Editing overlayed clips

When overlaying clips, how do I delete sections of both clips at same time (to avoid ruining the alignment of the person in one clip and whats happening in the video in the second clip)?
iMovie '11

or perhaps a better way to word this is: is there a way to join to clips after you've overlayed them so editing applies to both clips?

  • Transitions created using Canvas Edit overlay don't require handles?

I have a question about creating transitions.
First, let me explain how I got the clips I'm using, because this might be important.
I used Capture Now to import 60 minutes of DV, resulting in one long clip. Next, I used Mark>DV Start/Stop Detect to mark the different scenes in the captured clip. Finally, I selected all the marked scenes and chose Modify>Make Subclip. This is the procedure described in Lisa Brenneis' Final Cut Express HD for Mac OS X Visual Quickstart Guide.
Now to start assembling my sequence, with occasional transitions between subclips.
    (1) I drag the first subclip to the timeline. So far, so good.
    (2) I drag the next subclip to the Canvas, which changes to show the Canvas Edit overlay. I drop the subclip on the Insert>With Transition. The second subclip is added to the timeline, complete with transition between the first and second subclips.
    (3) Next, I drag the next subclip to the Canvas, and drop it on Insert (without transition) and it is added to the sequence. I decided I wanted a transition after all, so I select the edit point between the second and third subclip and chose a transition. However, I get the error message, "Insufficient content for edit."
If I check the clips in the viewer, the In and Out points for ALL the subclips are at the outside ends of the clip (the whole subclip is between the In and Out points). There are no handles, as far as I understand the concept.
I have read in these forums, to create a transition, you have to have handles outside the In and Out points of the clip. It appears that all of these subclips have no handles. Why, then, can I make a transition when dropping a given clip on the Canvas Edit overlay? Why doesn't it work when the clip is put in the timeline first?
I'm just transitioning (no pun intended) from iMovie to FCE and I'm trying to get to the point where making transitions in FCE is as easy as it was in iMovie. Using the Canvas Edit overlay seems to be a quick and easy way to create a transition without worrying about handles and In and Out points, but if I want to add a transition after the clip is in the sequence, I'm out of luck.
    Any help is appreciated.

I always insert transitions in the Timeline and trim
the ends of the clips with the Razor Blade tool - but
there are lots of other ways.
I haven't learned about the Razor Blade tool yet, but I'm wondering if that tool or any other tool will let you trim the ends of a clip by exactly a certain number of frames (15 for a 1 second transition). If I could do that quickly with the two clips, that would make the process easier.
    Most professionals/skilled amateurs don't find
trimming clips a problem because they very rarely use
all their footage - most clips will have unnecessary
material at each end, or even in the middle! It's
quite normal to use only 10% of what was shot.
I suspect that is true, but right now I have two main tasks: (1) I'm archiving all the DV of my kids, unedited, to disk for later editing, so I'm capturing all of it, without selecting which footage to save, and (2) I occasionally make a quick movie of a birthday or some special event, with emphasis on quick. I'm not yet accustomed to trimming clips for transitions, and maybe iMovie has given me the bad habit of using clips too often in their entirety.
Maybe the quickest way to deal with your dodgy clip
would be to highlight it and press Delete. Then just
drag it again from the Browser into the Canvas and
drop it on Insert with Transition.
Yes, that would work unless I decide to use a transition other than the default. And as Mr. Wolski noted in his post, I'm actually only getting 1/2 a transition (end of edit).
Thanks to all for their contributions. I hope your responses will help me further develop my rudimentary beginner's skills in FCE.

  • How can I edit multiple clips with different frame rates on the same timeline

how can I edit multiple clips with different frame rates on the same timeline

You do not want to edit material from different frame rates on one timeline. You CAN do this, but it is a very bad idea - and this is why.
Once you establish the sequence frame rate - lets say it is PAL material at 25fps, any material that you drop into the sequence other than 25 fps will have to be changed to play at 25 fps. If the material you add is NTSC (29.97), FCP will DROP 5 frames per sec to bring the frame rate down to 25 fps. Which 5 get thrown away? Every 6th one. This yields a funky cadence that becomes even more complex as as there are also interlaced fields (DV/NTSC is an interlaced format). Oh, and by the way, the image sizes are different as well. DV/PAL has 576 lines of resolution and DV/NTSC has 480. FCP has to scale up the NTSC to fit the PAL frame.
You do not want FCP adjusting these things on the fly. You want to do a thoughtful (and time consuming) conversion so that you end up with all your material in one format with the best possible image from the conversion process. Compressor can do an adequate job with Frame Controls turned on. The Natress Standards Conversion FCP plugin is another way to go. A third option is to find a post house that can do the conversion for you using a hardware based process.
The good news is, once everything is in the same format, editing it will be painless and the output process very quick.
Whatever frame rate/ image size you select, I'd suggest using ProRes for the codec. It is 4:2:2 color and will withstand color correction and composting with much more grace than any variant of DV based codecs.
    Have fun.

  • How to mute ALL audio in one single go in an edited multicam clip?

    Hi there
I'm having to replace some audio in an already edited multicam clip. (there are mulitple audio parts I'm replacing by the way)
How can I mute ALL of the audio in one go, as I have about 400 cuts and am currently having to mute one by one per cut.
    thanks

Easy. Select them all. In the inspector, click the Audio tab. Under "Channel configuration", uncheck the box which would say something like "400 selected clips".

  • How to send FCP edited audio clips for processing in Soundtrack?

    Hello
How do I send just the edited audio clips from hour long files to be processed in Soundtrack from Final Cut?
I need help as I'm trying to adjust some edited audio clips in Soundtrack Pro but when I send them from FCP to Soundtrack - it opens the whole original audio file and then any adjustments I apply in Soundtrack are being processed over the whole audio file not just the short edited audio clip that I want to adjust.
Normally I don't mind as my scenes are usually short and Soundtrack analysis over the whole scenes audio is usually desirable, but this projects files have been transfered from tapes as hour long AVI files (all the tapes clips transfered into one hour long files) and every FCP edited audio clip I send is being treated as an hour long audio file in Soundtrack.
I'm sure there's a simple answer for settings but I haven't been able to find it.  Any advice appreciated.

Thanks Javi, my sequence is an hour and half duration so what I'm trying to do is save processing time in Soundtrack by just processing adjustments on the few audio clips that need processing.
I have set Soundtrack to open referenced audio only and with 5 sec in and out handles, but it still imports the whole original audio file into Soundtrack timeline upto the selected clip, I then double click in Soundtrack on the clip in brackets, and it then selects just the audio clip I want to adjust, then Soundtrack will just process on the edited clip but when I 'render to action' it seems to apply changes to whole original audio file - taking longer than I want.... frustrating
Also the sound always sounds very different in FCP than Soundtrack even after 'rendering to action' and rendering in FCP... this is not the easy workflow I expect from such expensive software programs, I understood that they work together in a fully integrated way, what's the problem! This is wasting my precious time and preventing me from editing not helping me, this is a common problem and yet I can find no help in the user manual - I'm not impressed!

  • How to edit a clip in a multicam sequence (CS6)?

I am using Premiere CS6 on Mac, I have a multicam sequence set up (2 cam).
I just want to color correct cam 2 to match cam 1 and I cannot figure it out. Everything I try applies the correction to the entire sequence.
If someone can provide exact steps to apply color correction to one clip in the sequence only (it's just brightness/contract, nothing complicated), so that it's reflected in the multicam sequence I'd be grateful. Even a link to a tutorial would be good as I cannot seem to find it online (almost everything points to CC which I don't use and is totally different than CS6).
    Please help!

Ok, I finally figured it out, no thanks to Adobe's crap "Help" system, which is missing MANY steps...
    1. Right-click the Multi-Camera Source Sequence in the Project tab (NOT the multicam sequence you're editing). It's the one with the green/blue lines perfectly lined up.
    2. Choose Open in Timeline.
    3. In the Timeline, make the edits you want to the clip you want (in this case, Brightness/Contrast on clip 2)
    4. Go to Window > Multi-Camera Monitor
    5. You'll see your source clips stacked in the window, and you can fine tune from here.
    6. Click on the Multi-Camera Sequence you're editing in the Timeline, and the Monitor should update to reflect your changes.
You can toggle back and forth between these sequences in the timeline, adjusting as you need.
This was incredibly easy for me to document, I really fail to understand why the Help file couldn't be bothered. It's completely missing things like what the difference is between the source multicam sequence and the program multicam sequence, how to edit a clip in your multicam sequence, and how the multicam monitor works. Really pisspoor documentation, but at this point, I don't expect anything else from Adobe.

How do I move clips in one pane of iMove (10.0.3) into the timeline?  iMovie somehow doesn't realize I'm trying to edit the clips.

    Try this:
Select a small portion of the clip in the event (Above the timeline)
Click and hold and drag that section into the timeline, it should snap into place but if you drag it above another clip, it will not replace it but will be placed on top and the sound from the other clip will still play. Also this will allow you to use Blue/Green screen modes as well as picture in picture.
The best way is to drag it to the far right

For the first question: place one video on top of the other, as a connected clip. Change the size and position as you wish.
You have many questions that suggest you are very unfamiliar with the application. I think you'd be well served by going through a few online tutorials. All the things you ask are easy and fun to do in FCP X. It is best to learn by seeing it done. Look at rippletraining.com, izzyvideo.com, and others. I am sure you'll find that it will be time well spent.

Legacy FCP has Revert Project to return to the last saved version, and it has Restore Project to go back to one of the autosaved versions. The maximum number of undo's can be set in user preferences. A lot different than X.

  • Editing multicam clips - where is proxy playback option?

Whenever I have been editing Mutlicam clips, I would always choose the "Proxy" option in playback as my media is stored on an external drive.  If i didn't, it just wouldn't play smoothy.
After updating I can't seem to find the option to choose proxy and the clips dont play smoothly, playback jerks after a second or two.

Any ideas? If it goes to the trouble of creating proxy media (and the proxy files are indeed still where they should be) - surely there should be a way of using them?
Also - can anyone settle an argument: If a project is edited in 'proxy playback', does that need to be switched off to export in full quality?
I used to think it did, but not sure at all now with 10.1.
    (2011 2.7 i5 27" iMac)

Ah! Found it in the top right menu!
Selected 'Proxy' and was greeted with the familiar 'beachball of non response'.
Forced quit as usual and when I relaunched I was back editing in Proxy land!
All is smooth and lovely again!
Now, I wonder if i need to switch it back to get full quality export?

  • How to save an edited viceo clip in premier elements 11 to my organizer (windows 07)?

How to save an edited video clip in premier elements to my organizer so that I can add teh edited video clip to my slide show on windows 7 operating system?

This is not Adobe. We are Premiere Elements users trying to help other Premiere Elements users with their Premiere Elements workflows. Under those conditions, only Adobe may have the opportunity to access your computer in troubleshooting session between you and them. You can use the following link to contact Adobe via its Adobe Chat.
    http://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html?product=premiere-elements&topic=using-my-product-or-se rvice
When the link opens, click on the statement "I still need help" to bring up Adobe Chat.
I have no idea if they will charge you a fee for the service ($40 US dollar/hour). It might not even help you (fee or no fee) because you do not have the latest version of Premiere Elements.
What you ask is easy enough. Let me try again with a step by step to see if we can get this working for you in principle and then fine tune the details.
    1. Export your Timeline to a file, using Publish+Share/Computer and then one of the choices
Adobe Flash Video, MPEG, AVCHD, AVI, Windows Media, QuickTime, Image, Audio. I do not know what your project settings are, but I am going to guess at NTSC/AVCHD/Full HD1080i30. That would represent 1920 x 1080 @ 29.97 interlaced frames per second.
The following is going to be a mini test run in principle so we will cut to the core and overlook some things.
    Go to Publish + Share/Computer/AVCHD/ and set Presets = MP4 - H.264 1920 x 1080p30.
Note that there is a field for Save In: near where you set Presets. Set the Save In for Libraries/Documents not C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe  Premiere Elements 11. Keep out of the Program Files for matters such as these.
Go to the Elements Organizer 12 File Menu/Get Photos and Videos/From Files and Folders and then browse to and select your MP4 file that you have saved in Libraries/Documents.
You now should have your video represented in the Elements Organizer 12 with a thumbnail.
Please let us know if that works for you. If not, then please let us know where you need supplemental help to get the task completed. I will re-write if necessary.
We will be watching for your results.
    Thank you.
    ATR
Add On...A little side note for later...If you took your file saved to the computer hard drive and imported that back into Premiere Elements with Premiere Elements' Add Media/Files and Folders, you would get
    a. the file imported into a new project
    but also
    b. a copy of the file automatically placed in the Elements Organizer 12.
If the ideas seem overwhelming, please take the steps on one at a time and follow exactly what is written. You should do fine.

Hey, I'm having the exact same problem.
I just got my Macbook Pro and I tried to partition/install windows xp the first day I got it. After successfully partitioning my HD, the 50GB partition didn't show up while trying to install the windows platform.
To be a bit more specific, it doesn't even show up in my startup disk in the system preferences menu (if that's any help?)
So after about a week of abandoning my Macbook and going back to my PC I went to the Apple store and someone from the genius bar just told me to reformat the entire thing...so that's what I did and I'm still having the same problem.
    Any advice Lyssa?

coming to my question, timeline settings are:
as it is a commercial promo that must be projected in a multiplex cinema, the 2K format is needed.
I've heard about transcoding services, and they are very expensive.
so i'm looking if there is a way to do everything by fcp.
the project will be delivered as SD DVD for archive pourposes and as a single file for the projection or eventually transconding.

  • IMovie won't edit my clip

Hi. I'm using Mac OS 10.4.8, and iMovie HD 5..0.2. I have a clip in my movie which is approximately 872MB long. I have been trying to edit it down to just a few seconds long, so I can use it in a Gee Three Slick 6 transition...Vid Motion. I want to superimpose it over a different clip. I edit the clip to just a few seconds long and when I try to use it in the Gee Three transition, the clip is still in its entire pre-edited 872MB length, even though the correctly edited version is in my clip viewer. And when I try to drag this correctly edited clip onto my desktop, somehow all 872MB gets dragged, and I find the clip is the original unedited length. Even it's information shows it's 872MB long. Any ideas on how I can fix this would be greatly apprreciated

... after editing the clip, I would select it in timeline, choose export/Quicktime/FullQuality (no loss of quality...) and 'selected clips only' and export that edited scene.. now, you have a single-solid file, you could re-import or use with that plug-in ..
