Equation Editor (Office 2003) to Office for Mac 2011???

Thought I was doing OK converting to my Mac and Office 2001 for Mac until I tried to edit an old algebra test done on my old PC and Office 2003.  I can't understand the compatibility suggestions.  I want to update my tests to the newer format.  Do I have to recreate each test and equation? What "version" do I "save as" to make this work??  Don't even know all that I need to ask/tell??

"Templeton"  I already have a reply in my Microsoft forum.  I believe the suggestion made there is what I was looking for--seems to be working for me this morning.  Thank you again for your very valid advice!!
Somehow I clicked on my own reply as the "correct answer"--didn't mean to but cannot figure out how to correct it.  Would like to give you the credit if you can tell me how to undo what I did???

  • After download of Mav, MS Word for Office for Mac 2011 comes up blank.

After download of Mav, MS Word for Office for Mac 2011 comes up blank. Other MS Office apps work fine. When restarting iMac in Safe mode, Word opens OK. Apple support rep says, "Not our problem; it's Microsoft's. There are no Microsoft experts here." But it was Maverick that knocked Word out. (Note: the "not our problem" quote is from the third contact with Apple support. The first two support techs tried to resolve the problem, were very accommodating, and tried their best to solve the issue.)
On another note, I use a Microsoft wireless keyboard, with push-button shortcuts to mail, Safari, etc. The keyboard Command + keystroke shortcuts no longer work, and in the System Preferences file the message tells me it can't access them.
Any suggestions, especially for the former problem, would be appreciated.

Thanks; this last reply came closest to 'solving' the issue. While I selected font sub, it at first had no affect on the document.
I then went back to prefs and set the compatability dropdown from 'Custom' (where it had defaulted) to 'Word 2004-2007', assuming these docs were created from a recent past Windows.
I 'Saved As' a Word for Mac " .docm "
Whoa... the extensions mean something. Your original problem (document shows bold, italic, underline, but tables and other complex formatting are lost) sounds as though the document was being exported as a .RTF, a Rich Text Format file. If you save as a .DOCM, that's a Word Macro Enabled Document. Regular Word 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2011 docs are .DOCX. Regular Word 97 through 2004 docs are .DOC. You need to save that document as a .DOCX or a .DOC or you're gonna have problems later.
    - and the documents appear normal (though I had to switch one to 'Portrait' as it for some reason wanted to display in landsacpe.
Normally you'd have to select page orientation.
So, poor testing on my part. I have no idea which of the above steps fixed it but I'm guessing the 'Save As' to my version of Word.
If so, it would appear the 'Compatability' feature was not working at least on these two documents.
Word's compatibility feature is supposed to ensure that a document you produce is compatible with the target version of Word. If you turn the compatibility stuff on then you will be warned if you are using Word 2007 through 2011 and you use a feature that earlier versions of Word do not have. Microsoft shipped a translator which works with Office 2003 and 2004 and which allows Word 2003 or 2004 to read Word 2007, 2008, 2010, or 2011 documents (.DOCX) and to save them as Word 97 through 2004 documents (.DOC) _as long as they don't have any incompatible features_. Word's compatibility features doesn't do much for .RTFs or for .DOCMs.

  • Fusion drive solution to activate Office for Mac 2011

Activating Office 2011  is a known issue for Fusion Drive Macs.
Activation is tied to the drive. According to Microsoft the solid state part of the Fusion Drive generates a new disk id every time the Mac is started. So Mac Office thinks it a new system at each startup and will require activation.
This solution was suggested by Microsoft Support. Please let us know if this works for you.
Follow the steps below to remove the “Thunderbolt bridge”:
    1. Click on the Apple icon and click on “System Preferences”
    2. Click on “Network”
    3. Look for “Thunderbolt Bridge” on the left side.
    4. Highlight the Bridge and click on the “-” sign to remove it.
    5. Restart the computer and enter the Product key for Microsoft Office. Restart again.

I don't normally advocate users re-install Office to fix an issue but in your case I think it's worth a try. The Mavericks update seems to have fixed the issue for most users. I would suggest the complete removal rather than the simple removal of dragging the Office folder in Applications to the trash.

  • Office for Mac 2011 - can't open old files

I am currently on Mac OS X v10.6.8.  I recently installed Office for Mac 2011.  I cannot open some of my old files.  I think the ones that use the old file names, e.g. .doc and .xls, rather than .docx and .xlsx.
Can anyone explain how I can open these files in my Office for Mac 2011?
    Many thanks!

  • Office for mac 2011 not working correctly on new Macbook Pro- Help

I have a MacBook Pro from September and had One to One transfer all files/programs (including 2008 Office).  I then purchased the Office for Mac 2011 program and they installed it (I guess they did not remove the older program).  It has never worked correctly and I have tried to contact Microsoft to no avail.
None of the documents open with Fonts intact (Word and Excel open up blank though the graphic elements show up.  I have to Select All and choose a font to make it show up.
Powerpoint is barely functional (none of the layouts actually show up when I select them, the sidebar of slides does not update as I type or try to change themese, etc.  And then when I type, the program freezes and then shuts down.
I have uninstalled 2008 and 2011 and then re-installed 2011 but the same issues occur.  Someone on the microsoft community told me to remove my duplicate fonts, I ddi that and the same issues still occur. My brother has the same laptop and Office for Mac 2011 and no issues.
Can someone help me basically try to start fresh- should I uninstall again? (I waas told that installing/uninstalling too many times can further the problem).
    Help!
    Thanks,
    Bernice

  • Is InDesign CS4 compatible with Office for Mac 2011?

Having trouble importing copy from 2011 Word docs to InDesign. Very small business cant justify updating from ID CS4. Just updated to Office for Mac 2011, however, and am now having trouble placing text into InDesign. Should I remove 2011 and go back to 2008?

As someone who never Places Office-formatted text in InDesign, I've also never considered issues of "compatibility" between any versions of the two application suites. Is the Office formatting critical? Unless you have some elaborate style-mapping import scheme in play, why not just save the Office document as text and Place that?

  • Problems with Office for Mac 2011 installation

I'm trying to install Office for Mac 2011 on my new (bought yesterday) Macbook Air
I entered my pin for the Office into the site and got my download link
I started to download it and it said it would take over 4 hours and when the download got to halfway (of 1GB) the installation stopped and the message given was 'You do not have permission to access the requested file' and this came up every time  I tried to restart it
I decided to re-install the program but was met with the same issue..
Can anybody offer any advice or explanation for this it would be greatly appreciated!

You may need to rebuild permissions on your user account. To do this, boot to your Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys while booting) and open Terminal from the Utilities menu. In Terminal, type:  ‘resetpassword’ (without the ’s), hit return, and select the admin user. You are not going to reset your password. Click on the icon for your Macs hard drive at the top. From the drop down below it select the user account which is having issues. At the bottom of the window, you'll see an area labeled Restore Home Directory Permissions and ACLs. Click the reset button there. The process takes a few minutes. When complete, restart.

  • Office for Mac 2011: Tips for speeding up Word when using tracked changes and comments?

I run a fresh installation of Office for Mac 2011 (v. 14.4.1) on a brand new Macbook Pro 13" Retina 2.4GHz with 16GB RAM running 10.9.2. The Office package is fully up-to-date.
I mainly use Word and find that it is extremely slow when I track changes. Documents need not be particularly large - even in a 30-page document after a few pages of tracks typing becomes a pain, in particular in comment bubbles where the text shows up letter-by-letter and only finish several seconds after I've stopped typing. Other programs run at the same time do not suffer from this horrible lag.
I have searched and seen that this is not uncommon so it appears that Microsoft's coders are not particularly well versed in coding for Mac.
My question is if other users have found ways to improve the situation, for instance by trashing plists or something like that? This is really driving me crazy
    Many TIA
    Philip

  • LibreOffice or Open Office vs Office for Mac 2011

I just bought a late 2011 MBP and I cannot use my Office for Mac 2008 software.  Wondering if I am taking a gamble by downloading either LibreOffice or OpenOffice or should I just buy the office for Mac 2011.  I really just need the Excel and Word compatibility. Advice from experienced users would be great!
