Early 2006 20" iMac: Freezing During Use

Lately, I've been experiencing more frequent (sometimes as often as 3x/day) sudden total lockup situations. Only a restart via the power button works. When idle, it'll run forever, but most often, the freeze seems to happen while moving the mouse, scrolling a web page, or moving across the dock. I'm not aware of anything that's changed recently. I have checked permissions, used "repair disk" from boot DVD (no problems were found), and reset PRAM (pending results after having done that). CrashReporter shows:

Any suggestions would be appreciated, including how best to interpret logs, which ones to check, etc. I do have Apple Care, so I can take it in if necessary, but at this point, I'm not sure if it's hardware or software.
Thanks!

*Step 1* Try a different user, if problem persists then it is a deeper system issue or hardware.
*Step 2* Swap hardware (drives/keyboard/mouse etc) and/or minimise hardware
*Step 3* Run a clean up utility like Disk Warrior and see if that fixes it
*Step 4* Talk to AppleCare with whatever you have learned. It is possible to get an onsite service. I got one.
*Step 5* If the onsite doesn't fix it, ask for a replacement Mac. I got one and so far so good, I have had it now for 4 hrs and am now setting up again.
*Step "Wherever nervous"* Backup and remove all your documents and non-core software. Do a complete system carbon copy, you may want this in the near future. I keep multiple WD320 Gb portable HDs for just such purposes. They are colored so I can tell them apart.
Also have an external FW drive to boot from, you may want an emergency system with various utilities on it to work on your Mac, it can be a mirror of your existing user so that you can continue working or do a clean install at any time

  • Imac freezes during startup stops @ blue screen & have tried everything

My imac freezes during startup, it gets to blue screen and just sits. I have tried to boot from the Leopard 10.5 install disk, and just sits, can't get to log in screen. Have run the disk utility and it says disk appears to be ok, Won't startup up in safe boot, blue screen just sit. Have tried 'fsck' fix, just sits at blue screen. Have reset PRAM, I don't know want else to try. Disk utility & "fsck" says 'disk appears to be ok'. When exiting fsck, it will start the process then stops. Does anyone have any suggestions, I have not tried to reinstall 10.5 yet.
    Thanks in advance
    Paula

After reading resolutions TS1541 & other threads, I decided to try to archive & reinstall 10.5 from install disc. Well that made things worse, sometime during reinstall, system locked up, I looked at the log during install & it had been locked up about 3 hours and now I have nothing. no systems files, using Target( firewire cable) disc with my macbook, I can see I have previous system folder & a folder that say system. but Install disc does not see OS.
Do I need to take it to an apple store for repair or what. It's only 3 years old.
    please help

  • Imac freezes during start-up. Seems to be caused by Airport issue.

My Imac freezes during startup. I have tried starting it in safe mode without any luck. After the initial start sequence when it gets to this point: Airport linkup en1, the computer starts writing the same line endlessly: com.apple.launch [1] (com.apple.mDNSRsponder [2710]): posix_spawnp (“/usr/sbin/mDNSResponder”,...): No such file or directory
I am not a technician and new to Macs too. I have tried almost everything in the supportfile about freeze issues. I am not able to start the Mac in safe mode. I have repaired the disk. I have tried reinstalling the software, but this fails too.
Did a couple of changes on the timecapsule before it happened (creating a network and new security settings and backup settings) and installed Photoshop Elements 9 and did a lot of file restructuring. Left the computer open and came back to a blue screen. Since then I have been unable to start.
My macbook works fine with the changes. I am stuck - what to try now?
I need my files and they are luckily on the timecapsule, but i am not able to open the imac-bundle file on the macbook, why?
    Thanks for helping.

did a lot of file restructuring.
In Finder>Go>enter /usr/sbin do you see mDNSResponder listed there?
Try Repairing Permissions for the Volume in Disk Utility (Note: may take a long time in 10.5.8)

  • My iMac freezes when using Firefox

My iMac freezes when using Firefox. We have to restart our computer.

TutorDaddy, if this Mac is still covered by the initial warranty or under AppleCare, take it in and have it looked at. As the old label used to say, there truly are "no user serviceable parts inside." Kernel panics very usually indicate failing hardware.
I have an older iBook G4 that started developing kernel panics and like you, despite reinstalling the OS from a freshly formatted volume, they kept continuing. I looked at the crash log and saw that in each instance of panic, the last bit of code to be accessed had something to do with AirPort. Knowing that the AirPort software was at then current levels, I surmised the problem to be a bad AirPort networking card which, on that particular model of the iBook, was a very small module attached directly to the logic board. Since the computer was out of AppleCare, I broke the machine down myself (I didn't realize that there could be so many barely visible screws in one machine) and removed the offending piece of hardware. My iBook lives but without WiFi, it now sits as a more or less desktop machine needing an ethernet connection to stay connected to a network.
I do not suggest you break into your iMac. First of all, I'm guessing one would need to be able to pull off the glass and have the necessary glue to reattach it, which is not really available to us consumers. If you're feeling adventurous enough to read the crash logs from each panic, you might be able to surmise the hardware component (or badly written application or library; it can happen) that's causing the panic. If it's a software issue, remove the offending software app and see if the panics return. If it's a hardware issue, it's best to let a competent service tech qualified on Apple hardware to handle it.

After browsing through related problems in the discussions, I saw this link to a third-party web site being handed out. Perhaps you'll find it useful: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html

  • Best way to transfer data between iMac early 2006 and iMac late 2012

What is the best way to transfer data between iMac early 2006 and iMac late 2012?

HI, is this for Migrating all data ove, or just File Sharing?
What OSX version is in he older one?
Do you have any backup external drive for the older one?

  • Satellite 4080 freezes during use. Event id 5 - illegal i/o port address

I have a Satellite 4080 running windows xp sp2 which it does reasonably well. It is only used for basic word processing and Office applications. The laptop freezes during use and has to be switched off & back on again. In the event viewer there is an event id number 5 ACPI BIOS is attempting to write to an illegal IO port address. Is this connected to the problem with the laptop freezing? Microsoft as helpful as ever suggest contacting the BIOS vendor about possibly updating the BIOS. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Hello Robert
The BIOS update you can find on http://www.toshiba-tro.de/subpage/bios.html but check please the MORE INFO on the right side.
I don't know if this will help to solve the problem but you can try. Please be careful with BIOS update and read the instructions at first.

  • IMac freezes during TC backup

Since a few days my iMac (newest version running Mountain Lion) freezes during TC backups. Since TC is set to backup every hour my computer freezes every hour - the MAC wheel pops up and keeps spinning.
Once I abort the TC backup it takes about half a minute for iMac to become responsive again.
Is there a solution for this problem - of course besides turning off TC and TM.
    Thanks

The episode below started at 06.20.32 (it began when TC started backingup). I tried closing an application and launching Console - without success.
At 06.23.11 I tried stopping the backup and shutting down TC (I think it shows first at 06.23.15).
At 06.23.41 my iMac was responsive again.
The info below only covers 06.23.04 till 06.23.45 (it seems way too much data and I don't know what's useful and what isn't).
    Thanks

  • CD Jammed in early 2006 17" iMac

Not sure if this is in the right section but anywho...
I was installing Windows XP on Boot Camp on my Early 2006 iMac, and it was going fine until the screen went black and I got "Disk Error".
Now I can't eject the CD whatsoever. It comes up on the Finder and can be accessed, but when I press eject, or use terminal or startup key commands, it just makes lots of struggling sounds and gives up then just reads the disk again.
I've tried using credit cards, various small metal things to try and force the disk out, and various key commands etc.
    Any other suggestions??
    Thanks

Restart your computer and hold the left mouse button down. This will initiate a disc eject. If that fails don't try to force the disc out - take it to an authorized repair center. Sticking things into the optical drive is a good way to ruin the drive and/or disc and to void your warranty (assuming your computer is still under warranty).

  • IMac Freezes while using itunes

Hi this is the second time my new iMac freezes when i'm browsing the iTunes store.
all of the sudden the mac stops responding, what should I do to prevent this in the future?

I just got my first Apple iMac and I am loving it. I have used PC's for years and I am a little rusty on my Mac skills. When I was browsing through iTunes...looking at the Movies my computer also froze. I am not even able to do a force quit. It makes me really nervous just turn off my computer. So when you get an answer please let me know. I feel really silly calling tech support for something this silly.

  • Snow Leopard runs super slow on early 2006 (Intel) iMac

Hi. I need some advice please. I have an early 2006 iMac 20" that was running slow and I wanted to upgrade OS and main applications so I bought the SL box set. I backed up my data on a USB HDD and did a clean install, but now the system runs incredibly slowly. Genius at the Apple store ran diagnostics all day and found no problems with the HW and recommended I added another 1GB of RAM to existing 1GB. I did and system is still incredibly slow. I get the beach ball all the time and sometimes the system is completely unresponsive. Anyone else have performance issues with SL on this model iMac?

  • IMac freezes during download of a podcast or import of a CD with iTunes

Downloading a podcast or the import of a CD makes my iMac freeze quite often, at least occasionally. Sometimes iMac freezes just playing a song. I have got MacOS 10.6.8 and the latest iTunes version. I'm afraid there is a corrupted song somewhere. How can I find it?

This problem has been driving me crazy for some time. It happens when any of my podcasts finish downloading while I am watching another video podcast. The video podcast I am currently watching pauses for usually at least 30 seconds but progresses without the playback. I am running iTunes on my Macbook Pro with 2GB ram. I assumed for the longest time it was the 5400 rpm drive but I'm not sure. I hope someone has a helpful hint! TIA, Brian

  • Early 2006 Intel iMac, does not boot, randomly crashes

    Hi everyone,
So, I bought a used 2006 Core Duo Intel White iMac off of a friend earlier last year. The iMac has been running like a champ, I installed Snow Leopard on top of Leopard and it hasn't given me any problems until much recently.
I installed Bootcamp, secondary to the desire to play a little Team Fortress 2 and during the Bootcamp installation it actually randomly crashed. Weird, it's never actually done that, but since that time it would crash and would not power up for anywhere from half an hour to half a day. At first, it would only crash during Windows Vista, but now I found it crashing during OSX with the same problems powering up.
During the crashes, the computer will not respond to mashing on the power button, and sometimes, I will hear the high-pitched whine of the boot and the light in the bottom right of the iMac would go on and then crash at the gray screen. At other times, it will boot right into OSX and then crash with the same problems.
*Things I have tried:* Resetting the PRAM, resetting the PMC, deleting Windows Vista and removing the Bootcamp partition, Disk Utility on the few times the machine booted with a clean bill of health.
Results: Resetting the PMC seems to help rebooting, but does not prevent other crashes. Neither the PRAM reset or removing Windows Vista has helped with the problem.
*Things I will do:* Send the machine to Genius Bar and suck it up
Impressions: I strongly believe it to be a power supply/motherboard issue. I ran RAM tests and the RAM itself seems to not return any errors. If these are in fact the repairs I need, then it's beyond what I can actually repair on the machine, so to the Apple Store it will go.
I am however looking for any input into other people's problems like mine or any other thing I can do to test/bench the system (when it doesn't crash). I dig the machine and I thought I got a good deal, I am looking for any other insight you may provide. Also, if anyone has a good place to buy parts to test/fix Intel iMacs I am handy inside a computer, tinkered with PCs throughout my life. Thank you in advance!

    Strange,
It’s beginning to look as though we have similar iMac characteristics. Here’s a couple of other things I did that you might try. Each of these seemed to improve the stability of my Mac.
    1. One of the differences between a normal boot and a safe boot has to do with what fonts are loaded. Since my system seemed to run fine in “Safe Mode” it was suggested to me to run Font Book and verify all fonts. I did that and it found numerous (90+) minor font problems and 1 major problem. I deleted all fonts that showed any problem at all. I didn’t expect fonts to be a significant source of problems, but after doing this step and #2 and #3 below, my Mac began to behave better
    2. Over time a lot of junk builds up on your Mac – caches, languages that are loaded with applications but not needed, logs, etc., etc. There are a lot of programs that will do clean up of these files. I really don’t know which ones are best, but I came across one called “CleanMyMac” and decided to buy and download it. When I ran it, it found a ton of stuff during its Scan which I then Removed.
    3. Reset the SMC
    4. Here’s an interesting one. I came across many comments about the importance of cleaning out the air in/out ports on your computer. I have a small compressor that I used to blow through the ports on my Mac. A not-insignificant cloud of dust came out of my Mac when I did that. Any dust sitting on components will act as insulation, retard heat dissipation, and cause those components to run hotter. After doing this, I swear, iStat began showing temps 10 deg F cooler than before.
    5. I downloaded SMCFanControl. After a little trial and error, I set the minimum speeds as follows: Optical Drive fan at 1000rpm, Hard Drive fan at 1400rpm, and CPU fan at 1400rpm. This brought temps down another 10 deg. F at least.
I haven’t had a crash or hang of my system since.
Here’s the main temperature readings I’m seeing now:
    CPU A: 91 deg. F (33 deg. C)
    Graphics Processor: 93 deg. F (34 deg. C)
    Hard Drive: 96 deg. F (36 deg. C)
    Memory Controller: 93 deg. F (34 deg C)

  • IMac freezes during 10.10.1 install, needs full-on Time Machine Restore.

I failed to use Disk Utility to Verify/Repair permissions before the 10.10 -> 10.10.1 upgrade on a 27" iMac (early 2009, first 27").
The computer restarts and partway through the grey-screen with progress bar, the iMac simply, stops.
I eventually have to power down, and always the same stop.
I boot into the Recovery area, where Disk Utility Repair Permissions first said the drive was un-fixable, then ran fine and made repairs and said it was fine.
I then had to restore the entire machine from Time Machine since it WOULD NOT recover enough to boot.
Time Machine restore was amazing.  Many hours, but it restored the iMac to the previous state from the day before, including what e-mails were open.
I figured all the diagnostics had "shaken up" the drive enough to try 10.10.1 again, but the same result.  Partway through grey-screen with progress bar, permanent freeze.
    Needed 2nd Time Machine restore.
Now I'm afraid to try again.
Is that a dead sector on the hard drive?  On a system file that's never used?  So confusing.  I wish a scan could find it and mark it as unusable.
5 year old Mac drive though.  Could be getting Tired.
    Thoughts welcome.

I boot into the Recovery area, where Disk Utility Repair Permissions first said the drive was un-fixable, then ran fine and made repairs and said it was fine.
To be clear, use Disk Utility's Repair Disk function, not Repair Disk Permissions. Once it finishes, back up that disk's contents to another device, preferably two or more, and then discard it. If you are concerned about securing its contents, physically destroy it first.
A permanent repair for hard disk corruption does not exist. Firmware contained within the hard disk drive already automatically maps bad sectors "unusable" as you desire. The problem is that as a disk ages and is subject to the inevitable environmental abuse that occurs with all consumer electronics, the number of bad sectors will increase exponentially with time.
