Electrical problem w/ power adapter?

I have a 23 inch Cinema Display... actually 2 of them... purchased several months apart. Oldest one is maybe a year ish old now and it is mis behaving.
It fails to come on at computer power up. It started randomly doing this...then consistently.
I've switched the ports on the video card w/ the 2 monitors... the card is not the problem.
I tried un plugging then re-plugging the monitor in at the power source.... and it sometimes came on..... so then I began un plugging and re-plugging various elements up the chord... I believe the problem is with the white power adaptor .... when I switch out this component with the other normally working monitor... it displays the same symptoms.
Anyone have any experience with this?
Thanks

Hi-
Not personally, but, yours is a fairly regular topic on the forums. If there is a "common" problem, this is one of them.
If the monitor is within the "yearish", get it to Apple for warranty replacement.
If under Applecare, get it to Apple for waranty replacement.
If not, you can order a new power brick from Apple.....

  • MacBook Pro whine problems plus wake-to-sleep problems and power adapter

Hello. I bought my MacBook Pro for some months ago as "refreshed". They said that it worked fine and had no problems. That just the owner had left it because he didn't want it anymore. However, sure, it has worked great. But it has a loud annoying whine. It is very annoying. Nope, no Mac OS X update or firmware update have worked. I guess I should leave it in, or should I? Maybe I can get a MacBook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo instead of my current MacBook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo (2.0 GHz). Or what do you think?
The second problem is with wake-to-sleep. The latest update said it would fix this issue. But it is even worser now than it was. (and it was bad). It seems like when the power adapters gets unplugged, that it goes to sleep then. But it also goes to sleep sometimes and is hard to wake up, so still same issues there.
The first but last. My Power adapter is kinda broken, it works, but the quality seems kinda bad. These two things that you plugin to the wall, they are bent so it kinda hard to plug it in.
    Anyone knows what to do?

It whines when on batteries too.
Then just install the kernel extension, aand pure silence I don't think that it decreases a lot the battery life. It is safe to try, and it can be installed uninstalled dynamically to the system. It has an automatic installer, which will enable it each time your computer starts. If you do not want it to be automatic like that, let me know, I can explain how to controle loading/unloading of the driver

  • Problem with Power Adapter. Please Help!

So, I recently noticed that when I try to use my laptop while it's charging up from a low battery it will randomly STOP charging. The annoying phenomenon usually occurs when I play video or surf online as the computer recharges from a low percentage (5%-50%). Now, I should be able to use my computer while it's charging, right?? Also, I discovered that the power adapter gets hot and makes a humming sound that grows louder right before it shuts off. The odd thing is, is that the laptop will charge just fine if I leave it alone. Weird!
I wouldn't be all worked up about this, but here is what has happened so far:
I have taken the laptop and power adapter to Apple several times and explained that the orange LED light shuts off and that I have to plug the adapter back into the wall to get it to come back on.
So far, the people at Apple have:
    1) replaced the first power adapter (that did not work, so I went back)
    2) gave me another power adapter (that also did not fix the problem)
    3) actually replaced the battery (also did not solve this problem)
I don't know what to do because I don't want to look petty over a stupid problem. However, I have the warranty and this problem is becoming VERY annoying.
    Any ideas or similar situations?
    Thanks,
    Aaron

Hi. Have you tried resetting the SMC: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964

  • Problem with Power Adapter- Dc-In or DC to DC??????

My PowerBook G4 12" 1.5 GHz is being finicky about the power adapter. It plugs in and will charge but the slightest touch will cause it to stop. I don't know if this would be the DC-In port or the DC to DC board. I've read a little about both but am still unclear. I want to fix this problem. The combo drive needs replaced so I thought while it's all apart I might as well fix the DC problem too. Any suggestion or help?
    PowerBook G4 1.67/PowerMac G4 DP 1.42   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

There is a DC-in card, which also has the socket on it. If you can wiggle the plug, that suggests either there is a socket issue in the PB, or is it possible that your power adapter plug itself is bad? Can you find another power adapter to see if you can replicate it stopping charging? I know of one case where the wires under the plug strain relief broke, however, it wasn't obvious just looking at the plug.

  • Problem with power adapter?

i just bought a new (refurb'd) power adapter about 2 months ago. the one that came with my iBook had been stripped a bit bare by my usage techniques so it wasn't connecting.
lately (past 3 weeks) the adapter has been constantly switching from orange to green and back again while i have it plugged in and the amount it says is left fluctuates...about 5 minutes ago it said it had 59 minutes, now it says it has an hour and 5 minutes. right now, the charge is going really fast...it's never gone this fast (charge now says 52 minutes).
any idea what i should do to fix this? i've tried calling my apple store but can't get through to a real person, and since it's a half hour away, if i can avoid going i'd like to (especially since i have been there twice already this weekend)

    Hi there:
Well my first and really only guess is that your refurbed power adapter is at fault here. If your old one wasn't doing this then I would say the battery is not at fault here. Maybe try calling Apple. Sounds pretty frustrating. Hope it ends up well.

  • Power adapter goes dead

    Hello,
I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem; my power adapter went dead. No signs, just went dead. Called apple and they sent me a new one but low and behold, it looked like a refurbished one and was missing the 'prong' part of the adapter. I called and they said the prong part is not included in warranty. (what a joke) A brand new air, less than a month old and they will not even replace the whole power adapter when it fails.
I have been a die hard apple fan since their inception, and this is the kind of stuff that makes you want to dump them. (that and dropping the iphone price after 2 months and then upgrading the memory - screwing their most loyal fans.)
The new partial replacement did nothing. It, too, does not work, so I have no idea if it is the laptop or the charger. I have no way to charge my laptop in the meantime.
Apple seems to be falling away at the wayside.
A brand new computer, their most loyal fan, and I can't charge my new laptop less than a month old and it looks like they are going to make me buy a new adapter.

What prong part? You mean the prongs to plug it into the wall AC socket? What can't you use the old one from the old adaptor?

  • HP Pavillion DV4 1123us power adapter problem

    Hi,
After using the HP Pavillion DV4 1123us for two years suddenly I noticed that the power adapter is not supplying power to the computer and it is making some not too loud repeatitive sound. I replaced the power adapter with HP 90W Smart Power Adapter which worked fine for a few weeks and then I noticed whenever I connect this to the wall outlet it makes some repeatitive chirping sound and this is also not suppying power to the computer anymore. It behaves like this even when it is not connected to the laptop which indicates that there is some problem with the adapter and not with the internal powers supply of the laptop. It is so surprising that the replacement power adapter stopped working so early.
In my home all the other laptops are working just fine and and found all of them are two pin  - only these two are three pin. Not sure if this has gota anything to do with this fault.
Any help on this matter will be highly appreciated.

  • Minor Problem with MagSafe Power Adapter

I got my MBP almost a year ago now (partially why I'm asking the question) and I've noticed that my power adapter doesn't always show the charge light. Sometimes it is not on at all, and sometimes it is less bright in color (both green and amber).
If I remove it and put it back it usually corrects itself.
It if fully functional; even if the light is completely out and plugged in it still shows as charging.
So, is this normal? I never remember having this sort of problem with my PB G4.

I would think the led light on my adapter cable was broken, but I discovered it works fine on a co-workers MBP. His adapter, which we know works, does NOT work (ie. the led does not come on) when attached to my computer. This indicate to me that the problem, whatever it is, can sometimes be with the computer and not the adapter.
I would be curious if others with apparently dead leds have tried their chargers on other MBPs.
Here's the long version of my story:
My 5W MagSafe completely fried after only 9 months.
The new adapter was fine for several days until this morning.
My "low battery" warning popped up, so so I plugged it in to recharge and immediately noticed the little led on the charger cord did not come on.
I found it hard to believe that I had another bad adapter, so before making the trip back to the store, I went into the studio where there are some other MBP users.
I plugged my adapter into another laptop and the led came on. It appeared to function completely normally. I tried MagSafe adapters from two other MBPs, but the led did not come on on either of them while attached to my computer.
This made me think there was some sort of problem with the connector on the computer itself. Just visually, it appears to be clean and corrosion free.
The next obvious step, it seemed, would have been to try swapping batteries with the other laptops, but mine is a 17" and everyone else here has 15"... and so we have different battery sizes.
One of the people here at the studio had a little utility called "Coconut Battery", that reports information about the battery health. When I ran it on my laptop, I got what I thought were rather surprising results.
It showed the usual things like current charge (21%), battery capacity and so on. But under "Additional Info" it said "Charger connected: Yes" and "Battery is charging: No".
I figured this narrowed it down to a problem with the battery. But as I was showing these results to my co-worker, the "Current Battery Charge" changed from 21 to 22%. Huh? We left it plugged in and it continued to show a steady climb in the charge, as if it is working normally. Except there is no led light, and the software still says it is not charging. Odd.
I then noticed that the built-in battery level indicator on the status bar was also showing the same increases. The led lights on the back of the battery are indicating an increase as well.
Just out of curiosity, I ran a second battery health analyzer program and again got these conflicting results. This one reported the same battery charge and capacity and so on as the previous one. It also recognized that the laptop was running off of AC power, that there was a battery, but it said "Not Chargeable."
So now I am going to let it continue until I have a full charge and then see if the computer will run as usual from the battery.
I don't think the store here is going to give me another adapter since this one appears to work just fine on the other computers.
Any thoughts on why the led would work on other laptops but not mine?
Why the battery health monitors report that the battery is being charged, but also that it is "not chargeable"?

  • Power Mac G4 Digital Audio Electrical Problem?

My G4 has recently begun making a 'whinning' noise. I thought it was the hard drive going bad. I replaced the hard drive and within minutes the replacement began to hum [squeeech?] like the first. I obtained a replacement drive and within an hour the same problem developed. This time Maxtor/Seagate sent me a Seagate Barracuda drive.
Last evening I installed the Seagate drive AND switched my power surge protector to a different electrical outlet. Booted my Mac and it ran fine for about an hour + and then it too started to whine...and continues as I write this.
At work someone suggested it may be an electrical problem.
    Can anyone HELP ME???
Also e-mail to me at: <Edited by Moderator>
    Thank You!

    Hi-
I would venture a guess that a fan is making the noise. Are your fans dirty? Do they spin freely? Check the large case fan, behind the hard drive, and the fan in the power supply.
Any wires going where they shouldn't?

  • Can using a MB power adapter with a MBP become a problem?

I got a late 2008 Macbook here and a early 2008 Macbook Pro. I noticed that the power adapters are of different size. When I use the power adapter of the late 2008 Macbook with my early 2008 Macbook Pro, it gets quite hot which, I assume, is due to a higher power requirement of the early 2008 MBP.
    Can this become a problem?

Although I cannot say for your particular combination, the general rule tends to be that a power adaptor that is lower in power rating than what was issued can run the computer or charge the battery, but not both. There are time when you need max power. It's obvious from Apple docs and reports here that the MBP can draw from both the battery and AC power under extreme workload condition. In such a case the battery would run down, something less likely to happen with the proper adaptor.
I have a pre-owned PowerBook G4 17" that should have a 65W power adaptor but came with a 45W unit. It will not start on AC power without some charge on the battery. That's the stuff you can encounter.

  • Power adapter problems

I just got a new MacBook the day before yesterday and am very pleased with it so far apart from the design of the power adapter. It is an "L" style Magsafe connector. When I attach it with the wire coming forward I am unable to access the ports near it because they are covered by the solid part of the connector ! It means I have to take the wire round the back of the computer and then round the side in front of the DVD drive ! What kind of design is that ? In addition the power adapter stopped working just now and it's only two days old ! A restart fixed the problem but I'm unhappy about it.

Hopefully the MacBook will get redesigned, or the MagSafe's design will get tweaked a bit more so it's a bit more versatile.
This does sound like a bit of an inconvenience for you

  • HT3131 Problem with closed Mac connected to power adapter

Dear support, as far as i understand when my mac is connected to display and closed, i can not unplug mac from power  adapter - as the display will be off right away. Problem is - that i don't want my mac always be connected to power as it will harm the battery. Any Ideas?

Thanks for the answer. So that means there is no way that u can use external display in Clamshell mode without power adaptor.  As far as I understood - I need to fully use my battery at least once a month, and then I can continue using power on all the time until next month, right?
