Event from an Event in a while loop

Let's say I am in a while loop in an event. During this time, I would like to trigger another event. Is this possible?

Herny,
you are running into caveats of the event structure. Esp. this caveat is the one you have implemented.
I recommend you not to use more than a single event structure in your whole project. That is, of course, not suitable for certain projects, but in general a very good advice since it reduces the chances to run into issues very much.
Furthermore, please note that events lock the frontpanel by default. See here for more information.
hope this helps,
Norbert
[EDIT] Taking a closer look into your right loop/event structure/loop - construct: your vi creates an infinite loop eating up 100% CPU load when pressing Boolean 3. Never ever do that!

  • Wrong use of "Scan From String" function in a while loop?

    Hi,
    I've got a "Scan From String" function inside a while loop. On the first iteration it converts correctly the number passed by the input string (for example 4) But on the second one it has only spaces (one or more \s) as input string.
    I expected to obtain a zero as output (as it does always that it can not make any conversions, as I am supposed to) but indeed, i subtracts 1 from the previous number (according to the number indicated as example I would obtain a 3 as output)
    What's wrong with this?
    Does the function fails on this case?
    The rest of the diagram o the VI is expected to manage a 0 on that situation, like others in which the conversion is not made.
    Andres.

    I have simplified the VI evading calls to other VIs and trying to reproduce the mistake.
    The type of string I introduce to reproduce the mistake is:
    clock 3 (30) clock (40)
    Forgetting to introduce a number between the second "clock" and the following parenthesis, I would manage it programmatically with code that isn't included.
    Then "Scan From String" is supposed to do not make a conversion. But it leaves a 2 as output (in this example)
    I have realised, unbelievable but true, that it has matter with the number I substract to the output number (if it were 2, I would obtain 1 as output and so on)
    Excluding that, I got the conversion made before as output, 3, on the second time that "Scan From String" executes. But, how can this func
    tion as bad?
    I am using LV4 on an old PC. I have tried to reproduce it with LV6 and it works. But it isn't desirable for me, I would have to convert a lot of VIs and surely I will find a lot of errors due to the conversion (I have already tried)

  • Use event structure and while loop in parallel

    Hello, I would like to use an event structure in parallel with a while loop. I have a camera that needs to constantly take pictures and I have that setup in the while loop. I also however need to do other functions in conjunction with the picture taking. I have about 50 or so events that need to have access to while the pictures are taken. Is there any way to do this? If not is there any way to have a global stop variable that is attached to all 50 of the events. I know I can do this the hard way and have each boolean event in the event structure be attached to the while loop stop control. This is however very inefficient. I would also like to know if I can simply use a mouse click as the stop of the while loop. Am I able to have a variable that goes from false to true on mouse click without using the event structure to do this? Thanks.

    Yes, just place the event structure in a second while loop.
    Add a stop button to the other while loop and add an event for the stop button to stop both loops. For a simple example, see my VI posted here:
    http://forums.ni.com/ni/board/message?board.id=170&message.id=176367&jump=true
    Simply add more event cases as needed.

  • How can I put a time delay between specific events in a while loop?

    How can I put a time delay between specific events within the same while loop? I'm already using the "wait" command to control the overall loop iteration speed. But I want to time the individual events as well.

    Hi Jesse,
    You can use a flat sequence. In each box you can put your individual events and attached wait.
    Don't forget to reduce your total loop time of the time you added in the individual sequences.

  • Handling events in a while loop

    In a while loop, I need to stop the loop after a change of state from false to true or true to false or I can do this by detecting a certain string from the serial port. Seems like I should be able to do this simply by using a counter which is edge triggered. Please Help.

    I would love to help but you have provided very little for me to go on.
    RE: your boolean, if you recall the previous state and compare to the current using an exclusive OR operation, It should return a true when the previous and current values are different.
    On the string thing, you could compare the read string with a constant and get a true when they match.
    The above are simply lame ideas that may be of use. If you could go into greater detail, I may be of greater assistance.

  • How do i stop a while loop

    I'm new to labview and I'm having a problem stopping a while loop (running windows XP/2000 with the student edition of labview express 7).
    I'm doing a data acquisition program where I'm constantly reading in voltage and comparing it to a set point value, when the input voltage goes above the set point, i want the while loop to stop. How do I do this? I already have an LED going on when the criteria is met, but I'm not sure how to actually stop the loop (i.e. change the iteration value from true to false-i guess). If anyone can please assist me with this I would very much appreciate it.
    I've included my program too.

    Hello Everyone-
    I've just posted a message about stopping a while loop and it was answered accurately and quickly- thanks to LV_Pro and PauloM- thanks much- its nice too see that there are many helpful people out there! Unfortunately, I have 2 more questions to ask of the forum.
    My application is almost completed- I just need to add an elapsed time counter that will tell me how long it took for my LED to trigger (from my set point-i.e. when from 0:00:00 until when my loop stopped).
    Now I've found a perfect elapsed time counter on the NI web site contributed from Mike Hall from Ohmeda Medical- the page is here.... http://sine.ni.com/apps/we/niepd_web_display.display_epd4?p_guid=D37E2493DC333076E034080020E74861&p_node=DZ52032&p_source=external
    So my first question is, it looks like I can just extend the while loop box in my 'CO detector... .vi' and paste just the code from the 'elapsed time.vi' while loop into my loop and I will be set- but do I need to change my wait until next multiple to be a 1000 too in my program? Probably, but I'm not sure hence the question- or other ideas would appreciated.
    My second question is now that my application is complete (after I add the elapsed time above), I need to exactly duplicate this process for 7 other DAQ inputs (i.e. right now I'm using only 1 of 8 analog inputs on the FP-AI110). So should I make my 'CO detector.. .vi' a separate program (I remember reading something about this in one of the posts earlier).
    Any help is very appreciated.
    Thank you again,
    Daniel

  • Stuck inside an infinite While Loop :-/

    Hi all,
    When I write this program using the top-down structural method, it runs fine but when I use the call method inside the while loop, it doesn't test the "if" condition. It becomes a never-ending loop. :-/
    import java.util.Random;
    public class WhileLoop {
          public static void main(String[] args) {
            int random1;
            Random die1 = new Random();
            random1 = die1.nextInt(6) + 1;
            WhileLoop r = new WhileLoop();
            while (random1 != 5) {
              if (random1 != 5) {
               r.doRandom();
              if (random1 == 5) {
                System.out.println("you win! ");
             int random1;
          public void doRandom() {
             Random die1 = new Random();
             random1 = die1.nextInt(6) + 1;
             System.out.println("random1 = " + random1);
      }If I replace the line " r.doRandom(); " with " random1 = die1.nextInt(6) + 1; System.out.println("random1 = " + random1); " the program will check the "if" condition and stops when it finds the number 5. What's wrong with my code?
    Thanks for your help.

I tried using a 'return' value from the doRandom method and use that value inside the "if" condition, but it also does not terminate the loop. The only way it's going to work is by using the solution DrLaszlo gave? Is there any other way to do this by using a call method?

  • I am using the "Menu Selection With Events.vi" example alongside other while loops, When I select exit from the new menu it stops the other while loops but not the menu/event while loop

    The event driven menu example works fine and I've integrated it into my application. I have built in simple local vars to link menu selections to existing GUI buttons. The problem is that I cannot get the File-Exit menu option to switch off/terminate the application. The [1] "Stop": Value Change panel of the event structure simply switches off the other while loops but leaves the event while loop running. Add a while loop to the axample using a local var from the event while loop to terminate 2nd while loop to get the effect.
    Help appreciated, Chris

    Attached you will find a modified version of your VI.
    I documented what I did on the block diagram.You were right on you just needed to add a variable with a true wired to it.
    Have fun with it.

    I want to pass along a couple of tips that will get you more and better response on this list.
    1) There is an un-written rule that says more "stars" is better than just one star. Giving a one star rating will probably eliminate that responder from individuals that are willing to anser your question.
    2) If someone gives you an answer that meets your needs, reply to that answer and say that it worked.
    3) If someone suggests that you look at an example, DO IT! LV comes with a wonderful set of examples that demonstate almost all of the core functionality of LV. Familiarity with all of the LV examples will get you through about 80% of the Certified LabVIEW Developer exam.
    4) If you have a question first search the examples for something tha
    t may help you. If you can not find an example that is exactly what you want, find one that is close and post a question along the lines of "I want to do something similar to example X, how can I modify it to do Y".
    5) Some of the greatest LabVIEW minds offer there services and advice for free on this exchange. If you treat them good, they can get you through almost every challenge that can be encountered in LV.
    6) If English is not your native language, post your question in the language you favor. There is probably someone around that can help. "We're big, we're bad, we're international!"

  • SubVI with while loop + event structure not working in multi tab VI

    Hello Everyone,
    I am developing an interface for the control of a prober using Labview 2012, and I am stuck with some issue.
    To start with I provide you with a simplified version of my control interface VI, and with the sub-VI used to build and manage the wafer maps.
    The VI consists of several tabs: Prober Initialization, Wafer Handling, Wafer Map, Status, Error.
    The sub-VI can:
    1/ initialize the grid to display the map (sub VI Init Grid not provided here)
    2/ import XY coordinates from a txt file (sub VI Wafer Map Import)
    3/ display the coordinates and index of the die below the cursor
    4/ and when a die position is double clicked, and the boolean "Edit Wafer Map" is true, then the user can change the state (color) of the die between On-wafer die and Selected Die
    My issue:
    If I use the sub-VI by itself, it works fine. However when I use it as a sub-VI in the tab "Wafer Map", the map does not build up and I can no further use the embedded functionalities in the sub-VI.
    I suspect the while loop + event structure of the sub-VI to be the bottleneck here.
    However I don't know which way to go, that's why I'd be glad to have some advice and help here.
    Thank you.

    Hi NitzZ,
    Thank you for your reply.
    I tried to save the VIs in LV10, please tell me if you can open them now.
    Inside he event structure there is quite some code, and since I don't want to make the main vi too bulky, I would like to keep it as a sub-VI.
    As you can see from the sub-VI, the event structure is used for extracting cursor position and tracking the double click action. These events are linked, through a property node, to the image "Wafer Map" which is passed to the main vi through connector pane.
    All values are passed this way as well (through connector pane). Is there another way?
    Maybe "refnum", but I don't really understand how to use them...
    If I use the event structure in the main vi, the wafer map is still not working. I tried it earlier.
    To implement the multi tab front panel, I used a tab control, and a for loop + case structure. For each element of the case structure, there is a corresponding action.
    For the case where I put the code (element=2) for Wafer Map, I also control the execution of the code with a case structure activated by the button "REFRESH". Otherwise I end up with a freezing of the panel right after the start.
    I hope these comments help you understand better.
    Regards,
    Florian

  • Event controll: How to stop a running while loop inside a event structure

    Hello,
    I have some problems with controlling a while loop inside a event structure (see attached VI).
    I habe 3 buttons ("Start Measurement, Stop Measurement, Quit Program"). When a measurement is running, it should be possible to stop the measurement by clicking on "Stop Measurement", but this does not work.
    Has anyone an idea?

    Hello,
    Try not to use while loops inside a Event structure.
    My approach is using two While loops (one will have only the Event structure).
    I had to use to Flag buttons that make it a bit more complicated but i am sure somebody will come up with a better idea, or you might want to have a think about it yourself.
    Have a look on the modified version on the attachment.
    Once you are happy how it works then you can Hide the 2 flag buttons from the Front Pannel by going to Block diagram right-click the indicators and choose option "Hide Indicators/Controls"
    I did it in LV 8.6 so i hope you can open it on your PC if not i can downgrade it.
    If you have any problem let us know.

  • While loop inside a event structure

    Dear
    I have no much concepts on event structure.
    Let's assume there is a dialog box with Okay and Cancel button.
    I put the event structure for Okay and Cancel button.
    In Okay event, there is a while loop for detecting some data continuously.
    In this case, I want to use Cancel button to stop the while loop during the detection.
    How can I do to receive signal from the Cancel button?
    Thank you in advance.

    I'm not sure that the event structure should be used to handle that situation : while the OK event is executing, either the Front panel is locked and new occuring event will be stored until the OK event is completed (so the Cancel button action will not be detected !) or the Front panel is unlocked (see below *) and the Cancel button action will stop the loop, but the Cancel button event case will not be executed, since the event has already been processed in the OK case !
    You should probably use a single button to run/stop the loop, as shown in the attachment
    * While editing the event case, unmark the "Lock front panel for this event complete" at the bottom. But of course, the code in the cancel case will not run, since the event occuredMessage Edité par chilly charly le 03-31-2007 05:27 PM

  • Multiple event structure in a while loop

    Dear All,
                   I had a multiple event structure inside a while loop. The purpose of doing so is because I had a few 2D picture on the front panel. I would like to detect which 2D pictures had been click using the mouse down event structure for 8 of my 2D pictures.
                  The problem that I faced now is that when I of the event case or one of the 2D pictures had been click, it will not exit the while loop. I had to click on all the 8 2D pictures before it will exit the loop.
                  I had uncheck the under the "Edit Event" --> "Lock Front Panel (defer processing of user action) until this event case completes". But I am still stuck inside the loop.
                  Each 2D picture will perform different action therefore I cannot have an event case of all 2D pictures inside else I would know which 2D picture had been click.
                 Is there any other way out of this situation? Pls help. Thanks a lot

    A producer/consumer architecture (look at the examples that ship with LabVIEW) is comprised of two parallel while loops. One loop contains the event structure. The other contains your consumer which is basically a queued state machine. It receives messages from the producer via a queue. Your event structure can register a separate event for each 2D picture control or it can use a single event that would determine which spefic controls was clicked on. This is a more general approach and expands easily. Here is a basic example of what I am talking about.

  • I noticed that any other code in my while loop only gets called at the 1st time through the loop and when a event is executed.

    HI there!
    I have a while loop, in which i am reading from/writing  to a compact rio. Furthermore, i added a event structure, its the 1st time i'm using it so i'm a bit lost at times.
    I have the event structure set up for all my button i want to trigger an event. However, i have some other code which i would also like to be executed, evebn though no event has been executed.
    I noticed that the other stuff in the loop only gets executed the 1st time through the loop and when an event is triggered.
    My question therefore is, how do i get the other stuff to execute as well?
    Please advise.
    Thanks.
    Regards,

    Put the other code in the timeout event case.  Wire some positive value to the timeout hourglass input.  That code will execute everytime a timeout occurs.  For instance, if you wire 100 into the timeout, the code in that case will execute every 100 mSec.
