Editing to tape help needed

I need to record a video I completed onto a DV tape and although I know how to do this on previous softwares I've used, I don't know how to do it on FCP 6. I'm recording onto DV tapes on a DVX-100B but don't know how to do so. Any help possible?

  • Coding for editing... help needed

    Hello,
My mate has filmed my wedding on an HD TV camera and is asking me what coding to put the rushes onto so I can edit them on Imovie HD6.
Can anyone tell mw what I should be telling him? I've looked around the Mac site and it seems to suggest using Mpeg4, but I'm guessing that will be pretty low quality?
    Any advice much appreciated!

    Welcome to the discussions.
iMovie 6HD edits HD in "Apple Intermediate Codec" ("AIC") and the footage should be in 720p or 1080i.
Note that if you want to burn a DVD, that's Standard Definition. SD footage should be in DV, in your case DV-PAL.

  • Help urgently needed with edit to tape / print to video error

I have tried to edit to tape and print to video a sequence (0my whole project, worked for way too many nights to let go... so frustrated and sad right now because it doesn't work.
The project is saved on an extern harddisk, my harddrive on teh pc is too full (not big enough).
My camera and FCP connects but all the time I get an error that 'the tape may be locked' . AND I HAVE TRIED WITH DIFFERENT TAPES, none of them were locked!
I am not really sure how to set the camera in this VTR mode... I have tried in the settings to set it in webcam mode... and I have tried without... and I dont have a button or setting called VTR, only a *PLAY' option or a 'FILMØ option....
My A/V settings are FireWire PAL and DA PAL 48khz ... however have no ide what that means or if these should be changed...?
I checked from apple but cannot find my DV cam on the list... hmm, does that mean I cannot do edit to tape recordings???
    My Dv cams informations:
    NV-GS140 by Panasonic, Model 0x80330B, 0x804580114B5DD1
I checked the system settings and was able to the FireWire/NV-GS140 Unit
    I have a MacBook1,1 / Intel Core Duo/ 2 GHz
    OS 10.4.11
I use the version FCP 2
Please help me out, I am really without any good suggestions how to proceed!

You're going to have to use a dvd authoring program. Burning the seq to a dvd qill just create a qt movie on a dvd data disc. It won't create a dvd video disc that plays in a dvd player.
Export from fcp a QT movie, current settings, self-contained. Use Anamorphicizer (http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Video/Anamorphicizer.shtml) to make imovie recognise it as 16:9. Then import that file to idvd.
Or you can drop your 16:9 sequence into a new 4:3 sequence to letterbox it, then you can do the export as above but skip the anamorphicizer step.
It's better to use compressor on the original 16:9 sequence and then use dvdsp to author, but if you've never used dvdsp it's a big program to get your head round.
    The export can be done in two ways;
    1. Export from fcp using 'export using compressor'.
    2. Export a QT ref/self-contained movie and import that into compressor.
    3. Export a QT movie and import it direct into DVDSP.
The second option will take longer initially (if you use the self-contained option) but will then allow compressor to work in the background, the first option will tie up fcp for the duration of the encode.
Once in compressor use one of the 16:9 dvd presets, depending on the duration of the movie and the quality you want. Don't try to adjust the settings. If your movie is 31 mins just use the shortest option (i think it's 60min) and make sure you select the m2v video and ac3 audio options. If you just select the mpeg 2 video you'll only get video, as you've discovered.
Open dvdsp and create your opening menu and a video track, import the movie file, add it to the video track, and then add the audio to the track as well. Then add any chapter submenus you may want.

  • 16:9 Help needed. Workflow: extracted video from DVD, FCE HD edit & DVDSP.

    Hi,
I have a project where according to the camera person it was shot in 16:9 with the camera (assuming a DV camcorder of some sort). It was captured from the camera and converted to a DVD (VIDEO_TS folder and everything) and sent to me for editing.
What I need help with is a workflow (and settings) to edit and output this properly.
    1) My first hiccup comes in the extract. When I view the DVD that was sent to me, the video looks squished as it squeezes the video into the 4:3 aspect ratio. I was using MPEG Streamclip to extract it. I've extracted it in a 16:9 QT format and it looks fine in FCE HD. However, once I started reading more about editing 16:9 video in the FCE PDF manual, I'm wondering if I should have kept it as 4:3 and then toggled the Anamorphic setting for the sequence.
    2) Once I have the correct source to edit - are there any considerations on export for compression? I read somewhere about a program to set the anamorpgic bit for iDVD, but plan to use DVDSP so I'm assuming I can skip this step. I also read in the forum about a QT Conversion setting to use. Do I need to? I was planning to export a reference movie and use Compressor with that. I was planning to use a "Widescreen" compressor option. Is this correct?
    3) I know this is beyond this forum, but any advice on what settings should I use in producing the DVD? As noted above I plan to use DVDSP 3 to create the DVD, and I do notice the 16:9 settings in there for each track. I was planning to use the 16:9 Letterbox track setting. Is this correct?
Any other pitfalls I should be aware of as I navigate the 16:9 jungle?
    Thanks in advance.

First, with regard to your chipset - graphics/video card:
Mobile Intel® GM45 Express Chipset, featuring the Mobile Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 450...
Your graphics card has no video RAM (VRAM) of its own.  So, it must use some of your system RAM to be able to function. This is 'dynamically allocated'. That is, your system decides how much system RAM to allocate to the graphics card. I am not aware of anyway to manually control this.
Next, you said you have installed Windows XP. Toshiba India has not posted any XP drivers for your system. Toshiba laptops are very finicky about using Toshiba 'tweaked' hardware drivers to be able to function properly. This computer is a Toshiba European version of your model, and it would appear to have a full set of XP drivers, these will work just fine in your system:
    Satellite Pro C650 PSC11E Downloads
The order you load the hardware drivers and Toshiba utilities is critical. The files available for download above are all zip files, so you will have to extract the .exe files to be able to install them. Install the drivers first, then the Toshiba utilities, and given that you already have XP basically working install in this order:
    1st Drivers:
    1) Chipset
    2) Storage Manager
    3) Display
    4) Sound
    5) then all other XP hardware drivers
    2nd Utilities:
    1) Common modules
    2) Hotkey utility
    3) all other XP Toshiba utilities.
    Good luck.

  • Edit to Tape not working for me!!! PLEASE HELP!!!!!

    Hey everyone,
I've researched this in many forums and have found what could be the answer, only to try and still get NOTHING!!!
When I drag seq. to ETT window I get the pop-up but 'insert', 'assemble', and 'preview' are kind of greyed out, and don't let me drop anything in, i.e sequence from browser, from viewer, clips, etc.
    GOAL:

Project was edited in a 23.98 timeline.
Have tried: Exporting to QT at both 29.97 and 59.94—then re-importing into FCP with a new timeline w/ matching settings.
I have been told that FCP doesn’t produce TC ‘going out’ and that essentially we are looking to 'MATCH-EDIT' to timecode on tape.
I have Black and coded tape to 00:58:50;00
Project In point is 00:59:00;02 --for all intents/purposes this is a test seq. so OUT point is 01:01:00;07
I have complete Deck Control in FCP but, the problem I’m having is not being able to use the “Edit to Tape” func. In FCP. I can Black and Code the beginning of the tape, and the “ETT” window shows the corresponding timecode on the deck, but when I go to drop the sequence in the ‘Insert’ or ‘Assemble’ drop box, I get nothing? I don’t know if it’s the settings in the DECK, KONA CARD or FCP??
PLEASE HELP!!!!!!SHOW AIRING in 2 DAYS!!!!
    Thanks
    Zack

That deck cannot do insert editing or assemble editing with proper show time to the 1200 deck. That is that decks big weakness. Only the 1400 deck has this ability. You'll have to crash record and then get the tape dubbed at a dub facility with the proper show code.
TRUST ME...I have been down this path.

  • "Out of Memory" - need to "edit to tape"

I deleted my render files on my current sequence and am hoping that it works - but can anyone tell me if there is a fix for the "out of memory" error - It is not a capture scratch disc space issue or a ram issue... I have rebooted the computer / the app/ switched computers / saved the project to the desktop / rendered in little chunks....
if this re-render of the files doesn't work... im stumped...
    any advice??
    dual2.66 macpro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Compression settings error...assume you are using the buttons on the edit to tape screen...
    From the web...
“The error message can appear because the Assemble, Insert or Preview buttons refer to whatever is currently loaded into the Viewer window. If there is a Color Matte, Slug, Bars & Tone, or any generated media element currently loaded in the Viewer window, no specific compression settings are applied and Final Cut Pro cannot proceed.
If you are using these generated media elements, they need to be placed into a sequence before they will acquire their specific compression attributes. You can then load the sequence into the Viewer window and use Assemble, Edit, or Preview buttons.
It is probably simpler, however, to simply drag the Sequence icon from the Browser directly to the Assemble, Insert or Preview overlay areas on the right side of the Edit to Tape Window. This saves the additional step of initially loading the Sequence to the Viewer.”

  • Edited on MacPro, needs to Write Video to Edit-to-Tape on PowerMac G5?

Anyone else run into this issue?
I edit programs for broadcast on my MacPro at home (same version & settings as Final Cut software on systems at the office). Everything right up through rendering is done on my home system.
I bring it in via G-raid(firewire800) to one of the office systems with decks for printing, both of which are PowerMac G5s.
Open project - timelines look/play rendered as they did when I finished them at home.
Edit to Tape - after I drag/drop the sequence to Insert in the Edit-to-Tape window, Final Cut then proceeds to "write video" for at least 45 minutes as if it's re-rendering the entire sequence.
Through a TON of elimination & troubleshooting, we discovered this error is consistent when our other MacPro in the office gets the same result when an edited/rendered sequence from it is brought over to the G5s.
    What are your thoughts?

I have often found that the rendering FCP needs to do just before an Edit to Tape to be very inconstient. I wonder if it could be writing the render to a different drive on the MacPro other that the G-Raid. I also wonder if it might be rendering to RAM for output.... I've never heard of this so it's just a theory. Do you do a Sequence > Render Only > Mixdown? Might try that. Also do a forum search for "Edit to Tape" as there are many topics on the subject.
    And welcome to the forum.

  • Help...Edit to tape?? Not working...

    Hey all...
I'm trying to output my timeline through Firewire to my DV/DVCam firewire deck.
Everytime I try, FCP comes back with " Incompatable Compression settings..." yada yada..
Have to start at a precise timecode but FCP won't output.
My settings are DV NTSC, video playback and Audio are both Apple Firewire and FireWire DV repectively, and in the A/V device tab playback is on firewire. I also tried checking the "Different Output for edit to tape...." and set it to firewire also.
    Still keep getting this error.
FCP will Print to Video but that leaves a second or so offset from the timeline on the tape.
The tape has to match the recorder.
    Any Ideas?
    Thanks in Advance.

There's this SimpleViodeoOut program that can lay back DV-stream with timecode on tape.
    It's on apple's Developers sites.
    http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/samplecode/SimpleVideoOut/index.html
    •Download the SampleViodeoOut Sample Code.
    •Open the downloaded SimpleVideoOut.Zip
•In the SimpleVideoOut-folder that comes up, double click on the SimpleVideoOut.sit.
    • An new 'SimpleVideoOut Folder' comes up. In there you'll find a SimpleVideoOut for OSX version.
Well: First export your sequence from the FCP timeline (Make sure the timeline has the Timecode you desire). Export as Self Contained movie, as DV.
Open Simple VideoOut and drag your movie in the required box...
Everything runs automaticcally from there... (Starting to record on the beginning of your tape...)

  • Edit to tape in Final Cut Studio 2 question

This entire week we've been dividing time and shoots using one camera, a Panasonic DVX100A. As a result I think the settings on our camera and computer have changed a bit between shoots. That being said I'm having a problem doing an 'Edit to Tape' from the file menu in Final Cut Pro 6.0.3. When the Edit to Tape window comes up, we set the in point there after pulling over the Sequence we want to edit to tape on the camera monitor for the recorder it says it's recording. However, all I see it a blue screen with the 'REC' notice at the top. Since we've done this using this camera a few times I'm not sure what settings may have changed. To sum up, I need to know what has to change in order for me to effectively edit a sequence to tape in FCP 6. Thanks (most definitely) in advance for your help!

Alex, thanks for your help. I didn't notice one of the FCP settings for my camera had been changed. Funny how working at 2:45 a.m. can sneak up on your brain.
    Thanks again & take care!

  • Edit to tape INSERT & NO AUDIO

Ok, so i have a brand new Mac, Decklink Blackmagic Extreme HD card in it. Everything works properly, except the insert edit to tape. When I perform an assemble edit through the "Edit to tape" window it works fine, but cannot get the insert edit to insert audio?? Using a Sony UVW-1800 deck. Performed a test on the deck with another editor and it worked fine. Using the Blackmagic 10Bit Easy setup thus far. A bit confused about what the device control settings should be, or where I should be looking to get FCPS2 to tell the deck to record audio when doing an insert edit. And before you ask, yes I have selected "all on" from the "edit to tape" window audio pop-up.
I need help soon, as this is how we put all our productions to master tapes for the company!! Thanks in advance!!

Alright, if you have a Decklink card, and a BetaSP deck... this will be VERY helpful!!!

  • Edit to tape - timecode mismatch between timeline & output tape (Digi Beta)

I'm trying to edit to tape (insert) a programme. The clock drops in on exactly the right frame but by the time I get to the end of part there's a 2 frame difference between my timeline TC and the master tape's TC. In other words my timeline ends at 11.30.00 but when I play back the recorded tape the same frame is now 11.30.02. Is there a) an explanation for this and b) a solution? I need frame accuracy as I'm exporting my audio to OMF for the dub. Any advice hugely appreciated. Thanks. J

    Jeremy,
Wish I could offer more help other than to say Blackmagic is usually pretty quick with a fix once they identify there is a problem. We're in Sydney, and had some problems with dropped frames a couple of years ago, and they did some very quick testing and realised that they hadn't tested there new drivers with Batch digitise - point is, they issued a fix (updated driver) extremely quickly.
Go through your supplier and see if you can get their ear, especially if you can identify the problem happening consistently.

  • Edit to Tape Not Working

Playing from the timeline, outputting to the monitor, works fine. But when I try to "Edit to Tape", I get nothing, sometimes just bars from the Kona 2 Card. As well, a brief message will pop saying "video out in progress" and the mirror on the computer looks distorted.
After I try to edit to tape, just playing from the timeline will no longer output to the monitor. Refreshing video ssources doesn't solve the problem. I restart and then playing from the timeline outputs again, until I try to "edit to tape" again.
    Any ideas?

I had a similar problem recently. I not only had the no signal to tape problem you had but also was getting a sync issue with my Digital Betacam. It seems that all was fixed by installing the latest AJA Kona (3 in my case) drivers, software, control panel, etc. Apparently when I updated to Leopard 10.5.2, I didn't realize that there was an AJA update that I should have done as well. That seems to have fixed the problem.
Open your AJA Control Panel software and go to the Info tab and see if there are any warnings in red text. You may have to manually trash your old AJA Control Panel, etc to make sure you have the latest version after installing the latest from their website.
I would try that as well as the usual stuff (repair permissions, etc). Another test would be to just hit record on your deck and see if FCP outputs signal to the deck without using the Edit to Tape function. Not sure what that will tell you? But if it does, I would imagine you just need the correct AJA drivers (which hopefully will solve the machine control/signal output issue). I've never heard of the preview window being distorted. That's kinda weird.
    Hope that helps!

  • Trying to "edit to tape"

I am trying to use the edit to tape feature so that I can put a certain timecode on the tpe I'm printing out to. ... I am having issues with it ... I black the tape using the edit to tape feature and then try puting in the timecode that i want my video to start at and FCP will not let me drop in the sequence to the edit to tape window.
I am using a panasonic DVCpro HD deck (my video is 1080i)
nd I am trying to go through a blackmagic decklink
please help! I need to be able to start picture at a certain TC on the tape
    Thanks!

I ran into the same issue printing masters of our TV shows. The Outdoor Channel required the show to start at 01:00:00;00. We tried every way possible to get the TC through FireWire to the deck until I came across a blurb in the FCP user manual that says FireWire cannot output TC. You must have another type of deck control, like RS-422. We ended up using an old deck that was laying around to black 5 minutes of TC, then used edit to tape to do an assemble edit starting at the correct TC.
If that's not an option for you, I did run across this thread while searching for an answer:
    http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/8/974059#974075
I didn't try it, but its suppose to work!

  • Edit to Tape error

I'm having an error of: "Unable to open the specified Video Output device" when trying to assemble to my DV camcorder. I have been able to use this feature before. I'm able to control my camcorder using the Edit to Tape window and set the in point. I know I can bypass this problem by Printing to Tape, but I want my sequence to start at a specific time, and I want to lay down black, bars and title beforehand.
    Any help is appreciated,
    reicko†

Could be the tape... the error message is saying that it can't read the timecode in effect... tried another tape?
If it fails again, could be the camera needs a cleaning or adjustment. If the recording isn't exactly right, you'll see TC errors then worse...
If it were some sort of software bug, we'd all see the problem...
Just for kicks you could try trashing prefs, but if all else seems to be OK, then it's more likely the tape or the camera. Cleaning cassette?
