Essbase Cube import to Oracle

Doees anyone know how I can write code to import an Essbase cube into Oracle?

The problem you have is that Essbase is a cubed database so trying to access it using a database link from Oracle is going to be difficult. Does Essbase provide an ODBC connector? If it does you might be able to use the Oracle database's heterogenous services to connect. Basically you would be creating a database link to the Essbase database using ODBC.
As I day, where I see difficulties are in the look and feel of Essbase, because its not a SQL database, and in obtaining an ODBC connector.
As for scheduling an export from Essbase, you'd have to check with them on that. Most databases have such a feature so I would suspect there must be a way. Have you tried asking Hyperion about exporting and for an ODBC connector?

Essbase cube Import error

Hello,
I'm trying to Import Essbase cubes into RPD through File->Import->from Multi-dimensional.. using Oracle BI Administration Tool, but its giving the error 'Login fails due to invalid login credentials'.
I'm able to connect to 'Essbase Administration Services' using the same credentials. Do I need to do any configurations to import cubes into the OBIEE rpd. Can anyone tell me how to fix this error.

Thanks for your reply. Here are the details for your points mentioned,
1. OBIEE -10.1.3.4, Essbase Client 9.3.1(Installed in the client machine to access Essbase cubes), Hyperion Server Version- 9.3.1
2. Yes I'm able to see the cube outline and variables and there are no errors. Also I'm trying to import the Sample cube which comes with the installation of Hyperion applications
3. I'm connecting through the 'admin' user who have full rights
Please let me know anyother things I need to check.

Drill through with OLAP Universe on Essbase cube

Hi all
How can I achieve drill through from an Essbase cube to an Oracle database?
Is there an option in OLAP universes to achieve this?
If not do I have alternative options?

Hi,
There is no way to activate drill-through from Essbase to any other database within OLAP universes.
If you are using Web Intelligence you have 2 alternatives:
<li> The first one is to create 2 data providers (1 on Essbase and 1 on Oracle) and synchronize them.
This is not really a drill thorugh operation but you have both data sources in sync in the same document.
<li> The second option is to create 2 Web Intelligence documents (1 on Essbase and 1 on Oracle) and then parameterize the Essbase document to use Opendoc capabilities (hyperlink) to dril-through on the Oracle document.

Imported essbase cube into Oracle BI

Environment : Oracle BI EE and Oracle Hyperion Essbase 11.1.3
I have created Oracle BIEE dashboards using ESSBASE cube as source
I am following the below steps :
Step 1 : from Administrative Tool i imported essbase cube into the physical layer
Step 2 : i drag the cube in to the Business Model layer and Presentation Layer
Step 3 : while creating Oracle BI dashboards in Answers(Presentation Service), Metadata is perfectly Comming but the Measure values should always be empty.
I followed the link for creating and configuring the the Oracle BIEE Dashboards with Oralce Hyperion Essbase 11.1.3

Have you set the dimension in your Essbase cube that stores the data facts (Amount Values) as an "Accounts" dimension? If not, do that. You'll need to re-import the whole thing in the BI Administration tool again and then drag it across to the BMM and Presentation layers.

Windows error when importing Essbase cube into OBIEE

Hi all:
This question is perhaps more relevant to the OBIEE forum, but I put it up there a few days ago and got no response. So now I'm hoping to get some help on this side of BI land!
My issue is that I'm trying to import an Essbase cube (system 11) into BI Admin Tool, but whenver I go to "Import from multidimensional" and hit "OK" after entering in the essbase server name and log/pwd, the BI Admin tool crashes. I get no error msg except for a couple of errors I see in the Windows event log:
1. Faulting application path: C:\OracleBI\server\Bin\AdminTool.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Oracle\Middleware\EPMSystem11R1\products\Essbase\EssbaseClient\bin\essapinu.dll
2. Faulting application path: C:\OracleBI\server\Bin\AdminTool.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\ntdll.dll
I'm running a standalone OBIEE 10.1.3.4 on my local machine (Windows 7 32-bit) and the Essbase Server is on a separate Windows 2008 machine. I can ping between machines and all ports are open on the Essbase machine, so I don't think this is a network related issue. Also, my OBI RPD is working fine in all other respects. I have other data sources working in there with no trouble. My Essbase server is also working fine. I also tried to do this in a new RPD in case the old one was corrupted, but get the same issue.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You must have the Essbase client installed on the same machine where your OBI Administration Tool is installed. This should get you past the error that you are receiving and should fix your problem. Since you are running 32-bit just download the 32-bit Essbase client from Oracle. You will most likely need to run download the required files to install the Essbase client and with Hyperion 11x you should be familiar with that required software matrix since you have Essbase running on a seperate server already.
But now looking at your post I see that you state that one of the paths in your error is C:\Oracle\Middleware\EPMSystem11R1\products\Essbase\EssbaseClient\bin\essapinu.dll. The path C:\Oracle\Middleware is usually seen in Hyperion EPM 11.1.2. So, are you running Essbase 11.1.2 and OBIEE 10g or are you running OBIEE 11g? You'll need to specificy as OBIEE 11g can only interface with Hyperion Essbase 11.1.2 at present. And if I recall correctly the 11.1.2 Essbase client does not work with OBIEE 10g. Please clarify on these points.
Let me know if that helps fix your issue. If that doesn't fix it post back here and we see if we can keep you going forward.

Error encountered while loading data into an Essbase cube from oracle DB

Hi All,
I am trying to load data into an Essbase cube from Oracle db. Essbase is installed in an 64 bit HP-UX machine and oracle database on HP -UX 11.23 B server. While performing the above I am getting the below error messages:
K/INFO - 1021013 - ODBC Layer Error: [08001] ==> [[DataDirect][ODBC Oracle Wire Protocol driver][Oracle]ORA-01034: ORACLE not available
ORA-27101: shared memory realm does not exist
HP-UX Error: 2: No such file or directory].
OK/INFO - 1021014 - ODBC Layer Error: Native Error code [1034] .
ERROR - 1021001 - Failed to Establish Connection With SQL Database Server. See log for more information.
Can you please help me out in identifying the issue, as why it could have occured , because of network problem or is there anything related to databse?

Multiple source columns from Oracle DB to Hyperion Essbase cube

Hi Experts ,
We have a Source as oracle table to the target Hyperion Essbase Cube(Planning) 11.1.2 using ODI 11g.
Right now my issue is We need to map multiple columns from Oracle DB to One Dimension in Essbase (Planning).
For example -> * In Oracle table i have columns as Name,Volume,unit and item *
In Essbase the dimension called "*CatDefinition has lower level members as Name,Volume,unit and item * "
Now using ODI ,* I want to map the oracle table columns(Multiple) to the dimension(Catdefinition) ? * Please suggest me with idea to achieve multiple column mapping to the single dimension in Essbase .

Do you even need FDM? You could build a load rule in Essbase directly. If you need to map, then you would register the Essbase target adapter.

Integrating Essbase cubes with Oracle Tables in BI Server

I'm trying to link together data from an aggregated Essbase Cube with some static table data from our oracle system. Both the essbase and oracle data exist correctly in their own right in the physical, business and presentation levels. Aggragted data is client sales, static data is client details
Within the OBIEE Administration tool I've tried to drag the physical oracle table for clients onto the clients essbase section in the business area, and it seems to work OK, until you try and report on them together and I get the following error:
State: HY000. Code: 10058. [NQODBC] [SQL_STATE: HY000] [nQSError: 10058] A general error has occurred. [nQSError: 42043] An external aggregate is found in an outer query block. (HY000)
Can anyone advise on what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks Christian I found some very useful articles (one or two by you) - I'll have to look harder on the net before posting.
One thing I found out, with respect to vertical federation, that others may benefit from, is that I fuond it much easier to start from the most detailed level and then attach the less detailed source rather start with the less detailed and add the additional on.

Importing Essbase cube in OBIEE

Apparently it turns out that the Accounts dimension Hierarchy needs to be changed to type 'Value' for the measures to start working.

Linking existing Essbase Cube to Planning

My business team created an Essbase cube, and now they want us to link that cube to Planning.
I opened an SR and I was told the following:
1. Ensure you have a test environment to create this new Planning app before moving to production.
2. Create a new Planning app in the test environment with the same name as the production Essbase cube.
3. Export all Essbase data.
4. Copy over the outline to the new Essbase cube in the test env. You can copy over the rest of the Essbase objects as needed (calc scripts, report scripts, etc).
5. Import the Essbase data into the new Essbase cube.
6. refresh Planning
Everything went well except for Step 6. When I do the refresh from Planning, the Essbase Outline gets updated with the one from Planning which doesn't have anything since it was just created.
I need to refresh the Planning Outline with the the one from Essbase that does have the data the users have been working on.

Hi,
You will have to define all the dimension membes etc to Planning. Because Essbase is the database, it will be updated with planning information... There are no shortcuts.. But you can export your dimension members from existing Essbase and load into planning using HAL/ODI/DIM..
Use outline extractor tool to get the existing dimensionality and create 1 metadata file per dimensions.
I believe Oracle support thought that you want to create a new Essbase cube from existing Planning cube.

Problem with Integration Essbase cube with obiee

Hi Everyone,
I am in a OBIEE where i need to use Essbase cubes as source for generating OBIEE reports.I am able to import the cube successfuly into Physical layer and when i drag it into BMM layer its getting splitted up into Facts,dimensions and hierachies. No measure in fact table of cube in BMM layer. What i got to know was all the meaures what all needed for reporting are into one hierachy and when i get it into BMM layer its getting converted into Dimension. Here i tried to generate reports by making dimension as fact but no use.
Please suggest me ,any other ways to get it.

Sort in date order from Essbase cube source

Hi everyone,
I have an Essbase cube which I'm displaying the data from in OBIEE. Within the cube one of the dimensions is a date ( set as a time dimension ).
It has several generations:
Gen2 - Year, 2010
Gen3 - Year/Quarter, 2010/Q1
Gen4 - Year/Month, 2010/01
Gen5 - Day/Month/Year, 26/01/2010
If I produce a report filtered on the Year, say 2009, and display the full date, it puts all twelve 1st's of the month first, then the 2nds, and so on. I can resolve this by putting the Year/Month field into the report and sort on that, then the full date, but I really only want the date in chronological order.
Can anyone advise on the best way to achieve this?

And this is one of the reasons why OBIEE/Essbase integration is still #1 on the [Dont Try This At Home Kids|http://majendi.blogspot.com/2009/06/dont-try-this-at-home-kids.html] list.
One of the most basic facts about the current integration - which is often disregarded - is that dimension levels and hence their contained members come across as pure VARCHARs. Sort order-wise this gives you a standard alpha-numeric sort order by default.
However there's a workaround which we discussed just last week: Oracle BI import Essbase cube (problem on the months)
Essbase defines the sort order. Otherwise it's alpha-numeric.

Show key content of essbase cube in BIEE

After importing Essbase cube into BI admin tool, I can query its content in BI Answer.
But when I display the dimensional content(says, Gen5,Loc1), it displays Alias content rather than the key content. What should I do in BI admin tool to show the key content? or are any settings required in Essbase?

That's expected behaviour. As soon as there's an Alias, it gets used. Otherwise, it defaults back to the acutal member name.
Yes, you can change this, but only for the lowest level of the hierarchy. We discussed this already some times togehter with the alternatives.

Essbase Cube Build is hung once in a while

Hello All -
We've nightly essbase cube build (BSO/ASO both) on Essbase 11.1.1.3 installed on Unix HP-UX B.11.31. There are total 30 cubes and 7-8 cubes run in parallel most of the times. There is separate MaxL script for each cube and they are called in proper order through a scheduler. We've seen once in a while that one cube build (Maxl script) goes in hung state does nothing. This happens once in a month or so and it's not to a specific cube. It happens to any of the cubes. We went through the log files and didn't find anything.
We've noticed below instances while one cube build is in hung state when other 6-7 cubes are running fine in parallel.
1. Connecting to the server
2. Import dimension/data
Do we need to check some setup in Unix or config files? If any of you had faced this situation before, please let me know. That would really help!

I have seen a similar issue with our Essbase cube. Although we only have one cube. It does the night update routine just fine and users are logged in and working when all of sudden the cube freezes up. I can login to EAS, but when I select my server it just hangs. I can login into Workspace/Planning or Excel Add-In but when I select an Application, it just hangs.
We are also on a Unix box. We've checked all the logs and there is no error message indicating what might be wrong. The second time it occured we logged a ticket with Oracle and had them online. They checked our logs and found nothing. We uploaded all our log files to them for their team to take a look. They suspect our Essbase Agent wasn't running...not sure what the Agent is. That was a week ago and haven't heard back from Oracle.
To solve the problem we stopped and started the Essbase services only and the application came back. No data was lost or corrupted.
I've never seen this before. I've worked for two other employers with Essbase and both were on Window's boxes and never experienced this issue. First time I've worked with the software on a Unix box...
