Fast select , slow insert

hi ,
i have a query that is fast in selection but somewhat very slow with the insertion with either create table as select OR the insert into table statment
my table is an empty table and does not have any indexes created

Slow inserts

We suddently started seeing some slow inserts on some test boxes. All boxes are on RedHat 5 and 10.2.0.1.
We have a multi-tier web application conencting to the DB using connection pool and inserting about a 100000 records in a table. They first do a select, if not found then its an insert. So to take the other pieces out of the puzzle. I wrote a small plssql, which does a select and then does an insert based on some random data generated.
When I ran this on my test system(db1) it ran about 37 sec, cpu usage was very low. When I ran this on the system that was reported to be slow(db2), it ran for about 30 minutes and CPU was pegged.
Then I think we let this system and when I tried today, on the system (db2), it completed in about 35 sec. This was wierd. So I re-created the schema (dropped the user) and then ran the test, it was slow again and the CPU was pegged.
So I thought well may be since the system was not touched (no inserts or any activity) the stats jobs ran, etc that could have been the reason. So ran stats on the database and the schema but no use, it was still slow.
So then I ran the PL/SQL block on another system (db3) where the schema was created but no iserts or and activty on this box for atleast a few days. But then it was extemely slow in this box as well and cpu was pegged.
All these boxes have the same table, indexes, they are all identical. Any reason why this could be happening and what else should I be looking for?

So I used

Othere than a couple of these I don't see any other wait events, should I be looking for something else or am I doing the trace wrong. I think this is equivalent to what you suggested.

Slow inserts after log size increase

I have an app that does 10k-50k consecutive SELECTs and INSERTs as part of a loading operation. Recently, I enlarged the redo logs from 10M to 100M, which appears about right, based on the frequency of log switches (half a dozen/day). Trouble is, now the load takes 5 times longer (20-25 min vs. 5). Any thoughts? I thought redo logs that were too small caused poor performance, b/c of increased checkpoint activity, but I can't imagine why larger redo logs would slow inserts down.

Logically the only difference a larger online redo log should make is that the number of checkpoints invoked due to log switches should decrease. But a larger online redo log will take longer to archive.
Where did you place the larger online redo log and where does the archive redo log go to? Is this performance decrease consistent or does it appear when certain redo logs are in use?
Even if your logical disk are different it could be the physical disk for some of your files are now the same where before this was not true.
The suggested statspack is probably a good place to start but you might also want to take some OS IO stats during the run also.

Will Yosemite Make My Computer Faster or Slower?

I have been holding off for quite a while when Yosemite came out. I tried the beta, but quickly reverted back to Mavericks because of that pesky expand button. That's not why I'm here though. I need to know if and when I download Yosemite again, will it make my 2011 MBP 13 inch faster or slower? I heard Yosemite is a RAM hog, but I have 16 GB of RAM, so I don't think that should be an issue. What do you all think? I can give more information on the system if you need.
Edit: I should also mention I plan on using the computer mainly for gaming. It responds well to most games already, but can have (very small) issues if running skyrim or other higher quality 3D games.

That is a misconception propagated by people who do not understand that Apple memory management changed with OS 10.9 Mavericks. For more efficient use of RAM, Mavericks and Yosemite now claim a lot of the free RAM for faster access. This Apple article may help you understand it:

Within the last six weeks, I upgraded two of our Macs to Yosemite and see no difference in performance from the prior OS versions installed: 10.9 on a 2012 non-Retina Macbook Pro and 10.8 on a 2011 iMac. Both have the entry-level processors for their respective models, the 2.5Ghz i5.
Neither computer has third-party anti-virus maintenance software, not do that have the questionable software that comes bundled with "name-brand" external hard drives.

Jdbc thin driver bulk binding slow insertion performance problem

We have a third party application reporting slow insertion performance, while I traced the session and found out most of elapsed time for one insert execution is sql*net more data from client, it appears bulk binding is being used here because one execution has 200 rows inserted. I am wondering whether this has something to do with their jdbc thin driver(10.1.0.2 version) and our database version 9205. Do you have any similar experience on this, what other possible directions should I explore?
here is the trace report from 10046 event, I hide table name for privacy reason.
Besides, I tested bulk binding in PL/SQL to insert 200 rows in one execution, no problem at all. Network folks confirm that network should not be an issue as well, ping time from app server to db server is sub milisecond and they are in the same data center.

I have exactly the same problem, I tried to find out what is going on, changed several JDBC Drivers on AIX, but no hope, I also have ran the process on my laptop which produced a better and faster performance.
Therefore I made a special solution ( not practical) by creating flat files and defining the data as an external table, the oracle will read the data in those files as they were data inside a table, this gave me very fast insertion into the database, but still I am looking for an answer for your question here. Using Oracle on AIX machine is a normal business process followed by a lot of companies and there must be a solution for this.

How do I select a field and between selected rows insert auto-incremented numbers?

I have a spreadsheet in Numbers '09 and I want to number the rows so that I can sort by the original order after I've already sorted by different items. In Excel this is fairly easy, but how do you do this in Numbers? How do I select a series of rows in a column and tell it to automatically insert numbers incremented from one to the total number of rows?

Hi Philip,
As an alternative to the method Yvan pointed out, you could use a formula.
(NOTE: This takes longer to write than to do.
(CAUTION: Make sure you use Copy/Paste Values to replace the formulas with the calculated numbers before sorting.))
Choose a column in which to place the numbers.
In the first non-header cell in the column enter the formula:
=ROW()
Select the whole column by clicking its column reference tab.
Then use command-click to deselect the header cells above the one where you placed the formula.
With the cell containing the formula and all of the column below it selected, go:
Insert (menu) > Fill > Fill Down
The formula will be filled into the rest of the column and the numbers calculated.
With the cells still selected, COPY, then go Edit > Paste Values.
This replaces the 'live' formulas with the numbers themselves, and prevents the numbers being recalculated when the rows are sorted.

ESB performance issue: takes too long to select and insert records in DBs

Hi,
I have an ESB service which has to select data from seven different tables(using join operations) of one database and insert it into a single table of another database.
It takes unduly long time to do this operation.
For ex: it takes over 2 hours to select and insert 3000 records.
When ran the same query to select the records from the tables using SQL developer, it took only 23 seconds.
Do I need to change any configuration settings in the enterprise manager or someother place to increase the performance. Someone please advice.
I am using Oracle SOA Suite 10.1.3.4

How to select for insert a long column through database link?

How may a long column (for example a sql server 2000 text column) be selected for insert into a clob column in table in 10g over a database link without invoking ora-00997?
I've tried using dbms_metadata_util.long2clob without success over a database link.

Is the remote database an Oracle database? Or are you selecting data from SQL Server 2000 over a database link via Heterogeneous Services? What is the data type of the column in the remote database (LONG? TEXT? Something else?)?

Capture playback is fast then slow

I have read similar posts, but no real answers.
I capture video from my mini dv camera and when i play the video back and try and edit it starts off too fast then slows to a crawl. When I stop the video it jumps back a few frames like it is jumping to a keyframe (it has no keyframes).
I am editing on a brand new mac pro. it is dual quad core with 6gb of ram. i can't imagine that the system can't keep up. i know people like to blame the graphics board, but i have 512mb of video ram. my pc with the same amount of video ram plays back just fine. my laptop with less video ram plays back just fine. I am using CS3
is there some setting i need to adjust?

I have never had a crash with this computer (or with the slower one I replaced) which I think is at least partly due to picking a well designed motherboard and not trying to overclock
Mine is not the fastest there is today... so when I'm rendering from video to DVD I just start the process and go to bed... and when I wake up in the morning, the job is done and the .ISO is ready to burn to DVD
Someday, when Windows 7 is at SP1 or SP2 and Premiere is certified for Win7 64bit, and the price of the Intel i7 has come down, I will build another computer for 4-6 times the speed I have now
I will, again, pick a motherboard that has good reviews (maybe another Intel... maybe Asus... maybe ???) and most likely another ATI video card (I have had better results with ATI -vs- nVidia) and I will NOT overclock the CPU or memory!!!

How to convert .mp3 or wma to m4b to player faster or slower in ipod

Hi, is there an application for the mac or even the pc, where I can take my medical class lectures were are 2 hours in length and convert a wma or mp3 to a audiobook file so they can be played in the ipod at a faster or slower rate? I read that I can put them in itunes and change it to aac and then change the m4a to m4b and the files will be as an audiobook which can be played blacker at a faster rate on my ipod. It didn't work. I have audio books that I bought from audible.com and they play at a faster or slower rate, I would love this feature for the lectures that I record from my class. Is this possible?

I use iSquint to convert the .flv to .mp4.
Then AudioExtract to rip the audio off (in AIFF format).
I add the new file to iTunes and convert it to .mp3, sometimes.
It's all freeware, but it'll ask you every time to donate or purchase.
There are no restrictions on iSquint.
There is a 3 file limit on AudioExtract. But all you have to do is quit after the first one and open it again.
Before I had AudioExtract, I'd import the .mp4 into iMovie and put in in a movie file and extract audio that way.

Selectively slow router

I've been having a problem the past few days with my Airport Extreme N router. When trying to do certain activities, like certain websites or certain devices, it chooses not to load or connect without a few tries. A few of the sites include Amazon, MacUpdate, and Facebook. When connecting directly to my cable modem it works at normal speed. My Apple TV wouldn't connect until after a few restarts of the base station. The selectively slow internet connection is present on multiple computers all on the same sites. I've tried both hard and soft resets of the base station, but nothing seems to work.
Any ideas?

in the Ethernet connection settings it has both "DNS servers" listed ( which is just the IP address of the router ) and the "search domains" pane that lists the domain of the the ISP. The "DNS server(s)" fields in the Airport Utility look very different. are they supposed to the same? how would I go about fixing this?

Sharp edges with "fast selection"

Hi,
i am using the german version of Photoshop CS5.
I am using the "Schnellauswahlwerkzeug" (translation: fast selection tool - I do not know the correct english term)
After creating the selection, I create a pixelmask (100%, soft edge 0 Px). If I look into the mask (clicking on the mask with alt-key), I can see grey pixels at the edge of my selection.
How can I avoid transparent or semi-transparent pixels at the edge of my selection when using the "Schnellauswahlwerkzeug - W" (fast selection tool using shortcut key W)?
I would like to have a sharp edge.
I have a picture with a grey sky at the top and some other objects at the bottom. I am using the new mask to apply filters to the sky. Then I would like to apply a filter only on the other part of the picture - so i duplicate the layer amd invert the mask. However, if I look on both layers of the same picture, you can see semi transparent pixels at the edge of the masks. If I had a perfectly sharp edge, they should fit together without any such pixels.
Any hints?

To answer your point, "it does not seem logical"...
Generally speaking keep in mind that Photoshop is less adept at editing individual pixels than at editing images overall. Its focus is on the "bigger picture" if you'll allow a small pun. For many uses in photo editing, a "hard" edge would yield jaggies and other artifacts that many folks would find to be a problem. That's just a general observation.
