Extremely noisy and continuous fan - MacBook Pro 15"

Hi there,
After spending an entire afternoon trying to figure out why my MacBook Pro 15" got so loud over the last few days, I decided to post this message being completely desperate...
I have seen and tried everything from Apple Support to Apple Users... Restart, shut it down, reboot the SMC, reboot the PRAM ! Nothing worked !
My laptop is only two years old, and I've done all updates including installing the new Lion iOS X... This noise has started about three days ago and I don't get what is happening?
No printers, no software using a lot of CPU in the Activity Monitor... Also, iStat says 96% Idle CPU, fan 6939 rpm...
Help !!!! It's unbearable !!!!

So AHT never did run, and you'll need the original DVD that was shipped with your computer when it was new to run AHT. If the hard drive has been reformatted at any time, that explains why AHT isn't there at startup without the DVD.
Just to be clear, AHT is not going to fix anything. It's purely a diagnostic tool, not a therapeutic one. Once you're finally able to run it, choose the extended version, make an exact note of any error that it reports, and post the error here. If there is any error, the machine will indeed need to be repaired.
A Genius Bar appointment is free, and the Genius will have testing software not available to civilians like you and me to run if you can't find your original disc containing AHT. So don't lose any sleep if you can't put your hands on it — just make an appointment and take your machine in.

  • Grey screen and continuous beeping (macbook pro 2010)

Hi, I unplugged my computer from its display/keyboard/HDD setup to use it portably and then upon waking it from sleep - it froze and a continuous beeping began from within the computer.
When I started the computer I get the bong and white/grey screen (completely blank) and the beeping begins immediately. But thats as far as it goes.
I've looked online and there's a lot said about RAM related beeping but having removed the RAM i know this not to be the case as the beeping I hear is much quieter and far more regular than any of the loud RAM beeps.
Safe boot, pram reset and cmd s did nothing.
Any ideas whats wrong and how to solve?
    Thanks

    Hello there, whistler2014.
Sounds like you did some great troubleshooting already. You may just want to review the recommendations in the following Knowledge Base article to make sure you've covered all bases:

  • Mail hoging CPU and heating up MacBook Pro

    Hi,
Since more than week my MacBook Pro, running Mac OS X 10.5.8 shows strange temperature behavior.
As soon as I open Mail (3.6), the temperature of my MacBook Pro rises (with as much as 25 to 30 degrees celsius) up to 85° and more, and the fan activates. When I close down Mail the temperature falls back to normal (+/- 55° C) and the fan shuts down. This happens within seconds.
I have SMS Fan Control running on the MacBook Pro, so I can see the actual temperature.
When I open the Activity Monitor I see that Mail uses around 99% of the CPU when it's sitting idle and when it's checking for new messages it uses up to 110% of the CPU. In Console I don't see anything concerning Mail.
I tried rebuilding every single folder in Mail but to no effect.
This is a new behavior. I have owned and used the MacBook Pro for almost 3 years now and I used to run Mail in the background permanently without any problem until last week. As long as Mail is open, the fans are working which is very annoying.
When I create a new user account on the MacBook Pro and open Mail, the problem does not occur. In the Activity Monitor I see that mail takes 0,0% of the CPU when sitting idle and around 25% hen it's downloading new mails.
Does anyone have an idea what causes this behavior and how to fix it?
    Thanks a lot,
    Ivan

Well, this is a complete puzzle. At this point I have no simple solution. I can offer only the option of cloning your system to an external drive, if you can. Do not worry about any possible problems at this point. Use a good backup utility such as Carbon Copy Cloner or SilverKeeper - VersionTracker or MacUpdate - or you can use the Restore option of Disk Utility.
    Now comes the "hard" part.
Boot from your Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the Erase tab, then click on the Erase button.
Now quit DU to return to the installer where you will reinstall Leopard. Upon completing the installation you will reboot to the Setup Assistant. At the end of the setup you will configure your initial admin account. Be sure to use the same username or short name that you were using. This will assure you not have any permissions problems trying to transfer from your cloned backup to the reinstalled system.
Upgrade the new system using Software Update to download and install any required updates to return you to 10.5.8.
Now when you open Mail you can recreate you email account after which you want to select Import from the File menu. You will have an option to import from Apple Mail. Choose that option, then navigate to the old /Home/Library/Mail/ folder on your cloned backup drive. Look for the Mailbox folder and select it, then click on the Import button. This will import your mailboxes. This only works for POP accounts. If you use IMAP for your mail then after you set up the account all your server-based mail will be there.
You can similarly restore your Address Book, calendars, etc. However, third-party applications may need to be reinstalled. And, applications support data for third-party applications will need to be copied from the backup to the new system. They are usually found in /Home/Library/Applications Support/. And, you will want to restore preferences from the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder on the backup.

  • I upgrated for the latest version of itunes and now my Macbook Pro its 1000000 time slower

I downloded some update for the Itunes, and now my Macbook Pro its toooooo slow, I dont know what do to anymore. I even reinstalled the whole system. Can anybody help me???

Do the following. There's nothing of interest in the Activity Monitor data.
Things You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
Start with a visit to: OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney.
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Repair the Hard Drive - Lion
Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such asMacaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Data Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. SyncTwoFolders
      6. Synk Pro
      7. Synk Standard
      8. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.
If none of the above help, and they may not, then this should:
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Airport Extreme can't connect to MacBook Pro running Windows XP

I have a new Airport Extreme Base Station and an intel MacBook pro that is 6 months old and dual boot. The AEBS is set up with WPA2 and AEs. All works well for both MacOS (Leopard) and WindowsXP in wired mode and wireless works fine for the Mac side. When i run Windows, i can see the wireless network but i can't seem to configure it to actually connect to the network. I set it to WPA-PSK/AES, but it never can connect, and when i go back to check the settings in zeroconfig (the Windows connection manager) the connection is always reset to "WEP". Any suggestions? BTWQ, we can't connect my son's laptop (Windows XP ) either.

Try changing the encryption, also make sure the computer is fully updated. Windows Xp computers do not all have native WPA2 capability. Try disabling security and see if that works. If it does not, it may be an interfernce problem on one computer. Try changing the wireless channel to 3 or 9

Quite right, but as the OP does not have component or composite connections not important.
To the OP, this does work, but is not the cheapest, and as it appears that Apple no longer sell an SVideo adaptor cable 3rd party it will have to be.

How can I set up Cinema Display as a main screen and leave my macbook pro as a second screen instead?

I learned that the Dock is positioned at the chosen edge of whatever Display is positioned farthest to that side.  E.g. for the Dock to be positioned on the right side of the Cinema Display (instead of the right side of the MacBook), the Cinema Display must be oriented (by dragging) to the right of the MacBook monitor on the "Arrangement" tab of the Displays Preference Panel.

  • I was messing around with .kext files in the MacintoshHD and now my MacBook Pro won't start up.

I was messing around with .kext files in the MacintoshHD and moved the system.kext and two others to my desktop and deleted the originals and now the MacBook Pro won't start up. All I get at start up is the apple icon then a bunch of text shows up part of which says Mac OS version: not yet set. then the apple icon turns into the power icon and tells me to turn off the computer. I've tried reinstalling from the install DVD by holding down option when powering on and selecting the install DVD and it just goes to a white screen with the apple icon and stays like that. I didn't have the disk utility on my Mac before this happened because I deleted it to make room on my computer a while ago so I'm not sure if that's why it won't load the install DVD but anyone who knows the solution to this with out going to get it repaired would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Never mind my dad just found the original install DVD and that worked. Before I was using an install disc that Apple sent me for another issue I was having, but thanks for replying so quickly and trying to help on this Thanksgiving day!!!

  • I have a music library on an iMac and I got a new iPhone and a new MacBook Pro and I want some of the songs from the iMac library to be on my phone and my MacBook Pro and I have a new Apple ID on my phone and my Mac book pro

I have a music library on an iMac and I got a new iPhone and a new MacBook Pro and I want some of the songs from the iMac library to be on my phone and my MacBook Pro and I have a new Apple ID on my phone and my Mac book pro, is this possible if so how do I do it?

Providing specifics on all the ways to do this will take more time than I am willing to spend here these days.  You can do some of this with Home Sharing.  You can transfer the entire library from one computer to another, If you do that you can delete what you don't want from the transferred library.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings: Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive. Open iTunes and immediately hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) so you get a prompt to select a library, then guide it to the 'iTunes Library.itl' file in the moved iTunes folder. If you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there. (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)
You do not want to use a new AppleID.  Change the  AppleID on the new phone to the old ID.  Purchases made with one AppleID cannot be transferred to a different one and it will be a royal pain to manage two Apple IDs.
Change iTunes Store account on an iOS device - Log out of your current account with Settings.app > Store (Settings > iTunes & App Stores on iOS 6) > tap on your AppleID. Log in with a different account. Note, turning on automatic downloads or re-download past purchases may tie the device to that account for 90 days - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4627 https://discussions.apple.com/message/18484935 - "In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iCloud account on your iOS device, you need to delete the account from your iOS device first, then add it back using your updated details. (Settings > iCloud, scroll down and hit "Delete Account") When you delete your account, all the data that is synced with iCloud will also be deleted from the device (but not from iCloud), but will be synced back to your device when you login again."
