Duplicates in Outlook connector global address list (GAL)

I am getting duplicates in GAL of Outlook 2007, some addresses appear seven times or more. I have followed the guide for VLV Browsing, it makes no difference to the problem. There are less duplicates if I use search base: ou=People,o=Organization1,dc=example,dc=com. Actually I want to use search base: dc=example,dc=com, thus showing all the organizations (truely global address book). In order for this to work I have use the ACI access control to filter the entries that I want in the GAL (ACI I'm using is below). I seems that when I filter out entries with "psincludeingab=false" It correctly doesn't display that contact but a duplicate entry of another contact occurs in it's place. It's as if it's getting empty entries due to ACI filtering and filling the blank entries in with the last successfully retrieved entries. Thunderbird GAL (ldap address book) is much better, I can filter it server -side (ACI) or client side (search filter in the advanced tab). I have been battling with this issue for a while now, I can't understand why nobody else appears to have this problem.
ACI for valid users/groups/resources:
ACI syntax:
(target = ldap:///o=*,dc=example,dc=com) (targetscope = subtree) (targetfilter = (& (!(psincludeingab=false)) (|(objectclass=inetorgperson)(objectclass=inetResource)(objectclass=icscalendargroup))))(targetattr != "userPassword") (version 3.0; acl "Access Corporate Directory"; allow (read, compare, search) (userdn = "ldap:///uid=*,ou=People,o=*,dc=example,dc=com");)
ACI location:
dc=example,dc=com

1) I can't easily share address books accross orgs/domains.Sharing personal address-books across hosted domains is definitely a useful feature. I could however not find an existing RFE (request for enhancement) to have this feature added to Convergence or UWC/CE so it seems the demand for such a feature is low.
2) I can't subsribe or even access subcribed address books in Convergence.Bug #6690621 - "Enable advanced personal address book functionality (creation/deletion/sharing)". Hopefully this feature is added in Convergence Update 1.
3) I can't access any address book (other than GAL) in Thunderbird.Thunderbirds in-built LDAP functionality is basic i.e. no LDAP write support which makes integrating LDAP PAB address-book functionality costly to develop. As no paying customers seem to care enough about Thunderbird PAB support to raise this as an issue I don't believe there are any intentions to address this in the short-term.
The longer-term vision is to provide a CardDAV server for which there are existing Thunderbird extensions:
http://wikis.sun.com/display/CommSuite/Project+Aries
4) I can't create a user that exists in more than one org/domain whilst having only one mailbox yet able to send from all their domain aliases. The problem with this workaround is neither Comms Express nor Convergence allow change of From address and thus consolidated sent items is not possible.Actually it is possible to customize Comms Express to allow a user to select from a From: drop-down listing of their mailequivalentaddress: attributes. I have provided these steps to customers who have logged support cases in the past.
There is a longer-term plan to have 'multiple send identities' in Convergence along the same lines as Thunderbird.
RFE #6673157 - "Multiple send identies".
On the whole I'm very happy with Comms Suite, I like the fact that it all works over Internet, not just LAN (thick client, thin client and administration interfaces).The various components of Comm Suite were developed with a large ISP style deployments in mind so working across the Internet is a given.
What could definetely be improved is more features for multi-org/domain companies/enterprises that are both seperate and yet together on different levels and services. In the ISP world hosted domains remain very-much separate. As you have noted this model doesn't apply for smaller deployments (Universities/SME) so there is definitely work that can be done on this level.
Also needs more GUI configuration and managemant services (e.g. mailbox management/statistics, more DA options).The underpinnings of GUI configuration (or at least simplified configuration/administration) is already occurring with a shift towards XML storage of configuration data in Messaging Server (and I believe IM server). This step makes it much easier to build tools (whether they be cli/gui based) which can parse/modify the existing configuration.
But as I'm sure I've mentioned in the past, the only way to get traction on the features you desire is to bring these issues up with your Sun Account Rep.

Shane.

  • Outlook Connector - Global Address list

    Our Outlook hangs when we try to open the Global Address List from LDAP. This totally locks the computer.
    What should be done to overcome the problem?

    What do you see in the LDAP access log when you do this?
    It's possible that your global list is returning more entries than your ldap is configured to allow, ad Outlook isn't happy with the results. It's also possible that the search is simply taking a loooong time.

  • Outlook / Oracle Global Address List

    Just a couple of quick questions regarding manipulating the Global Address List.
    Firstly, is it possible to hide an entry that exists in the Oracle Directory Service from the GAL (for example, removing the orcladmin user from the address book).? Also whats the best way to expose an Alias to the GAL? We use aliases, coupled with a server side rules, to deliver mail to shared folders and would like the aliases visible in the address book to all users.
    On an unrelated point, is it possible to automatically un-hide new shared folders within the outlook connector? (i.e. instead of having to go to the properties for Shared Folders and manually un-hiding them on each users machine, can it be done administratively, remotely?)
    Thanks.

    Hello
    I don't know if you can do LDAP with VBA, but the OCS directory can be querried that way.

  • Cannot see Global Address List (GAL) when I type in name in email

    we have BES 10 with some Q10s and Z10s.  on this one particular Z10, when I begin to type a name in, it does not automatically give me suggestions withinthe global address list (a list below) with the names that have that sequence in.
    On all the other ones, I get suggestions that are part of the GAL.  is there a setting for this and how can I make it so it suggests/looks up the gal when I type a name in?
    to circumvent this I can type a name in and then click on 'lookup' and then it resolves some names within the GAL, but this is tedious and the other phones don't act this way.
    thanks for any help

  • Global Address List (GAL) does not show up under group Contacts

    I am an exchange administrator for a large organization. One of our user has an issue where he cannot see the GAL on his phone. Goes to Contacts, tap Groups, no option for GAL available. I have set up the Exchange account on the phone and he can get emails. Mail, Contacts, Calendars are all on. I have deleted the exchange account and created a new one but still no GAL. Please help. Thank you in advance!

    On my phone I go to the Groups screen and at the bottom of the list it says "(account name) Global Address List".

  • Get users from Global Address List (GAL) using FindPeople operation of Office 365

    I need to find details of all users using FindPeople operation. If I perform any search by giving value in the <QueryString> element, I get result from both GAL + My Contacts but if I remove the QueryString, I am forced to provide folder name in which
    to search else I get "Internal error" resonse.
    Is there any way I can retrieve/browse all the users in GAL ?

    >> I need to find details of all users using FindPeople operation
    How big is your GAL ? the problem with using a QueryString if you want all users is even if you use a string like SMTP: this will only return the first 100 entires in the GAL. There is a note in the link Laeeq posted that states " When
    searching the GAL as the primary search folder, you must specify a query string instead of a restriction, because this operation does not allow for browsing of the GAL."
    One way you can use to browse the GAL using this operation is to use the Guid of the Gal (or other address list you want to browse) you can get the Addresslist guid using the Get-GlobalAddressList cmdlet
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996579(v=exchg.150).aspx and then you can use code like
    FindPeopleType fpType = new FindPeopleType();
    IndexedPageViewType indexPageView = new IndexedPageViewType();
    indexPageView.BasePoint = IndexBasePointType.Beginning;
    indexPageView.Offset = 0;
    indexPageView.MaxEntriesReturned = 100;
    indexPageView.MaxEntriesReturnedSpecified = true;
    fpType.IndexedPageItemView = indexPageView;
    fpType.ParentFolderId = new TargetFolderIdType();
    DistinguishedFolderIdType contactsFolder = new DistinguishedFolderIdType();
    AddressListIdType adList = new AddressListIdType();
    adList.Id = "2117949e-abe8-4915-91eb-9999f867fd8de";
    fpType.ParentFolderId.Item = adList;
    FindPeopleResponseMessageType fpm = null;
    do
    fpm = esb.FindPeople(fpType);
    if (fpm.ResponseClass == ResponseClassType.Success)
    foreach (PersonaType PsCnt in fpm.People) {
    Console.WriteLine(PsCnt.EmailAddress.EmailAddress);
    indexPageView.Offset += fpm.People.Length;
    else {
    throw new Exception("Error");
    } while (fpm.TotalNumberOfPeopleInView > indexPageView.Offset);
    Cheers

  • No Global Address List (GAL)??

    I just got my iPhone 3G yesterday and got Exchange set up. I am able to send e-mails and set calendar appointments. However, I do not seem to be able to look up people in the GAL. I have sync of contacts disabled from my exchange account. Do I need to have that turned on for GAL to work? I tried turning it on but then it threatened to wipe out the existing contacts on my phone.
    The contacts on my phone are largely personal contacts, so I don't want to sync that with the company server.

    Hi there--I have same problem. I get corp email, caldendar synchs and i see the personal contacts directories i had setup in outlook...but I cannot ping the GAL directory to find people in the company....let me know if you have had any luck!

  • Employee photos in Global Address List (GAL) lookups

    I recently read that Exchange 2010 introduces a new cmdlet that lets you import small thumbnail images into Active Directory (the thumbnailPhoto attribute), and these will display in the GAL in Outlook 2010 ( http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2010/03/10/454223.aspx). This got some gears turning, and I've been trying to get the small photos to display on my mobile devices (BlackBerry and iPhone) to no avail. I don't expect to get help for the BlackBerry here, but when I do a GAL lookup on an iPhone, I do see what looks like a placeholder for an image. How do I get an image to display here? Is it the photo attribute in Active Directory? Is it the thumbnailPhoto attribute? Is there some special configuration needed on my Exchange 2007 server for this to show up?
    I don't even know if what I want is a possibility, but try it yourself. Do a GAL lookup on your iPhone/iTouch. When you click through to a user, you will see what looks like a placeholder for a picture in the upper left.
    You can see an example of what I'm referring to here: http://www.colorado.edu/its/docs/email/exchange/programs/images/iphonegal_06.gif

    The cmdlet is new to Exchange 2010, but the Active Directory attributes (photo, jpegPhoto, thumbnailPhoto) are not new. Microsoft wouldn't be able to help, as this is specific to the iPhone. I was just wondering if it were possible to replace the generic photo with one of the actual employee that is retreived from the GAL.
    I have seen absolutely nothing stating that this image actually attempts to pull anything from Active Directory, and agree that it could just be using the same template as other contacts. I just figured since the AD attributes have existed for the better part of a decade, and the GAL lookup does show an image, why not pull the thumbnailPhoto and display it here (that attribute is capped at 10KB or 96x96, so it's not like it's pulling that much more data).
    Perhaps this would be a question for the iPhone development team, or a feature request. Sadly, I wouldn't know where to find either one of those...

  • Exchange 2010- Global Address List

     Hello,
    I've created an automatic on-line room booking using outlook. I've also set-up external users with a limited user account which has access to Outlook Web Access to allow them to log in and book the meeting rooms. I have also changed some permissions which I
    was hoping will limit the external users access to the Global Address List, by doing so the external users now can't access the rooms list. Is there a way to restrict the access to the Global Address List without restricting the access to the room list for
    our external users?
    Thank you, Cyan Petals

    Hi,
    How do you make the external users access Exchange mailbox from OWA?
    Generally, we can use Address book policies (ABPs) to segment users into specific groups to provide customized views of your organization’s global address list (GAL). And it can be assigned to Exchange mailboxes.

  • Gloab Address List ( GAL ) not available

    Hi - We have configured corporate iPad airs to connect to corporate MS Exchange (2010) mailboxes.
    We use a digital certificate, an MDM profile, Nexus portwise syncs with AD to authenticate.
    Using the native iPad Mail client works well showing up to date mail, calendars & SOME recently used corporate mail addresses in the Global Address List, ( GAL ).

    Are there settings that i need to apply befor the GAL works? Or possibly any known issues ?

    The scenario is i am an employee and i want to get information regarding other employees(name,location) which are stored in outlook through my java application(using JOC).Just a point of clarification, there is no actual java code in the Sun Outlook Connector. The use of Java with most of our products names is for marketing/branding purposes only.
    Now there are employees who are not stored in my address book or local contacts.For them when i try to read the GAL i can get only their name and email address.So the 'cn:' (name) and 'mail:' (email address) attributes are being provided by the directory for a GAL search.
    however if i try displaying their details using the JOC it comes with proper information through the outlook pop up but cannot read this data.As I said in my previous response, the data that the Sun Outlook Connector provides in the GAL view is determined by the user that the GAL binds to the directory server as, plus the restrictions that user has on the information the directory server will provide for GAL searches/queries.
    This bind user is usually different from the 'super-user' bind user that UWC/Communications Express uses which is why you may see more information in UWC/CE compared to in the GAL in Outlook.
    Therefore you need to work with the Directory Server administrator to increase the information that the Sun Outlook Connector user is able to see.

  • Outlook Connector - Address book - Global Address List

    Using Outlook Connector version 7.2.402.1 on both Outlook 2003 and 2007 I am having an issue when trying to view the Global Address List. The vertical scroll bar doesn't activate unless I resize my Address Book window. Even after that it doesn't work that well. It is very erratic.
    I have set up a VLV index for the Address book as follows:
    dn: cn=outlook_connector_browsing_index,cn=xyz,cn=ldbm database,cn=plugins,cn=config
    cn: outlook_connector_browsing_index
    objectclass: top
    objectclass: vlvSearch
    vlvbase: o=xyz.edu,dc=xyz,dc=edu
    vlvfilter: (&(mail=*)(cn=*))
    vlvscope: 2
    dn: cn=Sort cn,cn=outlook_connector_browsing_index,cn=xyz,cn=ldbm database,cn=plugins,cn=config
    cn: Sort cn
    objectclass: top
    objectclass: vlvIndex
    vlvenabled: 1
    vlvsort: cn
    Doing a tail -f on the access log while using the Address Book I can see the VLV index being used. Is there something buggy with the Outlook Connector or is there something I missed in the VLV index?
    Thanks,
    Scott

    Users are unable to log into the Address Book server though Outlook if the Address Book (in Communications Express) is in SSL mode.
    Workaround: Open Communications Express within Internet Explorer and permanently accept the self-signed certificate.In this case instead of Communications Express, you would log into Convergence using the SSL path (https://server.domain.com/iwc) and permanently accept the certificate.

  • Importing Shared Contacts into the Global Address List (Outlook 2013)

    A colleague of mine has made a contact list which is going to be shared with other colleagues to increase productivity.
    His question is, if it's possible to import the contact list into the Global Address List after it has been shared?
    The contact list does not appear in my Global Address List, instead it appears in the People section (next to Calender).
    If you need technical info about the office version etc., feel free to ask!
    Thanks in advance.

    SP-Brown,
    You can import contacts into Active Directory, so that it can be included in GAL. There are some gotchas with that however. Maybe, a simple Outlook folder sharing is more convenient for you. You can share Outlook Contacts folders among collagues just the
    same as Outlook Calendar sharing works. Start here:
    https://support.office.com/en-au/article/Share-an-Outlook-calendar-with-other-people-cafb9303-1b1e-40d3-839d-b6abac03a5e8
    https://support.office.com/en-in/article/Share-a-contacts-folder-with-others-58ca1290-e170-4f89-a213-03aa6750bcf3
    With Exchange Public Folders you can achieve somewhat the same.
    If you really want to mess with AD and the GAL, this is your article:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/activedirectoryua/archive/2011/01/14/import-mail-contact-into-active-directory-using-csvde.aspx
    Jan
    The ideal situation would be if the shared Contacts Folder shows up in the Offline GAL, but I'll try to fiddle around with it for a bit.
    Is there also a possibilty that users can import a contact list so that appears in their Offline GAL?, I do think that it might be a hassle to keep the contacts updated....
