Editing stills with motion effects, performance questions.

I am editing a video in FCE that consists solely of still photos.
I am creating motion effects (pans and pullbacks, etc) and dissolve
transitions, and overlaying titles. It will be played back on dvd
on a 16:9 monitor (standard dvd,not blueray hi-def). Some questions:
What is the FCE best setup to use for best image quality: DV-NTSC?
DV-NTSC Anamorphic? or is it HDV-1080i or 720p30 even though it
won't be played back as hi-def?
How do best avoid squiggly line problem with pan moves etc?
On my G-5, 2gb RAM, single processor machine I seem to be having
performance problems with playback: slow to render, dropping frames, etc
Thanks for any help!

Excellent summary MacDLS, thanks for the contribution.
A lot of the photos I've taken on my camera are 3072 X 2304 (resolution 314) .jpegs.
I've heard it said that jpegs aren't the best format for Motion, since they're a compressed format.
If you're happy with the jpegs, Motion will be, too.
My typical project could either be 1280 X 720 or SD. I like the photo to be a lot bigger than the
canvas size, so I have room to do crops and grows, and the like. Is there a maximum dimension
that I should be working with?
Yes and no. Your originals are 7,000,000 pixels. Your video working space only displays about 950,000 pixels at any single instant.
At that project size, your stills are almost 700% larger than the frame. This will tax any system as you add more stills. 150% is more realistic in terms of processing overhead and I try to only import HUGE images that I know are going to be tightly cropped by zooming in. You need to understand that an 1300x800 section of your original is as far as you can zoom in , the pixels will be 100% in size. If you zoom in further, all you get are bigger pixels. The trade off you make is that if you zoom way out on your source image, you've thrown away 75% of its content to scale it to fit the video format; you lose much much more if you go to SD.
Finally, the manual says that d.p.i doesn't matter in Motion, so does this mean that it's worth
actually exporting my 300 dpi photos to 72 dpi before working with them in Motion?
Don't confuse DPI with resolution. Your video screen will only show about 900,000 pixels in HD and about 350,000 pixels in SD totally regardless of how many pixels there are in your original.

  • MBP with 27" Display performance question

I'm looking for advice regarding improving the performance, if possible, of my  Macbook Pro and new 27'' Apple display combination.  I'm using a 13" Macbook Pro 2.53Ghz with 4GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics card and I have 114GB of the 250GB of HD space available.  What I'm really wondering is is this enough spec to run the 27" display easily.  Apple says it is… and it does work, but I suspect that I'm working at the limit of what my MCB is capable of.  My main applications are Photoshop CS5 with Camera RAW and Bridge.  Everything works but I sometimes get lock ups and things are basically a bit jerky.  Is the bottle neck my 2.53Ghz processor or the graphics card?  I have experimented with the Open GL settings in Photoshop and tried closing all unused applications.  Does anyone have any suggestions for tuning things and is there a feasible upgrade for the graphics card if such a thing would make a difference?  I have recently started working with 21mb RAW files which I realise isn't helping.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.
    Matt.

I just added a gorgeous LCD 24" to my MBP setup (the G5 is not Happy) The answer to your question is yes. Just go into Display Preferences and drag the menu bar over to the the 24 this will make the 24 the Primary Display and the MBP the secondary when connected.

  • Dynamic link with After Effects workflow questions... (exporting from PPro)

    I have CS5 Master on Win7 x64 pc
I have a Premiere sequence with an AE linked comp in it...
If I am using proxies (created at high quality, not low) or pre-renders (in AE comp), would that have any affect on render/export times in Premiere Pro (or Adobe Media Encoder)?
What is the best workflow for having AE comps in Premiere to maximize export times in PPro?
    Thanks all!

Umm... sure? To be perfectly honest, I've never tried it!
As it is, I don't think that's the case; you can set a post-render action in AE to import the rendered file back into your project, but I don't think there's an automatic replacement or addition to the existing comp. You'd have to do that manually. But given that, if you're already rendering out a finished comp, why not just import it into Premiere Pro and forget about the Dynamic Link?
A proxy in AE is essentially a low-resolution version of a footage item, not a finished comp. So short of doing a bait-and-switch where you build your comp, render it out of AE, import the rendered file back in, and put it as a layer into the finished comp (on top, presumably, since that will basically null the rendering of the other layers below), I don't believe there is a more straightforward workflow.

  • Still image with motion has flicker pulsating problem

    I use FCP 5.0.4
I have read the many threads about this subject and am still not able to succeed in getting rid of the flicker/pulsating in a still image with motion.
I would say about 25% of the stills with motion have the jitters; all the rest look great.
The first thing I tried was
    Effects:Video Filters:Video:Field Shift:none
    as well as
Effects:Video Filters:Video:Flicker Filter min, med, and max.
Maybe 5% were corrected with this, but the other 20% still had the jitters even after using a combination of the above or by themselves.
I just burned a test DVD using a variety of the persistently jittery stills from my current project and although the jitters change a bit, they were still there so all of these failed:
    1. Effects:Video Filters:Video:De-interlace Upper (odd)
    2. Effects:Video Filters:Video:De-interlace Flicker Filter minimal
    3. Effects:Video Filters:Video:De-interlace Flicker Filter max
    4. Effects:Video Filters:Color Correction:Broadcast Safe conservative 115
    5. Effects:Video Filters:Video:Flicker Filter max
    6. All the tricks together which means
Effects:Video Filters:Video:De-interlace set at Upper (odd)
    Effects:Video Filters:Video:Flicker Filter max
    Effects:Video Filters:Video:Shift Fields: none
    Effects:Video Filters:Color Correction:Broadcast Safe conservative 115
I know this issue has been kicked around a lot and i know some folks are not happy that it has to be kicked around at all. But I am doing something wrong because my DVDs look very un-PRO. Would anyone like to talk me through this nightmare preferably with as many details as possible since I am obviously missing something critical.
    Thanks in advance.

There is no 'secret formula'. It just takes thinking through the issues.
    1. Set the image size for each image that makes sense within the context of your project. Going significantly larger than the displayed area of that image (including movement) is just asking FCP to do additional work to resize the image. FCP is less sophisticated at resizing images than Photoshop. Use Photoshop and your planning of the movie to get the images to the appropriate size.
    2. Wasted effort and totally irrelevant- you could set it to 7200 dpi if it makes you feel better.
    3. Good idea - be sure to knock down areas of pure or very bright white. These are the elements that will give you the most trouble.
    4. Don't do this unless you want to throw away HALF the picture information. Deinterlace deletes half the picture and then photoshop recreates it through interpolation of the remaining half of the picture. Why do this?
    5. Make your determination based on what works. If you have properly exposed and sized the material, the need to blur is greatly reduced. ONLY do it on the images that need it. Why degrade every image if you do not need to do so?
    6. See number 5
    7. Lay out your time line early, view the work on an external broadcast monitor and only mess about with the images that require it.
In the psycho business they have term for much of the referenced post - it's called superstitious behavior. Basically it comes down to "It worked before so we recommend it to everyone without regard to their situation" ... here's another example:
Many years ago in my architecture practice, we had one of the early 512k macs (upgraded from the 128k!) I needed to show one of the interns how to create a project budget spread sheet in Excel. Inadvertently I clicked on Word, said "oops", closed it and opened Excel and we went to work.
A week later I was walking by the computer and overheard the same intern explaining how to work with Excel to another architect. "First you open Word, close it, THEN you open Excel", she explained. When asked by her 'trainee', why do you have to open Word first, wouldn't it just be easier to simply open Excel? Her answer was just perfect, "Well, it works every time, what's wrong with that?" so it goes ...
    good luck with your project.

  • Anyone else haveing issues where Motion 5 performs worse than Motion 4?

I'm having an issue where even simple particle emitters playback slowly.  I can create the same simple effect in 4 and it plays back in real time.
I even saved a test file in 4 (which ran real time), and when I open it in 5 it plays back slower.  What gives?

I´m having a strange issues with Motion 5 performance:
    In my iMac 2010 (i3 @ 3,06 ghz, Radeon 4670 256 mb and 8 gb) Motion 5 is about 20-25% faster than Motion 4.
For example, when rendering the PulseHD Open Motion 4 takes 2:30 mins and Motion 5 takes 2:00 mins.
The strange results come from my Macbook Pro 2010 (i5 @ 2,4 ghz, Geforce GT 330m and 8 gb also):
With the same template this computer takes 3:20 mins in Motion 4 and about 6:30 mins in Motion 5!!!! So near the double.
Even more strange: if I make a ram preview in Motion 5 with this same template and settings that I used in the final render it only takes 2:51 mins and Motion 4 is slower, because it takes 3:25 mins!!!!!!
I forgot to say that in all the cases the render quality was set to normal and motion blur was turned on with 8 samples.
So, it´s clear that Motion 5 needs an update as does FCP X, because in my computers it crashes a lot.

  • Textured Text with after effects

    Hi all,
I just want to know if there's a way that I can generate a textured text in after effects.

The question isn't really clear to me, so I'll take a guess and suggest that you look into using a http://help.adobe.com/en_US/AfterEffects/9.0/WS3878526689cb91655866c1103906c6dea-7cf6a.htm l as a http://help.adobe.com/en_US/AfterEffects/9.0/WS3878526689cb91655866c1103906c6dea-7cf9a.htm l, with the underlying (fill) layer being a texture image.
I'll also remind you that doing a simple search using the http://community.adobe.com/help/search.html?q=texture+text&l=aftereffects_product_adobelr is a good way to get answers to questions like this.

  • Dynamic Link with PP/After Effects CS5 question

So, first time using After Effects ever. Absolutely loving it, can't wait to really learn this program.
    Anyways, my situation.
I have a 15 second commercial I'm editing with Premiere Pro CS5 on my MacBook Pro. The second to last shot, I initially right clicked the clip in the timeline and selected "Replace With After Effects Composition." I did some motion graphics on this shot, and I'm pretty sure when I was done, I rendered the timeline in PP which synced back into PP what I did in AE. I believe at that time I closed AE completely without saving the composition.
Now I still have this shot in my PP timeline and it still has the AE effects I added, but I do not believe there is any saved AE file that references that composition. Whenever I click "Replace With After Effects" it just opens a new linked composition, but instead of any footage and animation, there is just a big color bar screen.
Is there any way to still edit this composition in AE? What is the proper way to save files linked between PP/AE so you can completely close both programs and open them later and still edit the composition?

See, that's what I would think to, but I'm almost sure I did not save the linked comp in AE.
Not on my computer now, but I could check on lunch.
I guess I could just create a dummy project in PP, open a linked comp thru Dynamic Link, do a few changes in AE, render/sync to PP, and then close AE w/o saving and see what happens?
Are there any good walkthroughs you guys are aware of? I'm reading how pre-CS5, Dynamic Link was really only a "one-way" street, but that has changed in CS5.

  • Dissolves with Motion'd Stills

I'm having trouble getting cross dissolves to work when I try to use them between clips that come back in from Motion, ie 2 second stills with New Camera>Behavior>Basic Motion>Move applied. Just can't seem to figure it out. I'm using a freshly installed Studio 2, an upgrade from 1.
    Thanks!

It works, looks nice, but seems not the proper way to do it in the New Age.
The reasons I use handles on the .motn:
    1. Give me some room to change my mind later. I need more time for movement? I need more time for an effect to resolve? I just open in editor and make some changes.
    2. Allow the thing to be slipped within FCP.
I almost always use separate stacked tracks with this kind of assembly. But not because it's the olden way of doing things. It offers the most flexibility and, sad to say, whoever I'm usually editing with simply cannot grasp the paradigm of the interface where overlapped clips are on the same track.

  • I can't change shortcuts editing the shortcut file in preferences (mac) with After Effects CC. I Edi

I can't change shortcuts editing the shortcut file in preferences (mac) with After Effects CC. I Edit the file, but when i open AE, it still the old same keys.
How to have this working? And why until now, we don't have a GUI for shortcuts?
I use the Apple Wireless Keyboard, and need to change the preview keys to a suitable ones, because this keyboard don't have the num pad.
Until CS6, i was using ? and Shift+?, in the place of some kind of Zoom.
But this time, i edit the file, in a sort of way i tried, and non of then change at all.
WE NEED A GUI in AE Preferences to CHANGE THE SHORTCUTS!
    Thank You!

The best way to add a +1 would be for everyone to file a feature request. Those are officially tracked by Adobe (unlike this user-to-user forum) and the more people that ask for something, the more likely it is to be implemented.

  • Transfer from FCP to Motion with video effect

I am trying to transfer a clip from fcp that has a video effect (matte) wehn I open it in motion the matte is no longer there, how to I transfer the clip into motion with the effect still intacted?

None of your effects will carry over to Motion. Speed changes, color corrections, keys, etc... Why? See this:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1375867&#1375867
You can do as avidvid says and export to "fix" your effects then bring the file back in, but that won't carry the alpha over...

  • Motion Effect doesn't always work with Time Remapped clips

Hello all. I used Premiere 4 extensively (yes, '4' not 'CS4') and I'm just getting back in to it with CS6. Lots of cool new stuff to learn but I'm happy to see the basics are pretty much the same!
I'm wondering if anyone has much experience using motion effects on time-remapped clips. If I set 'position' or 'scale' keyframes in the Effect Controls, the changes are not always reflected in the program monitor, depending on the clip. If I try and set keyframes by dragging the video around the program monitor, it puts keyframes in places where I don't expect.
This doesn't affect all time-remapped clips, just some of them. Or maybe it does affect them all, just to varying degrees, depending on how extreme the time remapping is. I'm guessing now.
If I were to speculate further, I would say that the motion effect is operating on the clip before the time remapping gets applied. Again, just a guess, which is why I'm asking if someone more knowledgable has any insights before I pursue this much further..
    Many thanks!

Hi Jeff, thanks for your response! Nested clips, you say? I have heard of these things but I can only imagine what they are and how to use them. Sounds like it's time for me to RTFM!
There's so much new stuff, it doesn't surprise me that I have to not only figure out the new feature, but the proper workflow to utilize it. I gotta ask: Do you know of any documents along the lines of "how to use modern premiere from the perspective of an antiquated premiere professional"? 4.2 was my bread and butter for many years and I knew it like the back of my hand. As such, it's kind of hard to stay awake sifting through Adobe's docs which generally assume no prior knowledge; although you giving me a place to start is a big help! But like I said: I gotta ask because it'd be great if there was something just for 'people like me.' (ain't it always the case? )
    Again, thank you.
