EVERYTHING'S GONE...sorta...PLEASE HELP!!!!

Greetings.
Tonight, as I walked home from work listening to my relatively new (and nearly full) 40GB iPod (which was just sitting in my pocket) as always, the music stopped. The iPod looked fine, but when I went to start playing music again, it skipped from song to song in the playlist (without playing any of them) and then went back to the main menu. I tried resetting it, but it wouldn't reset. When I got home, I plugged it into my computer. Suspiciously, iTunes didn't launch automatically. And when I opened iTunes, it asked me if I want to set up my new iPod! I hit cancel and ejected it, and now all the playlists and music files are gone. iTunes also says that it's empty (no song files show up when I select the iPod icon), but also says that more than 36 GB are used...so I know the music is still in there!
What does all of this mean? Why aren't my song files showing up anymore? I've only had this iPod about a month--it was a warranty replacement for one that died--and only recently finished rebuilding all of my playlists and everything. Can I get it all back? Why did this happen? If I restore it and start from scratch--besides being unbelieveably aggravating--how do I know it won't just happen again?

Do you keep all your music in iTunes? If so, then it shouldn't be a problem to erase the iPod, as everything will be restored again. If you manually put songs on your iPod, however, then you'll probably want to retrieve the files before such drastic measures (it sounds like something happened to the iPod's database, which won't affect the files still residing in the hard drive). Download a third-party iPod extraction utility (iPodRip is quite nice, though it may not work if the iPod database is corrupted) and copy the songs into iTunes, then restore the iPod and re-sync.
For future reference, you posted in the wrong forum; there are no 40GB Fifth Generation iPods.

Woke up to OS X Utilities window with 4 options. Tried repairing discs, and ended up re-installing the OS and now everything is gone. Please help.

Woke up to OS X Utilities window up on my screen with 4 options. One was backup from Time Machine, another was to re-install the OS, the third was to open Safari for help, and the last was to repair discs. I tried repairing all of the discs including the two external hard drives I had attached and it said that they were all good. Then I proceeded to re-install the OS, but it would only allow me to install Mavericks and I had already upgraded to Yosemite. I tried restarting with a safe boot and it got stuck half way for more than an hour, so I just did a hard restart. Without a recent Time Machine backup, I decided to try re-installing the OS. The funny thing is that it would only let me install it on my external HD and not the internal HD - and there was a message saying that a newer OS was on the internal HD and so it could not be installed there. So after it was installed, it started up like it was a brand new mac - asking me for my apple ID, wifi, etc. And now I have nothing on the computer - no programs, files, anything. And the Macintosh HD showed up in the finder, but it ejected itself and is no longer viewable. Any ideas on how I can get this back to normal??? I am pretty desperate at this point.

You have 10.6 on that machine, I suggest you stick with it for performance, third party hardware and software reasons as long as possible.
Consider 10.8 (not 10.7) when it's released, because 10.7 and 10.8 will require a new investment in software and newer third party hardware as it requires newer drivers the old machines won't have. (forced upgrade because of software, really nice of them)

Far as your Safari problem do these things until it's resolved:
1: Software Update fully under the Apple menu.
2: Check the status of your plug-ins and update (works for all browsers) also install Firefox and see if your problems continue. You should always have at least two browsers on the machine just in case one fails.

Did you just delete them from iTunes, or did you also tell it to delete the music files from your Mac ? If just from iTunes then they might still be stored under /Users/username/Music - if they are then you can add them back via File > Add To Library
If not, then whether you can redownload music depends upon what country that you are in. If you can redownload music (and if you haven't changed countries since buying it and it's still in your country's store) then it should show under the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store homepage :
If you can't redownload music then do you have a copy of it on your backup of your downloads/library that you can copy it back from ?

9 years of photos gone! Please help!

I have always uploaded ALL of my photos onto my work computer.... 9 years going on 10. Our tech guy realized my machine was never being backed up. The only connection I can make is they disappeared when he started backing up via Time Machine. I have tried everything I've been suggested to do on the forums and nothing has worked. It's as if everything dated before August 1, 2013 is gone forever. All of my files in my entire computer are still there, only Iphoto was affected. When I go into time machine to restore... the latest I can restore from is August 1, there are no backups before this date. Can somebody PLEASE help me??

Were the photos in an iPhoto Library? If so what version of iPhoto and system are you running? What do you see when you launch iPhoto to open your library? What size is the library as determined by the Finder?
There's a good chance that your image files are still in the library package but the library is damage and can't display them. Your answers to these questions will tell us how to proceed.

I cant change it, it's getting annoying, something has happened and I dont know how to change it back.

i have tried easy setup settings,
settings for FCP - but the exported video always comes out in a box now.
i have tried them all, and set them to really weird things,
i have messed it up and I dont know what to do......
is there a way to change FCP settings back to default?

Final Cut Pro rule number one: The Sequence settings must match the characteristics of your source footage.
You can't just drop any old video into a particular setup and expect it to work.

EVERYTHING IS LOST! PLEASE HELP!

Ok, so I go to open my iMovie project and am greeted, horrifically, by this:
"A Project File is Missing
The file “_” couldn’t be opened and is being skipped. Click “Ignore All” to skip any remaining missing file messages."
All the editing progress in the project is gone, and all my clips (not in their edited form) have been moved to the trash. Now what I've noticed is that if I go into show package contents, and then go into cache, all my progress still exists as Timeline Movie.mov but it's all as one video file and I'm afraid to mess with it because it's absurdly small (a few hundred kilobytes). I think what caused this is that the external hard drive my project is saved on was removed, plugged back in, and then saved to. PLEASE HELP ME GET IT BACK TO HOW IT WAS, I'M BEGGING YOU, I've looked everywhere else and have found nothing of help.

First of all, I would restart your computer and see if the problem replicates.
If that fails, open up your Package Contents folder and you should see in there a file called (movie title).iMovieproj. Open that, and if your movie is intact save it under a different name and you are good to go. There is also another file titled (Movie title)~.iMovieproj. If the previous file that you opened does not contain an intact movie, try this one.

APPLICATIONS FOLDER HAS GONE BESERK - PLEASE HELP!

For the past few weeks, most of my apps no longer are visible in the applications folder.
The apps work; finder shows them as residing in the apps folder.
If I go to the applications folder, though, all I see are the apps with names that begin with "A", plus the CALCULATOR app.
Everything else [Quicktime, MS Office, etc.] does not appear.
However, all the applications are working, and finder shows them as being located in the apps folder.
Today, I found I cannot ADD new apps to my apps folder.
It will not accept new apps.
I am trying to install dashline 2.0 [a new app for me].
When I drag the app to the apps folder, the time bar appears and runs through the move.
However, the app never appears in the apps folder.
When I search in finder, dashline does NOT show up as being in the app folder.
If I try again, to drag the app to the apps folder, I get a prompt telling me the app is already in the apps folder.
I googled these problems but all the answers I find have to do with setting up new computers, transferring from one computer to another, or 'losing' apps from the computer altogether.
Here is the info on my computer.
