compared to the first 50%.
Also Filevault is cracked under certain conditions, and if someone gets their hands on the machine (like the law) and knows what they are doing.
If you take your Filevaulted machine to Apple to fix, they are going to require the password to fix the machine obviously.
Software based encryption is vulnerable, you might want to instead place your sensitive data on external self-encrypting hardware that doesn't rely upon software or computer hacks/bypasses (ike freezing the RAM) to get to it.
    http://www.datalocker.com/products/datalocker-dl3.html
Iron Keys for portable USB self encryption, both work with any computer, so your not locked into one platform.
With the senstive data off the computer and on a external device, there is the option of removing, hiding and securing the device. If used with a computer that's never connected to the Internet, it's safe from snoopers, except from a survelliance van parked outside your door.

  • Critical BitLocker Drive Encryption system files are not available

    Hi all,
We are running into some issues when attempting to configure BitLocker Drive Encryption through the BitLocker UI on Windows Server 2008SP2.
On running the BitLocker configuration screen we are presented with a message stating that
‘Your system volume is not configured correctly to allow you to use BitLocker Drive Encryption.
Critical BitLocker Drive Encryption system files are not available’
We believe this issue may have been caused during a recent hardware migration using the DoubleTake Move software as we encountered a similar issue with the Windows Backup utility not seeing any available HDDs.
Has anyone else encountered a similar issue and aware of any potential fix?

I think it should be supported on Windows Server 2008 as it is supported on Windows Vista.
Can you check whether BdeHdCfg.exe is present in System32 folder. If not can you copy the BdeHdCfg.exe installer from higher version of OS and copy it to the system32 folder on Windows Server 2008 and then run the command with the administrative rights.
NOTE : Make sure to change the directory to %SystemDrive%\Windows\System32
    Before running the command.

  • How do I uninstall Credant encryption software?

I have Credant encryption software on my MacBook Pro OS X 10.7 and new iMac 27 inch OS X 10.8, and would like to uninstall credant. It appears as a plug-in in System Preferences. Can anyone help with this? Thank you.

I have searched for the Credant app or an uninstaller on my hard drive, but have found nothing. This is as you might expect - the software is intended to prevent someone from de-encrypting the hard-drive or removing Credant. I have asked my IT folks to de-encrypt the hard drive and remove Credant, but they do not appear to be knowledgable about this - surprising, since they originally required installation of Credant on my computer.
I was hoping someone on this forum might have some experience with this. Otherwise, I will push IT to solve this problem. They or I may need to go to Credant for assistance.
    Thanks.

  • Premier and Company Encryption Software

    Hi, all.
I have attached to my work computer an external 320GB hard drive which I use for capturing and storing digital video.  The drive has never been removed and is not intended to be used as portable media.
My company has recently installed software on all of our computers that requires any data sent to removable media to be encrypted in a way that can only be read by computers with this same software installed.  This is to protect sensitive client information, which is completely reasonable and understandable.  Unfortunately, since this new encryption software was installed, I have been unable to create new folders on this hard drive and Premier will not allow it to be designated as a scratch disc, telling me that I do not have access permissions. I also cannot save any projects opened from this disc back onto it.
If I unplug the drive and reattach it, I am prompted by the encryption software "wizard" to convert the drive into encrypted format. I am hesitant to do this, since I don't understand how it will affect the files currently on the drive or how the drive's performance will be affected afterward.  I also fear that the encryption process might hinder the ability of my software to read from and write to it on the fly. The issue may be complicated further if the encryption process slows down the transfer rate, but that remains to be seen.
I have sent a ticket to the IT department to let them know of my concerns, but I wanted to get some input from other Adobe users before I have them do anything irreversible.  Based on your experience, does anyone think Premier and After Effects will go batty if the video data has to be encrypted and unencrypted as it goes to and from the hard disc?  Anyone else working in a secure environment who could share their experience with this kind of thing?  The IT department doesn't know anything about video and I can't rely on them to know how this will affect my rig.  Any insight or advice to share before they come a-knockin'?
Thanks in advance for any assistance!

The simple fact that the drive "is" removable, whether you use it that way or not, is going to be problematic.
I would highly suggest you "social engineer" the following with the IT dep't:
Have them install an internal media drive (or 4 - see various configuration recommendation threads on this forum) without encryption software. If you are not working with client's excel spreadsheets or word documents, just video that will eventually be distributed in some format anyway, (e.g., it will have a presence outside the network computers even if it is still internal), then you can make a better case for being opted out of the encryption requirement.
As a compromise, ask them to make the NLE computer's USB ports inactive except for printing. This will help satisfy the security requirements they are trying to implement. Remember, it is probably not their idea to do all this. Whatever you can do to make it difficult or impossible for data to be removed from this computer will increase your chances of making a compelling argument against encryption.
Make the IT department responsible for creating a backup of all your unencrypted media before anything else - even if they have to uninstall the encryption software, make the backup and then reinstall it. Keep this backup separate and unencrypted until the dust has settled.
If they absolutely refuse to let you be exempted, find the video "wannabe" in the IT department and involve him in the process of making the NLE software work with the encryption software. Perhaps when he gives up you'll finally be able to do without. Or, maybe, it will be working properly.
Either way, sit back and wait for the howls of dismay when suddenly some critical files in another department are no longer accessible because of a conflict between the encryption and the some security update.

  • Drive encrypted but on network. Need to worry?

Hi. I have a time machine drive encrypted with a really good password. I use that drive to backup my computer. Recently I have attached this drive to another Mac which hosts my website and acts as a server for music as well. I like it like this because I can just connect to my network and backup my computer without having to actually attach my Time Machine disk to my main computer. My server Mac is also accessible over the Internet through Apple remote desktop, or VNC.
It just recently occurred to me that if I can see my server  desktop from anywhere in the world I also see my time machine backup drive mounted on its desktop and I can freely access all content of that drive from anywhere in the world. It seems to me that this would compromise security and that the encryption of my time machine drive does not matter at all because it is mounted on my server desktop.
Can anyone suggest if there is a way for me to have that drive mounted on my server desktop, have the server be reachable through filesharing and Apple remote desktop over the Internet and yet have the contents of my time machine drive be as secure as if a burglar steals my encrypted drive?
thank you very much for your suggestions

The normally way for a local time machine backup drive to be used and encrypted is for the entire backup drive to by encrypted. The normal way for a Mac server to provide Time Machine backup access to other Macs is that the other Macs create a disk image on the Time Machine drive being shared by the server. These disk images can be and normally are encrypted.
This second approach means that as far as the server is concerned it only sees the disk image files and not the contents inside them. There is no need for the server to know or store the password to access such encrypted disk images files. Therefore with this approach the contents would be secure even if someone gained remote access to the server.
It sounds like you are using a disk originally setup for local access and at best are mounting it on the server by entering the full disk encryption password. This means that it is completely unprotected while it is mounted on the server.
You should consider wiping the drive and setting up proper network backups which will then create disk images and let you set encryption for the disk images.
PS. You might want to disable VNC access over the Internet and only make this possible via a VPN connection. You could use the VPN server function in the same server software. It is generally best practice to only make available via the Internet those protocols absolutely needed, e.g. Web for web serving, and email for a mail server. Everything else e.g. file sharing, VNC, etc. should be limited to being only accessible via a VPN connection.

  • Credant encryption Software slowing down premiere

    Hi,
My company recently installed Credent encryption software on my laptop. It is slowing down all my Adobe programs. It has made my DVD drive undetectable. I tried installing CC from the cloud and all it does is crash. Anyone else know anything about Credant?

I've not heard of it before.  Your best bet is probably to remove it.

  • HP Drive Encryption Error: Unable to unlock media.

Hi I looked around to see if anyone else is stuck with the same issue I am in but I haven't been so lucky. I was finally able to login into my HP Client Security since awhile and while looking around I clicked to have my hard drive encrypted not putting a lot of thought into it. My laptop rebooted due to Norton while I was at work. When I came back and tried to login via the HP Drive Encryption like I would usually do it would not let me instead a message appeared that it was "unable to unlock media. To try again when it would re-start" I thought okay I would try again. However no matter how many times I try to login the same message would come out. I really don't know what to do and I am afraid I will have to do an HP recovery if I don't find a solution.

Bumping this post.  I have the same exact problem.  I checked box to encrypt hard drive.  Now upon booting back up, I get that I am "unable to access media".  I can't use my established password and my 3 question sparekey doesn't work either.  I really don't want to start from scratch again for something that wasn't my fault.  Don't put the software on if it isn't going to work properly.

  • Cannot decrypt HP Drive Encryption

Greetings, I own the computer detailed above, and it's protected by (my own finger's) fingerprint protection, courtesy of HP Client Security. The PC has run into a couple of problems (corruped fan, BSoD's etc), so I contacted HP in my local area for support. Their tech and I ran into a funny problem; he cannot access the system, the BIOS, or anything without my fingerprint. So now, I'm trying to disable HP Drive Encryption - but I can't.When I enter HP Client Security Manager, and go to HP Drive Encryption section, my C (and only) drive is ticked and says "Encrypted". The type of encryption appears to be "Software". When I untick it, nothing happens, and a "Next" button WILL NOT appear. Then, when I tick it again, a "Next" button will appear, even though the drive is already encrypted. Pressing "Next" in that situation basically prompts me to back up that secure emergency key file and encrypt my already encrypted drive all over again. It won't let me decrypt. I cannot even Refresh (reinstall Windows 8.1 while keeping personal files intact) or factory reset from the startup settings while Drive Encryption is on. My computer is running HP Client Security Manager 8.2.0.1663. I thought the problem might be that the version is outdated. So I opened HP Support Assistant and searched for updates. It claimed there aren't any. Just in case, HP Client Security claims that version of HP Drive Encryption is powered by Winmagic. But it's not something I've deliberately installed, it says "HP" all over the place. Please help me before I finally throw this useless brick out the window. Regards,

Same problem. Still no answer.  Unticking the decrypted drive but then no way to save that change or apply that change or go to next steps. Can only exit that page saying that it won't save the changes.  So no way to decrypt drive to install Windows 10 and uninstall this horrible HP Client security nonsense program.  Hey HP. Post an answer here. how hard would that be?  Or do you really think it is more efficient for us to call your stupid support line and take the time (one by one for each of us) to talk to a support rep?  I think the easiest solution is to just buy a Lenovo and junk this nonsense HP client security. Lenovo had so much better hardware management that I never needed support --- ever. It just worked.  If HP doesn't post a response. I'll never buy an HP again.
