Editing DVCPRO HD 25

Hi Guys,
Well got the HVX200 for the promo shoot and doing some test footage. Can anyone tell me why it won't do real time effects and colour correction without rendering in a 720p25 timeline?
Your help would be very much appreciated!

Hi Max,
Yeh using the latest version with the DVCPRO HD 720p25 Easy Setup
It plays the clips without hvaing to render, but everything else needs to render. Dissolves, fades etc render. And Colour correction also has to render

  • Editing DVCPRO HD 720p60 Varicam 59.94 footage for a 29.97 video

    Hi,
We're having to re-edit a video that was shot on DVCPRO HD 720p60 59.94 Varicam, but was originally dubbed to Digibeta and edited in SD at 29.97.
We've captured the orginal DVCPRO HD Tapes. My question is what is the best workflow to get a final product of a HD video at 29.97 frames?
Should my sequence be edited at 720p60 59.94 frames, and then the final video converted to 29.97?
    Should I edit in a DVCPRO 720p60 sequence with a 29.97 timebase?
Or should I batch convert all the source material to 29.97 fps beforehand?
I checked out the DVCPRO HD Frame Rate Converter, but this makes new clips without the audio, which I find ridiculous.
This project may also be edited by someone on a 1.6GHz G4 with FCP 4.5 (I shudder at the thought), so dropping the clips into a 29.97 timeline may not be an option.
Thanks in advance for any tips on a DVCPRO HD workflow.

Edit DVCPRO HD 720p at 59.94. Output via an HD capture card to 29.97. You need to go to Digibeta again, right?

OK...that is a solid version of FCP, and it supports DVCPRO HD. How will you output?

  • Possible to edit DVCPro HD footage in iMovie?

I'm shooting DVCPro HD on a Panasonic HPX170.  My friend asked me to shoot and deliver footage to be edited in iMovie, so he can edit it himself.  Is this possible?  If so, please list the necessary steps.

iMovie doesn't work with DVCPRO HD...as that is a professional format and iMovie is a consumer app. If you capture it with FCP, you will have to then import all the footage into iMovie on your end and give him that.  The footage will be converted to Apple Intermediate Codec.  And note that what they do in iMovie, stays in iMovie.  They will not be able to get you anything that will allow you to online/finish in FCP.  It will have to stay in iMovie.
Capture in FCP (tutorial: <http://library.creativecow.net/ross_shane/tapeless-workflow_fcp-7/1)...then open iMovie and import all the footage.  Make sure you direct iMovie to import onto an external drive.  How?  No clue...I don't use imovie.

  • How edit DVCPro HD and HDV footage in the same multi-clip project?

    Dear All
I am to edit a music video material shot with two cameras. I received the footage as .mov files, but one file is a DVCPro HD 1080i50 codec and the other is a HDV 1080i50 codec. - It seems the music concert was recorded on two different cameras (I guess one was Panasonic the other Sony).
How can I edit the music video using multi-clip editing? - I guess I will have to reconvert one of the footage-format to match the other format. If so, which conversion assures the best quality: from DVCPro HD to HDV or vice versa?
Or should I ask for the original tapes and then import all as a HDV codec (is that possible with the DVCPro?)?
I have never worked with the DVCPro codec before. So any links further explanations and tutorials are appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    Hynek

    Dear Tom
Thank you for the tip. I converted the DVCPro footage into a HDV file and it looks good. The new file is only 9BG compared to the DVCPro file of 39GB. Quite surprising that such a down-conversion still results in a rather good quality.

  • Can my computer handle editing DVCPRO 1080?

Hi. Im currently editing a feature length film. In the editing room, im currently set up with a Mac Pro running 2 2.66 Ghz Dual-Core Intel Xeon processors, with 2gb or ram, and a Aja Kona Card ran to an HD monitor.
I'd like to take my work home with me. I have 3TBs of footage spread across two external 5 bay enclosures. My set up at home is out of date. I have a 1.5 ghz Powerbook G4, and a Dual 1 ghz G4 tower.
I looked into getting a sata card for my powerbook, but im pretty sure it can't handle it. Is there anything i can do, or should just not take the work home?
    Thanks guys for any input.

there is 2gigs of ram in my powerbook G4. there is also 2 gigs of ram in my Dual 1ghz G4 PowerPC.

  • Editing DVCPro HD Without Having to Render

    Hey All,
I'm editing a project I shot with the Panasonic HVX-200 in 720 24p...I've imported the footage successfully onto FCP 5, but I have to render the footage every time I place it into my sequence.
Is there a way around this? This is my first time editing HD, so it might be a problem with my settings, but I think I've done that correctly...
Any help/advice would be much appreciated...

Click on your timeline and press APPLE-0 (zero) and see what your presets are. Typically if you create a new project, THEN choose an Easy Setup, the Sequence 1 will have the old settings. Creating a new sequence after you choose an easy setup is a good trick.
Plus...if your footage is 720p24 but 24 over 60 (59.94 fps) then choosing a 720p24 easy setup won't work for you, as it is 23.98. Look at your clips settings.

  • Loose quality with FCP export with no editing / DVCPRO HD

    Hi.
I have a big problem with my FCP
ANY kind of video exported from FCP using same settings in timeline & export as in source,
is worst then source. Even with no editing.
    Example.
I simply take source video to timeline then export it with EXPORT / QUICK TIME MOVIE
and the exported file has visible bigger pixels.
( with 'export using QT conversion' / same settings / the same effect )
    please help.

wow it's not so visible with those jpgs. sorry.
I can upload some tiff's if U would like to see it.
But believe me, the quality is ... different

If you are watching it in Quicktime, make sure you have the high quality setting checked. Apple J, video track, etc..

  • DVCPRO HD 720P24

So, I am shooting in DVCPRO HD 720P24 (Drop Frame) and need to output to DVCPRO 50 (Non Drop Frame).
My thoughts are, I will not remove the pull down, edit in a 720 60P sequence, then drop it into a DVCPRO 50 Drop Frame sequence. Is there any problem with that?

So, I am shooting in DVCPRO HD 720P24 (Drop Frame)
DVCPRO HD 720p24 is a NON-DROP format. DVCPRO 50 is typcially a drop frame format.
and need to output to DVCPRO 50 (Non Drop Frame)...edit in a 720 60P sequence, then drop it into a DVCPRO 50 Drop Frame sequence.
Sorry, a bit confused here. Which is it? Drop frame or non-drop DVCPRO 50 sequence you are looking for?
But there are no problems with editing DVCPRO HD and putting it into a DVCPRO 50 sequence for output. My suggestion is to export a Quicktime Movie (reference, not self contained) then import that and drop it into the DVCPRO 50 sequence, render then output.

  • What is the best codec to edit footage?

I feel this may be a simple question. I have DVCPROHD footage at 1080p. What is the most efficient way to import my .mov files into Final Cut and which codec should I use when I edit?
Currently, I've been edited in the DVCPROHD format and I use a lot of graphic images in my video. Maybe another question I have is if I should be editing in 720 or 1080? Most of my videos are for the web and I find that when I import my images, I have to scale them up to fit in the frame which causes a drop in quality.
Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

If you shot DVCPRO HD at 1080p, then you should edit DVCPRO HD 1080p. If you have images, compose them to fit your frame.
You can go to 720p, but then you have encode time added to your process. So if you want 720p, why not shoot 720p?

  • DVCPRO-HD on MBP ?

    Hi,
I usually work on the fcp system where I work. I have a mbp and I am going to be cutting a piece being shot on the panasonic HDX900 in DVCPRO-HD, 720p24. We will rent the AJ1400 to digitize. I am wondering if my mbp will be able to handle the DvcPro Hd, an external monitor and a client monitor.
It was recommended to me to use a Canopus external AV converter for the client monitor hookup.
Only hooking up the client monitor after digitizing and unhooking the deck.
Also would like recommendations for the PCI card and external drive for media. I have a G tech 500gig drive with 300 gig free. Could be as much as 10 hours of ftg.
What do you think, can my mbp handle it, or am I pipe dreaming?
Thank you so much for your time!

I edit DVCPRO HD on my Powerbook G4...so your MBP is more than adequate. But you cannot use that Canopus box...that works for DV only. You need a device capable of outputting an HD signal. Now, you can connect an external monitor via the extra DVI port you have, that takes care of your monitor, but for client monitoring, you need something like the AJA I/O HD, or Matrox MXO, or MOTU V3HD. The cheapest option of the three is the MXO, as it is output only. But the great thing about it is the ability for it to turn an Apple 23" display into a color correction monitor. Or, you can route a monitor thru this as a computer monitor, and then connect an HD client monitor to it via component or with a DVI to HDMI converter.
The AJA I/O HD is great because it injests and outputs.
You can use a firewire 800 drive for the media, like a G-Raid (G-Tech) or FirewireVR (Caldigit). But I prefer the eSATA Raid from Caldigit, S2VR Duo. And it connects to the MBP via an express34 connector, which Caldigit also makes.
DVCPRO HD is a very easy codec to deal with. Amazingly so.

  • DVCPRO HD format question

    Hello all Finalcutters,
So I've been cutting a lot of DVCPRO HD footage, usually for finishing in standard definition NTSC. I'm enjoying great success, but I note that when I edit DVCPRO HD footage onto an NTSC timeline, two things:
    1. The clip defaults to resize itself to letterbox on the screen. This is great when I want that, but for this project I'd rather the footage just stay at 100% size and fill the screen. Can't find a way to make this happen automatically, and I'm a little tired of manually resizing everything just to get it to fill out a 4 x 3 aspect ratio.
    2. I'm puzzled - when I cut a DVCPRO HD clip at 100% on an NTSC timeline, I actually have to size it to 102% to fill the screen from top to bottom. Where'd those extra 195 lines of vertical resolution go? I notice that the distortion tab is set to -50.
    Any clues?

I realize I have to resize my footage in the workflow I've chosen, I'm fine with that, and my system is fast enough to handle it efficiently.
My spot is NTSC, always will be, so I feel it's appropriate for me to edit in that format, so we can all see the 4 x 3 aspect ratio and compose scenes accordingly.
I'm not puzzled by resizing - what bothers me is why does a 100% size 960 x 720 pixel DVCPRO HD frame just barely fill (vertically) a 720x486 pixel NTSC frame, when, counting pixels, it should be somewhat taller?
My material looks correct in every other way, seems correctly aspected, not squished or anything.

  • Does Premiere Elements support DVCPRO-HD? How do I ingest and work with HD-footage from HVX-200?

    Hi there,
I work with Premiere Elements 11 on a windows PC, and I try to ingest HD-footage from Panasonic HVX-200 Camcorder. Premiere Elements only recognizes thumbnails, but not the footage itself? What do I have to do? Or does Elements only support SD-footage? Do I have to install DVCPRO-HD Codec? Where do I get it then?
Thanks for your help!, yours Mike

    Welcome to the forum.
PrE does support HD material, just not all of it.
With DVCPRO HD on P2 media, I am not sure that you will be able to work directly with the media files from your Panasonic in PrE. This is the list of supported formats: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/premiereelements/using/WSeffff8bffc802084-1665492e133c9c19956- 8000.html#WS300DE01D-F057-4639-96D1-F99EEE163C24
PrPro can Import and edit DVCPRO HD on P2 media. The Panasonic P2, along with its metadata is supported: http://www.adobe.com/products/premiere/extend.html

  • Matrox Axio LE and DVCPRO HD

Is anyone editing DVCPRO HD with the Axio LE system. How do you like the video quality when you get it out to standard DVD?
    Thanks,
    Mark Voigt

I think Adobe has something going with Dolby.  There isn't any reason we couldn't produce an MPEG2-ts with PCM audio multiplexed in, as you were once able to do so in CS2.
While this does not address any lack of PCM in MPEG, the "encoder" that you are talking about is the Minnetonka SurCode DD 5.1 SS encoder. It is licensed through Dolby labs, but the "deal" is with Minnetonka Audio. Actually, if one purchases that encoder for DD 5.1 SS, they get a better price by doing it from PrPro vs doing so from the Minnetonka Web site.
One should still be able to Export as AC3 (stereo) from PrPro without having to bother with the SurCode encoder. As I do not have CS3, I cannot confirm this, but the SurCode is just for DD 5.1 SS Audio.
Also, as most of my Projects are DD 5.1 SS (using the SurCode plug-in), I have not even tried to multiplex to PCM/WAV, so cannot comment on that end.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Dvcpro hd and Macbook pro intel duo core

Hello friends, I have MBP 15" duo core 2ghz ,2gb ram, can i edit dvcpro hd material in fcp studio. i mean will my MBP be able to take the load i plan to use express card, e-sata drives, or do i have to transcode it to dv format. it will be only 1 layer track.

If you use a e-sata express card with a external e-sata HD, then you will have enough performance. A e-sata drive will be just as fast as your internal drive.
Maybe if you have a nice 3.5 inch e-sata HD you will have better performace then the internal 2.5 inch laptop HD.

  • Clips stretched in Canvas view with same footage from previous sequence

I created a 1 minute video to play on a laptop that I've edited down to 30 seconds. This 30 second version will be playing on a television, so I changed the Sequence Presets to "DV NTSC 48Hz" and the QuickTime video settings from "Photo -JPEG" (since I'm using still shots in the video) back to "DV/DVPRO NTSC."
I'm using the exact same clips and essentially duplicated the previous sequence and edited down the clips. But for some reason, the clips appeared stretched in the Canvas with black bars on either side, and it exports the same way as a Quicktime file. I checked the Sequence settings on both the 1 minute and 30 sequence versions, and they are identical. Any idea why the clips would all of a sudden stretch and how to resolve it?
    Thanks!

Still images within the sequence are Photo JPEG Quicktime files
Why? FCP can read actual picture files. Just curious. PhotoJPEG at 75%?
so I changed the Sequence Presets to "DV NTSC 48Hz" and the QuickTime video settings from "Photo -JPEG" (since I'm using still shots in the video) back to "DV/DVPRO NTSC."
What was the sequence setting before? Why did you use that setting if your footage was DV?
OK...try this. Explain your workflow. What did you start out with as your settings? Why did you do this? What was your intended workflow?
If you put a DV file into a sequence setting of anything other than DV, the file will adjust to meet those parameters. For example, I edit DVCPRO HD 720p at 960x720. When I drop a DV file into the sequence, it will scale up to 150% so that it fits full screen (with black bars on left and right...200% makes it fill the screen). I have adjusted the settings on the clip.
Now, if I adjusted the SEQUENCE settings, the clip settings remain the same...still 150%...so they will appear large or distorted. You then need to fix each clip until it is right with the sequence. Or fix one and then copy and paste the attributes to the other.
Still, I don't understand why you were in a different preset to begin with. Was the first clip you added to the sequence a PHOTO JPEG still, so the settings adjusted to that?
