Fam starts on boot but fails to stop on shutdown

I have kdebase, kdelibs, kdeutils, kdenetwork, kdeartwork, kdepim and kdegames installed.
I'm new to arch.
I modified /etc/rc.conf to:
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng !hotplug !pcmcia netfs crond dbus hal portmap fam network alsa cups adsl clamav postfix kdm)
fam starts properly but fails to stop at shutdown or reboot. Why is that and how do I solve it?

I'm afraid to say the problem is back even if the timeout value is set to 0, after I rebooted twice today the problem happens again. Any idea why?

  • [SOLVED - partly] Minidlna won't start on boot, but OK otherwise

    I am using an up-to-date system as of 2012-11-13. The problem is that minidlna fails to start on boot:
    minidlna.service - minidlna server
    Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/minidlna.service; enabled)
    Active: failed (Result: exit-code) since Tue, 2012-11-13 07:53:55 CET; 1h 33min ago
    Process: 401 ExecStart=/usr/sbin/minidlna -P /var/run/minidlna/minidlna.pid (code=exited, status=255)
    CGroup: name=systemd:/system/minidlna.service
    Nov 13 07:53:59 earth minidlna[401]: [2012/11/13 07:53:54] minidlna.c:754: fatal: No IP address automatically detected!
    So I guess it has to do something with the network, I am using DHCP, with systemd + net-auto-wired.service.
    I have found this: https://ask.fedoraproject.org/question/ … r-dhcp-has
    They have solved the problem by changing the after part in the unit by adding: dbus-org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.target
    Since I do not use networkmanager, this is not an option for me. The current, unmanipulated state of the minidlna unit is:
    [Unit]
    Description=minidlna server
    After=network.target
    [Service]
    Type=forking
    User=nobody
    ExecStart=/usr/sbin/minidlna -P /var/run/minidlna/minidlna.pid
    PIDFile=/var/run/minidlna/minidlna.pid
    [Install]
    WantedBy=multi-user.target
    What I have noticed is that it refers to a network.target in the after section, but it seems to me that I don't have one.
    I only have:
    UNIT LOAD ACTIVE SUB JOB DESCRIPTION

    Edit: having run the command again with the --all prefix:

    JOB = Pending job for the unit.
    21 loaded units listed.
    To show all installed unit files use 'systemctl list-unit-files'.
    My question is what should I add to the after part to make minidlna work upon booting? Wouldn't a graphical.target be an overkill?
    Thanks in advance.

    szebenyib wrote:(However I cannot access the internet that way, maybe because of a bad network file. Honestly I have some space to improve my network knowledge.)
    In the case of the possible bad network file. here is what it expects.  First, you need to know the router's IP address.  In the following I will assume 192.168.0.1 for the router's IP address.
    192.168.0.1 is common for D-Link routers, but it does vary by router manufacturer and model.  I believe 192.168.1.1 is common for Linksys.
    /etc/conf.d/network
    interface=eth0                                    # ethernet port to activate, usually eth0
    address=192.168.0.110                     # IP address you want the minidlna computer to have. the first 3 triads must be the same as the router's IP addr in this case 192.168.0  the fourth triad can be from 5 to 250
    netmask=24
    broadcast=192.168.0.255                  # the first 3 triads must be the same as the router's IP address and the fourth triad should be 255
    gateway=192.168.0.1                         # the IP address of your router
    In a terminal window, enter:
    systemctl restart network.service
    ping -c5 127.0.0.1
    which is localhost.  The -c5 means ping 5 times then quit.  If you get: 5 packets transmitted, 5 received, 0% packet loss    then the ping was successful, which means
    that the ethernet port (usually eth0) is active.  If this ping is not successful, go back and check the syntax and spelling in both /etc/conf.d/network and /etc/systemd/system/network.service
    If the ping is successful:
    ping -c5 192.168.0.1
    and ping the router.
    If you cannot ping the router's IP address, then there is still something wrong in one of the two involved files. or the router's settings need to be changed.
    If you can ping the router's IP address successfully and still cannot get to the internet, you probably have DNS server issues.
    ping -c5 google.com
    ping -c5 8.8.8.8
    If you cannot ping google.com but can ping 8.8.8.8 then you have DNS problems, see Arch WIKI resolv.conf
    My network is a mixture of DHCP and STATIC IP addresses.  In my router, I have the DHCP server enabled to give IP addresses between 192.168.0.10 and 192.168.0.60
    this gives the router 50 DHCP addresses to work with which is more that enough for my home network.  The rest of the addresses between 192.168.0.61 and 192.168.0.250
    can be used as static addresses.  Just an example, this can be changed as necessary.

  • I fully downloaded an audiobook on my iPad and it started working fine but then it stopped reading my book. How can I get it to work again?

    I downloaded an audiobook and it started working but then it stopped. Is there anyway I can redownload my audiobook so that it starts working completely?

    This is a ridiculous policy and it interferes with how most people would listen to an audio book since they are quite lengthy. I'm traveling, so I throw the audio book on using my iPad and I get 60% of the way through the book on my trip. I come home, I want to listen to the rest of it via iTunes on my stereo through AirPlay. And this can't be done?
    This is the last audiobook I buy from iTunes until they *fix* this... and it IS something that requires fixing whether that means negotiating more aggressively with the audiobook providers or changing something at the software layer. It completely ruins many peoples' experience!
    It's funny because a friend of mine suggested buying it, then downloading it from a torrent just so I could use the book the way I wanted to use the book. Is it not sad that to create a positive overall user experience you have to resort to downloading something off a torrent?
    iTunes is supposed to make things easy and accessible. I agree with jamusick's posting -- this isn't the vision Steven Jobs had for the future. This is a road block on the way there.

  • [SOLVED] apache daemon fails to start on boot, but rc.d restart works?

    I installed apache from the official repos and followed the instructions in the wiki for configuring it. I checked to make sure the http user exists, and I /etc/hosts looks good (to me). Upon boot, the daemon fails to start and I can't load local web pages, but running "rc.d restart httpd" works just fine. Since I'd rather not start it manually every time I boot, is there a way to fix this? Also, httpd is the last daemon in my DAEMONS array.

    # Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
    # of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the

    # with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "/var/log/httpd/foo_log"
    # with ServerRoot set to "/etc/httpd" will be interpreted by the
    # server as "/etc/httpd//var/log/httpd/foo_log".
    # ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's

    Per the wiki, I also tried commenting out the line that reads
    LoadModule unique_id_module modules/mod_unique_id.so
    Either way, it still fails on boot.

    The SIGTERM are from reboots, yes. I'm not absolutely sure that the process isn't running; I just know that I can't access http://localhost immediately upon reboot. I have to restart the httpd daemon, which works fine. How would I be able to tell if it's just hung?
    I checked everything.log, and I don't see anything that leaps off the page to me.

    All I notice is that my system's time is having a few problems, since you'll notice that events occur at 22:00 and change, then 17:00 and change, then back to 22:00 and change afterwards. Could this be the problem? I've had the CMOS batteries peg out on me suddenly in the last few weeks. I would hope this sytem is not also suffering a similar fate. Nothing else was happening on my system except for the standard processes from /etc/rc.conf and other standard ones, since I've just been rebooting, checking the logs, then posting here.

  • When I "share" to DVD the file is transcoded.  When it reaches 66% it starts to "finishing", but the process stops and does not proceed beyond 66%.  When I stop the sharing process I receive the following message "the share operation dvd has failed".

    When I "share: to DVD the file is transcoded.  When the sharing process gets to 66%, it changes to "finishing" "CreateDVD:waiting fro create disk to finish.  The sharing process does no go beyond 66%, and when I stop the sharing process, I receive the message "the share DVD operation has failed."
    Is this a problem with FCPX or Create DVD?  How can this problem be resolved?

    The handshake between FCP and a hidden app called Create Disk wasn't completed.
    Try this. Select a short range and Share>DVD. In Output Settings. set it to Hard Drive to save as a disk image. (Save to your Desktop so you can find it.) For menu Background, click the Add button, then cancel. That is often enough to wake up the disk burning part of this process. If it makes a disk image, try a physical disk.

  • LaunchDaemon does not start at boot, but manually

    Hi all
    I have a LaunchDaemon entry for apache that does not start at system boot.
    It contains the following keys that might affect the behaviour.
    <key>OnDemand</key>
    <false/>
    <key>RunAtLoad</key>
    <true/>
    I can manually load the script using
    sudo launchctl load /LibraryLaunchDaemomns/org.macports.svn.plist
    Maybe I did not fully understand the LaunchDaemon concept. My program is
    a wrapper that will start svnserve as a standalone server.
    As I mentioned earlier it works fine manually, both "load" and "unload" successfully start and stop the service.
    I'd appreciate any comments
    Thanks a lot

    Good evening
    I want to startup my SVN service on a local RAID volume, but need to wait
    until it is mounted. To do so I added the following to my daemons plist:
    <key>KeepAlive</key>
    <dict>
    <key>PathState</key>
    <string>/Volumes/RAID</string>
    </dict>
    Maybe this is useful to someone in this forum.
    Cheers

  • My Mac Mini doesn't reboot. It starts to boot,but in second shuts down. Is there a keyboard solution?

    I recently upgraded my MacMini Itel Duo HD to a SSD and it has worked fine for a month or so. Now I can't get it to boot without it powers down within seconds. Is there a keyboard solution?

    If 10.7.0 or later...
    Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
    One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
    PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
    If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
    Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
    Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Firefox screen saver starts to load, but fails and will not close. To get my computer back I have to do a "control/alt/delete. Why?

    I do not know which version I am using - I am truly computer illiterate. You will need to tell me what information you need, and how to find it. Sorry.
    At about the same time as this developed, I lost the ability to continually see the tool bars at the top and bottom of the screen- as if the page was too big for my screen. Don't know if they are connected problems.

    Try ( alt + cmd + esc ).  Gives you a menu of running applications, and a chance to "Force Quit".

  • Trying to create a service that starts at boot

    People,
    I'm trying to create a service that will start at boot (in single-user mode, actually). I am up and running but I do NOT want to run the service now. I only want to run the service when the machine reboots.
    I've been rummaging around all day trying to figure this out but I'm stuck. I can create a service that runs. I can create an XML file in /var/svc/manifest/site/patch-install.xml that will be read when I boot- because after I boot, I can list the service:
    svcs -a | grep patch
    disabled       18:23:23 svc:/site/patch-install:defaultI have inserted the following in my xml:
    <create_default_instance enabled='true' />and also
    <create_default_instance enabled='false' />but it makes no difference. Anyone have any idea? What is the purpose of create_default_instance? I don't understand; item 9 on http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/content/selfheal/sdev_intro.html seems rather opaque to me.
    Also, what exactly is the purpose of /var/svc/profile/ ? I tried putting some code to enable my xml but it didn't do anything. Just wondering if this might fit into the picture.
    BTW, I do not want the login prompt to appear until my method is complete.
    Thanks.

That should tell it to start at boot, but not enable it immediately.

I don't understand; item 9 on http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/content/selfheal/sdev_intro.html seems rather opaque to me.There's a difference between a "service" like network/smtp or console-login and an "instance" like network/smtp:sendmail or console-login:default. In most cases, you just want a single "default" instance of your service. The above line sets the default instance 'enabled' property to true or false. When I import your manifest as is, the service comes in as 'disabled'. If I set it to true, it comes in as 'maintenance' (almost certainly because it was enabled, tried to start, and couldn't find the start method on my machine).
    Also, what exactly is the purpose of /var/svc/profile/ ? I tried putting some code to enable my xml but it didn't do anything. Just wondering if this might fit into the picture.'profiles' are loaded exactly once, and they are mainly used to set certain services to enabled or disabled.
    3 of them are loaded if present, platform.xml, generic.xml, and site.xml. The last is not generated by the OS, but left for you to use. But it's usually only useful as a "first boot" type thing. Because if you make changes to it, it will not be reread. This isn't usually a problem because after first boot you're in control of the services. The usual thing is that at first boot the manifests load to create services, then the profiles are loaded to set then enabled or disabled. This isn't possible before that point because there's no service to modify yet.
    BTW, I do not want the login prompt to appear until my method is complete.Any login prompt like a network login, or only the console login prompt? If the latter, then you'll want a dependency so that system-console-login depends on your service. But if your service has a problem at boot time, you'd make it difficult to log in.

    Try SMC and NVRAM resets:

    Then try the safe boot again:

    Welcome to Apple Discussions Dathanb
    You have posted in the Feedback About New Discussions forum.
    As you are a first time poster, you seem to have missed the text at the top of this forum that says:
    Please Read This Before Posting Here
    If your question concerns a hardware or software technical issue, please do not post in this forum
    Go to the main Apple Discussions page, select an appropriate product category and follow the links until you reach the correct forum for your post, then click the POST NEW TOPIC link. Because your post doesn't indicate was OS you are using on your iMac, I can't give you a link to the most appropriate forum.
    Basically, though, the version of TechTool on the AppleCare disks is not compatible with newer versions of OS X and/or Macs (I can't remember which). If you don't get a satisfactory response by posting in the appropriate iMac or OS X forum, I suggest you take your iMac to the geniuses at the Apple Store. You can set up an appointment time for the same day online before you leave home.

  • Getting p2pp burn boot check failed.Windows 7 not getting started Recovery restpration completion

                                          PLEASE HELP
    Hi,I am trying to do factory recovery of my HP DV6 laptop using original HP recovery disc.My laptop has Windows 7 (64Bit) OS. I am doing below steps
    By pressing F10,entering BIOS mode, changed the BOOT ORDER to take from CD ROM and saved the setting with F10 option and then forced shutdown the laptop and inserted the 1st recovery disc
    Restarted the laptop and it started to boot and it asked for all 3 recovery disc + Supplement driver disc. All were successfully copied and installed. Laptop was restared multple times as it was being displayed on screen. I could see there were Softwares being installed, Service setting,registry setting being applied to computer and after around 1 to 1.5 hours laptop gets shut down, so i beleive all installations have been [performed.
    Now when i start my  laptop, it says
    Windows was not shut down properly choose an option and when i seelct either of the 4 options like Satrt normally or Start with command prompt or Start with Networking...everytime it takes me to screen giving belwow message:
    SAVE LOGS        DETAILS      RETRY
    In Details logs, i see below as the message
    P2PP BURNBOOT Check failed
    Possible causes:
    1. Yellow-Bang occured at device manager
    2. Some silent-install failure of applications
    3. Found failed at PININST_BBV
    4. Found failed at PININST_BBV2
    5. Found memory Dump file
    Suggestion:
    1. Checking REGDEV_BB.log for drivers
    2. Checking BBApps.log for applications
    3. Checking MEMDUMP_BBV.log for memory dump file
    1. After reading forums queries, I tried to set BIOS default by pressing F9 andf then pressing F10 ,saving and exit and then tried to reinstall everything but i get the same error.
    2.I tried changing the system date from March 18th 2015  to March 18th 2012 and then do recovery , but still getting same error
    3. I pressed F2 and did all Memory and Hard disk test and it all passed.
    So Can anyone please help me whats the issue. Thanks

    Hi there @VKD1
    Welcome to the HP Support Forums! It is a great place to find the help you need, both from other users, HP experts and other support personnel.
    I understand that your notebook is not starting after a system recovery, with a "Windows was not shutdown properly" error message.
     See if you can run the startup repair:
