Dual 5508 controllers ?

I currently have 1 5508 WLC running in prod that has a 25 AP license. Unfort wireless access has really caught on in the company
and I am now at my max for AP's but I need more.
After suffering a mild stroke from the sticker shock of the 50 ap license upgrade, I also have a 5508 WLC in my testing environment that
came with a 25 AP license.
Am I able to run both in prod at the same time ? So half of my AP's connect to one controller and the other half to the 2nd WLC ?
Looking for some design advice if I need to run them both. What options to I have ?
Cheers
Dave

Dave,
As Michael said, you can do that.
Create same SSIDs on both WLCs with same security method and security keys (if any), same VLAN, same DHCP scope...etc.
use same mobility gropu name and same RF gropu name.
This way you can have client moving among APs on different controllers smoothly (keeping in mind that RF enviornment and cell adjacency correctly met).
If you need any assistance with this just use family friend GOOGLE
search for "cisco wireless controller rf gropus" for example to check how to configure them.
Good luck.

  • 2 Cisco WLC 5508 controllers and software upgrade 7.6.130 + FUS 1.9

    Hi
I have two WLC 5508 controllers that need 7.6.130 and FUS 1.9 installed. (Current version 7.3 and FUS 1.7)
Configuration: One controller is at Site A and the other controller is at Site B (two different states..)
They're configured so that if Site A goes down, Site A AP's will failover to Site B and vice versa ..
    - What would be the recommended approach for upgrading the software to 7.6.130.0 (from 7.3) and also upgrading FUS 1.9 (from 1.7)?
My plan was to download 7.6.130.0 to both controllers and pre-download the software to all AP's (about 100 total between both sites) and then reboot the controllers at night at the same time? Or one before the other?
Step 2. Install FUS 1.9 to each controller.
I'm concerned over what might happen during the upgrade and AP failover etc..
    Thanks

This is what I would do:
Upload v7.6.130.0 to all WLCs and then use the pre image download to push the image to all access points.
    Dont reboot the wlc
Image swap in the access points so that v7.6.130.0 is primary
Move all access point to one of the WLCs (A)
Enable ap AAA authentication on the WLC that has no access points and the one you will work on first.  This prevents access points from joining
    Reboot the WLC (A)
    Upload the FUS 1.9.0.0
Reboot WLC (A) this takes up to 45 minutes
When the WLC (A) comes back online, uncheck ap AAA authentication
Move access points from WLC (B) to WLC (A)
Enable ap  AAA authentication on  WLC (B)
Perform all the other task you did earlier on WLC (A)
    That's it.

  • Prime Infrastructure 2.1 updating 5508 controllers in HA mode

I'm having the same issue from PI 2.1 trying to import 7.6.130 for my 5508 controllers and it saying "Image not Applicable for this Device" even though I know that image is applicable.
Also, has anyone ever updated 5508 controllers in HA mode from Prime Infrastructure?

  • Redundant guest anchor/office extend 5508 controllers

    Hello,
We are looking to deploy 2 guest anchor/office extend 250 AP 5508 Controllers.
The first 5508 would be primary for both public wireless and office extend AP's.  The second 5508 would not be used unless the first controller fails.
What is best practice when it comes to the certificate for public wireless.  Should I create single certificate for both controllers or have two different certificates?
    Thanks

This makes sense.  What would I need to do so that the networks don't overlap on both controllers for guest?  Would I need to make new networks on the secondary controller:

Looking for best speed and reliability - can't find any documentation explaining how best to utilize dual controllers in SE-3320 RAID array.
Only reference is in "Sun StorEdge 3000 Family Best Practices" document, that says:
Use dual-controller arrays to avoid a single point of failure. A dual-controller SCSI array features a default active-to-active controller configuration. This configuration improved application availability because, in the unlikely event of a controller failure, the array automatically fails over to a second controller, resulting in no interruption of data flow.
Does the HBA provide the same active-active configuration?
Can BOTH ports of HBA be connected to the dual controllers (one-to-one) to provide redundency/failover at both ends?
    Does this provide better throughput?

  • WLC mobility group between 4404 and 5508 controllers

Mobility 'Control and Data Path Down' between 4404 and 5508 WLC's.
Hello, we have 5 x 4404 WLC's running 7.0.240.0 with mobility configured fine between them.
We have installed a 5508 with HA running 7.4.110.0, and have tried to add it to the mobility group, however we see 'Control and Data Path Down' between the new 5508 and all the 4404 controllers.
    All controllers have:
    The same virtual address
Management interfaces are in the same VLAN, and indeed all the controllers connect via the same pair of 3750X stacked switches.

    Kind regards

    Thanks Sandeep.
I am well versed with WLC's and mobility, however trying to add a 5508 to a mobility group with 4404's has come up with a bit of a curve ball.
All the 4404 controllers all joined the mobility group fine, no problems at all - its only the 5508 I am struggling with.
In theory its simple, populate the IP address, and MAC addres of the management interface of the remote WLC, as long as the management interfaces are in the same VLAN, and the Default Mobility Domain Name are the same it should come up.
Interestingly I have found the 5508 reports its own management interface MAC address incorrectly when viewing the Mobility Groups:
    For example:
    {Screen shot WLC1.jpg}
5508 management address is 10.95.x.x and when viewing the Mobility Management screen it shows its own MAC address as bc:16:65:f9:37:60.
    however!
From our router is I do an sh arp | i 10.95.x.x (controller management address), I see:f872.eaee.becf.
    {Screen shot wlc2.jpg}
Hence the WLC reports as: bc:16:65:f9:37:60
    and
The network reports as: f872.eaee.becf for the same IP address.
I have changed the other WLC's to the MAC adress seen on the network for the new controller, aka changed from
    bc:16:65:f9:37:60
    to
    f8:72:ea:ee:be:cf
I now see the controllers reporting the mobility with the new controller as 'Control Path Down', however I am at a loss as to what may be causing this?
    Kind regards

  • Dual 2504 controllers

    Hello,
My favorite customer is having another quirky issue.
He has 2 2504 controllers, 7.2 software. One is deployed in his local office, one in the data centre on different subnets. He has a number of remote sites. He takes new APs, and primes them to his local office controller as Flex-Connect APs, enables Telnet/SSH and names them. Then he ships them to site for the local resource to plug in. Last Thursday he sent a primed AP to a remote site and it was plugged in. The AP joined the secondary controller in the data centre, not the previous, primary controller. All the config was wiped, but he could re-configure it in the secondary controller GUI. He rebooted it, and it then joined the primary controller fine.
    The controllers have:
local office WLC set as primary in the HA settings
data centre WLC set as secondary in the HA settings
I had him set up DHCP opt 43 with both WLC IP addresses in proper sequential order
Apparently no WAN issues to prevent the initial connection to the primary
I've asked him to monitor the AP join next time through debugs on the WLC CLI, but any ideas out there why it doesn't join with the historical controller? I know that 2504s don't have the SSO functionality that 5508s, but are there some special quirks/tricks?
    thanks in advance,
    Andrew

Well make sure that the mobility was up between the two. Also the hostname you enter in the high availability tab is case sensitive. As far as dhcp option 43, I would just point it to the office WLC and even if using DNS I would point it to the local office WLC.

  • Firewall between 5508 controllers

I am deploying a 5508 controller with a second HA-SKU 5508 controller as backup - they will be separated by a firewall.
Apart from 16666 UDP are there any other ports that need to be open between the controllers?
I already have setup UDP 5246 and 5247 for CAPWAP to the controllers.
    Thanks
    Roger

    Thanks Abhishek,
I already have those enabled my question was referencing the communication between the Primary and Backup controller
This is not an HA setup, There will be a Primary controller in one location and a backup controller in a secondary location. they will be separated by a firewall.
I will be enabling 16666 and 16667 UDP between the controllers.
My question was had anyone had to open any more ports in this setup?
    Thanks

  • VPCs for Dual NetApp Controllers

    OK, here is our setup:
1 3240 NetApp with Dual Controllers (Gen 1)
    2 5548s
    2 2232s
Servers with Dual Port Emulex CNAs (Gen 2)
    1 4507 to legacy network
I am trying to figure out how to be redundant as possible, so if we lose a 2k or a 5k the servers can still get to the SAN.
    Questions:
How are the port channels setup? vPCs sertup? LACP is enabled on the NETApp. Can the 5ks present a single vPC to each controller?
Thanks for any advice or help you can provide,
    P.

Run vPC on the two NX5K switches.
From NetApp FAS, connect one ethernet to first 5K. Connect second ethernet to second 5K.
Configure port-channel on 5K with member interface going down to NetApp FAS.
Associate Port-Channel with a vPC ID. The vPC ID must be the same.

    Hi All,
I Need to Know few informations about Mibs, we are  onboarding devices to HP NNM Tool for monitoring purposes. we have 10 wireless controllers.. We need to enable following traps for AP to pull from tool.
for the below traps to be enabled what are all the traps have to be enabled in controller ?? we have 4400 & 5500 series controllers.
I seen WLC -> SNMP -> trap control , lots of option, i need to clarify 2 thigs

I can tell you one thing cause your question is kind of crypto to me.
You can download the whole mib file for the current image running on your controller from the download software section on cisco site.
Also you can use the SNMP Object navigator on cisco site to look for whatever you want.
And if it is  urgent open TAC case cause we are responding on best effort.

  • Cisco Nexus 5548UP connect to dual NetApp controllers using FCOE

Here is my setup, I have two 5548UP's connected via VPC peer link. I am tring to use VPC to connect to a NetApp with dual 10gb ports using FCOE, with each 5548 getting one of the connections.
I then want to use VPC to connect to a dell server that has dual 10gb ports using FCOE as well with each 5548 getting a connection. I am new to FCOE, any help would be appreciated. I am getting confused in the configuration for both. Thanks

    Erik,
Can you check the deployment guides from links pasted below -
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/solutions/ns340/ns414/ns742/ns743/ns1050/landing_flexpod.html
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/solutions/SBA/February2013/Cisco_SBA_DC_NetAppStorageDeploymentGuide-Feb2013.pdf
Head to the Nexus 5k section and check how FCoE is configured, how vPC is configured..
Once you tackle 5k, depending on your Environment (from Netapp perspective), check how to create Interface groups.

  • TS2972 Cannot get home sharing and airplay to work over corporate wifi.  Cisco WLC 5508 controllers.  Home sharing and Airplay is turned on.  Apple ID and account the same on each device.  All software is at the latest version.  Devices work individually.

All devices at latest software.  Each device works individually ie. apple tv can play netflix and hulu videos, itunes works on both an iPad2 and a Pc with latest itunes version.  Firewall disabled ports open.  Devices on same vlan.  Laptop can ping ipad and apple-tv, iPad can ping laptop and apple-tv.  The deives just do not see each other ever.  All cisco settings are set to recommended settings for home sharing to work.  Any ideas?

I seem to have a similar problem.  I have a Macbook and a PC, both running the current version of iTunes.  On the APTV (also running the current software version), only my Macbook library shows up under "computers".  Home Sharing is turned on for both and my Macbook library shows up under "Shared" on the PC, but the PC iTunes library doesn't show up on the Macbook or the APTV.
My question then is: How is it that my Macbook iTunes library can show up on the PC and on the APTV, but the PC iTunes library doesn't show up on either?  If the PC can see the shared libraries, doesn't that mean it's on the same network?  Along those same lines, "Shared" libraries do NOT show up on the Macbook.  Again I ask, how is it that I can see the Macbook library on the PC, but the Macbook doesn't show any Shared libraries?
All of this worked just fine before the upgrade to iOS 5 by the way.  I had no issues seeing any library on any devices and the APTV found both computers.
Please help.  This is really annoying!

  • Client AP Selection

Recently, as funds allow, I have been building some coverage overlap into some of the larger areas of the wireless network that I run.
My standard for an indoor AP is the 1142 series, atatched to dual 5508 controllers running 7.0.98.0 code.
Some of the APs have adjusted power levels and are no longer running at full power.
I have run into a situation where my boss is experiencing frequent disconnects with his wireless phone (CP9971...a wireless stationary desk phone). there are two access points within -60 db of each other in our area of the building. For some reason, his phone favors the AP furthest from his office, rather than the AP that is much closer. The phone has a wireless survey mode and sometimes it even fails to see the AP much closer. My boss's office has standard sheetrock walls, which shouldn't be a problem for WiFi.
Both access points have about 6 clients each attached. I locked the phone dow to 5Ghz, thinking it would run into less issues, as 5Ghz is generally a cleaner band with more available space. This still did not help.
I have run into this issue with some laptops...all I could get out of TAC was "update the drivers"....and I tried that...it didn't work...
This happens ocasionally with the CTO's laptop....disconnects and favoring the "wrong" AP....and I have not been able to track it down....
Updated the drivers and still no luck on that one as well...his laptop is a Lenovo Thinkpad....
Are there any parameters on the WLAN that I need to look at? The Voice WLAN uses WPA2/PSK while the Data WLAN uses PEAP/MSCHAPV2 as the authentication solution....
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Phill

That my friend is a very good question.
The session timeout is a forced re-authentication. If a client does not reauthenticate to renew the session timeout, they are deauthenticated.
However, in the case of dot1x clients, you might have a client re-authenticating behind the scenes which extends the session.
You should check out "debug client " between a client doing PSK and dot1x and see what happens at the session timeout interval.....  I wouldn't be surprised if one client does some kind of key rotation and never gets deauthenticated.....
Anyhow, back to your question.   For voice deployments I would usually suggest this feature either be completely disabled or at least set to like 8 or 12 hours.  Actually, even for data clients, I often suggest 8-12 hours if anyone has complaints of being deauthenticated.
I honestly don't know the root reason for a session timeouit, but I'd venture a guess to say that in WEP days it was used as a means of making sure a client was still who they claimed to be (maybe to rotate encryption keys at regular intervals?)

  • LWAP issues with a 5508 controller after AP upgrade

Hi All, I’m having a few problems after upgrading my AP to a LWAP and hope you can help.
I have an AIR-AP1242AG-E-K9 which had c1240-k9w8-mx.124-21a.JA loaded, I followed the link below and upgraded with Cisco’s upgrade tool to c1240-rcvk9w8-mx with no problems at all, after the upgrade I could then see the LWAP on the 4402 controller and had it working a treat.
Now the problems begin, I brought it into the office where we have 5508 controllers, plug in the LWAP into our management switch and boot it up I get an IP assigned from the DHCP server and the AP goes into discovery mode but never finds the controller.
I have logged the boot process but this does not give much away, our other 1100 series AP’s boot fine, I was hoping that somebody here could help me resolve this issue.
