Error when launching vbscript at windows startup

I have a thin client running WES 7 Standard trying to launch a powerpoint file without loading the shell(explorer). I've done this with other applications like IE and Citrix Apps but am getting an error that I don't understand. Below is the script i'm using.
Set WshShell = Wscript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
CMD = "C:\slideshow.pptx /F"
strComputer = "."
WshShell.Run CMD,3,True
Do While (1)
Set objWMIService = GetObject("winmgmts:" _
& "{impersonationLevel=impersonate}!\\" & strComputer & "\root\cimv2")
Set colProcesses = objWMIService.ExecQuery _
("Select * from Win32_Process Where Name = 'pptview.exe'")
If colProcesses.Count = 0 Then
WshShell.Run CMD,3,True
End If
Wscript.Sleep (2000)
Loop
I've tried various combinations in the CMD field for launching the file. These include using a batch file to pointing to powerpoint viewer and using the command line switches to launch file. Every method so far gives me error dialog from the viewer saying
there was an error accessing "the location of the powerpoint file." I have placed this file all over windows and get the same error and even tried this with an administrator account. I suspect it may have to do with the way I am launching this script
but do not understand why as I can launch it manually and it works no problem.
I launch the script by modifying the the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Userinit key to point to a userinit.bat file.
@echo off
if not exist c:\%username%.lck goto Reg
Start c:\windows\system32\applaunch.vbs
exit
goto End
:Reg
start C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe
:End
Exit
Any ideas why I am getting this error? Any suggested alternatives? I am getting close to conceding and setting it up to launch after explorer loads because this particular machine and it's purpose won't be within easy reach of people accessing it but I do use
this method for other functions where we do not want explorer access available at all. i.e no start menu/taskbar loaded

What you are trying to do is not supported on Windows.
You mention a thin client.  This has nothing to do with thin clients.  Thin clients are just dumb monitors that run a remote RDP session.
If you are connecting to a terminal server there is a configuration in GP or in the terminal server configuration that let you specify an alternate shell.  If you are running this as a remote to a workstation then you need to specify the shell in the
user profile.  THis can be done through group policy or via a registry edit.
You cannot use a script for this and you cannot use an Office program without Explorer.  Office requires Explorer to run which is why you are getting that error.
Redirecting userinit for the whole machine will likely create many bad side effects as it is a fundamental process.  It is called multiple times during logon.  Replacing it with a batch file will cause you script to be executed multiple times.
Usually userinit is called at least three times.  In a domain with Group Policy it can be called a dozen times.  I am pretty sure the only reason for it being in the registry is to allow for debugging.
Another this folder.ng to knowis that userinit has to complete before many things in Office will work correctly dependin on you implementation.
You can load the powerpoint viewer and directly launch that with the file name from the
"startup"  .  You can also try and set the powerpoint viewer as the alternate shell.  It just might work because it is designed to run completely stand alone with no Office and is used in kiosks which generally run without Explorer.
You can also try to use IE to launch the ppt as it can host this with the viewer installed.  It can be set to fullscreen and it will re-launch  when exited just like Explorer does,

  • Java Error when launching BLS

Using xMII 11.5 SP3, one of our other xMII developers is getting the following Java error when launching the BLS editor:
    Unable to load resource: http://xmiid.oxy.com/Lighthammer/CMSLogicEditor/activation.jar
His computer was reimaged a couple of days ago with our standard image (Windows XP SP2, IE6 SP2).  It worked fine on his computer prior to the re-image.  He's reloaded Sun Java 1.4.2_01 on his computer (our company default is 1.4.1_01.)
I can't duplicate the error on any of our test computers - one of which was also recently re-imaged.
    Any ideas?
    David

    David,
So other standard imaged machines are running 1.4.2_01 and have no issues?  I would expect to see problems with the webstart cookie handling for that version, but I'm running _15....
Try clearing the Java WS cache on the problematic client instance to watch it try to download all the libraries fresh.
File...Preferences, reconfirm that the None radio button is selected on the General tab, and then on the Advanced tab, press the Clear Folder button.
You could also make sure before hitting the editor link in the Menu.jsp that there are no dead or leftover javaws processes running in the task manager.

Are you running the program from a Domain or Local Administrative type User Account? Apparently not Local Administrative by your description in the introduction?
Last time we had this type of issue, the user was coming from a Domain type of account. The issue remains in that thread unresolved although there was some intervention
    by Adobe Staff.
    https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1638947?start=0&tstart=0
Is yours a separate matter or are you related to the user in the other thread?
Please review and consider, supply more details, and then we can decide what next.

  • Error when launching promoted app from RemoteAPP

    Hi:
We are receiving this error when launching any application from RemoteAPP, we tried promoting Calculator, Notepad, etc. and received the same error as well.
    "Personalization:
This theme can't be applied to the desktop.
    Try clicking a different theme"
    Help!
    Thank you,
    Stangride

If you launch the app directly from the session hosts using the same account that your using with remoteapp what are you getting? Try and RDP to the session host when you attempt it. I would also check rsop.msc to see if you have any GPO or scripts that
    are manipulating themes.

  • After Effects Plugin Error when launching

I recently installed Red Giant Knoll Light Magic Pro plugin and get the following error when launching AE CS4 9.02 on a 2.53Ghz Intel Macbook Pro with 4Gb Ram and Snow Leopard.
After Effects has encountered an error.
    [/Chincillada/pro/ext/adobe/MediaCore/MediaLayer/VideoFilterHost/Make/Mac/../../Src/AEPlug inVideoFilterModule.cpp-107]
    then I get:
After Effects can't continue: An output contract violation has occured!
    then:
After Effects warning: Failed to initialize mediacore
I have also lodged a support ticket with Red Giant but wanted to see if anyone had experienced, or could shed any light on this error code.
    Thanks

As a start, move the KLF plug-in out of the shared MediaCore folder (Library:Apllication Support:Adobe and something; not on my Mac ATM) to the conventional AE plug-in folder (Applications:Adobe After Effects CS4:Support Files:Plug-Ins) I've reminded my friends at RG a hundred times, but their installer stil luses bad default locations. If that doesn't fix it, then indeed you have a problem. Which version of the plug-in are you using? Most complaints revolve around v2.5's GPU usage, which is on by default and causes a lot of trouble. Older versions do not do this, so they are more stable....

  • HT6413 I keep getting a installation pkg error when installing icloud for windows 7 on my pc.

I keep getting an windows installation error when installing icloud for windows 7.  I have tried installing manually without success.

There is a very long way which is removing anything related to Apple including stuff in the registry.
The short way is as follows. It worked for me.
I have seen that in the forum EXCEPT the registry trick which is missing and does the different.
    1. Remove the Apple account from Outlook.  In my case a me.com account.
    2. Disconnect the connection to ICloud in the control panel of version 3.1.
REBOOT and open Outlook to see that all traces of the email account and of ICloud are gone.
    3. Uninstall ICloud 3.1. I used REVO Uninstaller in Safe way mode. It removed some stuff in the registry from what I see; but not sure.
    4. Delete as much stuff as possible in the C \Program Files (x86) \Common Files \ Apple
and C\Program Files\Common Files \Apple.  My computer is 64 bits.
    5. Go to the registry by typing regedit.exe or simply type regedit in the Start Box. Search for ICloud.  I deleted TWO entries related to ICloud. Otherwise, you will still see the ICloud control panel despite the fact that you removed 3.1.
    6. then I was able to install ICloud 4 immediately.  Upon restarting it asked me my email and password and added itseft to Outlook like it was before. Be aware that you address book in Outlook could be deleted, so do an export before.

  • Error when launching lightroom 3.3 in windows

I am receiving an error when I try to open lighroom 3.3.  I've only had the program installed for a few days on my newly installed windows 7, 64-bit machine.  All windows and adobe updates installed, as of yesterday.  The last time I used lightroom, I edited a file "141.jpg" that came from my SD card plugged into the computer.  I dont recall saving this file, as I was just playing with settings.  I closed the program and now, a day later, I click on lightroom and a text box appears on my windows desktop that reads "Lightrrom - Opening Catalog: IMG_0141.JPG.lrcat"  Immediately after, an error box appears and says Adobe lightroom has stopped working, with the only option to close.   I have searched the forums and was unable to find the user/appdata/prefs folder to delete (using explorer and the search function).  I have uninstalled twice and reinstalled the 64bit then 32bit versions with the same error.  I have also deleted the lightroom folder that appears in "My Pictures" folder prior to the second reinstall.  I just bought the serial and put it in yesterday and now it doesnt work!   Please help. Thanks

This situation arises when you try to create a new catalog from within LR, and then pointing to an existing file instead of entering a new folder name to be used for the catalog (I've filed a bug against it).
You only can solve this in two ways (Alt/Ctrl-Key during start does not help):
    1) Rename the existing JPG
Rename the file IMG_0141.JPG (if you know where it resides) to something like IMG_0141_Ori.JPG
Start LR, this will start LR in a fresh, new catalog called "IMG_0141.JPG"
File/Open Recent to open your previous catalog
Delete the newly created folder IMG_0141.JPG
Rename the file IMG_0141_Ori.JPG back to IMG_0141.JPG
    2) By deleting/renaming your preferences file
    Rename/Delete the LR preferences file
(File locations see this KB article)
Start LR, this will start LR with default preferences/catalog
    I would recommend solution 1.
