External Thunderbolt Drives Eject Randomly and Name Changes to Blank

I Have two external thunderbolt drives connected to the trash can mac pro ... sometimes they eject randomly with one drive renaming itself to blank ...
Anyone ?

It was a long week. Here is an update.
Had the opportunity to go to the Apple Store yesterday and purchase new thunderbolt cables, and hooked everything up this morning.
I disconnected the Seagate drive from the sled, and brushed the contacts.
The Seagate hard drive did not boot on my iMac and Disk Utility could not see it. That said, when booted to my wife's iMac, Disk Utility could see the drive, but I could not verify or repair it. The data from my wife's iMac is attached.
Also, I tried to run Data Rescue 4. It would not see the drive. I do have Disk Warrior, if that is a reasonable option to try.
Additionally, the LaCie (now connected to my iMac with a new thunderbolt cable) has not yet been ejected. The computer has gone to sleep several times and I have awakened it.
I very much appreciate your thoughts and time, And I look forward to your thoughts, To include any experience in getting the data off of the Seagate. It contains seven years worth of photographs, which I would hate to lose. I also got the message about redundant backups. There may be some of the backup in Crash Plan.

I've been using a Western Digital hard drive for the past 4 months and it's been great. However recently it has decided to randomly eject itself. This was getting irritating but could live with it.
However now it isn't even being recognised by Finder even though it shows up in Disk Utility. I'm puzzled and worried - that hard drive has all my music and photos on but i can't access it
I'd be very grateful for any ideas on how to go about getting it back!?

I have the same problem. The Western Digital hard drive doesn't show up on my desktop when I plug it in, although it shows up on disk utility. I would also appreciate any advice on getting my computer to recognize it.

IMac crashes when powering off external Thunderbolt drive

Hi,
I have an external LaCie d2 USB 3.0 drive that is connect to my iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011, 3,1 GHz Intel Core i5, 12 GB RAM) through Thunderbolt. Whenever I power off the drive by pushing the power button (yes I did verify: all partitions have been ejected correctly before in the Finder and verified in Disk Utility), the iMac crashes. It starts up again, displays a screen stating the computer was not shut down properly and then immediately restarts. After that it boots up fine.
This started occurring after having installed 10.10.2 Beta. I did file a report with Apple. As this was beta software I decided to completely reinstall the iMac from scratch (a complete fresh install, just imported my documents manually after) and everything was working fine again (10.10.1). Boom, after having updated 10.10.2 yesterday the problem is back.
I did manage to find a workaround: when I connect the drive through a UBS cable it works fine. Conclusion: this seems to be caused by a Thunderbolt related update in 10.10.2.
Question: is any one else with an external Thunderbolt drive experiencing this and has perhaps found a fix?

Unmounting LaCie d2 disk partitions is OK: the drive spins down and goes to sleep without problem. However when I take the power off (with the small switch at the rear of the unit), the iMac experiences a kernel panic.
This issue did not occur with Yosemite 10.10.1, and does not occur either with another LaCie drive (8TB LaCie 2big Thunderbolt drive, model # 9000246). So the issue is specific to OS X 10.10.2, and only certain models of drive(s).
We need a fix from Apple - the Operating System should be rock-solid in any circumstances.
Curiously, OS X does not write a kernel panic log with every occurrence. It’s only after the 3rd or 4th kernel panic that it would actually produce this log:

Can I create a OSX boot clone on an external thunderbolt drive and retain the original internal install as a bootable option for the rare times the MBP is mobile?

Continuing my reaserch into the best upgrade options.
I'm looking at thunderbolt storage. But just just discovered that thunderbolt is apparently bootable...
As the 2.5" sata HD in the MBP isnt the speediest thing in the world, I was wondering if people thought it was a good idea to clone my OSX install to a thunderbolt drive (currently contemplating a 4tb mirrored (2tb resultant vol) with a 250gb osx partition 250gb bootcamp partition and dividing the remaing space for time machine and win backup)
the MBP mainly lives on the desk in the office and rarely is dis connected from its cluster of attachments. But for when i do take it walk-about can i leave the origional OSX install on the internal HD for mobile use?
sorry for all the questions ( I feel like a noob again)
also is there anyway to have two or more bootcamp drives? i'm not talking partitions within bootcamp but another complete bootcamp in its entirity....

so once I've migrated bootcamp to the external thunderbolt drive I can use the space it occupyed on the internal HD for a partition for my home directory and all those other sharable assets... point the internal and external copies of OSX at this and i't will remain current regardless of weather i'm connected to the external drives?
That's the general idea but something's you need to be concerned about.
1. I am not familiar with bootcamp so I do not know whether it can be run from an external drive.
2. Before doing anything about moving your home directory make sure you backed up your original stuff on yet another disk. Since you never attempted this before you could easily make a mistake and be hung out to dry if you cannot start over by reverting to the backup. This is an important step not to be ignored.
3. Contrary to what you read in the various web sites about moving your home directory, and there is plenty of them (google "move os x home directory"), I don't agree with the way they say to do the move, i.e, drag the home directory in the finder to the new location.
When I move the home directory I am always concerned about ownership and permissions info on the files which can be changed by simply moving the home dir in the finder. So the safest way to protect against the is to use the terminal (in utilities) to create what's called a tar.gz (gz stand for gzip just another form of compression like zip is a form of compression) of your home dir and move tht tar.gz file to the new home dir location and then expand it.
In terminal I would do the following (assume YOURACCOUNT is your current home directory):
cd /Users
tar czf YOURACCOUNT.tar.gz YOURACCOUNT
This will create the file YOURACCOUNT.tar.gz which you can now safely move to your new location. Not only that you now have a backup copy of your current home dir in that compressed YOURACCOUNT.tar.gz file.
Say you move YOURACCOUNT.tar.gz to a new drive called, NEWDRIVE. Then in terminal,
cd /Volumes/NEWDRIVE
tar xzf YOURACCOUNT.tar.gz
Now your YOURACCOUNT home directory is safely moved and all it's permissions and ownerships are persevered. You still of course need to fix up the Accounts information to point to this new place as mentioned in those many articles on the topic.

External Hard drive is randomly popping on and off

Hi. You guys are awesome by the way. We need to set up a tip system, where I can paypal something into an account for you... coffee cards or something, maybe itunes songs!
One of my external hard drives is randomly disconnecting and then reconnecting to the computer. It is a 1TB Lacie connected over FW800 thru a daisy chain. It is a video edit suite with LOTS of attachments - three FW drives, a FW deck, two monitors, my ipod, and so on...
Any thoughts? Need more info?

Does it happen when off the daisy chain and hooked directly to the FW 800 port? If you don't know, then try that.

ThinkPad L530 DVD-RW Drive Ejecting Randomly & Crashing

The dvd drive will eject randomly and when that happens it crashes my laptop. The screen will go black and you have to hold down the power button to restart the comp.
This happens whether or not the dvd drive is is enabled or not. I ran a virus scan and found nothing.
Am running Windows 8 in desktop mode.

I did some brief research on the Event ID 41 error and found a few things. One Microsoft article (found here) advises to make sure that the memory is not having issues. This can be checked by pressing Enter at the LENOVO screen when starting the computer, and then running the diagnostic called the Quick memory test. A user on a Microsoft forum (found here) found that once all drivers for his system were updated, the error stopped for him. I would give these steps a shot and see if anything changes. File Settings:
Image Format: JPEG
Color Space: sRGB
Quality : 80-100
I have not checked the box for "output sharpening", although I did minor sharpening as part of my edit process in LR.
For Image Sizing, I have not changed anything. This is what is currently selected: "resize to fit" box is checked and "long edge" is selected, 500 pixels. Resolution 72 pixels per inch. The "don't enlarge" button is NOT checked.
I'm hoping this is where my issue resides!!

LaCie 3TB external hard drive ejecting improperly

Anybody have experiences with a LaCie external hard drive ejecting improperly? Not able to run long enough to do proper back ups and file maintenace. Closes or ejects on its own.

I just replaced a 2TB LaCie with an 8TB model and encountered the same problem I would get a "disc improperly ejected" message and since my iTunes library is stored there the app would go into kernel panic and require a force quit. Very annoying.
I switched from the thunderbolt ports to the USB and have not had any issues since.
I never had any issue with my My older HD so I think maybe the Thunderbolt connector that came with the new drive was bad.

External hard drive gone wrong and copied everything to Imac HDD filling it completely

I have had my iMac backed up to an external hard drive for years and randomly the External hard drive is now not readable and it has seemed to copy everything to my imac hard drive filling it completely.
any ideas how to firstly fix the external drive without losing everything on there and second why it would have copied everything to the Imac?
I cant even do a restore from a back up as its all backed up to external drive and its saying its not readable.

If they're still in two folders (iTunes app and Music) on your external, can you not just copy those two back to the internal drive and expect it to work properly again? It's my understanding that music you wish to be active in iTunes must be on your internal drive.

Drive ejects randomly

My CD/DVD drive ejects often and without warning. It remains open until I close it again, but it will soon eject again. It ejects with no disc in it, while playing a CD/DVD, while in the middle of burning, you name it. I bought a new drive (Lightscribe) and it does the same thing. I put the original Superdrive in and it still ejects also. Let me know if anyone's heard of this one. Thanks in advance.

My MacBook has "ejected" by itself, uncommanded, several times since I bought it. No disc in the drive at the time. There doesn't seem to be a pattern as to when it happens. It has happened when I was typing (hand nowhere near the Eject button) -- besides, there's no disc in the drive, so Eject button doesn't do that anyway.
Other times, it happens when I'm not even touching the MacBook.
Erase / install and it's still doing it. Reset SMC and it's still doing it.

Hi Adam, if you think yoiur HD may be failing you could do a TM restore onto the new disk. I would rather see you do a clone either SuperDuper or CarbonCopy Cloner.Of your internal drive. That way you have a bootable backup in case it does fail.
btw - what are the symptoms of your failing drive?

Yes - in most cases you can just copy your entire library (by default C:\Users\username\Music\iTunes) to your external drive, with the result being a iTunes folder in the root of that drive with a structure like this:
Then hold down SHIFT when you start iTunes, and when you see this prompt:
click on Choose Library..., navigate to the iTunes folder on your external drive, and click Open. See turingtest2's user tip on Make a split library portable for more information, including steps you may need to take to align your library structure before moving it to an external drive - this applies if you currently have some/all of the media in your library stored outside the standard iTunes Media folders.
