  • Repairing permissions before and after updating software

What is the reason to repair permissions before and after updating software? This may sound like a stupid question to many of you, but I am new to computers and I am trying to learn how and why of some of the things of my PowerBook. I installed some updates without repairing permissions. Did I install some software updates the wrong way? Thank you.

This is a topic which will draw as many emphatic for and against responses as overnight shut down or not, defrag or not, optimise or not, and so on.
I agree with Neil. I believe that OS X has progressed sufficiently that repair permissions has become redundant and so I do not do it on any regular basis.
Some folk may refer you to an Apple Support Article 303602. That Article in its 4 May 2006 version, titled "Top 10 Tips to Keep Your Mac in Top Form" suggested Repair Permissions should be done "after upgrading or installing new software". The Article was however revised on 15 May 2006 to be titled "Top Tips to Keep Your Mac in Top Form" and the item on Repair Permissions [along with two other recommended maintenance tips] was removed. It is my view that the conclusion to be drawn here is that Apple no longer considers Repair Permissions to be a required maintenance procedure.
Many users have adopted a "Repair Permissions" mantra for a cure-all over several years. I dropped it sometime in 10.3.
    But, to each his own.

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get aCode 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Apple Software Updateentries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Next, select any Bonjour entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install using an iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe) downloaded from the Apple Website:

  • No Update available of IPhoto via apple- update software

I currently have Iphoto 9.1.4  and Lion 10.7.5. I like to update IPhoto to the newest version that also supports ICloud. Via the regular Apple->update software no updates are found however (while newest version is 9.3.2). I downloaded version 9.3.2 from support site but it refuses to install, and claims i should use the regular upgrade via apple--> update software.  I have a regular mac-air 13 inch baought with all sw pre-installed.
Does someone has simular issue and found a solution ?

my phone is full and cannot update software. What to do? What software can I get rid of? Can I delete Contacts I only use on my computer?

When you update over the air, the file is downloaded, then expanded on your phone...you need free space to do that. When you update using iTunes, the file is downloaded/expanded on your computer, then applied to your phone. That's the difference.
Either start deleting stuff...or update on your computer.

  • Problem with iTunes and/or updater software??

I just bought a brand new 30gig iPod video. I followed apple's "instructions" and installed iTunes and the iPod software off of the included cd. I then connected my iPod and it charged but itunes never recognized it. Windows can find it (it appears as an external disk drive in my computer and iPod in other places) but iTunes doesn't recognize it at all. I have tried resetting the iPod, uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes/ipod software using the install cd, i have tried downloading the latest software from apples website and installing it that way, I have tried everything but restoring the ipod because the updater software won't even work. every time I try to use it, it just says "Service Error". I really have no idea what to do. The iPod seems to work fine, it turns on, turns off, windows seems to recognize it, but iTunes won't recognize the iPod and the iPod updater software doesn't seem to work at all. The last thing I am going to try is wiping my computer harddrive (it needs it for other reasons, not just this iPod problem) and starting completely fresh with nothing or very little installed besides iTunes and the iPod software.

The article posted in the first response is a great place to start. If that doesn't work, try these out as well:

  • Apple Update software clobbers reinstall of iTunes

    Hi all,
I am having an issue the has escalated over the last day or so with iTunes. I attempted the upgrade to 7.3 and began to encounter an error in which the Apple Software Update screen would open in iTunes and I would get the Visual C++ Runtime error that has been mentioned in other threads. There were no updates showing in the Update window, but as soon as I closed it, iTunes would not respond and I would have to close the application.
I am now at the point where I have completely uninstalled iTunes and Quicktime to see if that has any effect on the situation. I now get an error message that states "The older version of the Apple Software Update cannot be removed. Please contact your technical support group." Seeing as how I am the technical support group, I am now turning to more wizened advisers for some help on this matter. I have tried renaming the "Softwareupdate.exe" file as well as the file folder "Apple Software Update" to no avail so I am at a complete loss as to what to do next.
      Windows XP Pro

This seems to a a problem with the Apple Updater program. If you rename file C:\Program Files\Apple Software Update\SoftwareUpdate.exe to say C:\Program Files\Apple Software Update\__SoftwareUpdate.exe or any thing else the problem seems to go away. Then after iTunes has started you can close iTunes, and return the file to its original name and everything works fine.

  • Apple update software for windows 7 X64 ultimate

so apple support update pops up and says "HEY! YOU HAVE UPDATES!"  for quicktime and itunes.. problem is when i tell it to update the window just flickers.. it will not update, nor will it let me manually update quicktime.. i previously fixed itunes as it also had an issue letting me manually add/remove itunes.. i barely got that fixed.. but i can now manually update itunes.. however i need help locating all the files for apple support update software so that i can re-install it, and perhaps the same information for quicktime, as again i cannot manually install or remove quicktime period right now..
nothing shows up in ccleaner, pc clean up or even when i run sfc /scannow in cmd..
i'm so tired of dealing with these problems.. some help would be awesome.. thank you.

  • IPhoto 11 and Apple Update

I was saddened today, that after almost five years of using Apple Update rather than installing from a .dmg, that the squence did'nt install the update to iPhoto correctly and now crashes on a continuing basis on my 07 MacBook Pro.
Would it be worth my time to download the .dmg and try to install it once again and see if that might cure what ever file did'nt get written correctly during the installation or would it be better to just go back to a old Time Machine back up and try to install the old version and hopefully wite over what ever might have been installed with the Apple Update.
Apple has at least 20 reports of the crash on file as of this writing.
    Your thoughts would be appreciated.

  • Hard Drive died and Apple replaced. Please help me reinstall.

My hard drive failed in my G5, and it was replaced by Apple under the Protection Plan. I was running 10.4.4 at the time, but Apple has installed 10.3 on the new disk. I just picked up my G5 from the Apple store and need some help.
I have a cloned backup that's (unfortunately) a year old on an external drive. I was doing nightly backups of my mail, safari settings and a folder to the same external drive with Backup using incremental backups. So the year old clone doesn't have all the files that have been updated since it was made.
I'm confused about how to get back up and running. Do I update the OS on the new drive first by reinstalling Tiger, updating to 10.4.7 and then start dragging things from the clone? Or should I copy my user folder from the clone and then drag newer files in? Or should I just clone the clone back to the new drive?
I rreally need to get up and running so I can begin to recreate the year's worth of illustrator files that I lost ...I've learned a BIG lesson here and will put into place a proper backup system as soon as possible.
I sure would appreciate any help.

    PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   PowerBook G4 12"

Install Tiger and then download and run the updaters to get you all back to 10.4.7, etc. From here, I'd drag user data from the outdated clone to the new drive. Be careful about copying the library folder. You probably don't want to overwrite anything that's already there - you'll be replacing a newer file with an older one. But I'd go ahead and copy the contentsof each folder inside the personal drive of the cloned to the new one. By that, I mean, don't copy the Documents folder - copy the contents of the documents folder to the new documents folder.
Since your clone is really outdated you may be better off installing your applications rather than copying them - especially since some aren't likely to appreciate being copied. At least having already copied your preferences, many of the programs will already be serialized.

  • WRT54G2 setup and using Linksys software

After installing the router and Linksys software (which had it's problems) I attempted to enter the setup using my browser and the address given in the instruction manual which I had downloaded from your site. This was 192.168.1.1. Although typing in this number produced the login pop up, when I typed in the default password, admim, I could not get into the setup pages. However if I used the gateway - advanced settings in the Linksys software I could get into the setup. I took me some time to spot that the address, when using the Linksys software was not 192.168.1.1 but 192.168.0.1. Is the published address in the manual wrong or is the installation routine incorrectly changing it.
Also when using the Linksys Advisor software selecting various options results in the error "Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation" - WHAT! If I don't quickly close the error box and close the option my computer starts to do all sorts of strange things and I have to switch it off as it wont shut down. Because of this I have had to uninstall the Linksys Advisor software.
    Anybody any ideas.

    Hi,
ipconfig shows the gateway as 192.168.0.1
My ISP is Avanti Satellete and I connect to their modem via my LAN socket. The modem is mounted outside and wirelessly transmits to a host station installed at a neighbour's house. Via equipment there it is sent through a satellite dish to Avant's server. I am (and did) supposted to get a 1Mb/s connection but at the moment their system is getting overloaded and they are in the process of updating their equipment to solve the problem. Because the system performance can be iratic it sometimes makes it difficult to know if a problem with the connection is my end or their end!
Where I live ADSL broadband is not available and and even dialup is not good.
The Linksys Advisor appliation works but some of the options (eg: change wireless security, for one) result in the error message "Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation". If I don't cancel the message, and exit the option, the computer starts to do strange things and leaves me no option but to switch off!!
Because of this I have uninstalled it.

  • Dual Hard Drive Setup and Time Machine Backup

Hello All, I am about to start a major upgrade to my iMac and I just need a tiny bit of help.
I will be installing a secondary hard drive, an SSD into the empty space on my 2011 iMac, and upgrading the HDD to a 3tb. I know this is a big job but I did all my homework and I am ready to go.  Here is my plan and my question:
    1. Do the install. Add the 3tb hard drive in place of the 1tb original and install the ssd.
    2. install mountain lion from disc onto the ssd
    3. start up my new awesomly fast computer, and move the home folder to the 3tb drive so that only the applications and osx are on the ssd
    4. use time machine to put all my data back onto my computer.
#4 is where my question is. If I use time machine to restore my data AFTER I have moved my home folder to the 2nd drive, will Time Machine function properly? Will it know that some of the data about the system will need to go on the SSD and some will need to go on the large capacity drive?
This is a very important question, because if it turns out that Time Machine will be confused by this, I will need to just back up my individual files and drop them piecemeal back into my new setup. This would be a huge pain and would make me rebuild all of my system preferences etc.
Has anyone done this before? Any insight would be very much appreciated!

Make life simple. Leave your HDD as it is and clone it to the 3 TB drive. Install the 3 TB drive in your computer and verify it starts up the computer. Next, install Mountain Lion onto your SSD. Put the SSD into the computer. Use Startup Disk preference pane to set the SSD as the permanent boot volume. Boot the computer from the SSD. Setup the SSD admin account with the exact same username and password as on the HDD. Open Users & Groups preference pane, click on the lock icon to authenticate. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the SSD's entry in the users list and select Advanced Options from the context menu. On the right side of the Home dir: field is a Choose button. Click on the button, locate the /Users/username/ folder on the HDD, select it and click on the Open button. Close the Advanced Options window and immediately restart the computer.
You will now boot from the SSD using your Home folder located on the HDD.
Clone Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
         5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new 3TB drive. Source means the old startup drive.
