Driver virus

Hello,
I recently have found I have a problem with my photo's uploading into the organizer and when they are finished uploading all I get is the hour glass symbol and not the image itself.  I thought that I saw somewhere that I may have a virus attached to my Adobe driver's?  I can however open up photo's in Window's.  Is their a fix?  I originally owned Elements 7 and when I discovered this problem I purchased Elements 8 and the problem is still there.

"HDD" is "entry level pseudo-geek" for "hard disk drive".
First, read John R. Ellis's FAQ here;  http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshop-elements-faq.htm#_PSE_7_Welcome  This will tell you how to "hot wire" your way around the PSE 7/8 "welcome" screen. The idea being to see if we can get the organizer or editor to start on its own.
It is possible that in its efforts to "disinfect" a file associated with PSE, the file could have been damaged in the process.  PSE ingrains itself very deeply into the OS (operating system). I believe this is in concert with Windows regarding color management. In other words, PSE always has a process running, with the "system" listed as the proprietor.
I still like my idea of using the system restore to run back the clock to a point where  PSE 7 was working correctly. This is the restore option in Windows itself, NOT via the discs that came with the machine. File path = "All Programs" > "Accessories" > "System Tools" > "Restore". That's XP. If it's not there in Win 7, I guess I'll have to plug my Win 7 box in and check it out there.
Sometimes a "repair" reinstallation of Windows will cure some problems. But, read carefully, if your machine is a store bought, rather than a built computer, restore discs are a last resort. Sometimes the only restore option the discs offer is a wipe and reformat, which would cause the loss of all your data. If a "repair" option is offered only the OS is reinstalled, and everything else is left intact.
So before you dive into this at all, this would be a good time to backup all your photos. My preferred method would be to copy the entire "My Pictures" folder to a separate HHD. In case of a melt down, you can always copy the whole thing back to "C:/". And you also need to hunt down the "catalog file" , and copy that to a different HDD also. It can be pasted back to a fresh installation of PSE, and things could go on like nothing ever happened.
You can go here;  http://www.techspot.com/vb/menu28.html for assistance with malware. You would have to join this forum first though.
Let me know if I've cleared things up a bit, or confused things more.

  • Risk to Mac from Government Thumb Drive Virus?

    I was just informed that my government-issue thumb drive contained "remnants" of the virus which led to the US government to ban/severely limit usage of portable USB drives. I had used the USB device to transfer files/photos between my macbook and my work computer. I do not have an AV program on the macbook. I do not know if my macbook has been infected. Further, I have been informed by the IT folks that commercially-available software cannot detect this malware, and the only govt scanning programs are Windows-only. I have used other USB devices in the macbook. The nature of the malware would not be explained to me. So, is my computer at risk? What steps, if any, do I need to take? Any and all thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. FYI - I keep my firewall on for "essential services only".

    I pick these examples of malware up often: from student computers, department computers, computers in the shops I use (printing) and pretty much anywhere computers with Windows are found. I normally discover that there is such a file on the thumb drive when I put it in the Mac's USB port and Crossover starts up as the malware tries to self-install. I just quit and then delete the .exe files I find.
    Just occasionally of late, while being able to delete the executable part (the dangerous bit), some residual directories have been left and I cannot delete these without Root access (not even sudo works). A technician with a secure Win machine takes these off for me.
    Without Crossover, it is a simple task to look (using a Mac) and delete in 99% of cases but if you tried this with a Win machine, well. . . .

  • Premiere Elements 10 Error on load - "we have detected an incompatible display driver"

    Greetings! I was happily using this software for several weeks without problems when one day for no apparent reason (no new hardware or significant software changes) I now get this error constantly when trying to run the software - "we have detected an incompatible display driver. to get better and faster playback performance, please update your display driver. display driver details : intel - intel bear lake B 1.4.0 - Build 7.15.10.5218"
    I then updated the intel graphics drivers to the latest version but to no avail. I have tried four different driver versions from oldest to newest and still no success. I have un-installed the software, drivers, started from fresh with all imaginable combinations, CCleaner-ed the hard drive, virus scanned, defragmented, updated windows, etc. I am now at a loss for what to do next, beyond insisting for a refund and going to another software company for my video editing needs.
    My machine is a 2Ghz Dual-Core, 4GB RAM, 80GB available HDD space, running windows XP pro SP3, updated everything drivers and OS.
    I find this problem even more confusing given the fact that is was working, then decided not to work any more. Perhaps something updated in the background without my knowledge?
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    PS - I have tried all the things on this list relating to Premiere Elements version 9, but none have helped - http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/875/cpsid_87588.html

    If none of the troubleshooting for the display adaptor (graphics card driver update, BadDrivres.txt etc.) do not work, we have to understand that the display could actually not be supported. By display, I mean the card-driver-driver version combination. So,
    1. It could be a bad card - None of the available drivers work for the application. Here, ditch the card and get a newer one that works.
    2. It could be a bad driver - For e.g. Only DirectX drivers work, OpenGL ones could be pathetic (Many games detect this and if this is bad, I have seen Photoshop struggle with this). Or some display configurations would be badly supported (multiple monitors, some funny resolutions, some of the ports, crossfire etc.). Older drivers/cards/some OEM drivers etc. have these issues in my experience.
    3. It could be a bad driver version - Here upgrade or a downgrade works.
    Because of a Video editor, the (lack of) capabilities of the card is highlighted. Video Playback alone doesn't nearly exercise the capabilities the cards usually have to offer. Editing really does. That is why it matters if the Video Editor actually says that it supports Graphics acceleration (Or GPU acceleration) for any of the workflows.
    What I am saying here is that when we blame the application for any of the issues, we have to be certain that the issues are NOT due to one of the mentioned three causes. I have seen this all too often in the gaming forums, Nero forums (some years back), in PPro forum, and here. If the application menufacturer is really to blame, the mistake would be all too obvious and too many of us would have complained about it. I do not think this is the case with Premiere Elements 10.
    Introspection works.

  • Driver installation help.

    I just got my V570 back, so I was wondering if there were any drivers that I should download from first getting this machine. Not too familiar with drivers but I went and looked up the ones for this machine and there are a bunch. Thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi Fearlessflyer3,
    Is everything working okay now?
    You just got it back.  From where?  Service?  What did they do?  When did you originally get your machine?
    If everything is working okay, don't be too quick to update stuff.  If you go installing a bunch of updates and then something doesn't work right, you're not going to know which ones screwed you up.
    If you do decide to update drivers, set a restore point in Windows so if something gets messed up, you can go back to where it worked.
    Did you burn restore discs yet?  If you didn't, do so, you'll be glad you did later on.  Do a full backup onto external media so you can be secure in the belief that you can get your system back to where it is now in case something bad happens. ie: failed hard drive, virus.

    I got at the end of last year an iMac from my employer to work with.
    Processor 3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo
    4 GB Memory and runs on OS X 10.5.8
    Now it happens more often that I have to go to clients and they want me to be able to work also on airports and hotel room :P
    But I have to less experiance with hardeware to pick the right Laptop.
    I have to run the following programs
    * Apple OS
    * Creative suite 4 (main use)
    * Mac Barcode Label
    * Wacom Tablet driver
    * Virus scaner (mcafee)
    * VMWare Fusion
    * Windows xp
    * Office
    * SAP Database Client
    * VLP Remote connection ( guess its spelled like that. Its the thingy
    i can log in onto our own network)
    * Virus scanner (mcafee)
    Can someone advice me on the right laptop configuration?
    Thanks in advanced!

    Depending upon your budget, either a MacBook or MacBook Pro will work fine. I would suggest a minimum of 4 gigs of RAM though.

  • Jre 1.6u7 install failure

    Continuing install failures for jre 1.6u7 and 1.6u10(rc) on Windows, SP2. I have two users with desktop machines trying to install jre 1.6.07 for oracle discoverer. So 10 installs went ok, but 2 machines won't install/run jre 1.6u7 properly. They previously had installed jre's 1.4 and 1.5, various updates to those. Have uninstalled and installed 1.6 numerous times, but the java control panel will not open. Frequently the installer hangs on "Gathering Required Information". We kill the msiexec.exe, restart machine, add/remove the java, eventually install seems to run. But then, click on Start, control panel, java and nothing happens, control panel will not display. When we try to run our application, IE crashes. Original problem occurred with the install of the JRE 1.6 from the Discoverer server, download/install seemed to hang. Haved tried using the Windows Install Clean Up utility, have unregistered and registered windows installer service, have removed java and manually deleted registry entries for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Javasoft. No obvious messages from the installer, nothing in java_install_reg.log, java_install_sp.log, java_install.log. Errors in Windows Event Viewer for Application for the conflict when we hadn't completed the previous install previously, but the reboot semed to get us past that.
    Any ideas on how I debug this issue, why javacpl.exe won't run?
    Thanks.

    To clarify again, this is a runtime error rather than an install error.
    If this is not obvious to the point of being annoying, I would think that it is your task to try and isolate what it is that makes those two machines different. Are all of your machines supposed to be mirrors of each other? I can understand that your request is driven by hoping for a hint of where to look on those machines for their relevant differences, but it strikes me as unlikely that we can provide a clue here.
    You might want to start by just going to the Control Panels of a machine that works and a machine that does not work and looking for differences in install software. You suggest that they are all at SP2 and I would not expect this sort of problem to be service-pack related.
    Is there a possibility that those two systems are corrupt (failing hard drive, virus, etc)? Is is possible to just clone a working system onto the two misbehaving ones? I realize that my response does not address a Java-specific issue, but you problem does not strike me as being specific to Java.

  • Attachments missing from sent emails

    We just started having a strange email issue today.  Emails sent using POP3 accounts have their attachments stripped out of the email.  If you look at the sent items folder the email has the attachments but the person on the receiving end gets
    an email with no attachment. It doesn't matter how big or small the attachment is, ho many attachments there are or what type of attachment they are.
    This is happening on outlook 2010 and 2013 clients (those are the only 2 versions we have).
    The operating system is Windows 7 pro SP1.  All updates have been applied.
    This is happening on all computers in the domain (SBS2011 server)
    The outlook clients have one profile with an exchange server account and one or more POP3 accounts.
    If I remove the exchange server account or create a new profile with only the pop3 account we do not have this issue.
    I have uninstalled all antivirus software on the computer
    I have created a new profile in outlook
    I have done a system restore to roll back to the OS state before windows updates were installed the night before we started having the issue.
    I have removed the signatures from outlook in case they were corrupted.
    I have uninstalled Exchange server 2010 Rollup version 7 which was installed the night before the issue started.
    I bypassed our local firewall
    I have started outlook in safe mode
    None of this solved the issue.  As stated above exchange rollup 7 was installed and some workstation updates were installed the night before this happened.  I figured that one of those 2 events caused the issue but uninstalling them did not help.
    I need some fresh brain power on this one.
    Thanks in advance

    There are no attachments on the receiving end.
    I enabled protocol logging on the outlook clients and there is no difference in the SMTP log between an email sent successfully and when the attachments get stripped.
    This is happening to all the workstations in the domain.  I have done online and offline (boot from CD and scan all local drives) virus scans and I am confident it is not a virus issue.
    I would love to get rid of POP3 but we still use it because our sales staff have to send email using several different domains and using pop3 allows them to reply to emails and have them sent back out the same account (domain) that they were received from.
    The cause of the issue was either exchange rollup 7 or one of the workstation updates.  Both events happened the night before.  We have been running this configuration for years and those are the only events that changed in our environment.

  • Locked autorun.inf?

    Sometimes I lend my flash drive to Windows users and it comes back guess what: infected. Most flash drive virus put some .exe file in there, along with an autorun.inf, but I can't seem to move this one to trash, Finder says it's "locked". What's that all about? It's pretty anoying not being able to delete a file in my own flash drive, specially if it's a Windows virus.

    An autorun.inf file is not necessarily a virus. There are various ways for handling locked files that you will find at The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on resolving Trash related problems.

  • Warm boot / MUP.sys hang - possible success

    Hi,
    This post is for information and to hopefully save a lot of pain from others suffering my problems.  However, this appears to be partly an XP software / drivers issue, so the causes of my problems may not be the same things as for others who are suffering the same symptoms.  However, I'd appreciate feedback from other people who have had similar problems.
    I've been suffering regularly from warm (and cold) boot hangs - these occur after POST and RAID setup screens, and I either get a black screen or the Windows logo (part transparent).  When choosing safe or debugging mode, the problem always occurs after MUP.sys.  There is a big thread about MUP.sys hangs at Annoyances.com, which identifies a number of possible causes / solutions, many of which appear (to me) to be unlikely.  These include:
    1) Problems with USB2.0 (conflicts or a lack of power) - Remove USB devices and try to boot again
    2) Problems with Power distribution (either a weak power supply or poor power distribution across the board causing instability in either memory, Processor, or USB)  - Solution may be to up core voltage slightly.
    3) The Windows XP setup used an "ACPI Uniprocessor PC" instead of one of the other options - either change the setting or toggle (enable / disable) the ACPI setting on your mobo (Note, articles I have seen do not recommend changing these settings, but it seems that both Hardware and Software need to match ACPI settings (on or off) for it to boot)
    4) Issues with the BIOS - try setting to defaults / adjusing various settings
    5) Software installation / drivers causing conflicts.  - Appears possible, but is certainly not clear-cut.  [Note: My boot issues often get worse after I install something new]
    6) Miscellaneous others (including cluttered drives, virus infestation, etc)
    At one point this evening, I simply left my PC in its "hung" state, and came back to it later.  Eventually (after more than 1/2 hr, I believe) the machine DID boot into Windows, but my SATA RAID array had disappeared from my disk list (I have XP installed on a normal IDE partition, and use a RAID array for programmes & media files).
    It has proved of great help to me to ensure I had the "Bootlog" setting enabled.  This writes a file to ntbtlog.txt in the windows directory, and you can sometimes interrogate this to see where the boot was failing.  Of course, other times XP never gets to write to the file, soit can prove useless.  In my case, the log showed the system apparently failing at the "processor" installation, with good boots usually showing "Loaded driver \SystemRoot\System32\DRIVERS\AmdK8.sys" immediately after MUP.sys, while bad boots showing "Did not load driver ACPI Uniprocessor PC" immediately after MUP.sys.
    This does not provide infallible evidence that it is *that* driver that is the problem, but it may be an indication.
    The issue of missing my SATA RAID disk also made me check those drivers, and I noted that the NVidia 4.24 XP RAID and IDE driver were dated 13/1/04, which was identical to that in my System32/Drivers directory.  However, I then saw that the MSI 5.03 drivers were more recent - the IDE drivers in that distribution are dated 3/6/04.
    This confused me as I had already installed the 5.03 drivers (the install programme initially "hung" on the SW drivers, and I had to run in Safe mode under "Windows 2000 compatibility" in order to make it run).  I was therefore a bit annoyed to find that the IDE drivers had not "taken".
    I therefore browsed to the directory and chose "install" from right-clicking the XXX.inf files.  However, this also made no difference, and my System folders stubbornly maintained the 13/1/04 drivers despite a reboot and another try to install using the main MSI / NVidia install programme.
    In the end, I manually selected each IDE and RAID device from device manager and forced a driver update, pointing the update programme at the MSI driver directory.  This finally caused the driver update (which does appear to have sorted out some of my problems).
    However, I still had some boot failures, and took Creative's advice ( http://dmzweb4.europe.creative.com/htmlhelp/general/acpi.htm ) and downgraded my "ACPI Uniprocessor PC" driver to an "Advanced configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC".  In hindsight I am not certain this was the correct move, as it appears to be a one-way process (without doing a re-install of Windows) and is not recommended by microsoft (see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=309283 ).
    I also considered the possibility of the processor not getting enough juice (should be unlikely with a 33A 12V power supply) and I upped the core voltage to 1.55.
    I have had a boot hang since the voltage was upped, so I'm not convinced of its help.  However, with all 3 "solutions" applied, I have had 4 good boots now. I'm hopeful the problem will at least be helped, if not solved.
    Anyone got any additional helpful thoughts?
    Cheers,
    David

    I am having this exact issue and I have no idea what to do!
    When I restart, (warm boot) I will often hang after POST.
    When I cold boot, I never hang after POST.
    When I get to the windows loading, I get the windows logo, but faded.  (It changes from black to the Windows logo, and it dies somewhere inbetween.)
    About 1 in 5 boots I will work.
    I'm using the latest drivers for everything, and this is a fresh install of XP SP2 onto a RAID 0 array.

  • My computer had a virus and needed to be wiped clean. all my itunes docs are stored on an external hard-drive so i downloaded a new itunes but it over-wrote my old one - how can i restore this without wiping my iphone? please help :(

    Hi there,
    My windows xp computer got a virus and needed to be wiped.
    As i store all of my itunes and iphone stuff on an external hardrive i thought this would not cause a problem.
    Got a bit confused when i tried to open itunes again from the back-up hardrive as it would not open.
    Wrongly assumed that the best option would be to re-download itunes and move my old itunes info across - silly silly thing to do :/
    The new download just over-wrote the old one and after trying a few of the suggestions on here to get my old library back - i still cant work out if its possible as it has been over-written.
    I don't want to plug my iphone4 into my computer as i have heard that this can wipe your phone completely, so before i do anything, does anyone know what is the best thing to do from here? or how i could posibly recover my old library, playlists, apps, podcasts e.t.c
    please please help

    from the file menu, choose add to library and select the folder on the external containing your content, or drag the folder to the automatically add to iTunes folder inside the iTunes folder.
    when iTunes has finished the operation, go back to preferences > advanced and point iTunes media folder location to the external so that future additions to your library are put there. also, re-enable the copy files ... when adding option.

  • Hard Drive Problems or Virus?

    I was working on my four-year-old MacBook Pro with an external keyboard (Logitech), when it suddenly began typing in capital letters. I pushed the CAPS LOCK button, but that didn't fix it. When I used my external mouse (also Logitech) to insert my cursor in some text, it automatically highlighted a block of text.
    I then tried typing with the MacBook Pro's keyboard, and it worked fine. However, my computer is serious scr*wed up. When I reboot it, it opens up a "Safe Boot" screen.
    I can't connect to the Internet because the little WiFi icon that's supposed to appear at the top right is gone. Nor can I connect with my Verizon modem. When I click the Verizon Manager icon, the VAAccess manager window opens, but the button I'm supposed to click to connect to the Internet never becomes active.
    So I'm thoroughly confused. My computer has been acting a little odd for the last few weeks or months. It seems to be a little sluggish. Dreamweaver, especially, frequently freezes up for a long time when I'm working with it.
    On several occasions, my entire computer froze. I couldn't move the cursor, and it didn't respond to any key or combination of keys I pushed on my keyboard. I have no choice but manually turn it off.
    I generally use Opera or Chrome browsers, often with lots of tabs open. I think these are the biggest drains on my computer's memory. I sometimes get some sort of error message on Chrome, which invites me to open a new tab to some resource that's supposed to fix it. The only way to close the error message is to open the new tab, which I then close. I don't know if this might be related to my problem or not.
    Anyway, does anyone have a clue what's going on? Is there a simple test I can do to determine whether the problem is related to the hard drive or a virus?
    Thank you.

    Hi
    +"Anyway, does anyone have a clue what's going on? Is there a simple test I can do to determine whether the problem is related to the hard drive or a virus?"+
    Highly unlikely it would be a virus as Barry says. A simple 'test' could be creating another admin account, logging in with it and seeing if the sluggishness you've noticed in your other account is still there. If things appear to be improved odds are confused/corrupted caches and/or damaged/corrupted preferences or plists are the culprits. Then again this could be an indication of a failing hard drive? As a matter of course you should boot from the Installer DVD that came with your laptop and use Disk Utility to repair the disk and/or Repair privileges and permissions. Although you can repair P/P normally when logged in. There are hundreds of threads on these boards detailing what can be thrown away in terms of caches etc.
    You say you've had the laptop for 4 years? Presumably you've never 'serviced' it in all that time? What constitutes a 'service' varies from person to person. But what I normally do is every 18-24 months is backup (something you should be doing anyway), reformat/reinstall and migrate everything back again. Depending on usage you may want to either shorten or lengthen that period. Then again you could boot from a Drive/Directory Repair Utility such as DiskWarrior. For some people that works equally as well. No need for a reinstall that way.

  • My pc recently caught a virus, which has wiped my hard drive. I had itunes on it and would like to know if my music is stored on my computer or on the net? So if i download itunes onto another computer will i be able to get it or not?

    My PC recently got a virus and wiped the hard drive. I used itunes for my ipod. I would like to know if the music i had on itunes is stored on my computer or on the net? So in other words can i still access my itunes from a different computer?

    Your purchased music is availble for download again at no cost.  If you have iTunes match service, you can download your matched music.

  • HT1711 My computer caught virus,  My songs are listed in my library, but the music files are gone!  I have them on my  separate hard drive but don't know where to put them back on my computer so itunes recognizes them.  Help !

    My computer caught a virus.  My entire drive was wiped clean, however, I had recently done a backup to a portable hard drive.  When I got my computer back from the tech, and logged into my itunes, my library shows all my songs, but NONE of them have a music file associated with it - therefore I cannot play it.  I have located the music files on my external hard drive, confirmed they play, but don't know how to go about getting them from my hard drive to my computer.  Can someone please help me?????

    In iTunes, go to File > Add to Library and select the files/folders you would like to add.
    You can also choose to consolidate library after that to move them off the external.

  • I recently lost my windows laptop due to a virus. I had backed up all files onto a drive(files only). However no itunes playlists. i have all my playlists on my iphone and pics etc however when im trying to sync to my new computer itunes deletes all data

    I recently lost my windows laptop due to a virus. I had backed up all files onto a drive(files only). However no itunes playlists. i have all my playlists on my iphone and pics etc however when im trying to sync to my new computer itunes wants to  deletes all data off of my iphone so i click cancel
    i want to update to iOS 5 and still have itunes be able to copy my playlists from my iphone. for free. why does apple provide a recovery from iphone option?

    If you have a backup, restore the ENTIRE iTunes folder to the computer.  This restores the library and device association files.  If for some reason you chose to only back up the media and not the entire iTunes folder, then the only option is to let iTunes wipe the drive and re-sync.

  • How do I delete a folder that I moved to Trash from my external backup drive when a virus was detected? Trash will not delete the folder.

    I have tried unsuccessfully to remove a folder from Trash. My anti-virus program (Sophos) detected a virus which had to  be manually removed. I tried (unsuccessfully) to find and remove the infected file. I moved the Folder from my external backup drive and placed it in Trash. Now I cannot get Trash to delete the folder. It asks me if I wish to delete "unlocked" or "all" items. Either selection does not delete the folder. I went to change the permissions to "read & write" and unlocked the folder, but it is still there. I tried to "move" the folder from Trash back to the external harddrive but it seems I can only "copy" it and not "move" it. I am afraid that by copying it, I will not have the folder in two locations (Trash & External HD).
    Would appreciate any suggestions and guidance on this. I hope that I have explained the problem clearly!
    Thank you!

    Before deleting it we should know more about this folder and its contents.
    If it is invected and is using other apps, or other apps are still using it, then it cannot be deleted in the normal manner.
    You might contact Sophos and ask them about it.
    If you are using TM or have a backup of your system before the infection occurred, then you can delete the item(s) in Trash, but there is the possiblity of system corruption and the need for a reinstall, if any of these files are necessary for the OS to work properly, even though they are infected.
    Sophos may not have been able to remove the infection from inside a file which is why they suggested manual removal.
    You might consider downloading and running ClamXav first and see if it can't do better than Sophos.
    All that being said, you can always remove the contents of the Trash using the terminal. Usually as administrator, or in some cases as root (su). Unless you are very familiar with the terminal I do not suggest doing this without some study.
