Enabling external monitor crashes Compiz

I'm having a problem extending my desktop to an external monitor from my laptop. I'm using Compiz-fusion icon to replace Xfwm4 in Xfce. I activate the external monitor using
xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1440x900
It turns on no problem and resizes my desktop to 1440x900. My laptop screen now shows the top left corner of the desktop (it's 1024x600).
So now I try to extend the desktop so each screen can be used separately with this
xrandr --output VGA1 --right-of LVDS1
This works, for the most part. The only problem is that compiz crashes. I've tried re-enabling it afterwards but it just crashes again. I used fusion-icon to swap to xfwm4 and everything works fine. Does anyone know (how to check) why this is happening?

some hardware doesnt support textures higher than 2048, so if the added display real estate is bigger than that, you cannot use compiz that way.
try setting the second display below the first one (thats what i did), and see if it works that way (remember, neither height nor width can be bigger than 2048)

  • T60 win7 x1400 external monitor crashes...

hi, i am running a t60 with x1400 and a postville ssd. at the moment my computer crashes regualry after a while when i connect an external monitor. doesn't matter if direct or via docking station. nor it makes a difference if i have to external monitors connected. short before the computer crashes the cursor will trasnform from a pointer to the thing you can see on the attached image. cursor will be still functional. up to 60 seco nds later the computer crashes showing a disturbed view on the monitor. you can't see the original content of the monitor anymore.  not shure if it helps preventing from crashing moving the mouse from left to right monitor and clicking right mouse button. sometimes the cursor recovers..

I have the same problem on my T60P!  I am not having heat issues; I believe that the issue is that Lenovo has not released a Win7 x64 driver for the video card.  I have an ATI Mobility FireGL V5250, and the latest driver that windows can find is from 12/1/2008.  Lenovo has no driver for Win7 in their matrix, and the Vista driver will not work.  I have all other updates installed from Lenovo, and am running BIOS ver. 2.25
Lenovo, PLEASE request an updated driver from ATI for these computers!
ATI has the drivers written, it is just up to Lenovo to request the driver be compiled for our computers!  I run an external monitor via DVI-D at 1900x1200 resolution, and this causes the computer to crash at least 4-5 times per day.  Sometimes I get a BSOD, sometimes it locks up, sometimes it just goes black.  If I don't have an external display connected, I never have any issues.
    Lenovo, please support us!

I'm sure this can be do i just dont know what buttons to push because i cant see a screen.
Ihis is my first forum ever thanks!

    Hi mate
I recommend using the key combination FN + F5
You can use this in order to switch to external monitor or TV output.
This key combination support several options:
    - internal screen + external screen
    - external screen only
    - TV out
    - etc...
You have to press FN + F5 several times in order to get the right output.

  • MBP & Lion with external monitor crashes!

I have a macbook pro 13'' (2011) and OS X Lion. But the mac crashes every time I try to boot while I use an external monitor.
I only get 2 white screens (on the monitor and on the mac), the fan gets very loud and nothing happens anymore.
The only way to boot is to boot the mac without an external monitor.
It's plugged in via HDMI and an HDMI to mini displayport adapter.
The Monitor is a Samsung Syncmaster XL2370HD.
I hope anyone has a solution for me.

I have the same problem.  I have MBP 13" and it used to able to hooked up to 23" PHillips Monitor via displayport to VGI.  But after installing Lion and after everything connected, my external monitor does not work everytime I close my MBP.  Before with S leopard, when I close my MBP and wake the comp using bluetooth keyboard (apple), i was able to wake the MBP and the external monitor displays.  But now (Lion) when I close MBP, external monitor shows this error message "Cannot display this video mode, change computer display input to 1280 x 760 @ 60 Hz". Then I opened MBP and I changed the display to 1280 x 760 but when I close MBP, the external monitor shows the same error message.
MBP 13" 2.26Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2 gig of ram.

  • Can't enable external monitor using Sony DCR-HC90 as pass-through

I have connected a Sony HC90 camera via firewire and have no problems capturing video (all the transport controls work fine). However, I can't get an external monitor to work through the camera. I have set Video Out to Firewire NTSC and believe I have configured the camera-to -TV connections correctly. When playing back in FCE, I get a canvas playback (should that be showing up?) but nothing on the camera output to the monitor (I also get nothing but a blue screen on the camera LCD).
Is it possible the the DV interface to the camera is one-way with respect to video?
    Any help would be appreciated.

Your suggestion solved it. It works if I chain the camcorder through the FW drive (I didn't realize you could chain firewire).
    Thanks for the help.

  • External Monitor crashing FCP 7 when rendering

    Mid 2012 15inch MBP
Processor 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB
    Software OS X 10.9.5
    FCP 7.0.3
Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter to a 30 something inch tv.
I have a 2 minute music video all pretty much done. Sequence minimized down to one track with Look Suite filters on it, with a film grain overlay. Rendering crashes Final Cut with the second monitor plugged in. I sometimes get the OUT OF MEMORY error as well. Works fine when unplugged.
How can I make this work with a second monitor setup?
I need help troubleshooting this or finding the right searches to find other posts with the same problem. I just spent an hour trying various google searches and have just found that a second monitor can slow down FCP. I don't see why that would be an issue for my MBP though.

Connecting the way your are merely lets you use the HDTV as a second desktop.  If you want to use the HDTV as an external TV monitor (using the proper TV color space) , you'll need something like the Matrox MXO2 Mini: http://www.matrox.com/video/en/products/mac/mxo2_family/mxo2_mini/

  • Newbie - External Monitoring and Media Prefs

i have a black magic card. I had gotten premier to send a signal via hdmi to my external 27inch monitor but it has just quit. At one time it would send the source monitor A/V but not the timeline.
What is the correct set up so that i can make PP default to sending the stream to the external on every project?
Also who do i set premier to dual screen editing?
In premier preferences under the media tab i see the intermediate media timebase  is set to 29.97fps drop-frame. The footage i am using is 720p60.
Does this effect how Premier is handling my source footage? If not what does the window effect?

What is the correct set up so that i can make PP default to sending the stream to the external on every project?
There is no way to set this on a project basis; it's per sequence. You must use one of the Blackmagic sequence presets to enable external monitoring from a sequence.
Also who do i set premier to dual screen editing?
I'm not positive, but this should be possible with the BMD card. However, setting up two desktop monitors is an OS setting, not necessarily a Premiere Pro setting. As long as you can expand your desktop over two monitors, you should be able to set up Premiere Pro and its various frames and panels to utilize both monitors. This is independent of full-screen external monitoring through the BMD.
In premier preferences under the media tab i see the intermediate media timebase ... Does this effect how Premier is handling my source footage? If not what does the window effect?
That dictates (or is supposed to, anyway) how imported media that does not have a specific timebase/frame rate should be handled on import. As far as I'm aware, this only affects image sequences--I've never seen it have any influence on an imported video or audio file. Even if it's set wrong when you import an image sequence, you can reinterpret the image sequence once it's in your project. Simply right-click it and select Modify > Interpret Footage. If you don't use image sequences, I think you can safely ignore this setting.

  • Black Magic External monitoring and Canvas Presets: Motion3

I have a Black magic card on my 3.0 quad intel. I am creating s Text commercial in Motion3. I have mixed the audio and imported that into Motion3. So, I am set up to create the entire project's visuals in Motion3.
My canvas is set to Broadcast HD 1080i60 because i didn't see 1080p60 and for this job i wanted to use something that is default.
I set the BM Intensity to to BM HD 1080i 59.94 and the HDTV is set to 1060i60 (via HDMI).
I get a tile in the middle of the lcd. Like 720p on a 1080p screen.
To get the best monitoring in my config how would i set up Motion3 , The BM Intensity , and maybe the HDTV also?
I am trying to avoid the jagged edges on the text and photo-wrinkles from down-scaling.
    PS: i started in motion3 as DVCpro50 - 720p30.

  • GT70 2QD system crash with FANS running at 100% on external monitor only

So I have a GT70 2QD with 4710MQ and 970M graphics.  I've swapped out the hard drives and gone with 2 SSD's and added another 16GB of RAM.  I'm quite experienced with system building, so no concerns there.  My problem only occurs when I have the computer attached to an external monitor.  The fans will get up to max without using the button to enable the cooling boost and the only way to shut it down is to put the system to sleep.  Temperatures are never an issue, especially once the fans get going.  The system will occasionally slow down and lag and has from time to time just crashed and rebooted.  I have none of these issues while using the laptops own monitor, gaming or not.  It is strictly related to being attached to an external monitor.  Any thoughts, suggestions or previous experience with this problem would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Thanks for asking...I've done a bunch of research, and from what I can see on the forums this isn't an isolated incident.  Sadly it seems that ppl that have sent their laptops in for RMA get them back and still end up having the same problem.  It very well could be a motherboard issue, but is that's the case, IMO it sounds like a faulty temperature sensor.  The only fix for that would be a new motherboard.  The cost of doing RMA business with MSI in the past has been atrocious (over $100 for a video card) so I'm afraid to ask what it would cost to send my laptop to them.  All they really need to do is a firmware update that identifies the faulty sensor and changes its operation parameters.
Firmware update has its limits. Maybe this is something cannot be fixed by firmware.

  • Apps crash when MacBook not connected to external monitor

I have been using my macbook connected to a Samsung T240M 24 inch monitor/tv for several months now with no problems at all until 2 days ago. Everything functions perfectly when the computer is connected to the external monitor, however, when I disconnect it and go mobile with my computer, almost every application I try to use crashes with the single exception that I've found so far being Firefox.
Does anybody have any clue what could be causing this bizarre behaviour? I've tried different display settings when not connected to the external monitor to no avail. PLEASE HELP!!!!

dude...that question is barely worthy of a response!!! Of course I have! I also shut it right down before disconnected the monitor.
I'm thinking this will be the thing that finally makes me get off my lazy butt and upgrade to Leopard (hoping that will fix the problem)! It's such a strange thing to just start happening after months of no problems at all.

  • 17" crash when using external monitor.

Since I bought this powerbook back in mid January I have been having problems with the computer crashing whenever it is connected to an external monitor. Usually the problem happens in either safari or terminal and ALWAYS happens when I use my scroll mouse.
According to my system.log this is the error I receive once the computer crashes:
    Feb 9 18:09:34 Aluminum kernel[0]: ATIRadeon9700::waitfor_rbspace: Overflowed block waiting for FIFO space. Have 2, need 8. RBBM_STATUS 0x8401c100
According to google this problem has been occurring since Panther.
    http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=waitfor_rbspace&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8
I have done all the defacto mac troubleshooting (pram, permissions, sudo rm -rf /mach
So far my problem has still remained unresolved. I am wondering if anyone else is having this problem. If so what monitor are you using? Does this happen regardless of having an external monitor attached? Do any ADC members know if 10.4.5 is going to have any ATI updates? Please help.

  • GS70 Stealth Pro Crashes when using external monitor..

    Hi Guys,
I just bought a GS70 ghost pro a few weeks ago and have been loving it, no problems, running Battlefield 3 and watchdogs..
However I just bought an external monitor, Asus VG248QE, when i connected it via display port and tried to play Battlefield 3 on the external monitor the laptop crashed - both screens blank- fan on- power button went orange- had to hold down the power button to reset.
Tried it again, opened Bf3 in window mode, put it on external monitor, went to full screen - it played ok for a few minutes then the laptop crashed again..
I had played bf3 no problems on the laptop screen previously.
Anyone got any ideas what might be going on? I'm new to gaming on pc so I'm a bit lost, any suggestions would be welcome.
    Thanks,
    Dan

Which nvidia driver are you using? (latest one from nvidia GeFormce Experience or MSI website)
Try to use the one from MSI website and update the latest VBIOS(80.04.F7.00.0C).

  • All opened applications crash when external monitor is attached in to MacBook Air 2013

I experience crashes (automatical restarts) of all the applications when I attach external monitor. I have MacBook Air 13-inch mid 2013 and OS X 10.8.4 in spanish. The crashes are regular but not every time I attach monitor.
    Does anyone experience the same?
    Thanks,

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you also have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • Shockwave Flash crashes when hooked up to an external monitor

    Hi,
I believe I have finally pinpointed a problem with my Adobe Schockwave Flash plug-in. When I am hooked up to my external monitor and use my flash player, I receive a message saying:
"The following plug-in has crashed: Adobe Shockwave Flash"
I have no idea why this is; I have thoroughly searched for a solution to no avail.
    My computer:
    Alienware M11x R3
    Windows 7 Standard 64-bit
    Flash Version: WIN 11,0,1,152
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M
    Google Chrome 14.0.835.202m
    My Monitor:
    Alienware 2210
--The driver software for this is up to date.
The stranger thing is, it only crashes on Google Chrome. It doesn't crash on Internet Explorer, I do not know what kind of an issue. Does anyone know how to solve this issue? I can give any additional information if needed.
    Thanks,
    -Chris

Have the same problem. It happens only with the new plugin in Chrome :
    Google Chrome
    14.0.835.202 (m)
    Betriebssystem
    Windows 7 SP1 64 bit
    Flash plugin
    11,0,1,152 C:\windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash\NPSWF32.dll
