Exif info from JPEG exports from LR 5.6 doesn't display in some photo viewers

I've noticed that when I export JPEGs from LR, the Exif for things like the aperture, shutter speed, and exposure doesn't display in photo viewers like Gallery and QuickPic on my Android tablet.  Using an Exif reader, the fields are there.  I think I have traced it to:  if the original image imported into Lightroom was a jpg, the Exif will display.  If the original image was raw (NEF), the Exif won't display.   Has anyone else seen this?

I examined your sample .jpg with Exiftool, the most authoritative metadata tool available, and I also used the following tools to examine the metadata:
OS X 10.9.5: Finder, Preview, Photoshop CC 2014, LR 5.6, exiv2
Windows 8.1: File Explorer, Irfanview 4.38
All of these were able to display the EXIF metadata, including exposure information, without problems, and Exiftool didn’t flag any nonconformities.  So it seems that it’s the Android apps that aren’t conforming to the standards.
Looking at the internal structure of the LR-produced .jpg, I suspect that it is producing a layout of the IFD0, IFD1, and ExifIDF sections that the Android apps aren’t expecting (because the developers didn’t follow the standards).  LR produces the following ordering: unused bytes, ExifIFD, IFD1, IFD0.  A more typical ordering would be: (no unused bytes), IFD0, ExfIFD, IFD1.   Both orderings conform with the standards.
You could test out this hypothesis by obtaining a copy of the free Exiftool and then in a Terminal window (Mac) or command prompt (Windows) do the following command:
exiftool –exif:usercomment=”Hello world!” sample.jpg
This will cause Exiftool to rewrite the Exif metadata in the more-common ordering.  If the Android apps can now see the EXIF exposure metadata in the modified sample.jpg, then that confirms the apps are non-standards-conforming and should be fixed.

  • Copy paste text from pdf exported from Microsoft.Reporting.WinForms.ReportViewer control with Czech specific characters produced box charactex or ?.

Used Visual studio 2012. In our project there is used the Microsoft.Reporting.WinForms.ReportViewer control. In the report handled by the control are TextBoxs with a text with Czech specific characters e.g. (ř, ě, ...) . When exporting the report to pdf,
characters are displayed correctly. However when the text with czech characters in the pdf if copied and  placed into the seach box in the pdf document only box characters are displayed. The TextBox in the report use the default font Arial. When the report
is exported to Word, and then the Word document is saved as a pdf document, its ok. Coping a text with Czech charactes in the result pdf document and pasting into the search box displays again Czech characters not box characters.
Also when in the report handled by the ReportViewer control are several Tex Boxes and some of the boxes contains Czech characters and some not, after exporting to a pdf document there is problem with text selection. When in the pdf document I'm trying to
select several paragraphs, some with Czech characters and some without them, selection behaves strangely and jumps from one paragraph to another unexpectedly.

    Hi,
did you managed to avoid those squares?
BTW: if any such char. is encountered in a line, the entire line of text is grabbled.
I've tried even the ReportViewer from MSSQL 2014, but got the same problem. When I've tried IL Spy, I found a code, where it is checked if the PDFFont is composite - depending on that a glyph is created. But that still only a guess.
I've tried Telerik's reporting, they have similar problem (beside other), but not with the special characters. They produced scuares for some sequences like: ft, fi, tí.
Please give any info you got.
Until then my advices for you:
    a) try JasperReports (seems theyre most advanced, although it is java)
    b) Developer express has quiet quality reports - and it seems they got those special chars. right :D
    c) I created a ticket and waiting for Telerik's response (but if I had to choose reporting, I vould stick with a) or b)

  • How do I produce the highest quality DVD from MOV exported from iMovie

What is the best method in iDVD11 for burning to DVD, an imported HD 720p or HD 1080p MOV file exported from iMovie11?
I have successfully exported a 5.5GB (66min) HD 720p MOV file from iMovie. I then used iDVD to import this MOV file and burn it to DVD. When I played the DVD the quality was nowhere near that of the imported HD 720p MOV file as played on QuickTime. The DVD also shows captions at the edge of the 16:9 TV screen instead of further inside as per the QuickTime screening of the HD 720p MOV file.
How can I improve quality and maintain borders in iDVD for the DVD output?

    Hi
How can I improve quality and maintain borders in iDVD for the DVD output?
    Quality.
    • Use iMovie up to HD6 or FinalCut - as iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 - just delivers every second line to iDVD = less resolution
    • There are no HD-DVD in real life - DVD is as standard SD-Video
    • If You must use iMovie'11 then do not use "Share to iDVD" BUT "Share to Media Browser" and as Large (Not HD or other resolution - as result will suffers)
    Border
    • May be turning on TV-Safe area in iDVD can help a bit. ?
    • If this is IMPORTANT - Then You have to re-do Your movie in FinalCut and here turn on TV-Safe area and shrink the movie area to within this. Now it will show all on an old CRT-TV - but with a black frame due to that no two CRT-TVs show exactly the same area and then TV-Safe must be less than this.
My - Un-specific notes on DVD-Quality. If You are interested.
    DVD quality
    1. iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (vers 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1)
iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality (movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST
    • Best Performances (movies + menus  less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6) (movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
    About double on DL DVDs.
    2.Video from
    • FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not self-containing, no QT-conversion)
    • iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
    • iMovie’08 not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
    3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly eg x1 (in iDVD’08 or 09  this can also be set)
This can also be done with Apple’s Disk Utilities application.
    4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc).
    5. I use Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
    6. I use DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW)
    7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
    8. Don’t burn more than three DVD at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while before next batch.
    iDVD quality also depends on.
    • DVD is a standard in it self. It is Standard Definition Quality = Same as on old CRT-TV sets and can not
    deliver anything better that this.
HD-DVD was a short-lived standard and it was only a few Toshiba DVD-players that could playback.
These DVDs could be made in DVD-Studio Pro. But they don’t playback on any other standard DVD-layer.
Blu-Ray / BD can be coded onto DVDs but limited in time to - about 20-30 minutes and then need
    _ Roxio Toast™ 10 Pro incl BD-component
_ BD disks and burner if full length movies are to be stored
_ BD-Player or PlayStation3 - to be able to playback
The BD-encoded DVDs can be playbacked IF Mac also have Roxio DVD-player tool. Not on any standard Mac or DVD-player
Full BD-disks needs a BD-player (in Mac) as they need blue-laser to be read. No red-laser can do this.
    • HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
    • How it was recorded - Tripod vs Handheld Camera. A stable picture will give a much higher quality
    • Audio is most often more critical than picture. Bad audio and with dropouts usually results in a non-viewed movie.
    • Use of Video-editor. iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not the tools for DVD-production. They discard every second line resulting in a close to VHS-tape quality.
iMovie 1 to HD6 and FinalCut any version delivers same quality as Camera record in = 100% to iDVD
    • What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
    • What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JES_Deinterlacer_3.2.2 do the conversion)
(Dropping a PAL movie into a NTSC iDVD project
(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS. They are playbacked by a Mac - then You need not to care
    • What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
    • How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD’08 or 09
Pro Quality (only in iDVD 08 & 09)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choice before Pro Quality)
    1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD 08 & 09
(x4 by some and may be even better)
    2. Project info. Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD 08 & 09.
    Region codes.
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes.
    1 = US
    2 = EU

What it turned out to be was the "quality" settings in iDVD. The total clip time was NOT over 2 hours or 4.7GB, yet iDVD created massive visual artifacts on the "professional quality" setting.
I switched the settings to "high quality" which solved the problem. According iDVD help, "high quality" determines the best bit rate for the clips you have.
I have NEVER seen iDVD do this before, especially when I was under the 2 hour and 4.7GB limits.
For anyone else, there seem to be 2 places in iDVD to set quality settings, the first is under "preferences" and the second under "project info." They do NOT seem to be linked (i.e. if you change one, the other is NOT changed). take care, Mario
TO GET IT TO WORK SLIGHTLY FASTER
    • Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up hard disk
    • No other programs running in BackGround eg EnergySaver
    • Don’t let HD spinn down or be turned off (in EnergySave)
    • Move hard disks that are not to be used to Trash - To be disconnected/turned off
    • Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
    • Set screensaver to a folder without any photo - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set
pointer to this - turns on screen saver - to show that it has nothing to show

  • Jpeg export output is 'smudgy' vs Lr develop display

    Hello Gang -
I've been blaming smudged output on facebook & Flickr - but now I've seen the true culprit !
My Jpeg export output is quite 'smudgy' vs the Develop display - and even when I use export "Email" default it is still smudgy while the Develop module displays great detail...
what needs to be tweaked please?
    much thanks ~

    Hello -
    Ok - interesting:
I imported a jpeg into Lr and it looks very good - long story short - Windows Photo Viewer sucks
Viewed in Paint - looks good, viewed in FastPictureViewer - looks good.
Viewed in flickr - Bad.  I'm installing Chrome to see if its a firefox issue
I use firefox browser, I use sRGB as the export color space (although I see no difference among the 3 default kinds.
I canot find info as to whether WPV makes use of embedded icc profiles, and after googling and reading - I have not found info as to how I would know if I am "even including an embedded profile with the files"
Flickr and Facebook display my jpegs exactly as I see them in Windows Photo Viewer - which is different from how I see it in Lr's Develop Module - in that dark brown & blacks look smudgy with much reduced detail

  • How to hide EXIF (not IPTC) when export from LR3

I am exporting some hi-res images from LR3 (to send to one of my clients) and I need to hide my EXIF (camera settings etc) data completely BUT keep the IPTC (keywords, copyrights etc) data intact. Is there any way I could do that with in LR3 or with the help of a 3rd party plugin/software? When I click "Minimize embedded Metadata" it only removes IPTC not EXIF.

  • Why are my JPEG exports from Lightroom 4 are not displaying on other computers?

When I export JPEGs from Lightroom, they display fine on my computer but when I send them to the client, they are not displaying at all. There is a message saying that the software on the clients computer may not be up to date so I tried updating their software but to no avail.

I know, it's strange. I've never encountered it before. They are definitely JPEGs, although I don't know if the difference between JPGs and JPEGs is anything to consider.
On my computer, 2008 MacBook Pro, OS 10.8.3, they display through Preview. Also, when I upload them to Dropbox, the thumbnails display correctly. I have transferred them to a USB key as my client was not tech savvy enough to grasp Dropbox. When I brought the USB Key to the client and transferred to her MacBook Air, neither the thumbnails nor the photos themselves displayed. I also tried transferring to her PC and the same result.
I was trying to contact Adobe support to see if this was a problem other people had experienced.

  • Strange JPEG export from CS4 (6.0)

When I export jpeg from InDesign, the resulting jpegs only open in Photoshop. When trying to import to InDesign, place pane shows them grayed out.

It may be damaged or use a file format that Preview doesn’t recognize."

I was having the same problem! I downloaded a free file converter called Graphic Converter through CNET. It worked perfectly and you can convert one JPG file or a batch. I'm not sure what the issue is but this is definitely the easiest solution. I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion. I think it has something to do with the upgrade and reading JPG files that may be formatted differently. What I don't understand is why Mountain Lion cant read the files. Nonetheless, this worked perfectly for me.

  • WTF? Can't get jpg to save from CS2 (export from Lightroom)

Okay, have made an extensive search through help and FAQ files, and find some similar problems to mine, but nothing exact.
I am using Adobe Lightroom 2, but have the same problem with Lightroom 3 Beta (am using Windows 7)
I do my photo PP in Lightroom, usually export as a JPG, then upload to Flickr....No problem there......
Recently I have been doing some touch up work in CS2 (v9).  Problem: I bring the LR export JPG into CS2 so I can do my thing, and then try to save using the standard "Save as" function so I can upload to Flickr.   I get the following CS2 error: " Could Not Complete your Request because of a Program Error".  As a workaround I tried using the "Save for Web" function, but as everyone is aware that strips out all the EXIF data (something I want to maintain).  I also tried the "Edit in photoshop" LR function, Doing my CS2 stuff, and then saving the TIFF to a JPG from CS2, resulting in same error.
I am sure that I am performing some kind of stupid mistake, have an incompatable export setting, or not following the proper workflow process  for LR>CS2>JPG Editing.  I am a humble person, so please kick me in the butt, tell me what I am doing wrong so I can continue with my work!!!
Any help would be appreciated, oh masters of all things Adobe !!!

    Hi,
I dont know if this will help but this is how I do it. Set up Ps as your external editor. I think you said you had done this. From Lr use edit in Ps command. It opens the image in Ps. Do your work and then press "save", not save as. This returns the tiff or psd ( you decide in Lr preferences ) to Lr. You can then export as jpg to flickr. Hope this works for you.

  • Grabbing content from PDF exported from Pages

    Hi,
I have a number of reports that I have created using Pages that include pictures, text and bar charts. For the most part, I used the Graphs function in Pages to create these charts (as opposed to using Numbers and then copying in).
I exported these document in PDF's for my clients, but they would like to be able to select specific graphs to include in their PowerPoint presentations etc.
I have instructed them to use the Select Tool in Acrobat Reader (these are PC users), however the quality is AWFUL...very very fuzzy to the point of being unreadable.
So I have tried all these things:
    - Using Select Tool in Preview to select from a PDF converted in Good quality (fuzzy)
    - Using Select Tool in Preview to select from a PDF converted in Best quality (not much better)
    - Using Grab utility on document opened in Preview (maybe slightly better but not much)
    - pulling the bar chart into Photoshop first then pasting into Word (awful)
    - converting the Pages document into Word document (the worst ever)
The charts look crisp when viewed in Preview/Acrobat Reader, so I don't know why they won't copy better. If I select and copy the text boxes and the pictures (from Preview), they seem to be fine, so it is just the charts that are a problem.
    Any ideas?

The text and line drawings will be fine, they are generally not rendered, unless they overlap some bitmap material.
You can try simplifying the bar charts to basic line material, none of the fancy rendered versions.
You do not need to unshadow the graphs if they are upscaled, the shadowing is the same resolution as the graph.
I understand the scope of the work.
I just experimented with trying to print the graph to 400% to see if that would get around the issue and just hit an amazing bug. When you do that Pages shrinks the page size!
Apple catches you coming and going!

ps I have +Provided Pages Feedback,+ on this and suggest you do also.

I am having this same issue:  exported slideshow eventually photos disappear, screen is white but music continues.

It plays perfect in iPhoto, which all photos at the right moments with the songs.
Then one photo skips by quickly without a transition  and a number of photos are then not seen which causes the syncronization with music to alter.
Then the photos stop all together screen turns white and the music continues.

  • Corrupted EXIF data in photos exported from Lightroom CC

After upgrading to Lightroom CC EXIF can't be read by some apps. "Re-saving" a file in Photoshop fixes the problem. I'm using Mac OSX 10.9.5. Are there any plans to update and fix the EXIF data generated when exported from Lightroom CC?
Also, this command fixes the issue with Create Date part of EXIF.
    #!/bin/sh
    exiftool -AllDates="$(exiftool ${1} | grep 'Create Date' | awk '{print $(NF-1), $NF }')" -overwrite_original ${1}
The reason I'm asking is because we run a site where "Create Date" read from JPG's EXIF is crucial and it's a matter of letting users upload the pic or deny uploading.
So again, any plans on the fix?
    Regards,
    Pawel Kadysz

I confirmed that the Exiftool command line:
    exiftool -m -all= -tagsfromfile @ -all:all -unsafe file.jpg
removes the ICC Profile, which could account for significant color differences, considering that the profile is Adobe RGB.  I think this may be a bug in Exiftool, so I filed a bug report.  (But it might be that Exiftool just can't handle the non-standard layout of LR's JPEGs.)  The author is typically very responsive.
I tried some alternate Exiftool command lines that touch as little metadata as possible, and this one seems to address both of LR 6's JPEG problems:
    exiftool -m '-exif:datetimeoriginal<exif:datetimeoriginal' -xmp-crs:all= file.jpg
The -m option ignores minor errors and issues, in particular, when there are more than 1000 entries in the XMP metadata.
The '-exif:datetimeoriginal<exif:datetimeoriginal'  option sets the EXIF Date Time Original Field with its current value; this tricks Exiftool into rewriting just the EXIF metadata without touching the other metadata segments (e.g. the ICC profile), addressing the first JPEG problem.   (You could use any EXIF field that's present -- I picked DateTimeOriginal since every camera adds that.)
The -xmp-crs:all= option option deletes all of LR's develop settings from the XMP metadata, addressing the second JPEG problem. That metadata is not ready by any programs other than LR, as far as I know.
I've tested this new command line on a couple of pics, including the example you provided above, and it appears to work correctly.  But given that we're dealing with buggy output from LR that doesn't conform to the de facto and de jure standards, it's hard to have high confidence without testing on dozens if not hundreds of pics.

  • Color change after exporting from Lightroom

I noticed a drastic color change after exporting a file from Lightroom to a JPEG file today. I have been using Lightroom for a while, and it never happened before. I am assuming that I changed the setting somehow and I cannot find how to fix it.
    Here is the original.
After exporting to a JPEG. The color is so drastically different. I tried both sRGB and AdobeRGB and they turn out to have the same problem.
It is not as clear as JPEG files, but edited files with Photoshop CS5 also looks slightly different viewed on Lightroom.
I would appreciate it if anyone could help me.  Thank you so much for your help!

Thanks everyone for looking into my problem!
    >Can you upload a sample of each
    >* Raw File
    >* XMP Sidecar
    >* Exported JPEG
I somehow can't find XMP sidecar files in my folders.... So instead, I exported the JPEG file to the 2nd JPEG file, hoping you can compare those two JPEG files.
The colors get lighter and lighter every time I export the files. I uploaded those files (RAW, 1st JPEG, 2nd JPEG) on line. I also changed the file samples from the original post because I can't add watermarks.
I checked my flles, but there is no preset applied to the JPEGs.
I am thinking of unistallng Lightroom and reinstalling it and see what happens.
    Thanks!
