Fan and Screen Issues, MBP SR 17" Hi Res

Earlier my fans ran up to 5400 rpm and stayed there (while watching a movie in quicktime, cpu loads was very light), even after getting CPU Temp down to 50 degrees. I restarted the machine and they remained there, after putting it to sleep the went back down to 2000 RPM.
Now they have risen into the 3500rpm range and have the CPU Temp to 48 degrees but are still running at this speed, very very slowly moving down. I have not been doing anything but running firefox- CPU load is negligable. This fan behavior seems out of the ordinary to me.
Also, my screen has a lighter band across the bottom, I would like to know if this is normal, see pics below. Thanks.

The lighter band on the bottom portion of the screen along with the screen being unevenly lit is considered normal by the folks at the Apple Store. I have been through a bunch of 17" Hi Res screens and also bought it to the notice of all the on duty store managers. They acknowledge it but do not have an answer or a solution for me. It's not their fault because all the units that I have come across (which is quite a few) seem to display these artifacts.A few of the non Hi Res screens also displayed the same symptoms. I have given up bringing it to their attention. The Hi Res screen that I have which I got earlier this evening has dark spot(like there is no light) in the bottom left and right corner of the screen. I think it is just the nature of the beast.
Hope this helps.

  • Disappointment With Fan And Screen _Quality_ On New ThinkPad T430

Happy New Year.  I'm typing this as a means to blow off some steam and to warn anyone considering the purchase of a Lenovo product.  Yesterday I unboxed a new ThinkPad T430 (2344BMU), my second.  A year ago I purchased my first T430 (23445GU) and have been nothing but happy with it since, however, given the chance to upgrade the processor I took advantage.  The first thing I noticed when I powered up the new laptop was that the fan sounds like a small turbine when it kicks in, with a distinct whirring sound as it winds up.  This was a major surprise as the fan on my first T430 rarely ever caught my attention, and then only when really pushing the CPU.  The second thing I noticed, as the two laptops sat side-by-side, was that the screen on the new T430, despite having the same 1600x900 resolution, was noticably less vibrant than the old laptop's screen, as if there's a fine coating of dust on it.  Barely a half hour of research later I learned that Lenovo has multiple contracts for fan and screen production, with a distinct difference in quality among the manufacturers, and that it basically comes down to luck regarding screen and fan quality on any given computer sold by Lenovo.  Call me picky, but when I spend $1500 on something I expect a certain level of quality.  Here Lenovo has failed miserably.  Given that my purchase wasn't directly with Lenovo but through a third party, it seems that I've no recourse other than to grind my teeth while using my "awesome" new T430.  I'm actually typing this on the old laptop while updating the drivers and software on the new one, and it's taking a real effort to not smash the new laptop against the wall.  The fan is that intrusive.  Anyway, if even one person reads this and is saved the annoyance of my situation, then I can live with it.  My suggestion would be to never order a Lenovo product online, but to instead find a means to purchase a computer that you've already taken for a test drive so that you know you'll be happy with it.  Good luck.

Here is the fail:  "...my purchase wasn't directly with Lenovo but through a third party"

  • Fan and Temperature Issues with certain apps

    Hi there
I have what seems to be an issue with the cooling on my 2011 Mac Mini where when running some apps the cooling fams for the CPU seem not to kick in.
To give an example I do a lot of online gaming and when playing LoTRO on my Mini when the CPU temp gets to around 78-80c mark the CPU fan ramps up to keep the CPU cool which I guess is normal however yesterday I was doing some audio recording / editing in Garageband and noticed the CPU temp was at 93c but yet the fans hadn't kicked in.
I did a bit of research and installed SMCFanControl to monitor what the CPU fan was doing. Again using LoTRO when the CPU got to around 80c the fans ramped up to around 4800rpm and the temperature lowered yet with Garageband even with the CPU at 91c the fan was only spinning at 1800rpm. I know 90c is still below the threshold of safe operation for the Core i5 2415M CPU (which is 100c) but not by much. This is a real concern for me the hotter the CPU runs the shorter its life will be. It is unfortunate that SMCFanControl is unable to directly control the CPU Fan in the 2011 Mac Mini
Can anyone out there can shed any light on why this is happening?
    Jonty

Thank you everybody for your sound advice - Normally John Hammer1 I would agree with you, if OSX can do a task then let it do it and not use 3rd party software, but however in this case I don't think OSX was doing a very good job at cooling the system. To use an analogy you wouldn't drive your car with the temperature gauge constantly near the red line as it would damage your engine. This is how my MM was running when editing (of which I do quite a lot) and having a computer constantly running near its thermal limits isn't doing it any good.
I feel (and have always felt) that my Mac Mini has been lacking in cooling and that whilst the MM is a pretty little computer its performance has always been hampered by its lack of cooling. I'd rather have a bit more noise from the fan and have a more efficient computer.
I have installed Fan Control 1.2 and so far it is doing its stuff ok. Like den.thed I'm a bit old school, I usually keep my Macs for around 4-5 years and I want this one to last.
Again thanks everyone for your advice.

  • Fan and Temperature Issues

    Hey everyone,
Recently my fan started getting pretty loud. I opened up the back of my 2009 13" Macbook Pro and gave it a through and through with a compressed air canister, I also unmounted the fan and shot some compressed air into it as well. Now I'm kinda worried, because that only kinda dulled out the noise a bit, and the internal temperature of my CPU is getting a little too hot for comfort(100 C and up). The problem isn't so much the temperature, but the fact that in response to these high temperatures my fan is consistently at a MAXIMUM of 1500 RPM according to SMC Fan Control. Even if, using SMC, I set the minimum fan speed to 4000 or 6000 RPM, my fan just stays at consistently low speeds. Would opening up the fan itself and cleaning/lubing solve the problem or should I just replace the fan altogether?
    Thanks in advance

Im having a similar problem with my late 2009 Macbook (white). All of a sudden the fan has been acting up, making uneven and inconsistent whirring sounds. At first it didnt happen right away but now it pretty much starts acting up within 10 minutes of turning on. I downloaded smcFanControl and learned that at some points CPU was in the 90C range and the fan would jump between 0rpm to 1500rpm. I turned it off for an hour or so just now and it's been at a solid 42C and 1999rpm for about an hour now... like i said it's REALLY inconsistent.
based on what i read i guess i dont have to worry about the temperatures so much with this model? I havent gotten past 94C just yet.... Is the best thing to do just replace the fan? Im not sure that would even solve the problem and I'd like to be sure before i spend a cool (har) $100 on something that wont work.
Do laptop coolers help at all? Is there one you guys would recommend for this kind of thing? I just dont want this to be the second hard drive to FRY on me because of a lousy fan.
plus i'm a student, this laptop needs to last me at LEAST 2 more years.
thanks, any temporary fixes would be nice too.

  • IMac 27" (Late 2012) Loud Fan and Overheating Issues, causing Hard Drive Failure

    Hi all,
I'm having some serious overheating issues with my new iMac. Any help to help me solve this problem would be gladly appreciated since it's really beginning to bug me. Here's what's has happened:
I noticed in the first few hours of switching the iMac on that there was a short burst of very loud fan noise. This has been happening about once every two days since and every time I haven't been doing any heavy processing with the system. I've noticed that the main fan will spin, on average, at 1200rpm. Is that normal? The iMac is very well ventilated and sits right next to a window...
I have also boot camped the iMac with a copy of Windows 8 so I could run some fairly power-hungry games. I intentionally purchased a high end iMac (27" display, Intel Core i7 3.4GHz, Nvidia GeForce 680MX Graphics, 1TB Fusion drive) and expected the iMac to run games flawlessly. However, after a few days, I noticed that the CPU and GPU had shot up to a worrying 80°C whenever I ran power-hungry games, with a very loud hissing noise from the fan. After running games for about 10 minutes, the fan will stop hissing, causing the GPU and CPU to increase to 100°C. The iMac then fails and switches off unexpectedly without any warning. After analysing the Windows event logs, I received an event ID 41: The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.
As this occurred about six times whilst I was testing my iMac's performance, I think my hard drive has now begun to fail - sometimes I will hear the hard drive make a click noise, about once every 5 seconds. Sometimes, the clicking noise causes OS X and Windows to run very slowly (even though minimal RAM is being used and nothing too intensive (Safari, Mail etc.) is being processed). Running Repair Disk and Repair Disk Permissions under OS X's recovery mode as well as a repair in chkdsk in Windows suggests that there were no problems with the hard drive. All I can do is wait a while for the clicking noise to stop, and then performance will increase. I have backed up everything externally.
I have also performed a reset of the SMC as well as the PRAM, which hasn't really helped.
Any help will be appreciated. I will gladly provide any extra logs etc. if they're needed.
    Thanks so much,
    Alex.

That's the default fan speed on iMacs, so there isn't any problem with this.

You must know that Boot Camp isn't compatible with Windows 8 and that Apple hasn't released drivers for Windows 8, so it can fail. Install Windows 7 inmediately until Apple launches updated drivers.
As it looks like the hard disk is damaged, I would take the Mac to an Apple Store. It's in warranty, so it should be repaired for free or you should receive a new one

  • Loud fan and overheating issue.

I bought a secondhand macbook about 8 months ago, and recently the fan has started making a god awful noise, and it stops and starts every now and then,  and my laptop is heating up. Is this a hardware problem? and will it be expensive to fix?

    1) Thermal sensor issue
    2) Fan issue
Try an SMC reset. See if this helps.

  • Portege R100: fan and screen

my portege r100's fan is not working anymore and i wonder do the service change only fan or mainboard totaly...and my screen has 24 dead colour pixels what do i have to do
    kind regards

    Hi Murat,
In my experience repairers will take the fastest option for them rather than the cheapest for you. So if your fan can be replaced easily without changing the main board then that is what they will do.
With regard to your dead pixels the only real solution is to replace the screen.
I think this is a job more suited to a Service Agent,

  • HP Envy Hinge and Screen Issue

HP Envy model 6-1010ea has a weak hinge which has now also affected the screen.
I see that this is a common problem.
    Please help

Thanks for posting but I really don't think you can comment if you are not aware of the specific issue.
If you search for the HP envy hinge issue you will see many many posts that relate to this and in each instance HP has collected the machine and fixed for the customer.
I have alraeady had this experience with one of the two machines I own and HP picked up the laptop, repaired and returned it at no charge.

  • Windows 8.1 Upade video and screen issues

After installing the windows 8.1 update on my very new HP desktop computer I was nothing but dissapointed. First the update messed with my screen and shrunk it. I fixed this problem later. My current unsolved problem is that now I cannot watch youtube videos any higher than 360p at maximum and sometimes this resolution still goes pixalated and choppy, stalling the video. As well as youtube, my sims 3 game now is conciderably less clear and the image quality has been reduced from when I first bought this computer. I was told that this computer (with graphics card) would play my sims wonderfully and it did, until a month after i got it and installed windows 8.1. I am not very good with computers and i would appreciate any help.

    Sam, welcome to the forum.
I am going to recommend reverting to Win 8.0.  I had nothing but problems with my HP computer when I updated to Win 8.1.  I blamed the problems on everything but Win 8.1.  I finally came to the realization that it was the culprit.  I did a full System Recovery using the Recovery Discs and my computer runs far better.  I am going to wait a bit to try it again.  I am not certain that it is ready for prime time at this point.

  • HDD and screen issues - disaster after disaster ... Crying my eyes out

Hi I am new here. I hope I can find some help here. Many thanks in advance.
2 days ago when I turned on my iMac all I got was a grey screen with a apple sign or a blinking question mark (force quit many times).  I followed all the solution guidance I could find on this site. The safe mode couldn't even funtion - the computer just kept turning itself off. Finally when I performed Disk Utilities - Disc recovery ( after trying to repair permissions many times under single user mode and DU) the messages said that the disk could not be recovered.
I hadn't done any back up since i last reinstalled(upgraded) my OS about 3 months ago because all my hard drives were full and had been looking into buying a new one.
I have some very important files that were the result of my hard work these recent months (yes, no back up ... I've been crying my eyes out .... I've been using this iMac for more then 3 years and never had any major problem before this.)
I've noticed that many people recommend DiskWarrior on this forum. Out of desperation I bought a copy from the Apple store although one of the stuff there told me that " it would not do anything more than Disk Utilties can do - don't waste your money! " ( I also bought a new WD My Passport HD).
And guess what.... He was right!
After the 'rebuild', DW simply says that " the new directory cannot replace the origial becase of a disk malfunction". And under the 'preview', I compare the original mac files ( which were the same as while i previewed  under DU), and it appeared that DW only recovered a few useless old files (date 2007) with files names I cannot recognised.
In the 'Home' file it appears completely empty. In the 'Users' files, the file under my name 'Sophie' appears empty as well. However, when I look at the 'Users' size, it's 153.88 GB while the only other file under the 'Users', 'Shared' is only 422.1 k ( I never placed anything in shared files before.)
I therefore presumed that most of my files must be hiding in the 'Users' files. So I use the DW funtion to copy the entire 'Users' file to my new WD My Passport. It took more than 11 hours and still couldn't finish the whole copy. During the copying process I tried to go back to the DiskWarrior help section and the whole thing just crushed.
    These are my questions:
1: Now there is a 'Users' file in my My Passport. It still appears empty but the size shows to be 139.1 GB. Do you think I can recovery anything from there? How?
2: After leaving DiskWarrior copying files overnigh from 'user' to my new HD, it has left deep marks of the two menu boxes on the screen. Is my screen fxxxed as well? Is there anything I can do to get rid of the marks?
After spending almost 200 pounds that I didn't have, I have managed to made more damage and there is still no hope of geting back my countless hours of hard work. I feel very depressed. I will be so grateful if anyone could offer some hope.
    Thank you!!

I looked at some of what you said earlier:
In the 'Home' file it appears completely empty. In the 'Users' files, the file under my name 'Sophie' appears >empty as well. However, when I look at the 'Users' size, it's 153.88 GB while the only other file under the >'Users', 'Shared' is only 422.1 k ( I never placed anything in shared files before.)
I use the DW funtion to copy the entire 'Users' file to my new WD My Passport. It took more than 11 hours and still couldn't finish the whole copy. .
1: Now there is a 'Users' file in my My Passport. It still appears empty but the size shows to be 139.1 GB.
I have already reformatted my entire hard drive
FileVault works by placing your entire Home into a single encrypted item called a "sparsebundle", and unfortunately that generally leads to an "all or nothing " situation in terms of data recovery. You generally can't recover just "some files", because they don't exist in unencrypted form - you have to hope that the sparsebundle is either still intact and fully functional, or at the very least still contains all the data and can be repaired. It's somewhat disconcerting that the size of /Users was 153GB on the original disk, and is now only 139GB on the Passport, with a history that the copy process by DW did not complete properly.
Since you have reformatted the original HD, I doubt that a fully intact 140GB+ Filevault sparsebundle can ever be recovered from it, and again, this is usually an all-or-nothing situation. That means that your hope has to be that the sparsebundle was fully copied to the external drive, is still intact, and will recognize its password. That's still a possibility, and we could explore it further here if you wish, Or, as Bee suggests, you might want to explore sending your machine and external drive to a professional data recovery service. I think that route would be very expensive, but you could inquire first.

  • "Guy)" and screen issue

Has anyone else noticed that when you try to type the word "guy" or a a typo'd version of the word, it will always correct it to "guy)".
Is there a reason for this?
Also, another problem with my phone seems to be the screen's response to waking up. Often (and it's been happening more than normal) my phone's screen will refuse to turn on or respond.
For example, (this just happened less than 5 minutes ago), I just received a text message, my phone vibrated and made it's nice little bell sound, yet, the screen didn't turn on. When I pressed home, the screen flashed my background (for less than a second, hardly enough for me to even see it), turned off, then turned on white a nice plain white background and turned off again. I pressed Home once more and it was a nice white screen that lasted until I hit the sleep/wake button.
After that, it took several presses of Home and the Sleep/Wake button to get it to turn on and stay on (The screen remained off for that time).
The unlock screen (now finally on) would actually be frozen, the spotlight on the text not showing up, and sliding my finger (as to unlock) would cause it to freak out for a few moments (I don't know how to describe this part) before eventually locking.
Then, turning it on would seem pretty standard, as if nothing has happened.
The problem is, sometimes when I also receive calls and the phone freaks like that, I can't answer the call because the screen remains off or frozen.
Other times it will happened when I just try to unlock my phone.
Both of these problem plagued my previous iPhone (which was replaced), so, it's something I'm not too happy about.
Does anyone have and tips or is experiencing something similar?
P.S. Don't worry, I've tried the R's solution, and not even restoring has helped me so far.

Don't know about the "guy" thing but it you have done the standard troubleshooting procedures with no success, you need to call AppleCare or make an appointment at an Apple Store since it sounds like you have another defective iPhone.
I have no other tips and I've never experienced the same since 6/29 last year.

If You Think iOS 7 Feels Slow Here’s How to Speed It Up
    http://osxdaily.com/2013/09/23/ios-7-slow-speed-it-up/
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

  • Black Screen on MBP, Can hear chime and can boot from HDD via another MBP!

Hope someone can help me here, as I'm at my wits end.
    I've got two issues, one with my MacBook Pro 17in, 4GB RAM, 160GB 7200rpm (2008) and another with my iMac 24in. 4GB RAM, 500GB 7200rpm (2009).
Firstly the MBP, left work on Thursday last week, got home, powered up the MBP and got a black screen!!! Tried resetting PRAM, SMC, booting in safe mode, removing and re-installing RAM, removing battery and mains power and leaving off overnight etc etc, yet nothing happens. Benn all over the forums and have not found any solution to get my beloved MBP working on it's own. I can boot off the HDD using another MBP 15in, re-install Snow Leopard and as far as I can tell the HDD is fine, as I have run disk utility and it tells me the HDD is OK.
I can't figure this out and it's doing my head in, as I use this laptop for business use and just can't afford to go out and buy another Mac. I should point out that this MBP never had any issues when running on Leopard, but ever since I upgraded to Snow Leopard, I have had nothing, but trouble. I did a clean install, in fact I have done it at least twice, even erasing the HDD securely, both at 7pass and 35pass, yet I have had permissions issues regularly and on the odd occasion, I have also had the problem of the HDD not being recognised.
The iMac is nearly the same, but the screen is working, although the iMac doesn't see the HDD no matter what way I do, again, reset PRAM, SMC, safe boot etc etc. In truth the iMac has been a lot more unreliable, but with the screen working, if I can get any solutions here, then I'll be working to work on that without the need or hassle of working via another.
I think that the MBP is only just still under warranty, but the iMac definitely is, but I need at least one working for business use, so really only want to let Apple have one at a time to look at/repair etc.
Ideally, as the HDD is working in the MBP, if I could get a solution to the black screen issue, then I could do without the iMac for whatever time it takes, so if there is anyone out there that can help, I'd be so grateful.
One last thing, when I bought the iMac 24in., I also bought an iMac 20in., but I never upgraded the 20in. to Snow Leopard and to this day, it has worked flawlessly, without a single issue ever.
Perhaps, I'm getting paranoid here, but there seems to me to be a link between the ongoing and regularly occurring problems with both Macs ant the upgrade to Snow Leopard. Why also, or is it just pure unadulterated coincidence that both the MBP and the iMac 24in have failed at pretty much the same time??!!!!
I'm going mental here, so I hope someone out there has a better fix, then me overdosing on Prozac!!
    PS
I'm not a mac expert, not good with a soldering iron either, but I'm capable of following good instructions.

Concerning your imac, have you tried installing the OS on an external drive and running the iMac from that? My friend in Texas had her iMac's hard drive vanish, so we installed the OS on an external FireWire drive I happened to have and then restored her data from a recent backup. So far I haven't had time to install the drive in her iMac, so it's been running off of the external for a long time now. Perhaps you could do something like that so you could at least have the use of the iMac while your MBP is in the shop. Once you get the MBP back, you can send in the iMac.
Be sure to report both of these to Apple and get case numbers so that you can document that the issues started while you were still under warranty--especially for the MBP that's about to go out of warranty.
    Good luck!

  • Start-up grey screen lock and waking issues

Hello, I've been having several problems with my iMac G5 that seemed to all start at the same time just in this last week:
1/ Trouble starting computer - during start up the usual tone is heard, then a grey screen appears and the start up process stops. I am forced to restart and try again. After several attempts the computer makes it to the grey apple logo and it finally starts up. The computer works perfectly once it is finally on all of the way - except for the following sleep thing . . .
2/ computer won't start up again after sleeping - EITHER screen remains black and fan noise is heard, OR screen image comes back but then distorts slightly, a dark gray washes over it, and a restart notice appears (also distorted).
I have tried the follwing techniques to fix the problems:
    - Disc Utility check: everything fine
    - Hardware Test from disk: everything fine
    - Re-set PRAM
    - Tried starting holding down Option Key - had to shut down after endless wait
    - Looked for new firmware - what I found didn't help
    - Removed new Software - no change
    - Tested with various peripherals disconnected - no dice
I have NOT tried Safe Boot - safe mode would turn off many of the functions I use most.
I'm not sure what else I can do. I am, of course, aware of the "Repair Extension Program for Video and Power Issues" but as I live in Japan, outside Tokyo, it is going to be a long haul to get my computer in to be looked at.
Could this be fixed any other way by me? Or does this sound like a classic "G5 power/video issue" and I should just bite it and take it in?
Many thanks for your time in replying,

Hi Corrie, welcome to Discussions. Unfortunately I think you hit the nail right on the head. I would find a way to get this done with extension program because paying to fix it maybe cost inhibitive. (could you ship it to a friend or relative in the USA and have them take it in)???
For the sleep/wake issue you can try resetting the SMU, read the link below and it will show you how. Good luck Bob
