External HD is no longer loading to the desktop

I have two external drives connected by firewire that are no longer appearing on the desktop.
It worked fine until I ejected both of them from the desktop. I turned off the power of the iMac then restarted the iMac and turned the external drives. Now they won't appear on the desktop. What is the solution to get them to be recognized again.
I tried Disk Utility but it doesn't see the drives.
JKai

If Disk Utility does not have them in the sidebar, they are not being recognized by the system, for some reason.
Try shutting down (powering off) the iMac. Disconnect one drive so that there is only one connected to the iMac. Power on the iMac and then the drive. Is there any difference if only one drive is connected?
Try doing the same thing with only the other drive connected.
It is possible that one of the drives has become faulty and it is preventing the other one from being recognized as well.
Be sure to try using a difference FireWire cable and if your iMac has more than one FireWire port, try the other port.

Are they daisy chained? Have you tried them one at a time? Have you tried a different FireWire cable? Do they show up in either system profiler or Disk Utility? Have you reset the SMC? http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

  • External hard drive no longer shows up on Desktop

    Hi everyone,
I did what a good person should do with a tech issue and did a long search through forums before I resigned to bothering you all with it.
I've had a 500GB Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Media external hard drive for 6 months which up until this week, was showing up as an icon on my Desktop. I had named it Eid HD.
I suddenly am unable to access this drive on my MacBook Pro. The Desktop icon has disappeared but the drive still lights up as per normal. I'm using OS X v10.6.8
    I tried changing USB cables.
The drive appears in Disk Utility as follows (the yellow icons):
I read somewhere that I needed to mount it. The first yellow icon doesn't have the mount option. The second one (Eid HD) has the option but when I mount it, I get the following message:
    Mount Failed.
The disk “Eid HD” could not be mounted.
Try running First Aid on the disk and then retry mounting.
I verified and repaired (First Aid) the disk. Results:
Tried to mount - same error message as above. Mount failed.
I downloaded Disk Warrior and although the drive appears in there, I can't do anything with it. The Graph and Rebuild buttons are both greyed out.
Does anyone have any ideas about how to fix this?
The files are still on the drive as I used it on a Windows machine to test it.
I don't want to format it.
Please help if you can, thank you in advance.
    Sam

I verified and repaired (First Aid) the disk. Results:
That quote is from your first post.  But I have some questions about that (maybe just to satisfy my own curiosity).
    1.  When you ran Disk Utility First Aid did you do it on the disk itself (the one that is enabled with the Seagate title)?
    2. That First Aid window title line says "First Aid: EID HD" yet my DU window title only shows the name exactly as it appears in the left panel, no "First Aid:" prefix.  So is that a change in 10.6.8 (I use 10.6.5)?
    3. You display shows lines like "Verifying folders", "Folders verification completed", and "Verifying $...".  Again I have never seen DU display that kind of info.  Another 10.6.8 change?
As I said, I am only curious.  It may not mean anything.  But I thought I would point out these details just in case.
If these aren't 10.6.8 changes (I find it hard to believe apple would change DU after all these years just from 10.6.5 to 10.6.8) then just what DU First Aid were you running?

  • Blank discs no longer mount on the desktop

Blank discs no longer mount on my MacBook pro (2007). I do not see them on the desktop, nor in /Volumes. However, the System Profiler and the Disk Utility see them. Already burned discs (data, video) work fine.
I did two things since last time I was able to burn a disc
    1. Installed Snow Leopard (from macbox set) - clean. Had Tiger before.
    2. Bought WD external HD that installed some drivers. However, WD did not put anything in my System folder because it did not ask for a password.
Also, this is a general rather than a MacBook Pro problem. Is there any way to post it under "all computers"?

Thanks, I will try that. However, the fix described there (reset PMU/SMC) applies to all discs. In my case only blank discs will not mount. Audio, video, and data discs mount fine.
    Thanks

  • Firefox will not open at all. After click the hourglass comes up and then goes away and nothing happens at all. Nothing will load past the desktop. I cannot get into firefox at all to enable anything or disable anything.

When i click on the mozilla icon on the desktop the arrow will spin (VISTA) and will then disappear. Mozilla will not enable or even pop up or anything. I am still looking at the desktop and not mozilla. I lick on the icon many times and nothing ever enables, still stuck looking at the desktop and no Internet. Not to bring up your rival, but IE will open half way and then say not responding and will freeze and i must restart the computer every time. I have to use opera now because IE and Mozilla will not enable and Mozilla wont even pop up or enable or anything...just the desktop and no net. ONCE AGAIN MOZILLA WILL NOT ENABLE, SO I CANNOT GO TO TOOLS OR ANYTHING.

I have exactly the same issue. After FF upgraded on its own to version 5, it won't open from start menu, taskbar, desktop icon, or even by pressing firefox.exe in program files directory. It does so by pressing a link at msn messenger, inside Outlook etc.
Disabling all addons, didn't help. Moreover, I can't start FF in safe mode or start profile manager (Start > Run> firefox.exe -ProfileManager).

I don't know why you want to avoid installing the Canon software that comes with the camera. I bought a Powershot S80 several months ago and installed the Canon software package. I like it a lot. Their ImageBrowser program works quite well -- it's simpler to use and understand than iPhoto, and less restrictive. I have never had any difficulty having the camera (or a USB memory-card reader) show up on the desktop automatically.

  • External hard drive not showing up on the desktop

I have a external hard drive and
when i turn it on the icon for the drive does not show up.
I used disk warrior and it found sever damaged sections of the drive.
i fixed that and it is still not mounting. Should it get a new hard drive?

    Hi Josh,
I used disk warrior and it found sever damaged sections of the drive.
Did it repair them? If you run DW again does it report it as OK?
Open Disk Utility & see if it shows up there, if so highlight it & see if the Mount button/icon mounts it.

Alright, well let's try this then.
Restart your computer. After you restart your PC, let's try starting Firefox up in Safe Mode. Read [[Safe Mode|this article]] to see how to start in Safe Mode. If Firefox starts up normally, then this is likely a problem with your extensions, so we will need to disable them one by one (or disable them all and re-enable them one by one) to figure out the offender.
Another thing is please update to Firefox 11 (go to [[www.getfirefox.com|www.getfirefox.com]] to download it since you can't get Firefox open to update). It does have some bug fixes that might help your problem.

If you own a single user license of CS5.5, then you should be able/allowed to install it on 2 computers, as long as both the desktop and laptop are the same operating system.

  • About cameras not mounting on the desktop in Tiger (10.4.3)

Information for those here who have problems with their cameras or chip readers no longer mounting on the desktop.
This has happened here too, with a Nikon D50 connected to an iMac G5 iSight 20". At first, I thought it was a lock file problem, caused by me forgetting and disconnecting the camera without first ejecting the desktop icon. But, I now think the problem is more likely caused by upgrading to 10.4.3, since I spoke with AppleCare today.
I was told that the 10.4.3 upgrade says (somewhere) that due to changes in iSync, cameras will no longer be mounted on the desktop. I made the observation that many users of digital still cameras prefer to transfer images from the camera (or chip) using the Finder. The operator said he would escalate this issue - he didn't know why this might have been changed, but seemed to understand that it would be an issue for a number of people.
Personally, I'm confused by the whole arrangement, which seems most un-Mac like: image handling prefs are actually set in Image Capture, despite the fact that the default app that launches when connecting a camera is iPhoto. Now, it seems, iSync is being brought into the frame (please excuse the pun!).
Why can't the action be defined in a General Preference pane, where it would be more easily found? Well, the answer is that it surely could be - and I would suggest that it should be. And I think the prefs should also include an option to have the camera/flash chip mounted on the desktop, for access in Finder too.
On a final note, the Nikon D50 is, I was told, not in the list of cameras supported by Tiger. Yet, when I checked with Nikon, they do not issue any drivers for the D50 and said that the drivers in Tiger are "D-series camera drivers" and, as such, are compatible with the new D50. Unfortunately, a lot of my time was wasted, because the AppleCare rep repeatedly wanted me to accept that the problem was due to the fact that this model of camera is not supported. This was despite the fact that I advised him of the fact that there are a number of threads here in the discussion forums, with users mentioning that they've had exactly the same issue with a variety of different cameras, of many brands.
I'll report back, as and when I hear anything further from the escalation of this issue.
    Nigel

You have tried a lot of things, all correct, but have you repaired permissions since reinstalling Flash?
Repairing permissions is important, and should always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.
Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).
In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.
This only takes a minute or two in Tiger, but much longer in Leopard.
    Background information here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751
    and here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302672
An article on troubleshooting Permissions can be found here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2963
By the way, you can ignore any messages about SUID or ACL file permissions, as explained here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448?viewlocale=en_US
If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.
Also, how much RAM do you have? Some older G4's can struggle with today's streamed flash content.

  • How to define the desktop folder?

    Hi,
I entered the following lines into the Terminal application:
    sudo mv desktop desktop.bak
    ln -s /Users/username/Dropbox/./Desktop
this command defined my Dropbox folder as the OS X desktop. plus, my Home folder now contains a folder called desktop.bak.
    how can I undo this?
is it possible to define a folder inside the Home folder or inside the Dropbox folder as the OS X desktop?
thanks in advance for your suggestions.
    best, Ian

    @Niel
thanks a lot, the commands you suggested created a folder called Desktop.old inside my Home folder that now seems serve as the OS X Desktop. the dropbox folder no longer serves as the Desktop.
    I'd have some further questions:
is it safe to delete the desktop.bak folder from the Home folder?
is it safe to rename the Desktop.old folder to simply Desktop?
is it possible to define a folder inside the dropbox folder as the OS X Desktop?
again, thank you Niel for your very helpful answer.
