Fax stop working

I have the HP Photosmart C6180 All in one copier. The fax machine was working fine, then one day it started saying nothing could go through. I have the disc to reinstall, but the error that Vista cannot work w/ the CD came up.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

I thought I already replied to this message. Anyway, you don't have to uninstall and re-install the software/driver if you are trying to send a fax through the front panel. Faxing and Copying are stand-alone features. Run the fax test first and check . Press setup> Tools> run fax test.  The fax test will indicate the problem. There are times like you just have to unplug the phone cord from the phone jack and leave it unplug for 3 mins to remove static on the line. (There are times there is a dsl filter that may be faulty) Turn on the error report by pressing the setup button> print report> and error report on send/receive (something to that effect). try sending again and if it fails, it willo give you an error report log. Below is the link where you can check on what the error codes meant and what kind of setup you have for this unit.
Goodluck!

  • Laser Jet M1217nfwMFP wireless and fax stopped working printer works with usb cord

I have an HP computer 64 bit version.  The printer suddenly stopped working wireless, fax stopped working weeks ago.  Printer does work with a usb cord.  Turning it off (removing elec cord) on both computer and printer, didn't help.  Nothing changed that was different to cause either problem.

    Hi agueda
I see that your Laserjet M1217 wireless and fax stopped working but the usb connection does work.
I would restore the printers defaults to setup the wireless again.
Touch the setup (wrench button) on the printer, select network config, select restore defaults.
Then make sure the wireless radio is turned on.
Touch the setup button (wrench), network configuration, wireless menu, wireless radio-on.
Temporarily connect the usb cable from the printer to the computer and go to start, all programs, hp, laserjet m1217 and select wireless configuration and go through the wizard to reset up the wireless again.
or if your router has a wps button on it then you touch the wps wireless button on the printer and immediately touch the wps button on the router.
Printer should automatically connect to the wireless network.
    Run the add printer wizard.
Go to control panel,(win7) devices and printers then click add a printer, next, select network
highlight printer, next, message installing printer.
Should be able to print over  wireless again.
    Check  fax connections.
    Then run a fax test.
Touch the setup (wrench button) on the printer, service, run fax test.
    You should have 4 passes.
Change these fax settings on the printer.
private receive-wrench/fax setup menu/ok/fax receive setup/ok/private receive/ok/set it to off
    error correction-wrench/arrow to fax setup/ok/all faxes/error correction/ok/set it to off/ok
    speed-wrench/arrow to fax setup/ok/all faxes/ok/fax speed/ok//change speed to medium.
clear saved faxes-wrench/fax functions menu/clear saved faxes/ok/ok to clear.
Try sending and receiving a fax.

  • Fax suddenly stopped working

I was sending and receiving faxes with no problem connected to a regular phone line. Then suddenly, it stopped working.
When I go to fax, the internal modem comes up, but it doesn't take any orders. There are no jobs faxing in the active jobs window.
Anybody have any ideas why this may have happened?
    Thanks

You are welcome.  So is the only problem you are having is that no dial tone can be heard from the phone's headset when the phone is connected to the printer?  Everything else works fine, there are no problems with faxing and everything passes on the Fax Test.  Is that correct?
Separate the phone from the phone cord if possible and the phone's phone cord from the printer.  Disconnect the printer's phone cord on both ends.  Try doing a Hard Reset as described in the following link.  Click Here
Be sure to use a 2 wire phone cord between the printer and wall jack and use 1Line on the printer.  After putting everything back together, is there any change?
If not, can you try different phone cords?
Also, remember a click on the Kudos star to the left is a quick "Thanks" for a helpful post.

  • PC Suite stops Microsoft Fax from working

The fax server information cannot be retrieved
I have just downloaded and installed the latest version of PC Suite.
Each time I install the recent versions of PC Suite it stops Microsoft fax from working.
I am running windows XP SP2
    I have a Nokia 5310
    The error message is:
The fax server information cannot be retrieved
The fax wizard will now close.
I can use an earlier version of PC Suite but then my phone is not fully supported.
    Any ideas?

Thanks for your response Miksu. You have pointed me to the right place. It is the connection manager that fails to recognise the BT stack that causes my problems. This is always resolved by a repair. It seems that the order of initiation is very important which may be why Luist has started to have the problem.
In my experience, once things stop to work, I've had to strip out any subsequent installs.
My PCSuite also stopped working after it installed cable connection manager (or something like that) without me asking. I found it in Control Panel->Add/Remove programs. I removed it and PC Suite started to work again, so I completely removed PC Suite then re-installed, and allowed it to add the relevant devices relating to my phone (about 4 devices alltogether) but alas this did not solve my "return from standby" issue. I think I need to remove PC Suite and then Bluetooth, and maybe something else before re-installing - I'll leave that for a rainy day.
    Thanks again Miksu

  • Fax server dialing rule stop working

    Hi all,
Our shard fax server stop working for unknown reason. All fax will become Pending. However, if I enter the number manually(91xxxxxxx), the fax working as normal. If using the format(+1 (xxx) xxxxxxx) as usual, it goes to pending. It looks
like dialing rule not apply anymore. I check the dialing rules, and they are still there. Anyone know how to fix it or what case it? Thank you very much.
We use 2008 R2 Standard, and USR USB fax modem.

    Hi,
Maybe it is caused by the format of the rule is incorrect. Please try to refer to the following thread and article to see if it helps.

  • Hp c7280 all in one printer fax option stopped working

My fax option worked until yesterday afternoon.  Now I have a fax text report and it tells me that I  am not using the correct type of phone cord.  It has always worked with the phone cord I have plugged in before.  Is there a certain phone cord I should be using and if so where can I get one?

    Hi there,

  • Adobe [program name] CS3 has stopped working....

I am attempting to run programs from the Adobe CS3 suite on my laptop, which runs with Windows Vista. My Adobe CS3 programs all show the "Adobe [program name] CS3 has stopped working" message, followed by a brief attempt to fix the problem by windows. Until this morning, the programs had been running without incident for several months.
Does problem sound familiar? What can be done to solve it?

Lots of things are known to cause issues with the CS3 installer, including besides the obvious antivirus and spyware scanners and firewalls things like iTunes, instant messengers, browser helper toolbars like the Google Toolbar, and previous versions of the Flash player, which I would have thought would be removed by the clean script, but there is a tool here: http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157&sliceId=2
Also, be sure jscript.dll is properly registered. It won't hurt to do that again. Click Start > Run and type regsvr32 jscript.dll with the space, but without the quotes, and hit enter. You should see a dialog saying it was successful.
Click Start > Run and type MSconfig and hit enter. Disable all non-essential services and all non-essential items in the startup items, particularly anything to do with Anti-virus, spyware protection or third party firewalls, and then reboot. You can hide all Microsoft service in the services tab of MSconfig to make it easier, and most of whats left will be non-essential, though if anything looks like it has to do with your DVD drive or your mouse youll want to leave it checked. Its probably safe to turn off everything in the Startup tab, but again, if you recognize a mouse driver, leave it on. MSconfig will run as soon as you restart the computer and if everything seems OK, just cancel for the moment.
Be sure the Windows firewall is disabled. Third-party firewalls should have been disabled in Msconfig. Other things that should be disabled include any instant messenger, iTunes, and Google toolbars or similar from other vendors if you run them.
Be sure Java is enabled in the browser, and that you have a default printer (LOCAL - can be fax viewer if necessary) online.
After the installer runs, reboot, and when MSconfig starts change it back to "Normal Startup" and reboot again.

  • HP PSC1210 connected to express stopped working on PC

    Hi,
It looks like many people have had the same problem I have - my HP PSC 1210 all in one printer has just stopped working when connected to my airport express. The PC is connected to a Netgear WGR614 v4 wireless router, and the Airport Express is across the room. This setup worked flawlessly for atleast a month.
I tried every suggestion posted to this list to get it working including:
    - unlug Airport Express, turn printer off, turn printer on, plug in express
    - deleting and reinstalling printer
    - the efelix site
    - resetting the airpost express, deleting and reinstalling software
    - Distribute IP addresses in Airport Admin is unchecked
Still, every time I print to the HP printer connected to the Airport Express from my desktop or laptops, I get an "Error - Printing" message in the print Queue, and my computer slows way down. I can not delete the print job unless I stop the Print Spooler service and start it again.
Could someone please help me get my printer printing again?
By the way, Airport Admin does recognize the printer.
    Thank you very much,
    John

Thanks very much. Bonjour for Windows worked (at least for now). I had to search my hard drive for the drivers, so I chose the first .inf file that started with hp (after autorun.ini) out of the list of those installed with my HP printer in C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Digital Imaging\long string of numbers.
That seemed to work. I did get a message saying "argument is invalid" but the remote printer appeared in my printers and faxes list anyway. I printed a page successfully.
    Hope this helps other people.

  • Audigy 2 Value left channel stopped working *complete

    Sony Vaio pcv-rs530
    P4 3.2 Ghz
    Gb Ram
    All-In-Wonder ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 28mb
Windows XP Home Edition v02' Service Pack 2
    Logitech Z-5300e 5. Speaker system
I've had my audigy 2 value for about two months now. I managed to install it after a huge adventure of wiping my c: dri've after my first failed installation which ended me with no sound and no hope of restoring it back to normal, except the wipe, of course. It worked for a while, two months, but then I was having issues with my video card, possibly due to overheating because my audigy 2 value was one empty slot away from it and the circulation of air was not enough to keep it cool.
I stopped getting video related crashes after I put my sound card to the last slot, effecti'vely taking out my fax/modem, which I never used in the first place, in order to put the audigy 2 in the last slot, farthest away from my ATI AIW Radeon 9800 Pro. That little modem was blocking the last slot, making it impossible to put my sound card there. Then I noticed a few days later that my front left speaker was not working. I switched the speakers around, and everything worked except for the speaker plugged into the green line ouput, more specifically, the left front speaker never worked.
I'm currently using Logitech's z-5300e 5. speakers system, and they worked fine up until recently where the front left channel will not work. I tested it out on my xbox, and the speakers work fine. Both left and right speakers were okay. I took out my old desktop speakers that came with my vaio and plugged it into the green line output, and even then the left speaker didn't work. The same thing happened when I plugged my headphones in. The left earphone never worked. Both the old and new speakers and the headphones work properly otherwise (when not plugged into the audigy 2). I'm thinking my line output left channel has stopped working on the sound card itself.
I noticed that if I pushed the speaker plug into the outlet halfway, the front left speaker worked, but when I tested the calibration -- the voice matching said "front right" through the front left speaker. Even with all the speakers connected in any configuration, there was never a mention of a "front left" speaker. I concluded that the front left channel on the audigy 2 has stopped working.
Is this assumption correct? If so, wow. How would I go about fixing this? Does it have something to do with the slot switching? I reinstalled the drivers and programs for the audigy 2 after I switched. Although it did not seem to have a problem with me switching the slots even when I didn't uninstall anything. It detected the hardware switch, and everything worked fine. Should I try switching back to the other slot and hope my video card doesn't become one with my motherboard? The warranty has expired on my audigy 2 value, and I don't think I'll be compensated if I have no warranty, correct? All the drivers are updated, and it <EM>has</EM> worked before.
I've heard of other people's audigy 2 values that have had other channels just fizzle out in a few months. Am I one of them? Any information would be really helpful! Thanks.Message Edited by Paulie on 05-2-2005 06:30 AM

If you're sure noone was funny and turned down the left channel in advanced tab of Surround Mixer for instance, perhaps the connector loosened on the board or the soldering went bad; since your warranty expired (check with the store first!) I'd have someone who knows his way with electronics and soldering irons have a look at it.
PS I have the Audigy 2 Value as well; so far it works good but had I known it was treated like the ugly little kid in the Creative family that noone really likes to deal with i'd have gotten the ZS.Message Edited by Marco on 05-2-2005 0:2 PM

Every now and then ALL input devices stop working, ths is not temporary - a forced shut down is needed
What happens is that I am happily working away when suddenly all input devices stop working with no warning, so the light goes off on my Wacom (Intuous 3) tablet, the keyboard and the apple trackpad  are not responded to i.e. the cursor stays where it was on the screen prevously and I am left with the only option to restart by holding down the power button

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. This procedure is a diagnostic  test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything suggested in this comment.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed, as well as some other aspects of the configuration that may be related to the problem.
Don’t be alarmed by the seeming complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out. Here's a brief summary: In each of two steps, you copy a line of text from this web page into a window in another application. You wait about a minute. Then you paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is copy; paste; paste again. That's all there is to it. Details follow.
You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken while booted in “normal” mode. If the system is now running in safe mode and is bootable in normal mode, reboot as usual.
Below are instructions to enter UNIX shell commands. They do nothing but produce human-readable output. However, you need to think carefully before running any program at the behest of a stranger on a public message board. If you question the safety of the procedure suggested here — which you should — search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them.
The commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. Step 1 should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    PB=/usr/libexec/PlistBuddy; PR () { [[ "$o" ]] && printf '\n%s:\n%s\n' "$1" "$o"; }; PF () { o=$($PB -c Print "$2" | awk -F'= ' \/$3'/{print $2}'); PR "$1"; }; PN () { [[ $o -eq 0 ]] || printf "\n%s: %s\n" "$1" $o; };{ system_profiler SPSoftwareDataType | sed '8!d;s/^ *//'; o=$(system_profiler SPDiagnosticsDataType | sed '5,6!d'); fgrep -q P <<< "$o" && o=; PR "POST"; o=$(( $(vm_stat | awk '/Pageo/{sub("\\.",""); print $2}')/256 )); [[ $o -gt 1024 ]] && printf "\nPageouts: %s MiB\n" $o; o=$(kextstat -kl | grep -v com\\.apple | cut -c53- | cut -d\< -f1); PR "Loaded extrinsic kernel extensions"; o=$(launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)|\.[0-9]+$/{print $3}'); PR "Loaded extrinsic user agents"; o=$(launchctl getenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES); PR "Inserted libraries"; o=$(crontab -l); PR "User cron tasks"; o=$(cat /e*/lau*); PR "Global launchd configuration"; o=$(cat ~/.lau*); PR "Per-user launchd configuration"; PF "Global login items" /L*/P*/loginw* Path; PF "Per-user login items" L*/P*/*loginit* Name; PF "Safari extensions" L*/Saf*/*/E*.plist Bundle | sed 's/\..*$//;s/-[1-9]$//'; o=$(find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 \) | wc -l); PN "Restricted user files"; cd; o=$(find -L /S*/L*/E* {,/}L*/{A*d,Compon,Ex,In,Keyb,Mail/Bu,P*P,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo}* -type d -name Contents -prune | while read d; do ID=$($PB -c 'Print :CFBundleIdentifier' "$d/Info.plist"); ID=${ID:-No bundle ID}; egrep -qv "^com\.apple\.[^x]|Accusys|ArcMSR|ATTO|HDPro|HighPoint|driver\.stex|hp-fax|JMicron|microsoft\.MDI|print|SoftRAID" <<< $ID && printf '%s\n\t(%s)\n' "${d%/Contents}" "$ID"; done); PR "Extrinsic loadable bundles"; o=$(find /u*/{,*/}lib -type f -exec sh -c 'file -b "$1" | grep -qw shared && ! codesign -v "$1"' {} {} \; -print); PR "Unsigned shared libraries"; o=$(system_profiler SPFontsDataType | egrep "Valid: N|Duplicate: Y" | wc -l); PN "Font problems"; for d in {,/}L*/{La,Priv,Sta}*; do o=$(ls -A "$d"); PR "$d"; done; } 2> /dev/null | pbcopy; echo $'\nStep 1 done'
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
The command may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. Wait for the line "Step 1 done" to appear below what you entered. The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. Paste into a reply to this message. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
Remember that you must be logged in as an administrator for this step. Do as in Step 1 with this line:
    PR () { [[ "$o" ]] && printf '\n%s:\n%s\n' "$1" "$o"; }; { o=$(sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|calendarse|cups|dove|isc|ntp|post[fg]|x)/{print $3}'); PR "Loaded extrinsic daemons"; o=$(sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook); PR "Login hook"; o=$(sudo crontab -l); PR "Root cron tasks"; o=$(syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail -n25 | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}'); PR "Log check"; } 2>&- | pbcopy; echo $'\nStep 2 done'
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: Step 2 might not produce any output, in which case the Clipboard will be empty.
    You can then quit Terminal.
To prevent confusion, I'll repeat: When you type your password in the Terminal window, you won't see what you're typing.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, set one before taking Step 2. If that’s not possible, skip the step.
Important: If any personal information, such as your name or email address, appears in the output of these commands, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
Remember, Steps 1 and 2 are all copy-and-paste — type only your password. Also remember to post the output.

  • Photosmart C7200 stopped working

My HP Photosmart C7200 has stopped working over the wireless.  I can plug it into the laptop and it will print, but not over wireless.  When I run the wireless network test report I get PASS for Radio On, Radio Working, Ethernet Cable Not Plugged In, Network Name (SSID) Found, Security and Printer Settings Consistent with Wireless Router Settings.
It FAILS on 'No Filtering' and says to check if MAC address filtering is being used.  I've confirmed that it is not.  I've tried running the setup wizard again but it still fails.  Help!
My router is a Linksys Wireless-N Broadband Router.  I'm running WPA-Personal security and TKIP encryption method.
My laptop is a Dell studio, only about a year or so old.
I've made no changes to the router or printer, not installed any recent new software on the laptop and have no clue why it doesn't work anymore.  Any help is appreciated.  Thanks!

Finally got it working again today after hours of randomly trying things.  Still no clue why it stopped working.
But here's everything I did to get it working:
    1. Reconnect the printer to "fix" the filtering issue.  But the computer still didn't recognize the printer.
    2. Download and run the diagnostics from HP.  It didn't work.  It ran, tried to fix it then rebooted my laptop.  When it came back I had no printer listed in 'devices and printers' - although I still had an icon for a HP Photosmart C2700 series fax (tried it, it didn't print anything) - and the software didn't run again after the reboot.  Was this supposed to be the fix?
    3.  Ran the diagnostic software, but it didn't list a printer to fix in the dialogue box.  So dead end here.
    4. Went back to the HP download page.  Tried running both the HP driver and the HP Software for this printer - figuring I had to reinstall something to get the printer icon back.  Neither ran after the download or appeared to do anything at all.
    5. Went back to the HP download page and instead of running the file, saved it on my desktop.  THEN I ran the .exe file from the desktop.  Finally got the installation window.  It went through the installation process and seemed to complete, then looped and starting running again.  After 30 minutes or so, it was still running (appeared to be frozen) so I tried printing an excel sheet and it worked!  So then I tried to cancel the installation software, but there was no 'cancel' button.  I shutdown the laptop to get it to stop running...had to force software to end in the shutdown process.
    6.  With fingers crossed, I started the laptop, opened an excel file...and...it printed right away.
I'm hoping it's fixed for good (fingers crossed it doesn't happen again).  Nothing worked the way it was advertised and I just had to keep guessing and trying different things to try to get it to work.  But at least I'm happy - and wireless again.

    Hi katevancolen!
So that the Community can help you better, we will need to know the Computer Operating System you're using (Windows XP/Vista/7/8 or Mac 10.x), and how you're connecting to your device (USB, Wi-Fi, or ethernet). Any other details you'd like to give will only help the Community better understand your issue! Thanks and have a great day!

  • Clicks stop working after opening iPhoto or App Store

Everything works fine until I open iPhoto or the App Store (could happen with other apps, but these two for sure) then "clicks" stop working, My cursor moves and some items highlight, but nothing will "click"... I can't select photos, can't click on Download button, can't click to All Events, etc. Tasks can be accomplished with keyboard shortcuts. In App Store, I can't even highlight to try to click. Once these apps are opened, mouse clicks no longer work in other apps.
I've tried switching from Magic Trackpad to a Logitech Nano mouse; same thing happens.
Using Mac Pro & Mavericks. Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a couple of minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking  anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter
    exec bash
in the window and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know your password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report your results. No harm will be done.
    8. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If it happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • My Canon Pixma iP8500 printer has stopped working with Mavericks

Hi, my Canon Pixma iP8500 printer has stopped working in the past few days and I made no alterations that could explain why this might happen. I am using OS X 10.9.5 Mavericks on a Mac Pro desktop computer. I can print a test page when selecting it on my Canon Printer Utility from my desktop so it seems that there is contact between the computer and the printer but it will not print from iPhoto, Preview or Mail. When I select Print from any of these nothing happens and there is nothing on the Print List. I have checked the Printers & Scanners in my System Preferences and my Canon iP8500 is listed and highlighted as  Idle Default and Share this printer is ticked. I have tried deleting this printer then adding it but it still will not print. I would appreciate any helpful suggestions bearing in mind that I am fairly elderly and have a limited knowledge of IT and some of the terminology.
    Thank you,
    Colin.

    Hi, might try this...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions.
Any devices that previously appeared in your Printer List and Fax List will need to be added again after resetting the printing system.
Resetting the printing system in Mac OS X 10.5.x+++
        1.    To use the Reset Printing System feature in Mac OS X 10.5.x, follow these steps:
        2.    Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu.
        3.    Choose Print & Fax from the View menu.
        4.    Control-click on list of printers on the left side of the window, then choose "Reset printing system" from the contextual menu. If you don't see a list of printers, Control-click on the text "Click + to add a printer or fax" and select "Reset printing system..."

As an alternative, if you currently have one or more printers listed, you can Option-click the "-" (Remove printer) button.

    Reboot.
