External HD has died

Some strange things were happening to my Mac Pro recently. Trying to open files would end up in a restart. Then when using a mouse or a tablet the buttons wouldn't respond. I could move the cursor around but the dock wouldn't pop up. It was driving me crazy.
Then I notice my Lacie ext fw HD hadn't appeared on the desktop. So I gave it a reboot as you do. As if by magic it appeared. I started thinking about creating a new account and deleting my current one thinking that it would solve the problems I was having.
Then it dawned on me, maybe the Lacie HD is having a fit and rubbing off on the OS. So I needed to get all the stuff off the HD quick.
It was too late the ext Lacie fw HD was dead.
Can anyone recommend a good data recovery firm here in the UK?
Thanks
Mark

Thanks for all the advice, gives me a little hope.
I have decided that before I throw my money away I'm going give the Mac OS DVD a try. But before I do that I'm going to try a couple of other things.
I'm going to try a different FireWire cable. Could a faulty FW cable cause these types of issues?
Try a different power supply.
Try OS DVD
I have found that when the HD isn't connected to a computer it will start up. However after 15 seconds it shuts down. So it's not completely dead.
Thanks again for all your feedback.

  • One month after purchase, external battery has died

Hello! One month after I purchased my Lenovo, the external battery on my laptop is dead. When I checked the Power Manager, it said that the second battery is not working and I should replace it. Plus when the external battery is connected to my laptop and I disconnect the power cord, the laptop shuts off.
I bought the four year think vantage depot protection or whatever it's called, and I have an X1 Thinkpad. Am I able to replace my external battery for free? What would I have to do? I tried finding this info online but I'm having trouble finding information about it

    @Afridicy,
There is a battery firmware to fix this issue.
    Please refer to this.

  • Can I use MacBook pro A1211 with external monitor, screen has died but

CCan I use MacBook pro A1211 with external monitor, screen has died but computer seems fine

Hmm seems like this model has DVI out. You could just plug a standard DVI monitor into that. Or use the DVI connector (VGA supported with included adapter; S-video and composite video supported with optional adapters) adapter that came w/ your machine.

  • External Hard drive Died - Best way to restore library

The External Hard drive where I stored all my iTunes files has died and I am unable to retrieve any files. Every thing is on my iPod whats the best way of geting the library & playlists back into iTunes?

Install software such as Paragon NTFS. Regardless of the method you use, back the data up; that drive may fail at any time.

  • My iMac G5 iSight has died.  New iMac on order.

My 5+ year old 20" iMac G5 iSight has died after a recent 3 hour power outage.  I have nothing.  It has acted a little stubborn with some restarts recently and I waited a little too long to replace.  I tore it down and replaced the PRAM battery but no luck, I am thinking it is a power supply issue.  I have a new iMac on order which should arrive next week.  I also should have a good Time Capsule backup.
I would like to remove the hard drive and put it an external firewire enclosure, reboot from that and restore my data and applications.  Will be going from a PPC iMac to an Intel.  Is this a valid option?  My main concern is my Quicken data and program.  I have been running Quicken 2006 and don't really want to upgrade from the reviews I have read.  Don't have the install disk for Quicken 2006 anymore.
    Thanks in advance!
    Jim

Removing the drive is an excellent idea, you should be able to mount your firewire external and use it on your new machine.
I'm not sure if you will be able to reboot from the FireWire external, it depends on the damage done by the hard shutdown (get yourself a USP, I use APC models, they're very good and have saved me many a time, I live in the country and the power is always going off), but it's likely that you can.
    Please post back with results,

as long as you do not have copies of your music (i.e. on an external HDD) or iTunes Match I fear the answer is: you won't.

  • Old PC has died taking all ITunes library with it - help

My old PC has died and gone to PC Heaven and I now have a lovely new one running with VIsta but I am really worried about connecting my Ipod up. As I have no acces to my old ITunes library I have downloaded new ITunes verison 7.2 but if I connect up and sync my IPod will I lose the tunes I already have stored? Please can anyone advise?
    IPOD Video   Windows Vista

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    TuneJack Windows Only
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iGadget Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    iRepo Windows Only
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • HT1329 I have a computer that has died but I have all my songs on my ipod and I want to transfer my existing songs to my new computer using my ipod

How can I add music from my ipod to my new computer. My old computer has died but the music is still on my ipod.

Depending on the definition of "died" you (or a helpful friend) may be able to extract the hard drive from the damaged computer, put it in an external drive bay and extract your iTunes library and other personal data from it.
Otherwise see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • My computer has died and I've had to by a new one. I can no longer access my Creative Cloud serial numbers?

    Hello
My computer has died and I've had to by a new one. I have a creative cloud account registered under my email <Removed by Moderator> for both Photoshop CC and Lightroom 5 which I pay for via Direct Debit.
I no longer have the Creative Cloud app but downloaded both programs to my new iMac. Photoshop works fine but Lightroom is still on trial purchase and asks for serial number. My account page on your site has no record of my CC account and shows no serial number for my purchased products. (It only lists a previous purchase of Lightroom-4)
How can get the serial numbers to my purchased products when they don't appear on my account settings on your website. Do I need to close my account a open a new one?

    Hello Ratandeep
I pay £8.57 for my Creative Cloud purchases of both Photoshop CC and
Lightroom-5 via my Barclays Bank Account to Adobe in Ireland. The last
payment was 13 Aprii 2015. Two weeks ago.
Now I have a new computer. I can sign into my Creative Cloud but it says I
have a 'Creative Cloud free account' as I'm using trial versions. I do not
have a redemption code as I must of lost it when my old computer died. I
can get online so that is not an issue.
When I sign in to my account the Creative Cloud products do not appear
under my purchases so I cannot view serial numbers or change the credit
card I pay with. It seems that your website and my account section do not
know I am making regular monthly payments for CC.
If you check I am actually making the payments as I describe can you please
let me have my serial numbers.
    MANY THANKS
    Mike

Its wrong to assume that everyone has a backup copy.

  • HT1420 The laptop that was authorized for my iTunes has died.  How can I move my iTunes library to another computer?

I have LESS than 5 computers in my home and one of which has  died(hard drive unrecoverable) how can I deauthorize the laptop that has died?
This URL http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1420 only describes how to deauthorize working computers.

I don't think you can. Well not at least until you have 5 computers authorized. When you have 5 computers authorized there should be an option to "unauthorize all" in your account settings.
If you get to 5 computers authorized and you need a 6th, do this and then re-authorize the others you need.
It would be handy if you could just pick a machine to unauthorize in iTunes.
