Ejecting USB sends Mac Pro to sleep
Love my Mac. Except that occasionally when I pull out a USB device from one of the front ports, it goes to sleep which is extremely irritating. Happens only intermittently, but has already done it 3x this morning.
I thought it was a power issue at first, so always power down an external hard disk (after ejecting) before pulling the cable. This seems to help but not always, and anyway not all USB devices can be ejected (PDA, printer). Sleep is currently set to "never".
Any thoughts greatly appreciated!
Do you get any information about the crash....if you open up console and look in System Diagnostic Reports is there a Kernel Crash corresponding to the date?
I've not used an external card nor can I offer help interpreting logs but you might narrow it down to the sound card driver if that file appears somewhere in there.

CAN the Mac Pro deep-sleep with the Apple Raid Card?
So, reading through previous posts, there seems to be a problem (or 'feature' to charge the battery?) that prevents the Mac Pro from sleeping when the Apple Raid Card is installed.
Can users owning this setup corraborate? Is this indeed the intended way to work?
Thx,
Danas far as I know, deep sleep is only available for portable machines. if you meant regular sleep I cant help you because I haven't got a RAID card.
edit: I may have confused deep sleep with safe sleep… sorry. -
Keeping Mac Pro in sleep mode when not in use
Is there any harm to the computer system to put it in sleep mode each time it is not in use as opposed to shutting the system down? I apologize if this is considered a silly question but curious to know if it causes any harm to the system apart from using up a small amount of hydro,
Thanks for your helpThanks for the reply.
That's what I thought but just thought I would throw out the question to confirm. Putting the Mac Pro in sleep mode certainly makes for much quicker startup although coming from a Windows Vista environment the Mac is certainly much faster at startup than my PC. I do use a UPS on all my systems and have it configured much the same as you.

USB causes Mac Pro to crash.
Hi Guys,
I've got a MacPro1,1, I have an issue with the USB on it. Now and again, when ever I eject my USB it totally locks my Mac Pro up and I have to cold reboot it (I.E turn the power off). The USB was formatted with the Mac file system, and I always make sure I eject it before removing. It's at the point of removal that it crashes.
Anyone else had this before?
Cheers,
Matt.Do you get any information about the crash....if you open up console and look in System Diagnostic Reports is there a Kernel Crash corresponding to the date?

Mac pro not sleeping since mountain lion upgrade from Lion
Hi, just wondering if anybody was having problems with their mac not sleeping after upgrading to Mountain Lion. The screen no longer blanks either, screensaver just runs until I move the mouse etc. all was fine under Lion, tried various things, stopping program's etc to no avail. I can force sleep manually just not happening when set to in energy saver settings. Machine is a mid 2010 mac pro, would of thought it shouldn't of have any issues running ML! Odd how the screen power down isn't working either. I'm out of ideas, must be a bug of some sort.
Problem turned out to be a sidewinder USB joystick. Once unplug sleep resumed as scheduled.

Disabled sleep, but mac pro still sleeps!
I've got a Xeon Quad Core Mac Pro, running 10.5 Server (10.5.5 to be specific)
This computer provides services for a small office network, and I've disabled sleep, but it still goes to sleep sometimes. I went into System Preferences --> Energy Saver and disabled sleep. Below you can see in system.log when the computer went to sleep this morning. How do I definitively disable sleep?
I wish I knew what "Previous Sleep Cause: 5" meant, so at least I could know what triggered the event.
Thanks for any leads.
If this is the wrong forum, please advise where would be more appropriate.

Un-pluging camera puts Mac Pro to sleep.
I have come across something very odd. When I un-plug a small Nikon camera from the USB slot my Mac Pro is put to sleep. Any ideas?
The Mac Pro went to sleep just a few minutes ago. I had a flight and was loading the photos, quit the transfer program, checked the application's Preferences to make sure 'Disconnect after transfer.' was selected, made sure the camera icon was gone from the Finder window, double made sure by opening Disk Utility to make sure the camera did not show up. Turned off the camera, unplugged the camera and the computer immediately went to sleep.

Hi,
I am a long time Palm enthusiast who is frustrated. No more Palm products for me or anyone I speak to until I solve this problem. Someone at Palm should be paying attention to their long time cusotmers. I bought Palms in 2002 and 2003.
The support literature coming with two Treo 755p that I bought was so poor that never saw the fine print that there was three months of support if I registered the devices. The registration page does not let me register. All the fields are ghosted after I put in the serial number. I bought one in June 2008 and the other in early 2008. So never registered and can get no help from Palm now it seems.
So beside that gripe below is the problem issue info.
I can't get a Verizon Treo 755p to USB cable Hot Synch with my daughters 17" Mac Pro Laptop. It is using OS 10.5x She lives in another city so I am trouble shooting this remotely.
Did - Revd Palm upgrage has been installed.
PalmDesktopMac421Revd.dmg (17MB)
http://kb.palm.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE/,/?St=4518,E=0000000000255177998,K=6239,Sxi=3,case=obj(33...
Did in advanced settings on the Treo select in the Synch preferences allow other Hot Sync applications.
That process worked however on my own Treo 755p Verizon as below:
After much work, hours over several months, I got my my Treo 755p Verizon to Hot Synch with a QuickSilver desk top Mac running os 10.5x.
Did the RevD upgrade.
Did in advanced settings on the Treo select in the Synch preferences allow other Hot Sync applications. Otherwise the Wireless Synch feature prevents a Hot Synch.
Once those both were done than Hot Synch works fine, and Wireless Synch works fine and does not interfere.
The Wireless on both PDAs is scheduled to be removed on both Treos due the economy on Feb. 4th, so I would like the HotSynch to be working so her Treo is backed up.
Thanks so much to anyone who replies to help out.
Best

This question was solved.
View Solution.Works now, she had created a user ID as prompted when installing the HotSynch Software, but it was not the same name of the Treo 755p. The default ID was the one she from installing the software, so it showed nothing in address or contacts, but when she switched to the Treo ID than all her stuff was there.

Problems with EFI Firmware Update to 1.5 for mid 2010 Mac Pro, and sleep issues
Hello to the community, I have run into an annoying issue.
I need to update the EFI firmware on my 8 core mid-2010 Mac Pro. I downloaded the EFI update from the apple website from here : http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1321
But everytime I download it, as I click to install, it gives me the message:
Alert
This software is not supported on your system.
But clearly this is the correct EFI for my computer. I tried burning the Firmware restoration onto a CD from here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1320
But the computer did not respond the way it said it should (with the 3 flashes/beeps etc.) and have the optical drive open for the CD.
So I'm completely stuck.
*Also my Mac Pro had issues with sleep, when I put it to sleep, sometimes when I try to bring it back, it restarts itself, and other times, it just turns itself on and the monitor screen remains black, so I have to hit the power button to turn it off then back on again. This only happnens when the computer has been put to sleep for a slightly extended period of time, roughly 20mins +, sometimes longer. I was trying to solve this problem by first updating the firmware because I think it could be related to that, but I've had this problem with the firmware so I couldn't find out. This is actually the bigger problem for me because it will affect my work. I am currently using an iMac while I fix up this mac pro.
I'm a music composer so I've upgraded many aspects of my system due to work. I have a 1TB Samsung 840 evo SSD, 2 seagate 2 TB HDD, and 1 WD 1TB HD (the original one in the mac pro), along with 32 GB of RAM. So my only problems are the firmaware and the weird activity when the computer is put to sleep.
Some help would be greatly appreciated!

Mac Pro never sleeps after upgrading to Mavericks
Hi Folks
Just realised that after upgrading to Mavericks from Mountain Lion, my Mac Pro never goes into sleep mode after the time set for it in System Preferences > Energy Saver.
This never happened with Mountain Lion.
Any body here having the same issue?
FYI - This is a 2012 Mac Pro having duo 6-cores, 64 GB RAM, 1 x SSD and 3 x HDD.
Thanks you for your comments.
BTest after each of the following steps that you haven’t already tried:
Step 1
Take all the steps suggested in this support article. That's the starting point for any further effort to solve the problem. Skipping any of those steps may mean that the problem won't be solved. Note that, as stated in the article, the computerwill not sleep if Internet Sharing is enabled.
Step 2
From the menu bar, select
▹ System Preferences ▹ Accessibility ▹ Speakable Items: Off
Step 3
Select
▹ System Preferences ▹ Bluetooth ▹ Advanced...
and uncheck both boxes marked
Open Bluetooth Setup Assistant at startup if...
Step 4
Reset the SMC.
Step 5
Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal. Don’t launch any applications at first. If sleep still doesn’t work properly, back up all data and reinstall the OS. After that, if you still have the issue, make a “Genius” appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
If sleep now works as expected, go on to the next step.
Step 6
Still in safe mode, launch the usual set of applications that are running when you have the problem, including your login items, one at a time, testing after each one. Some applications may not work; skip them. You might be able to identify the cause of the problem this way.
Step 7
If sleep is still working after you’ve launched all the usual applications, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and test again. If sleep still works, you’re done, at least for the moment.
If you still have the sleep issue after booting out of safe mode, post again. -
Hi
I have a new Mac Pro OSX v 10. 5. 5. If I select sleep and then later use keyboard the computor will wake but not the monitor. The only way I can awaken the monitor is to reboot. If I just leave the computor to put itself to sleep there is no problem as it will wake straight away when the keyboard is touched.
I have been advise to establish a new user account, removing all old accounts because it is suspected software has become corrupted.
Has anyone experienced this particular problem and how was it cured?
RichardsdrumsDo you really have OSX 10.5.5? Try updating to 10.5.8

Turning USB HDD (Mac Pro) into Time Capsule for MacBook Pro
I have both a Mac Pro, and MacBook Pro, and have an external HDD connected to my Mac Pro, which is on all the time. I really don't want to keep re-connecting the HDD to my laptop and back to my Desktop computer when I backup my devices. Is there a way, without buying extra hardware, to make the USB HDD a wireless HDD from my Mac Pro, where I can backup my MacBook Pro? Thanks all for your help.
Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Yes.

Kernel panics when I wake up my Mac Pro from sleep mode.
Hi All,
This problem occurs about twice a week and has been happening for a few months. I have taken my Mac to two authorized repair centers and they can not find any problems. Both had the Mac for a few days and ran the hardware stress test. I have a 2011 Quad Core running ML 10.8.5 with 16GB ram. Today when it happend, the power light was not doing the pulsating and it was well past my one hour limit for sleep mode. I went to tap the space bar and instant shut down with kernel panic. Only application running was Firefox. I'll post the panic log. The repairs centers found them to be of no use. I have tried to reset the SMC, Pram and repaired the permissions. My next step was to try to replace the graphics card which is the ATI Radeon 5770. I have a spare. I'm lost. Please help. Thanks!!!!
