Fax keeps ringing on Officejet 5740

I just purchased an Officejet 5740.  It is hooked up to a fax line - a line used only for faxes.  When I print something (or sometimes when I don't) the fax will ring but there will be no fax.  This happens over and over again.  The tech said to take out the power cord for a minute...which I did.  Unfortunately, while he was on the phone it did ot ring so it looked like this solved the problem.  It did not.  It keeps ringing every few minutes.  Can you help?  It seems that HP does not have an email where I can email my question/issue.  Thank you.  My email is[edited email by moderator].

Hi @thsenterprises
I have never heard of this type of issue. I checked for a firmware update for your model and didn't one.
Do you have the printer connected directly to a wall outlet or is it in a surge protector or power bar? Even if you have been using a surge protector/power bar all this time and you feel it is not the cause, please connect it to a wall outlet just so we can eliminate the power source as the root cause.   Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector
In this document you will see, ISSUE: Problems or issues may arise when an HP LaserJet series printer is connected to an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), a power strip, or a surge protector
^ This is not limited to Laserjet printers.
If the persists, or the power cable was already connected to a wall outlet, I suggest calling us back again. If you are in Canada or US call 800 474 6836, or you can Contact HP Worldwide.
HP printers generally have a 1 year warranty from their purchase date, you can verify the warranty using the following link if you issuewould like; warranty check.
I hope this helps.

    Hi cookiesz219,
I found this in the user guide for HP Officejet E710n-z available here: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02519721.pdf
    Could you try:
    1. On the printer control panel, touch > Setup, then touch Fax Setup then Basic Fax Setup
    2. Turn on Auto Answer
    3. Set Rings to Answer to the number of rings.
    I hope this helps.

  • Can't send faxes from my HP Officejet Pro 8615

Hello. I cant send faxes from my HP Officejet 8615.

    Hello @Dee53,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that you're experiencing issues when trying to send faxes from your HP Officejet Pro 8615 e-All-in-One Printer. I would like to assist you today with resolving this issue. However, in order for me to provide you with accurate support to resolve this issue with you I do need to clarify a few things.
    1. Are you using a dedicated fax line or is it shared with your phone?
    2. If the fax is shared with your phone, is there an answering machine or voice mail service on that line?
If so, how many rings does it take your answering machine or voice mail to pick up on?
    3. Do you use distinctive ring?
    4. Are you using a DSL or VOIP phone line? If you're not sure you would have to ask your phone company.
    5. Are you getting an error message when trying to send a fax?
    6. Are you able to receive faxes?
Once I have the answers to my questions above I will be more than happy to guide you to a solution. I look forward to hearing from you!

  • Why does my brand new HP Officejet 5740 have extremely poor quality scan results?

My brand new HP Officejet 5740 has extremely poor quality scan results!
Excessive and unacceptable amounts of white specs appear in the resulting  jpegs, of what are  perfectly clean, orignal, dark,  documents, pages and  photos,  when placed into the scanner.  Why is this happening???
Has anyone else experienced this problem?  If so, how did you resolve it?

    Hi @mpstone1,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! I see you are not happy with the scan quality on your new HP Officejet 5740, when you scan something you are getting alot of white specs.
I would like you to first perform a Hard Reset on the OJ 5740:
    1. Unplug all cables and memory cards from the printer. Unplug the power cord, directly from the back of the printer while the printer is still turned on.
    2. Unplug the other end of the cord from the power source.
    3. If there is a power module on the power cord, disconnect one end and reconnect it.
    4. After 60 seconds, plug the cord directly into a wall outlet (not a surge protector or battery backup as they can cause the printer to lose basic functionality over time).
    5. Plug the power cord into the back of the printer.
    6. The printer should automatically power back up. If it doesn't, turn it on with the power button.
    7. Try making a photocopy (if your printer is an all-in-on printer) before connecting any other cables to the printer.
    8. Connect any other needed cables to the printer.
Please continue here: Vertical Bands, Lines, or Streaks in Copies, Faxes, or Scans, complete the steps listed, make sure the scanner lid is fully down when powering on, do not lift the lid until the printer is fully initialzied.
If after the troubleshooting has been done the copy quality has not improved, contact our technical support at 800-474-6836 as it may be the hardware and you would still be in warranty. If you live outside the US/Canada Region, please click the link below to get the support number for your region.

  • Efax for officejet 5740

how do I set up the fax to use efax?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi @billharlan
Welcome to the HP Support Forums. I see that you would like to learn how to setup your Officejet 5740 printer so any eFaxes your receive are printed.
I am presuming that you have connected your printer to your wireless network or it is connected by an ethernet cable to your router so the printer has internet access. I am also presuming that you have already subscribed to eFax.
To have your eFaxes print out on the printer, you need to set up the ePrint feature of the printer. Please start by Getting the Printer Claim Code. You can use the printer’s default ePrint email address to enter into your eFax account for an email address to receive the faxes too. If you would like you can Customize the Email Address for HP ePrint.

    Welcome to the forums maurivik
I saw your post about how when you send a fax, the received fax is showing lines through it. I would suggest trying the troubleshooting guide below for this issue to hopefully have it corrected.

  • Can't get Officejet 5740 to connect wirelessly - VPN?

I have successfully connected my Officejet 5740 to my home wireless network, and the printer shows as connected. However, when I go to connect the computer to the printer, it tells me it cannot find the IP address. Is the issue that my computer is using my corporate VPN? Is there any way around this? I have to connect this computer to the VPN for connectivity per company policy. What are my options?

  • HP Officejet 5740 Scan Noise

My brand-new HP Officejet 5740 (which has the latest firmware) seems rather grumbly/rumbly when it scans.  It's not very smooth-sounding.  Copying, however, has a less loud grumbly/rumbly sound.
5740 owners/users/HP employees: I know sound is subjective, but is this normal?  I don't scan that often and could get used to the sound if that is a "normal" sound, but if it is an indicator of something being wrong...
(Note: I have also recently been using a HP Officejet 6830, and it is much quieter/smoother-sounding when scanning.)

    Hey @HPPrinterUser10,
Thanks for posting in the HP Support Forum.
I understand that you're finding your HP Officejet 5740 e-All-in-One Printer to be loud when it scans.  I would like to assist you with this.
Is your printer situated on a flat, stable, 'wobble-free' table or desk?  Sometimes printer location can contribute to the overall audio output of regular printer functions.
I do have access to both of the printers you're referring to and was able to test scan from each.  The sound quality and volume output seemed pretty close between the two units.  If I am interpreting the 'Acoustics' specifications presented in each model's datasheet correctly, the 5740 is rated to be slightly louder.  Click here and here for reference.
In your setup, I would only be concerned if the printer's emitting a squealing sound or grinding sound, as this would indicate a potential hardware issue.
So, to answer your question more directly, I wouldn't be overly concerned about the sound of your 5740 scanning unless it intensifies or if it's concurrent with a decrease in functionality.
I hope this helps.  Let me know if you have any further questions or run into any issues - I'm always happy to assist.
    Have a great day!

Hello @kbcga Welcome to the HP Forums
I read your post about your Officejet 5740 not connecting. As you mentioned that you have tried to change router settings, the printer may not be connecting to the network. • Officejet 5740 from mac OS 10.5.8

I just purchased an Officejet 5740.  I set it up as a network printer using  a Windows 7 laptop.  I have been able to print from the laptop and from a Windows 7 desktop but I have not been able to find a driver to install the printer to my wife's MAC laptop.  The MAC is running OS 10.5.8.  I have updated the MAC OS but cannot find a driver for this printer.  Is the driver available? If there is not a driver for this printer is there another driver that would at least allow printing from thr MAC is not copying or scanning?

    Hi @Ed_S,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand that you are looking for a driver for your HP Officejet 5740 for your Mac OS X 10.5.8 computer. I am happy to look into this for you!
According to your printer's specifications found at this website, Printer Specifications for the HP ENVY 5640, 5660, 7640, and Officejet 5740 and 8040 e-All-in-One Pr.... The minimum system requirements for Mac are:
    OS X v10.10 Yosemite
    OS X v10.9 Mavericks
    OS X v10.8 Mountain Lion
    OS X v10.7 Lion
So I am sorry to say there does not appear to be any drivers available for this printer on Mac OS X 10.5.8.
The best options are to either upgrade the Operating System to Mac OS X 10.7. (If your hardware allows it). Or to upgrade the printer to one that has drivers available for Mac OS X 10.5.8.
Hope this information clears things up, and have a good day!

  • Handoff: iPhone keeps ringing even though call picked up in Macbook

I have configured Handoff in my MacBook Pro and my iPhone 5S. When an incoming call attempts to get in, MacBook Pro and iPhone start both ringing, I try to answer in my iPhone but buttons don't obey my finger touches, the phone just keeps frozen and ringing and ringing. Then I'm forced to answer in MacBook Pro, but iPhone is unaware I've already picked up the call in MacBook Pro and keeps ringing.
Other times, the same situation occurs except that I CAN answer in iPhone but MacBook Pro keeps ringing and ringing even though I've already picked up the call in my iPhone.
Other times, the MacBook Pro is not even aware of an incoming call, but iPhone do.
What configuration is missing here??? My devices hate each other or they hate me both.
I don't know where exactly must I post this question, iPhone issues or Mac OS X issues. So I'll post it twice.
    I appreciate your help.

I've been having this same issue. It actually first occurred for me about 2 months ago. I hate it. I've missed some important calls because of it. APPLE - PLEASE GET TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS ISSUE!!!!

    Welcome to the forums!
    @HP-OJ-5740-ARGH
I understand your HP Officejet 5740 is not functioning properly, and I'd like to try to help!
As I read your post, you mentioned that test pages will not print, which is first concerning as this points out a hardware problem. The hardware issue will need to be dealt with first and resolved before any software troubleshooting can be done.
I would suggest a power reset to start with and then try making a couple of copies after the printer starts back up.
Press the Power button to turn on the product.
With the product turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
    Wait at least 15 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button to turn it on.
Please let me know if the copies work and we will go from there

  • Skype's latest build on Android keeps ringing afte...

    Hello,
I'm having trouble with Skype mobile's latest build on my Android phone (Garmin-asus Nuvifone a50 with Android 2.1-update1, latest version available for that phone)
I downloaded the latest skype update yesterday (Sept. 29, 2011), it says it's version 33882220.
Since then, whenever I receive a call, once I pick it up, the phone keeps ringing and vibrating, and I can't get out of the call window, even if I hit the hang up button. The phone keeps ringing until I disconnect Skype or kill the app within Android.
Same problem when I try to call someone, the person picks up, but the phone keeps ringing, even though I am speaking with the person I'm calling. Here too, if I hang up, I effectively close the communication, but the phone keeps ringing and does not close the communication window. Only disconnecting or killing the app solves the constant ringing.
Edit: I forgot to mention, I tried to reboot my phone, but it did not solve the problem. The I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Skype, but it did not solve the problem (although I did not reboot the phone after uninstalling...)
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thank you in advance.

    I have a problem with my E72.
The phone keeps ringing in the display for about 20-30 sec after I have pressed the answer button. The phone call gets connected but not in the display. I also have the bluetooth headset BT-215 with vibration and that also vibrates during this period but I can speak and hear as normal.
Does anybody have a solution for this problem?
I´ve tried the do a hard reset and upgraded the firmware but it doesn´t work any better.

I got the issue solved - I turned all devices off, then on again. Turned FaceTime off (then on) on all devices. FaceTime and call sync working great.
