DW's God Awful FTP

Why Adobe, why does DW, one of the most brilliantly designed, efficient, highly usable pieces of software ever created, still, still, still have such an astoundingly horrible FTP engine? Just Google Dreamweaver ftp sucks, and you'll get the same complaints going back TEN YEARS. Its so awful as to be unusuable. I've used it on a dozen different machines in every version since 3 or 4, that's ten+ years, on every kind of internet connection in existence, on five different continents, and it's just total rubbish, slow, unsuccessfull 'puts' 25-50% of the time. Every time I hit ctrl+shft+D to put it's "here we go again." It's a super PITA having to constantly jump to Filezilla.
BTW your copyright on this page still says 2012. It's June. Yeesh.

Godday is a poor example Brett.  There have been long discussions over the years and here is I one I was involved in 2 years back:  http://forums.adobe.com/thread/889530 . It's definitely worth a read and one of the reasons DW has had issues with Godaddy is because Godaddy is not properly utilizing their security certifiicates with their shared hosting and it is causing a false sense of security that other programs like Filezilla are not catching for whatever reason. Also Adobe did post a FTP KB article to try and troubleshoot: http://helpx.adobe.com/en/dreamweaver/kb/error-uploading-or-downloading-files.html .
With regards to your 30% success rate what is failing?  Have you clicked on Site->Advanced->FTP Log to trace the issue of the failure to see what's happening with the FTP connection?  Can you post that information of the error that is causing your low success rate?
I have to agree with Nancy, that the CS6 release has been a welcomed improvement to FTP.  Albeit the stand-alone programs like Filezilla or a commercial alternative like Transmit can provide some features that DW does not, the functionality in DW CS6 is greatly improved. Up until that release I was with you that the FTP was horrific at best.

How to restore points in apps that were there before this god awful update?

This wonderful update wouldn't effect any of this if you backed-up properly to iCloud or restored after the update. I didn't lose anything in my update.

  • ITunes 7 is God Awful!!!!

And people say that Microsoft makes horrible crap....this thing has completely wiped out my playlists my music everything. It has made my Nano a worthless piece of crap. It's about time look for alternatives to the iPod and iTunes crappy DRM.

&Calm down. With such a massive change, there are likely to be some initial "teething" problems. And it's probably nothing to do with the iTunes 7 application itself.
Music previews stutter and reset/quit themselves
It may be just congestion in the iTunes Music Store servers as everyone and their dog hit the Store to see what's new. Try the "Load Complete Preview Before Playing" option in the iTunes Store preference.
whilst there are videos on the UK site that 'Aren't available because this music video is not on the UK site"
Are you sure that your looking at the UK site? Check the "My Store" setting at the bottom of the main iTMS page and make sure you're actually seeing the UK site. If you are, let the iTMS know about the problems with the videos; the best way is probably by using the form at the bottom of this web page.

  • New To DW5  , downloaded a page, looks a total mess

Ok, I just downloaded purchased DW5 and downloaded this page via our FTP
www.fasttracktofatloss.com [Moderator's note: This website autoplays video and tries to prevent users from leaving by loading a second page which also autoplays a video. Visit at your own risk.]
When I open it up in DW in design mode, it appears as a god awful mess, no comparison at all to how it looks on the page.
    See below.
Perhaps I was being somewhat hopeful, is this really the design view, I've not used Dreamweaver since the old MX days in 2002, back in those days you would open in design mode and pretty much what you saw was what the page looked like.
This for an amateur is just an unusuable mess.
Am I doing something daft here?

It's not just a big deal to the community here. It's actually part of the World Wide Web Consortium's Usability Guidelines.
    See http://www.w3.org/TR/UNDERSTANDING-WCAG20/visual-audio-contrast-dis-audio.html.
"If any audio on a Web page plays automatically for more than 3 seconds, either a mechanism is available to pause or stop the audio, or a mechanism is available to  control audio volume independently from the overall system volume  level."
Although the video on your main page has controls to enable the user to turn it off, they're hidden, so it takes more than three seconds to turn off. When someone tries to leave the page, another video plays, and the controls are inacessible because of the modal dialog box. If people are interested in your product, they'll happily click a start button to view your video.
Many people visit websites at work or in public libraries, where an autoplay video causes annoyance and/or embarrassment. Rather than convincing visitors of the value of your product, you're more likely to scare them away, particularly by playing another video when they try to leave. It's simply bad marketing.

  • Can I use an 2nd (or even 3rd) Apple TV device in our entertainment room that has multiple TV's

First of all I'm wiling to buy as many apple TV's as needed, so my question is not about how to do everything with one Apple TV device...but rather how to get multiple Apple TV devices in the same general location of the house to work without interfearing with one another. We bought a new (2nd) TV for the entertainment room so that our kids could use the 2nd TV for putting stuff up (via Apple TV airplay) from their phones and ipads...and still watch TV on the other TV.
Well, it turns out they often don't want to watch TV but rather use airplay from different devices on BOTH TV'S. Currently, we have one (2nd or 3rd generation) apple TV already and one problem/issue I have noticed was that if someone (Watcher #1) was already streaming to the Apple TV via airplay...a second person (Watcher #2) using a different device (iphone, ipad, etc) could send something via airplay to the same Apple TV which would automatically "override" and cause Watcher #1''s program/video/pic to stop and thus allow Watcher #2 to start watching...much to the annoyance of Watcher #1. (With 2 kids you can just imagine the arguing and fighting that goes on)
So, besides trying to eliminate this "battle of the airplays"...I'm curious if we buy a second Apple TV for the same room...how can we hook it up so there is no conflict...and how will which apple TV know which device is trying to to send airplay to it. I get the feeling that that we will end up with 2 TV's playing the same feed from one device...unless there is a better and more proper way.
Also, I would like to add a3rd Apple TV device to the TV in our home office so that I can use as well...but because of the close proximity to the entertainment room...I fear that if I try to send a feed to the apple TV in the office it will start to play on the TV's in the entertainment room.

You can have as many ATV's as you want, but I STRONGLY STRONGLY STRONGLY encourage you to use wired connections on all of them.  AirPlay is a god awful bug ridden failure prone feature under the best of circumstances.   Using it over WiFi is much worse.  And the band width load of three different devices connection to your WiFi access point to three different ATV's (total of six concurrent connections) will very likely over whelm your WiFi hardware.
I actually encourage people to always use a wired connection with ATV in general.  It saves a LOT of head ache and frustration.  With three it is even more important.   As far as controlling which one you connect to.  They are three separate devices.  You select which one you want to send something too.  So if you want to send something to the one in your office then just select that ATV.   It would probably be good to setup their names to be the location.   So something like "Office Apple TV".
As far as kids being brats and intentionally interrupting each others AirPlay connections...   Well there is only so much Apple can fix.  If someone else on the network that has access is deturnomand to be a jerk and interrupt someone else content they would be able to.

  • My Macbook hates me and I don't know why.

I bought a new macbook at the end of June 2008, and it has given me nothing but grief. After a few months of smooth running, random programs began to shut down while I was using them, such as Safari or Itunes. A few times it asked me to restart it completely, saying that there was an issue with Mac OS X. I thought nothing of it, because I switched from a shared PC that crashed often and just assumed that this was natural of all computers.
Then suddenly towards the end of October it crashed completely. Every time I turned it on it showed me either the loading screen or told me to restart the computer. I took it to an Apple Store where they did something to it without explaining to me what was going on, and I left the store after an hour, thinking everything was fixed.
It was not. Not only did random programs shut down again, but a month after my first trip to the Apple Store, it crashed again. I took it in and they replaced the hard drive, but not even 24 hours after I took it home, it crashed AGAIN. I brought it back and they told me that there was something wrong with either the airport or the logicboard, and they replaced both of them. That was in mid December. When I got it back, they assured me that nothing else would be wrong with it.
Well, guess what? It's doing the same thing again. For the past two weeks random programs have shut down, and just now when I turned it on, the loading screen popped up and has been "loading" for about ten minutes now. I have absolutely no idea what's wrong with it, and I'm at the end of my rope. The only thing I can think of is that there must be some kind of software problem that somehow transferred to my back up hard drive, which has subsequently infected my macbook after every time I've taken it back. I'm absolutely sick of this god awful machine and unless anyone has any bright ideas as to just what the heck is wrong with it, I'm going to ask for a replacement. I bought the darn thing because I'm a college student and I was told that it would be RELIABLE, which it has not been, because it has the uncanny knack for completely crashing right before I have any sort of important essay to write.
Does anyone have any ideas? I really don't want to hate the Macbook, but at this point I feel like justifying using this machine is like trying to justify a relationship with an abusive boyfriend. Should I just give up and buy a dell?

To add to Bee's questions... have you tried checking the hard disk for errors just in case? Ever done any maintenance since you've had the MacBook?
At least try checking the disk for errors using your restore disk. It's easy and pain free.
Insert your Mac OS X Install disc in your computer’s optical drive or an optical drive connected to your computer, and then restart your computer. When you hear the startup tone, hold down the C key until you see the progress indicator, which looks like a spinning gear.
Follow the onscreen instructions until the Menu Bar appears with the Utilities menu in it, choose Utilities > Disk Utility, click First Aid, and then click the Verify button. If DU reports errors, click Repair. When it's finished, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Disk. In the Startup Disk window select MacintoshHD 10.x.x and click Restart.
This is the old process of elimination routine. Check the drive... if everything is cool there, run the Apple Hardware Test.. here's how to do that:http://www.tuaw.com/2008/08/01/mac-101-running-the-apple-hardware-test-software/
    *If an applications quits unexpectedly*
    Try the following troubleshooting tips:
Reopen the application by clicking Reopen in the dialog that appears when the application quits.
If the application quits again after you click Reopen, click Try Again in the dialog that appears. If there is a problem with the application’s preferences, clicking Try Again temporarily changes the preferences to the default settings.
Restart your computer by choosing Apple menu > Restart.
Uninstall any plug-ins or enhancements from other manufacturers for the application. When you update an application or Mac OS X, a plug-in or enhancement you previously installed may no longer be compatible.
Read the application’s documentation (including Read Me notes) to check if it’s compatible with your version of Mac OS X.
Open another document in the application. There may be a problem with the document you were trying to open.
The trick to having your Macbook love you again is to learn how to take care of it. Maintenance, not running too many memory hogging apps at the same time, Repair Disk Permissions once a week, and make sure you have all your Software Updates. It takes time to learn how to take care of any computer. Macs are very reliable machines if you take care of them.

  • Please Help! Ready to throw my iPhone out the window!

First time posting on the forums but it's gotten to the point where my phone isn't even usable and I either need some answers or a good excuse to smash it.
    So here's the story:
I got my iPhone 3G (black, 16GB) in September (I think), last year. The phone operated fine with only minor annoyances as software updates came down to fix issues, no big deal. About 10 months in, the phone starts acting up:
If you want clarification on some problem, ask. I don’t want to type out 8 paragraphs if I don’t have to, should be pretty self-explanatory.
    Before OS 3:
1.) Can’t slide to answer calls. After ringing stops phone behaves normally.
2.) Doesn’t charge from wall or computer (happened randomly). Plug phone in, it says it’s charging but never charges.
3.) Can’t end calls / call doesn’t end when other line is hung up (thanks for wasting my minutes).
(these problems persist even with hard resets and full restores, including setting the phone up as a new phone rather than restoring from a backup)
After OS 3 AND full restore:
1.) Can’t slide to answer calls. After ringing stops phone behaves normally.
2.) Can’t end calls / call doesn’t end when other line is hung up (thanks for wasting my minutes).
(same as above, problems persist with hard resets and the like)
At any rate, I was home one weekend and figured I’d take the phone to the Genius bar at the Mayfair Mall Apple Store. Sounded like a good plan until I get to the mall and find the store is being renovated (seriously Apple, you can’t just put that on your site that a store is closed for some reason? Give me a break). Home is 3 hours away for me and the closest Apple store is 2.5 hours away. Awesome.
I deal with the problems for another month or so until my girlfriend and I take a trip to visit her friend in Minnesota. While there we go to the Mall of America so I decide to go to the Apple Store there (which is flappin’ giant, by the way). I explain my problems to the ‘Genius’ as well as informing him of the numerous restores/resets I’ve done both before and after the 3.0 update. He checks the phone for water damage and concludes that the headphone/dock ports are dusty which is causing the charging problem. I proceed to tell him I’ve cleaned them with compressed air before and the problems continued but he’s the ‘Genius’ so I let him do his thing and clean them again. Afterwards, he concludes (via the iPhone diagnostic software they have) that since I haven’t done a restore in about a month that I should do another one as that will likely remedy the problem. Right. Was he even listening when I explained that the problems happened before and after the 3.0 update or that I had on numerous occasions attempted to remedy the problem with hard resets and restores? Nope. My girlfriend over hears this (she is aware of the problems I was having and is a Apple-certified hardware technician at our local Mac store) and comes over to reiterate (albeit slightly more forcefully than I had initially) that the problems occur regardless of restore state or software version. The ‘Genius’ finally decides he can replace the phone after explaining to him that we are not anywhere near an Apple store and that there’s little time left in the warranty. I get my new phone set up and ready to go. Whew.
Everything is great. Phone works, no issues. Until ~2 months ago, new issues start cropping up.
OS 3.1+ (happen on all versions):
1.) Can’t sync, get “unable to complete. Phone was disconnected.” Error. (I checked around the forums and tried a few things but was unable to resolve the issue, including trying to remove the files that it kept ‘disconnecting’ on when it got to, no effect)
2.) Installing an application (be it via App Store on the phone or via sync with my desktop) results in the phone being unable to boot if turned off. When attempting to turn it back on, Apple logo shows then phone goes off after a few seconds. Only way to resolve this is by booting the phone directly to restore mode and doing a full restore.
3.) Earlier this week, my phone wouldn’t boot after having no apps (0, zero, zip, nada) on it after restoring it a few weeks back. Apple logo showed up then the spinning loading animation overlaid on the logo only to freeze. Attempted booting again and it came on (whew).
4.) Today, my phone wouldn’t boot at all, again, no apps are on or have been on the phone since I last restored it. Tried turning it off/on a few times, no good. I ended up restoring the phone again.
At first, my girlfriend was convinced that it was because I was synching with my desktop PC (obviously, blame it on the PC first), which I’ve been using since I got the phone and everything was fine until both phones randomly decided to crap out. I ended up restoring it on my MacBook Pro as a new phone just to see but the same thing happens with the apps causing it to not boot. After that we thought that it might be a single (or a few) apps that were just taking the phone down for some reason. I restored the phone with no apps and it seemed to be ok so I put 3 apps that I’ve had pretty much since they were available (and used to work without issue) back on to see. The plan was to add a few apps until the phone stopped working properly to narrow down the offending app. Just kidding! Just having those 3 apps (Beejive IM, Facebook, iDracula) causes the phone to not boot. I restore and try just Facebook. Same thing, phone doesn’t boot. Restore, try just Beejive. Same thing, phone won’t boot. By the way, the phone doesn’t boot even without me having LAUNCHED THE APPS AT ALL. Just by being on my phone it’s totally hosed.
At this point I have no idea what to do. I want to like my iPhone again but it’s terribly worthless when I have to restore it every other day and can’t use my ~$90 worth of apps (PS: even Apple’s own ‘Remote’ app brings the phone down). I really, really hate to say it but my old HTC Hermes (Windows Mobile 5/6) PDA phone was better than this (and WinMo is god-awful).
Does anyone have any suggestions? My phone is out of warranty now and I don’t have money to buy another phone even if I wanted to.
Also, I treat my phone like a baby. It hasn't been dropped a single time, been near water, or operated outside of the safe operating temp guidlines.
I'm willing to elaborate on any of the information I provided above, just let me know.

After the restore did the phone work properly for a while? Say, a day or so?
If so it is possible you have an app that doesn't let go of memory properly. I reboot my iPhone ( hold sleep/wake and hole till you see the apple logo) every few days. This resets the memory. The iPhone OS has doesn't seem to mange memory very well yet. So a reboot will help with that. I have had my phone almost slow to a stop before I started rebooting. Always reboot after installing a new app. Also do you close all pages in Safari when you are done? This is a good practice. Safari will run in the background and use processor time and drain your battery quicker. Create a new blank page then close all others when you are done browsing for a while. I have also found that certain web site that have animated images like weather maps will turn the phone into molasses. As soon as i close that page it gets faster.
If all of the above have no effect then as Tamara said it is time for a trip to the Genius bar.
    Good luck

  • Am I Losing A Decades Worth of iTunes Now?

I AM asking a legitimate question just please hear me out for once.  And also pleaes understand: disabilities come in all forms.  I'm not one of those jerks who has whatever the issue du jour is and takes it and claims that its my "thing" and that you cant use it to discriminate against me or I'll run off and "tell" - I mean I really do have brain damage and its very hard for me to make my point sometimes....so if I dont get there quite as fast as you want me to please just please please please STOP deleting me.
I mean I should think that the thousands of complaints all over the internet are enough to show there is some validity to mine that my posts would not need to be deleted on the basis of not meaning anything.  Or however it its being put.  And if I forget to dot an i or cross a T please dont get rid of it for that either just let me know and I will fix something!!!!!  The problems themselves are God-awful enough just dont make it worse by stifling me here on the only place that I thkn I can go to for help.
OK ....so...thats kind of out of the way.  I'm on a Mac.  I've got the new iTunes.  Its horrible.  I dont see the majority of my music and even less of my audiobooks.  I see about 75% I guess? of my apps.  Those have never gone missing before.   And the thing I've never bothered mentioning before just because all of the other issues are just so much more important is that all of my ringtones are also gone.  I dont even know what else is gone or misplaced or screwed with to the point of super-user unfriendly becuase its just all so not user-friendly!  And just like I've been forced to think and say constantly the past several months ever since this has become an epidemic with other websites (so if I mentioned this on previous posts...maybe I am repeating myself, but this IS what is happening!) these guys in Geekland are just having a ball showing off their skills.  Here's what its like:  Its like we live in a society where only a few people do all of the cooking.  And those few people just now discovered pasta.  And they're really excited about it.  And they REALLY want us to know just how excited they are about pasta.  So now every single thing we eat & drink has pasta in it, whether its needed or wanted or relevant to anything at all.  Pasta, pasta, choke you to death on pasta whether you like it or hate it, pasta.  But what they need to realize is that we have got years of our lives invested into other foods - whole gardens & stores buiilt up on other types of foods!  Eating macaroni 3 times a day might be good for some dude in Silicon Valley who wants to be a show off, but its creating a morbid obesity epidemic and leaving all of us constipated.
So anyway, tech guys at Apple, I am very happy for you that you discovered all these amazing designs and layouts & whatever that you can do with iTunes but stop forcing them upon us just because you find it exciting that you can come up with innovation.  A. maybe we are NOT impressed, maybe we dont care.  B. Maybe we would like to be left the heck alone....never asked for it?  and C. now what is happening for the first time ever is that I am growing resentful of Apple as a company & considering doing what I never thought I would.  Need I even mention what that is?  It sure would save me some money.   (I was sort of broke when I got this and found a place that let me finance this on credit...i was on a message board once & mentioned that I have a MBP and someone just slaaaaamed me for being a member of the bourgeiousie or however you spell it.  I was like yeahhhhh...youre real close.)
Desperately trying to revert back to an older version but its nearly impossible when youre missing (literally) an entire chunka brain.  (mamillary gland)  I do get around semi-fine - other parts always make up for lapses in 1 part of the brain but its not the easiest.  So I try to do things with 2 windows open or using a paper + the laptop or my phone + the laptop or whatever but just depends what I've got going on at any given time.  So Operation Try To Downgrade iTunes has gotten NOwhere so far.

You may find making iTunes 11 look more familiar is an easier option for you.
    From the top menu
    View > Show Sidebar
    View > Show Status Bar
lick on the blac arrow in search and untick Search Entire Library.
iTunes should now look more like you are used to. You may find you do not need to downgrade
Ringtones are now called Tones and are at the top in the left hand panel.
Here is a link on how to revert to the earlier version of iTunes

  • Pre-Approved Credit Check Problem

Okay. This is really a god awful nightmare. I am from Washington D.C. and I bought my phone in Boise, ID. At the store the gentleman asked me if i wanted to do the credit check there to save me a trip if I didn't get approved.
I agreed and was approved with no deposit. They gave me a pre-approved credit check number.
Upon filling out my billing information in iTunes I enter in the Pre-Approved code and the SAME address I gave the man at the store. I then get an error saying that they will NOT accept this code because the addresses do NOT match up. Therefore I have been unable to even begin the activation process.
I called the number they gave me. They told me I had to go to the store to fix it. I went. The people at the store looked at me like I had broccoli coming out of my ears. I was there for three hours (having been there for three hours for the phone) when they eventually told me to come back tomorrow.
I called the support line again. We hit a brick wall. All in all I have been transferred atleast five times for a total of five hours on the phone. I want to return this blasted device but they are demanding a 10% restocking fee for SOMEONE ELSES mess up.
So let's do the math. I waited three hours. Had a credit inquiry posted to my report. Paid $600. Talked to support for over five hours. And made a 20 mile drive three times.
I DO NOT WANT THIS PHONE ANYMORE. However. I would rather eat the $600 then pay the %10 percent return fee. A big EFF YOU to apple and at&t.
Now if I finally do get it activated I look forward to waiting another four days for it to work.

Well all the information I am putting in is valid, not made up. And still nothing!
    Anyone successful with this?
Also, if I just skip putting in the code I get further in the activation, up to the point where it tells me my three options with AT&T. At this point there is a LINK that says "I have a pre-approved credit code", but that link just returns you to the very beginning page (same as starting over)... wonder if it's broken or supposed to work that way?...

  • Questions on MCX Policies for Laptop/Mobile Users:

Questions on MCX Policies for Laptop/Mobile Users:
I have several managed Macs running Leopard. Many of them are MacBook laptops. My main MCX policies involve mapping printers and mounting network volumes at login. These are simple computer and group policies to help make the users life a little easier when it comes to finding and using network resources such as file server volumes and network printers.
Since most of my users are laptops, they are expressing 2 major concerns involving their laptops when they are off the LAN (i.e.; on the road at a cafe, working at home, staying at a hotel or when they have no network at all)
    1) When users are off our LAN, the Mac still tries to mount the network volumes in their OD/MCX login items when the user logs in (with cached mobile credentials). Can this be avoided? Windows PCs do not do this. If the PC laptop cant find an AD DC, they simply don't run the login scripts and thus dont try to mount/map network volumes. How can I make the Mac laptops only mount network volumes when they are on the LAN?
    2) Most Mac users have a Cisco VPN client, and use it regularly to connect to the company's LAN from home, hotels etc. Of course when they log into the network via VPN, their network volumes are not mounted automatically. Is their a way to re-run the MCX managed login items script once they connect to the VPN and mount (i.e.; "map") their network drives? Sure, users can simple use the "Connect To Server" option in the FInder (or perhaps try and use the god-awful Leopard Finder side bar discovery browser thingy which I hate - never mind), but I need a consistent automated way to mount volumes quickly and easily for my mobile users. There must be a way to run (or re-run) the login items part of my MCX policies.

    Ping!
I'm looking for this functionality too. Anyone have a solution to either of these? One that came to mind is to wrap the login items in a script which detects if the LAN is available.

  • Ok I'm Done With This Internet

I'm done with Time Warner and I'm so far past the point of enraged.
Well, I've had Time Warner Cable (Road Runner) in 3 different locations. Let me start off by saying this is the Time Warner Midwest Ohio area (Dayton). I live in the city of Urbana though.
    Once in Fort Hood, Texas
    Once in North Lewisburg, Ohio
and now here in Urbana, Ohio.
The first two was decent since cable wasn't really popular and it was kind of new. Time Warner offered amazing support and instantly loading web pages and song downloads were just the highlight of my year once it was installed. (Anyone who's ever had to use Dial up before will understand why). Well, let's fast forward to the year 2006 when I installed Time Warner at this location (Urbana, Ohio). It has been nothing but a nightmare to say the least about this company.
It started out small like every week there would be a couple disconnects or speeds would randomly slow down.. but w/e only a couple of times a week.. no big deal, but we still called out the customer service reps and oh boy aren't they a treat. Not only do they have no idea what they're doing, in the past 3 years the only thing they have done is replaced the modem and router, over and over and over again.
Well, in the past few months it's been hell. ALL DAY the internet just slows down to a halt and won't load web pages or any kind of activity what so ever for about 30 seconds then it resumes to normal. We get at least 2 disconnects a day and MAYBE it kicks back on that day/night. Some times (we have several computers hooked up through a router) it will just randomly pick a computer and won't let it connect. There are no firewalls blocking and connections on any computer, it's just completely random.
I'm so far past angry and I'm done calling out customer service reps who have absolutely no idea what they're talking about or doing. The last time they came here, they just opened up speedtest and ran that a few times and said they couldn't find any problems. Then they logged into some Modem interface and they couldn't read any of the terms on the page so they had to call their supervisor.. it's just.. good god.. The support for this company in this area is beyond wretched and a horrible abomination.
I've heard nothing but amazing things about Verizon Fios Internet.
Not to mention all of the equipment they have given us is from the year 1999-2000. Yes.. every single router/modem/piece of hardware they've given us has the sticker on it still and it's usually labeled from the year 2000. Thank god, they're staying on top of new hardware in this area.
Not to mention the upload speed is GOD AWFUL... I'm talking around .20kb/s Sharing any kind of files what so ever is a complete nightmare and takes up all the latency just even running file sharing programs and makes the service horrendously slow to the point you can't even browse the web.
Is Fios worth it? I have 4 computers in this house (my desktop, my roomies desktop and laptop and my landlord's desktop) We'd be all connected through wired (a hub) so I'd like to ask you all if Fios is worth it. I've heard tons of people praising Verizon and loving the service so I figured I would come here and ask the community to see what they think.
Sorry for my rant.. I feel better now.

That's the message I'm getting when I check for availablity for Fios Internet. I live on that street but that's not my address.
Also to one of the replies: If that's true and Fios isn't in Ohio.. I'll just cry. That means i'm stuck with Time Warner.

  • MELODIC SQUEALING - MacBook Pro 17" Unibody (Mid-2009)

    Hi,
I bought my MBP 17" directly from Apple shortly after the Unibody laptops came out.
I have a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 GB of memory.
I have been hearing this noise for quite some time, and I have searched for answers for quite some time, but now I am finally fed up and tired of hearing this god-awful noise even when I am running nothing processor intensive. My computer gets very HOT when I hear this sound, too.
I have locked my graphics card using gfxCardStatus. It does nothing for this problem.
I hear this sound with or without the power plug.
The sound is a melodic series of beeps, which will play, sometimes pause, play again, and then "stick" in a high-pitched squeal at the end.
You can hear the sound here: http://mrkrbrts.com/mbp_squeal.aiff
I have a warranty via the credit card I purchased the laptop on which comes into effect after Apple's initial 1-year warranty (I did not purchase the extended warranty), so I am wondering if I should go ahead and use this before it runs out. I HATE this sound.

    JonnyAlpha,
a miniature screw extractor would probably be your best bet. One manufacturer of them is Moody Tools.

  • Lion Address Book problem - all of over 2,000 contacts disappeared - one mysteriously reappeared - then they all reappeared during resync with Gmail!

The subject iine pretty much describes what happened.
I am wondering if it is anything to do with what looks like an odd file in the directory ~ Library -> Application Support -> Address Book
As well as the "real" database file there is this zero bytes one:
    AddressBook-v22.abcddb.0F392545-78F2-4AE6-8D30-457C138332B2.unknown
From the date, it might be something to do with installing and linking Cobook to Address Book maybe?
These are the files and folders in that directory (sub-directory files not shown):
I have enabled the debug menu in Address Book but have not been able to find any info about how to use it.  I lie!  I did read that I might possibly have been able to "retrieve" the contacts using the debug menu "Force Refresh" - however that was after I had started to resync with Gmail contacts.
I realised that something odd was going on during resync when I saw that there were over 4,000 contacts being processed rather than the 2,000 or so that I was expecting.  Initially, none of the contacts groups from Gmail were showing in Address Book after this partial sync (I stopped it when I saw what was happening).  However, after quitting and restarting Address Book, the groups appeared again.
I have not lost my contact data - as well as Gmail contacts I also have an Address Book backup from about two weeks ago and also the backup created by Cobook about two weeks ago.  (Installed Cobook as it looked like a very efficient way of getting to view individual contacts quickly - Quicksilver just isn't finding them at all).  I used third party app "Contacts Sync for Google Gmail" to link Address Book with Gmail as it gives you options about what to do for each duplicate card that it identifies.
I then spent a lot of time sorting through the contacts on Address Book, finding duplicates, updating data, etc. with the intention of managing contacts in Address Book from then on, rather than in Gmail. Not all of these changes are reflected in the Cobook backup or Gmail.
My worry is, with Lion being such a god-awful Pig's Ear in so many more ways than this, that this Address Book mess might happen again.
I seem to have spent most of my time over the last month wrestling with the numerous problems that keep cropping up with Lion and getting little to show for it.
WARNING! FOOT-STAMPING WHINGE ABOUT LION - LOOK AWAY AND DOWN TO THE HOWLING FACES - IT WON'T BE ANYTHING THAT YOU HAVEN'T HEARD BEFORE:
I gave up on OSX when I tried Panther - that was dreadful - but was lured back by Tiger, have used Leopard very comfortably for about 5 years, had a very happy couple of months with Snow Leopard and now - this mess that is Lion!  I have repaired OSX install permissions and "home user" permissions time and again, TinkerTooled it until I am blue in the face and it seems that every few days I manage to fix something and then almost immediately something else screws up. I can't upgrade to Mountain Lion on this machine and am seriously considering installing or running Linux as these problems with Lion are just never-ending - and then there are all the other stupid changes that have subsequently been sensibly reverted, mitigated or worked around in ML).
I have never bothered much with Address Book or Mail in the past as I have found them too limited.   I have used either the Gmail web interface or Thunderbird.  However, Gmail has started crashing my favourite browsers (Seamonkey and Firefox), Thunderbird has got just a bit too complicated and I cannot get Quicksilver to play ball with Gmail.  The Lion version of Address Book is better than Gmail Contacts and Mail Smart Folders can emulate Gmail filters and labels - a huge improvement.  So, just when these apps look good enough to be worth bothering with, they come part and parcel with what I have seen mocked, and rightly, as "Apple Vista"!
Sorry for that  but I am about at the end of my tether with it all ;-/
I would be very grateful if anyone can offer any advice about:
    1) That strange looking zero bytes file in the Address Book folder.
    2) Whether the Address Book debug menu options might be of any help in this situation?
There seem to be lots of people having problems with Address Book in both Lion and Mountain Lion, if not exactly this issue, so maybe the answers will help others too.
    Fingers crossed!
    Ms Mousette
ps. In the product list to tick for this question they are grouped so I cannot specify that this is actually nothing to do with the iPhone.  I have got a load of contacts on my iPhone too but I am not going to sync them until I have got this issue sorted out.

Could this font be the cause of the problem?
Possibly, since that font is not the one that Address Book uses and there is no method to specify or change the font used by Address Book. You could have recovered your Address Book contacts without syncing, so that could also be part of the problem. You should always make a keep a backup of your Address Book on your computer and in another safe location whenever you make any change to it.
May I ask why you haven't updated to 10.4.11 yet, as it provides various bug fixes and security enhancements?
    Mulder

  • How can the FFC possibly force Verizon to provide the service I've paid for?

So it seems that Verizon is quite fond of giving their customers alot of ******** and runaround in order to avoid providing the service they claim to be selling. After spending a TORTUROUS full hour of my time speaking with a customer service rep AND paying an ADDITIONAL $30 to continue having phone service I STILL don't have what I paid for, and customer service will not accept a third call from me today. SO, I have gone ahead and filed a complaint with the FCC. I didn't feel the need to make this a community discussion, but evidently this is the only way to inform this god awful swindling sleaze-ball company of my discontent.
Here are the details of the complaint I have presently filed: "I purchased an upgraded smart phone and added a $70 card for unlimited talk, text and 4 gigs of data usage. I was NOT moved on to the $70 plan printed on the card I purchased and was additionally billed for every call, text and data transfer until my previous $20 overage balance was reduced to nothing. When I spoke with their customer service, I was told that they would fix the error if I paid an additional $20. I purchased ANOTHER $30 card(the location I was at only had $15 and $30 increments) and added it to the phone. I called BACK customer service to make sure I would no longer be charged for the unlimited service I paid for. As it sits at this moment, my account says I have unlimited talk and text, BUT my data is next to empty AND the overage balance is UNDER $1. In summary: that's $70 for the plan I wasn't given, $20 for the charges I wasn't supposed to incur, and $30 for the extra money they insisted I pay to continue service."
Does anybody SEE this?!?! I PAID $70 for unlimited talk, text and 4 gigs of data, period. That should be the end of it, I should HAVE that right now and not be fighting to GET it... What I have RECEIVED is billing through $20 that should not have been touched. I then had to ADD $30 MORE and I STILL don't have data reflected on myverizon AND the dollar balance on my account is under $1. So instead of paying $70 for unlimited talk, text and 4 gigs, I have paid $120 for unlimited talk, text and ZERO data AND an almost empty overage balance.

Again: I don't start out this way. I don't TALK this way, but when I've been patient and polite on the phone for a FULL hour, and they STILL don't fix my problem, and I call back and get a robot voice telling me to go online... I'm going to vent. You see?
When I say it costs next to nothing, what I mean is that price fixing is occurring at the highest levels by financiers who have a monopoly on literally everything for sale. There's no REAL WORLD value behind the costs. That wasn't the focus of this complaint because I've fully accepted that the vast majority of society is far too fluoridated and indoctrinated to have critical thought processes. I'm sorry for mentioning it because the problem is bigger than the imaginations of anyone who will read this.
What I want to focus on is the end of the line robbery occurring in my immediate, direct experience in this moment where my account should rightfully have 4 gigs of information and $50 credit waiting for me because I paid for it. I live in the sticks. I LIKE it out here away from the metropolitan taxpayer zoo. I HAD a (removed) phone from (removed) when I moved out here and frequently wouldn't GET incoming calls. When they actually DELIVER the service I normally pay for, I'm not dissatisfied. I achieve communication. It's pretty cool... but since I've gone ahead and upgraded to a smart phone they've withheld the service I've paid for and charged me $50 for NOTHING at all. That's THEFT. Flat out.
How I handle it??? You mean by being polite on the phone while they explained to me that I would have to pay an additional $20 AFTER the $20 they falsely charged me in order to have the plan I already paid for? You mean when I went ahead and withheld every thought in my head to call them out on how messed up that is, and actually went into that store, and bought that card, and added it to my phone, and waited politely AGAIN? You mean when I discovered that not only was the issue STILL not resolved, but the balance on my account shows less than a dollar, and I tried to call back yet again only to be told to go online where NOTHING on this site puts you in contact with anyone who will actually DO anything to resolve ANY sort of issue?
I believe I have every right to be as rude as I like at this point. This is NOT how a legitimate business operates. I shouldn't even be replying to you. I shouldn't be ****** off and missing money/data as I'm here holding the receipts. I shouldn't be forced to make this whole day about hunting down a legitimate person within the company in order to collect what I paid for. There's a product on the shelf with an advertised service. I paid the money... I should have the service... and I shouldn't be charged extra money in order to fund their inability to deliver it.

  • Complete failure of PC app

This is the story of why I would not recommend the PC app to others and would instead encourage them to use steam, gamestop, or finally actually just going to the store.  It started when I installed the app and a few games.  I realized I was running out of hard drive space on my small SSD (120 GB) and wanted to install games on my other hard drive (2TB).  I contacted live support and they told me geek squad would be able to help me.  The first time I contacted geek squad was to try and figure out how to install games into a new location which lots of applications are able to do (iTunes, gamestop app, steam, etc.) and they told me that due to faulty/bad coding you aren't able to do that.  I was a little frustrated at first but it wasn't awful, and so I uninstalled the app along with the 2 15+ GB games I had.  After I tried to re install it, the PC installer kept insisting that I needed to repair the PC app program and not install it.  I contacted the geek squad a second time and this time they told me the only way to uninstall it was to do add/remove programs, which I had already done.  I did a little googling while on hold and figured out that the app has lots of hidden folders and miscellaneous folders scattered throughout my SSD. By the time the geek squad member got back on the phone I was told I needed to reinstall it and unistall it to fix the problem.  I finished doing that and it just left me where I started and didn't solve anything.  At this point I didn't want to contact them anymore due to lack of knowledge and tried to fix the problem myself by using add/remove programs and deleting all the hidden/miscellaneous files around my SSD.  I downloaded a fresh copy of the installer from the website and, much to my annoyance, it wanted to repair the application instead of reinstall it .  The worse part about it this time was that it would not let me completely reinstall the program, stating that I was missing some files or needed to locate them.  I thought this was odd because I was repairing the program so it would replace missing files and if all the files were missing it would just reinstall a fresh copy.  So now I am left with $130 of unplayable games purchased through this worthless app and would like either a refund, or hard copies of the games I tried to download to avoid this god-awful program.

This program is indeed one of the most poorly written pieces of software I've used.
I know this topic is old, but hopefully this will help a few people:
The BBY pc app installer contains an MSI (Windows Installer) package that is the cause of the issue the OP describes. The uninstaller leaves the Windows Installer package behind, and subsequent installs attempt to repair the existing package since it was never removed.
BBY PC App can be fully removed (I've done it for several friends), but it is a complex process. The directions below assume you have an understanding of Windows Explorer.
These directions are provided as-is. Use them at your own risk. They worked for me, but there's no guarantee they'll work for you.
Here's how to remove it (I wrote these directions based upon BBY pc app v3.5.1.2 from Jan 23, 2012):
    1. Open Add/Remove Programs (Programs and Features on Vista/7), and remove pc app as you would normally. You may  also want to uninstall any software downloaded through PC app.
    2. Press Win+R to open Run. Type regedit and click OK. (Editing the registry incorrectly can crash your PC and require you to reinstall Windows. Follow these steps carefully).
    3. On the left side, click the + next to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE registry key to open it. Then repeat to open SOFTWARE, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion, and finally Uninstall.
    4. Click on the first folder listed under Uninstall on the left. Look on the right side for the entry named DisplayName, and check to see if the Data is Best Buy PC App. If it is not, select the next folder under Uninstall. Continue to work down the list until you find a folder that has a DisplayName of Best Buy PC App, or until you reach the end of the list.
If you reach the end of the list without finding an entry for best buy pc app, skip to step 8.
    5. Write down the name of the folder that contains the Displayname of best buy pc app (the folder name will look something like {FBBC4667-2521-4E78-B1BD-8706F774549B}, numbers and letters might be different ). Close the Registry Editor.
    6. Press Win+R, then type the following: msiexec /i<name> SRCDIR=C:\windows\installer (replace <name> with the folder name you wrote down in step 5.) Note that there is NO SPACE between the /i and the <name>
An example that removes 3.5.1.2 is msiexec /i{FBBC4667-2521-4E78-B1BD-8706F774549B} SRCDIR=C:\windows\installer
    7. An install wizard with no graphics should appear. If you receive an error or the installer for a different program opens, double check the name of the folder from step 4. Click Next, then click the blank square next to Remove. Confirm the removal.
    8. Show hidden files if they are not already shown. To do this, open Control Panel, then select Folder Options. Select the View tab, then choose "Show Hidden Files and Folders" in the list. Click OK and close Control Panel.
Windows 7 users may not see Folder Options in control panel. If this is the case, click "Category" in the upper right corner, and select "Small Icons".
    9.
Windows XP users: Press Win+R, then type %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data Click OK
Windows Vista/7 users: Press Win+R, then type C:\ProgramData Click OK
    9. In the window that opens, look for a best buy pc app folder. If it exists, delete the entire folder.
    10. Then, look for a folder whose name starts with a curly brace (" { " symbol). If one exists, open it. Verify that best buy pc app setup.exe is inside. If it is, delete the entire folder. Close the window.
    11. Navigate to C:\Program Files in Windows explorer. If a best buy pc app folder exists, delete it. (Odds are good that this folder will not be there. The uninstall usually removes it).
    12. Press Win+R again, this time type the following and click OK:
If you have Windows XP: %userprofile%\Application Data
If you have Windows Vista or 7: %userprofile%\AppData
    13. In the window that opens, look for a best buy pc app folder. If it exists, delete the entire folder. Close the window.
    12. Restart your computer.
