Dsenableroot

Please excuse my ignorance. Which would be the best way to execute a unix command to disable the root account with dsenableroot. I have tried dsenableroot -d running the command as root and get:
username = root
user password:
dsenableroot:: *Failed to disable root user

The way to do this from the command line is to run the following (substituting your information in place of the filler text):
dsenableroot -d -u ADMINUSERNAME -p ADMIN_PASSWORD
This will provide a message back along the lines of "Successfully disabled root user."
As the previous post mentioned, running "man dsenableroot" on the command line will show you more information about this utility.

No I did not cancel the install and I ran it dozens of times.  The solution that was finally successful was to copy the files/folders from the .dmg on the disk to a temporary directory.  I then had to enable the root user which the instructions from Apple for Lion do not work for Lion Server which I have.  I used the
this command from a terminal window: dsenableroot
I then ran the sudo from the temporary directory I copied the .dmg files/folders to: sudo Install.app/Contents/MacOS/Install
This was one of the most frustrating 5 days trying to get this software to load that I've ever had.  The reason I bought a Mac was that I was told Adobe PSE and Photoshop CS runs much better on a Mac and it wasn't running well at all on my nearly 4 year old Lenovo notebook.  I should have learned UNIX commands when I made my employees learn Linux.  I didn't think I'd ever need this knowledge on a Mac but I was wrong.
You obviously didn't look at the error package I loaded which is posted at the beginning of my post "Error Package Support Uploaded: 00-30402-091818122011".
It is not very encouraging that I see other users with the same problem and Adobe has not issue a bulletin in the forums about loading PSE on Lion Server.  The existing stock can't obviously be fixed but putting a prominent message on the forums as was done for the install issues with Premiere Elements 10.  I'm pretty disappointed with Adobe at this point.  I hope I will have a better experience once I get my backlog of .raw photos converted to .jpg which is why I bought Photoshop Elements 10.

  • Root user problem in OS 10.7

Logged in as root user without a hitch at first attempt.
After logging out and disabling root use, the next day I enabled root access again, and tried to log in using the same password.  Not accepted.
I have tried changing the password but nothing I try is accepted.
    Any ideas anyone?

    Try in Terminal:
    dsenableroot -d
    dsenableroot
Why are you logging in as root?

  • Remember to disable root if you had to use the workarounds

Many many people have had to "enable" root to restore admininstration priviledges or reset an account password.
Please remember to "disable" root after you have restored your systems functionality.
Disabling root can be accomplished by using /Applications/Utilities/Directory Utility - Edit Menu
or for the commmand line crowd 'dsenableroot' can be used - see the man page for more details.
Having a running system on the internet with "root" enabled is less secure since "root" is a well known user name.

The way to do this from the command line is to run the following (substituting your information in place of the filler text):
    dsenableroot -d -u ADMINUSERNAME -p ADMIN_PASSWORD
This will provide a message back along the lines of "Successfully disabled root user."

  • Unable to disable root after solving login issues

Having followed the steps to regain access to my macbook pro after upgrading to OS X 10.5, I am now unable to disable root as an account or remove the "Other" account from my login in screen.
I have tried using Directory Utility, but this doesn't show root as enabled. However, when I click on enable root, nothing happens so I cannot even enable and then disable.
I can still login as "root" and I am concerned with leaving this active.
Can anyone suggest a method of disabling the root account?

In case anyone else is having this issue, I've found a fix that's worked for my configuration.
In my usual account, which is also and administrators account, I opened Terminal from Utilities and typed:
    dsenableroot
at the the prompt. I was then asked for my account password
I was then asked for a root password - I entered the root password I created when I reset the password from the installer password reset utility, and then confirmed the same password.
I then entered the disable command:
    dsenableroot -d
followed by my usual account password.
After shutting down and rebooting, I only had my usual account login left and the mysterious "Other" had disappeared and root was disabled.

  • Delete root password

Hi i am trying to enable root access as i need to perform a check on something and it seems that there is already a root password issued. when i enabled root in netinfo then went and tried to enter a password it says inncorret password meaning there is an old password and to change it i have to enter it. i have enabled root on this machince before to do various things but i always disable it and i thought that upon disabling root it also deletes the root password you set. is there a way to delete it manually with a terminal command or something?
macbook core duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1.83 ghz processor, 1 gb ram

If you have an "admin" account, you could set a new password for the "root" account using 'passwd' or 'dsenableroot', i.e. either of:<pre>sudo passwd root
dsenableroot -u adminusername</pre>For that matter, are you sure there is a need to enable to "root" user at all? An "admin" account can be used for many administrative functions without resorting to "root"...

  • "Other option"at login window.

    Hi,
My login window is displaying the "other" option and I want to disable it, I have no use for it, as a matter of fact I don't know why is being displayed lately. Any pointer?

..."the root account is disabled I checked in directory utility."...
You don't mention if "root" ever was enabled... it isn't an effect that I have been able to reproduce, but other users have posted that after enabling "root" at some point, the presence of the "Other..." button in the login window can depend on how the "root" account was disabled. Specifically, "Other" may persist if "root" was disabled through "Directory Utility.app", as opposed to disabling "root" using '/usr/sbin/dsenableroot' (there are differences in the changes made to the user record).
    Try launching "/Applications" > "Utilities" > "Terminal.app" and entering this command:<pre>
    dsenableroot -u adminuser -d</pre>
Substitute an "admin" user's "short" name for 'adminuser', and enter that user's "admin" password when prompted for 'user password:'.

  • Resetting Administrator Password

I upgraded to Leopard a very long time ago. I was trying to create a Home Network with my roomates that have PC's. My roomate did the administration process via his computer and I have lost my administrative status. We erased the network from his Vista based PC and I still can't get it back. I tried using the Install DVD, but it doesn't allow me to restart my computer. The administrator requires the username and password in order to grant permission to install any software. We have tried both my username and password and my roomates username and password. Doesn't work. So, I can't get even passed the Install DVD to reset the password.
Also, I have been trying to backup my data and can't, because a username and password is also required by the administrator. Would any of my data be lost if I manage to get past the Install DVD Restart ordeal?
I can't download the latest update of leopard neither.

yes, that's what I meant. sorry, if this wasn't clear.
Worked perfectly. Thanks for your repetitive-solution-help.
Now, how could I eliminate the root user on the log-in screen. I tried Disabiling it in the Directory Utility's Edit menu, but it already has been disabled. Should I click enable and disable it again?
try enabling and disabling it. if that doesn't help, run the following command in terminal from an admin account.
    dsenableroot -d
You'll have to enter your user password (which you won't see). that's normal.

  • Changing lables of apple application

    Hi,
I want to put color labels on my application so they can be grouped by categories.
But when I select an application like iTunes and iCal, the label section is greyed out.
But for iDVD I can change it.
How can I put a label on iTunes and other software like it?
    Thanks

this is because the permissions structure for apple apps has been changed in Snow leopard. now admin users no longer have read+write rights to them.
there are several ways to deal with this. you can change permissions on the apple apps to give yourself full rights to the app. this has to be done from terminal. another somewhat less invasive option is to log in as root and change the labels from the root account. to activate root enter
    dsenableroot
in terminal. enter the passwords it asks for, then log out and log in as root. (use "other" option at the login screen).
when you are done with the root account log out of root, log back into your account and run
    dsenableroot -d
    in terminal to deactivate root.

  • Keep changing root password, keeps telling me password is wrong in terminal.

I used the migration tool to copy my documents over from my PC, but it created a separate user account. I want to move those files to my current account, but I don't have permission to access the folder unless I'm logged into that account (in which case I don't have access to the folder I want to move them to). I tried to change the folder permissions, but it said my root user password was incorrect. I changed it, got no error in doing so, and tried again. Still got the error. I found a thread with a similar problem (but not the same one) and followed the instructions in it. Still got the same error. How can I fix this?

In the title of this thread you list "keeps telling me password is wrong in terminal"???
When you open terminal have you tried the command, without the quotes "dsenableroot"?  You must be logged in as a local admin to do this.
If you try this, terminal will ask you for your admin account password then you can enter a new password for root and verify the new password.  Exit terminal Log out and log  back in with username root and the password you put in for the root account when you were in terminal.
There is a definite problem, or actually a couple of problems, with the directory utility when trying to enable root from directory Utility / edit.   Going the dsenableroot in terminal clears these problems out.

  • Bindings, coldfusion...and I messed it up

I've got a trial version of dreamweaver and I was messing
around with different things when I made the mistake of changing
the settings under bindings. Everything worked perfectly until
then. It said "create a site" and had a check mark by it, so I was
looking at number 2 and number 3 on the list and now the pages
won't work. my question is, how do I reset those properties back to
default or disable them or something?!
    Thanks so much!!
    CYNTHIA

I also don't know how to do what you ask inSingle User Mode and hope someone who does will tell you how to sort the login problem in SUM. What I can tell you is you do have another user, though one not set up by you. That user was set up by the system and is ' root' sometimes appearing as 'other'. You can enable root by giving it a password and you can do that with the dsenable command at a Single User Mode boot. See http://developer.apple.com/Mac/library/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/m an8/dsenableroot.8.html
What I don't know is if, considering your login list problem, is if the OS as it stands with you will bring up a login box allowing you to enter root alias other as a user and your SUM assigned PW.
Aside from sorting out your basic 'login list' problem, root's GUI will allow, per System Preferences, to set up another normal admin user. Even if you do get back to your first and only user,' only' in the sense that it is the only one set up by you (it may well still be there) keep the second admin to repair the other admin. You should also set up a standard user for day to day browsing and all other none admin tasks.

  • ARD - Enable Root and Set Password

Is there a way to enable root through ARD using a unix command? I need to set root on a couple hundred computers rather quickly.
I tried using the commands below and it failed I think because I needed to confirm the password.
    sudo passwd root
    password

Well, I've gone round and round with this and have been unable to find a working solution. dsenableroot should in theory work, but it fails on my system under ARD (either it lies and reports that the root was enabled when it wasn't, or it reports failure to enable). If you want to give it a try, though, here's the syntax that in theory should work (it does in Terminal on the workstation):
    dsenableroot -u youradminusersname -p thatuserspassword -r therootpassword
with the command sent as a user with admin privileges.
May I ask why you feel you need to enable the root user on a couple of hundred systems? This is normally a really risky thing to do. Perhaps if we understand what it is you need to accomplish, we can come up with a different way of achieving the same thing.
    Regards.

  • Other... account on login

Hello, I used the terminal, I don't remember what for...
And when I can click to log in on my accout, there's the Guest's account and another one, called Other...
You have to enter a name and a password, if I enter those, it connects to my account...
Could someone tell me how to delete this account ? I've searched and I found nothing, the question has already been asked, but with no aswer, and it was on OS X Snow Leopard
I have a MacBook Pro mid 2012 OSX Mountain Lion
If someone can help it would be nice... Thank you.
I finally found, enter this in terminal :
    dsenableroot -d

    Hi
OSX Server is not the XServe. The XServe is hardware built especially for OSX Server although it is not exclusive to it. You should have really posted here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=96
Never mind no harm done. Let's see if we can help. The 'Other' account also appears if you've configured your client mac to access a networked home account. Generally provided by Microsoft's Active Directory or Apple's Open Directory. Two variations of the same theme.
If you really don't want to participate in an LDAP environment you could simply launch Terminal and issue this command:
    sudo rm -R -v /Library/Preferences/DirectoryService
Provide the password (you won't see it being typed) when prompted.
    Restart your mac.

  • Configuring Terminal shell problems

I've been trying to make my Terminal shell login feel like the linux shell that I use at work. One major thing for this to feel right for me is for the up and down cursor keys to perform a history search up/down. I've added the following to my ~/.tcshrc
    bindkey "^[[A" history-search-backward
    bindkey "^[[B" history-search-forward
Upon launching terminal I test the history searching by typing in a series of commands and then trying to search up through them but by starting with some of the letters of the commands to search for on the command line. This doesn't work.
I did notice by re-sourcing my .tcshrc to fix something else that all of a sudden the up/down keys were working correctly.
I would like to know why it is that i have to resource the .tcshrc file to get this to work, and if anyone has any suggestions for how to fix this problem i'd really appreciate it.
    Cheers

I don't have root account setup so can't write to those global files.
you can just use sudo, no need to activate root.
    just do
    *sudo -s*
and then use your favorite command line editor to add your commands to /etc/csh.login
Also, activating root is very easy. From CL you can enter
    dsenableroot
I did man on tcsh as well and tried adding the settings into ~/.login as well.. an echo shows it being used but it don't work...
I may reinstall sometime but i'm frustrated at losing a lot of my keychain and all that.. is there someway to back that up i wonder.
Hmm i was going to setup a script to apply the commands for me, of course a shell script instances its own shell so i can't use that... Argh.. i'm left with a source being required, i'll hide it in an alias, which is working so i can just type fixHistorySearch whenever i want to do some serious console work (which at the moment at least is fairly rare)
Thanks a lot for your help.. I guess there's no way i can ask apple directly what is going on with this bizarre problem?
Not on these boards. apple reps never post here. You can try calling apple support but since the problem is clearly specific to you machine they'll just tell you to reinstall.
    Cheers
