External drive appears twice in folders.

When I connect my external drive and open LR2, it shows the drive twice in folders.  However, LR is looking for the photos on the "phantom" drive.  In order to work on any photos I have to go through and locate them again.  Drive in Finder is there only once and appears to be functioning correctly.  Any ideas?

Kind of.  I have images on an external drive.  Just this week with my external drive attached I open lightroom, but LR doesn't see the photos.  Give me "?" on the folders of the images and when I open a folder I have the "?" in the upper right hand corner.  When I click to locate and browse out to the file on the external drive, LR seems to create another copy of my external drive w/in LR.  Once I confirm the location and choose to locate files next to it, it finds everything within THAT folder, but I still have two instances of the external drive. Did you understand what I was talking about w/the external drive taking on the storage data of my internal drive?  It's almost as if LR is acting like it is re-importing the files.

you can only repair and verify permissions on a drive with OS X installed. so that part is completely normal.

  • 3TB external drive appears to be 801,23GB

I just bought a Western Digital 3.0TB caviar green disk drive and plugged into a Freecom Hard Drive Dock Quattro with the provided FW800 cable and the disk appears to be 801,23GB on OS X Lion. I have tried to reformat with Disk Utility but nothing changes. Is this hard drive supported?

OSX can handle 3TB harddisks and format them correctly to full size.
However, there seem to be problems with the WD Green 3TB and external harddisk enclosures according to this thread https://discussions.apple.com/message/15362222#15362222

  • How do I get multiple folders to appear again on an external drive after I accidentally did a 'remove' from my folder list?

    Help please!
I accidentally did a right click remove of my folders on an external drive. The external drive shows in my folders list, but none of the folders that are still on it.
The photos are still in the folders on the drive and in their folders.  I tried an import to make the folders appear, and LR sees all the photos as existing in the catalog, so it knows about the photos.  And LR does not re-import them.
Just want to have the folders show up again in my folder list on the left.
Anyone know how to fix this error I made? Thank you.

For anyone interested, I had to add a folder to my external drive, then right click it and select SHOW PARENT FOLDER.  Thank you ADOBE SUPPORT, I am so relieved, feel stupid, but relieved.

  • Unable to view folders of a usb external drive connected to AEBS

My Macbook can see the External Drive connected to AEBS but unable to browse the folders. When I click the external drive to view the folders the beach ball remain spinning for a long time and then gives an error unable to connect.  My MacBook Pro can see all the external drive files with no problem.

How is that drive formatted?  It needs to be Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT32 for the AirPort Extreme to be able to read the disk correctly.
In most cases, you will also need to use a powered USB hub with the AirPort Extreme....even if the hard drive has its own power supply since the USB port on the AirPort Extreme is under powered.
My MacBook Pro can see all the external drive files with no problem.
Your Mac can read more types of drives than the AirPort Extreme.

  • When copying folder to external drive, "An older item named.." appears even when the dates are the same

When I am manually backing up folders from Macbook Pro Mountain Lion to an external drive, the dates for folders are being misread? It will say "An older item named.." every time. I checked the dates and times and they are the same on Mountain Lion and the External drive for the files and the folders. It should send me back a message saying "An item named “” already exists in this location. Do you want to replace it with the one you’re moving?"
When I try to move an individual file to the external drive and the dates are the same, I get the correct message - "an item named "" already exists..." so the issue is only with the folders.
I have only had this issue since the update to OS 10.8. Any Suggestions? thanks

The modification date of a file is stored internally in seconds. The Finder rounds off to the nearest minute. If the age of two files differs by less than 30 seconds, they'll seem to have the same modification date in the Finder.

  • Setting up Time Machine to use an external drive attached to another mac

I have an external drive connected to an iMac G5 (OS X 10.5.6) that is used by Time Machine on that mac. I would like to set up Time Machine on my MacBook Pro (also OS X 10.5.6) to back up to that same drive. File sharing is enabled on the iMac but I can't seen to mount just the iMac's the external drive. Rather, the MacBook Pro mounts the entire iMac file system --- it shows up as "brian.imac" under the 'shared' heading of the finder window; the iMac's individual volumes show up as folders. Time Machine doesn't seem to recognize these as allowable destinations. What am I doing wrong?

    Brian Curtiss wrote:
When I click on "brian.imac" on the MacBook Pro it opens the iMac's file system in the finder window. The iMac's external drive appears as a folder in this window. Clicking on that folder opens the external drive in the finder (the icon along the top of the finder window even looks like a drive, not a folder), but the 'drive' doesn't appear on the desktop or along the left side of the finder window.
    that's normal.
The iMac external drive is listed as an attached drive if I click on the "brian.macbook" under the "Devices" heading of the finder window (along with the built-in drive, mobile me drive and 'network,).
This should be enough. normally, at this point the drive should appear as a possible TM drive choice. I don't know why it doesn't work for you.
You can try the following terminal command. It should not be needed but maybe it will help
    defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1
With the iMac's external drive's finder window (on the MacBook Pro) still open, clicking "Choose Backup Disk..." in the "Time Machine" system preferences window brings up an empty list. How do I get Time Machine to recognize the iMac's external drive as a valid choice?

  • Aperture library on external drive that just died...

Not sure if this is the right place to post, but here goes.
I recently moved my Aperture library to an external firewire drive. I set my Time Machine to back it up from the external drive. Its the only thing I backup from that drive, all other backups come from my built-in interal drive on my iMac. Problem is, I don't remember the name of the drive and where I put the library file. So I am planning to get a new drive and I want to restore it from the backup. Any ideas?
If you know of a better area to post this, please advise.
    Thanks

    Alfredo,
Is your old drive no longer available?
You can browse your Time Machine backups like a disk in the Finder. Perhaps you can tell, what the name of your old drive and the name of the Aperture Library was. For example, my Backup drive "Lacie RaidBackup" looks like this in a Finder window:
It has a folder "Backups.backupdb" and with in folders for each Computer, then folders for each drives. Here you can see the backed up drives on your machine.
You can search the backup for Aperture libraries:
Select the the backup of your external drive and type ":aplibrary" into the search field, then set the search range to the name of your exterternal HD.
The Path bar at the bottom of the search window will show you the location of your Aperture library.
To restore your Aperture Library from Time Machine, open a Finder Window showing your "Computer" with all drives in "Column View" - set the Finder's Preferences to show all devices in the Sidebar, if you have not already done so:
With this window the frontmost Finder window dive into the Time Tunnel from the TM menulet:
Go back in time, until you are seeing your external drive appear in that window:
If you named your new drive exactly like your old drive, you should be able to restore your library using  the "Restore" button .

  • How to download all songs from my external drive into my itunes library

I have enough Gbytes to not use an external drive for my music.
How do I proceed to download all songs from the external drive on my internal drive?

    Hello there, Laetidela.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up some great steps on how to move your iTunes library from an external hard drive to your computer:
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4527
    External drive
This option requires more work than Home Sharing, but it creates a backup of your iTunes library on the external drive in addition to moving your content.
    Notes before you start:
You can use most iPods as an external drive.
Windows operating systems don't recognize Mac OS-formatted disks (HFS or HFS Plus formats). Because of this, you can't use a Mac-formatted iPod or external drive to move your music to a Windows PC. See iPod: How to determine iPod's hard disk format if you're not sure how your iPod is formatted.
Mac OS X can read Windows-formatted iPods and drives. This means there are many ways to migrate your information from your old Windows-based PC to your new Mac.
Mac OS X: To be sure external drives appear on your desktop, choose Preferences from the Finder menu. Be sure the options for "External disks" and "Hard disks" are enabled.
Part 1: Locating and consolidating the iTunes Media folder
Part 2: Copy iTunes folder from the old computer:
Part 3: Get iTunes ready on your new computer
Part 4: Back up any music that's already on your new computer
Part 5: Copy music to your new computer
Part 6: Add preexisting music that was on the new computer back into the library
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

    Pedro.

  • Events on External Drive not showing up in Event Library

    Hi,
I spent several hours last night importing nearly a Terabyte of iMovie events into FCP X.  It took forever, but seemed to work - all my iMovie events appeared in the FCP Event library.
Today, when I started up FCP X, my external drive appears in the list, but none of events on that external drive appear.  There is a directory called "Final Cut Events" directory in the root directory of that external drive and this directory seems to contain everything.  Any idea why aren't these events showing up in the Event Library?

I have the same issue. I have two external drives, both from WD, both formatted "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)", both connected via firewire 800. Sometimes the first one appears in the Event Library, sometimes the second one. After starting Final Cut both volumes displayed for the split of a second before one of these disappears.
    I have filmed that: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLzJH6vQAyo

  • Backed up iTunes on external drive and lost my playlists

    Hey Everyone,
So here is my issue. I use my macbook for DJing purposes and decided to backup my iTunes library to an external hard drive incase of a crash so I dont loose my precious music. So I went into my preferences, Advanced, and changed the iTunes folder location to my external, and consolidated the library which backed up my files to the drive but did not delete them from the internal drive, However whenever I would click a song to play it said it could not find the file. So I went back into preferences and changed the folder location back to iTunes music but that still didnt work. To make a long story short, I ended up Re importing the playlist (From internal Drive) back into itunes which worked fine. Here is my main issue.... All of my playlist folders are there but they are all empty. I have about 100 of them and are very very organized. I am wondering since I backed up the library to the external drive, Are the playlist folders on my external hard drive and how can I retrieve them if they are? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in Advance!

This is not a backup. This copies everything in iTunes to the new location and iTunes will use that location from now on.
The music located in /Music/iTunesiTunes music/ folder is no longer needed or used by iTunes.
However whenever I would click a song to play it said it could not find the file
iTunes was looking for it on the external (which you probably unplugged/umnounted).
I am wondering since I backed up the library to the external drive
You did not back up the library to the external.
You consolidated everything in iTunes to the external and iTunes will use that.
As Jim noted, if you want to to backup, copy the entire iTunes folder.

If you somehow lost it, look for it in the "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder in your music folder.
The itl file gets copied into the *Previous iTunes Libraries* folder only when you update iTunes.

  • Time machine not detecting external drive after installing OS X Server

    Hi,
Recently I installed OS X Server to set up a vpn but while I have been setting it up I have noticed other Mac's with in the network can not back up anymore the the external hard drive that they used to.
I have made sure that the external drive is on shared folders etc. and the other Mac's can detect the hard drive if I use connect to server to connect to my Mac Mini that the hard drive is attached to.
I have tried to connect it to the Airport we have here but it wont come up on any computers under the Airports name, we are using its hard drive at the moment to back everything up to but we need to back up to the external hard drive ASAP.
The hard drive in question is a SmartStor DS4600 6TB using USB 3 to connect to the Mac Mini and all the Mac's are running Mavericks.
This needs to be resolved ASAP so any help would be greatly apreciated.
    Thanks,
    Bruce

I *think* with OS X Server to use an attached external drive as a TM backup, it has to be setup this way. You're right, a shared folder is setup under a Backups folder. However, each Mac on the LAN will create its back up in the Backups/Shared and those back ups will be visible if they ever need to restore.
I don't understand why you need to have the back ups created at the root of the volume. And I don't know if or how this can be done using OS X Server. I have always used the TM Backup service and have not tried to share an externally attached drive to be used as a back up. You may be able to do this by going into the File Sharing service and define your back up drive there. You'll have to give read/write permissions to each user just like you would do for any other shared folder.

  • Can't boot from my firewire external drive

I have a 80 Gb LaCie firewire drive where I have installed (since Phanter) an operating system. All things were OK until I updated the system to OS X 10.4.10 in my G3 iMac (slot-loading). Since then I was unable to boot from the external drive. I had updated the drive's firmware, installed OS X 10.4.10 in it, but nothing has solved my issue. Can anyone help me with this?
    Helder Monteiro
    iMac G3 slot-loading   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   iBook G4 - 10.4.10

    Helder,
I apologize if I sounded like I was finding fault with your use of English, which I think you use very well. My own abilities with any foreign language are embarrassingly poor ... & I'm not that great with my native English one either!
My concern was that we were not communicating well enough for me to understand your situation well enough to suggest anything that would not make things worse. I'm still not entirely sure of that but let me review what I believe it to be before proceeding:
You have a LaCie external hard drive that both your iMac & PowerBook recognize when either is started up from its internal copy of 10.4.10. With either one, the drive mounts & you can read & write files on the external without problems. The only problem is neither Mac will start up from the external drive, which has a copy of 10.4.10 installed on it in the same way as with your Mac's internal drives, that being booting from the Tiger installer disk, installing the base version of the OS on it & then updating it to 10.4.10 with some succession of Apple updates downloaded from Apple. You have also tried the PPC version of the 10.4.10 combo update. None of this has resolved the problem.
If this is all true & accurate, then I suggest you start by attaching the drive to one or the other Mac while booted normally & seeing if the external drive appears as a choice in System Preferences > Startup Disk. You do not have to select it if appears; the test is just to see if the Mac recognizes it as having a valid OS version. If it does appear in the list, hover the mouse pointer over it until a popup box appears, which will tell you the version of the OS installed.
If it does not appear in the list, it means there is no valid version of the OS installed. If it does, you could try selecting it & restarting, but I suspect from what you have said, it won't work -- the Mac will display a question mark for a while on startup, eventually give up on the drive & start from the internal one. (If so, don't forget to reset the startup disk to the normal one to speed up future restarts.)
Either way, launch Disk Utility & run the "Repair Disk" function on the external drive. If it finds anything wrong, continue to repeat the repair until it passes. If it reports failure, stop & report that here before continuing.
If the drive was recognized in the system preference, also run the "Repair Permissions" step. (if not, it is unlikely this will be an option.) If the drive passes both tests now, try booting from it again by whatever method you prefer.
If it does not work now, I think you will have to reinstall the OS. If you have room on the drive, an Archive & Install will probably work. If not, you will need to consider "cleaner" install methods, which we can discuss if you wish.
    Good luck!

  • When I boot, holding down Option, my hard disk appears twice

When I boot, holding down Option, and the hard drive picker appears, my internal drive appears twice.  Is that normal, and does it matter which one I click?

It's normal if you have a Fusion Drive, and it doesn't matter which one you click.
