Fax won't get a dial-tone

Printing to the fax used to work fine. I have sent many faxes. I'm not sure if 10.5.6 broke it or what but the fax won't even get a dial tone now. I have tried two different phone cables and the phone line works, I have a splitter on it and I can hear the dial tone when using the handset. I just downloaded the PageSender Fax software and it doesn't get a dial tone either. I have deleted and re-added the fax in the Printer & Fax system preferences but that didn't help.
I tried setting the preference for not waiting for a dial tone but that doesn't work either.
Are there known problems with the fax modem on 10.5.6?
Any ideas?
Thanks,
David.

Good suggestion, but they look correct.

  • Getting the dial tone on my landline using a DECT ...

This issue has been ongoing since April 2012. If I use my Panasonic DECT phone (bought in 2006) to make or receive a call, the BB connection drops within 5 secs (Home Hub 2.0).  I had a Voyager 220V for 6 years working alongside this DECT phone and all was well.
I had to call BT Faults in April because suddenly my BB service kept dropping out up to 6 times every half hour. (unrelated to the phone at that stage).  BT Faults Level 1 (India) said the Voyager needed had come to the end of it's life and needed replacing with a Home Hub 2.0.  They also said there was a software issue at their end & it would be sorted within 24 hours!!!.  The replacement Hub worked with my DECT phone for less than a week before I noticed whenever I made or received a call the BB dropped out after 10 seconds.
I called BT Faults about the issue of BB dropping out when the phone was used, but it went on for weeks with BT not getting to the nub of the problem.  They did their usual tests and in July they sent an engineer who swapped the hub over, ripped out the existing ADSL box, put in a new SSFB box (no filters required), tested and all was well for..... 10 days.  Then the old problem returned. I checked with my phone company about compatibility issues, but they were unable to help. (after all the phone had worked for 6 years alongside the old router).
I wrote to BT complaints and in Aug 2012, they sent yet another engineer who this time ripped out the existing internal cabling just outside the front door of the property (star wiring) and put a direct line in from outside, telling me that this should rectify the problem!!!   Another Home Hub 2.0 was tested and appeared to work compatibly with my DECT phone. Within 3weeks the old problem had come back.  BB drops whenever I get a dial tone or receive a call.
I've tried swapping over locations for the Hub and phone (at least 5' away from each other), swapped over power sockets, isolated all electrical devices using the same power socket, connected the Hub and the phone only to a different power socket. I'm fast running out of options.  BT Level 2 Faults will call me on Mon 24 if nothing has changed they want to send another engineer who this time will charge £110 no doubt & they still can't get to the bottom of the issue.
If you've been through something similar and can offer suggestions, anyone please?
    Wits end!

  • Faxing - Modem Does Not Detect Dial Tone

    Hello Everyone,
I suddenly have a need to send and receive a Fax. I have a phone line plugged into the modem port on my G4 and on trying to send a text fax, not much happens. Error message to the effect that the modem is not detecting a dial tone. Same cable that works fine on the phone itself.
Can someone either help with an answer or direct me to a page with more detailed instructions than the "Help" file is providing?
    John

I have the same problem. I thought I would begin to use my several years old Powerbook to send a simple fax. As it is I have to use my old G3 to fax. Even with Faxstf pro on I still can't get it to work. Fax STF says that the modem is only set to receive and I just cannot change it in the settings. I've trashed the preferences and the program. I am at a loss after having spent a day trying to figure this out. I am on a dedicated phone line that works just fine. I would really like to just simply fax from my powerbook G4. The modem is as follows:
    Modem Model: LastDash
    Interface Type: USB
    Modulation: V.92
    SKU Name: UCJ
    Hardware Version: 4.0
    Firmware Version: APPLE VERSION 2.6.6
    Driver: InternalUSBModem.kext (v2.6.6)

  • Why can't I get a dial tone or hear messages?

My LG  phone worked just fine a few hours ago.  Then, all of the sudden, I cannot pick up incoming calls or make outgoing ones - even to 611!
I have a strong enough connection (+ bars)
I can send & receive texts
I can hear the phone ring, but it disconnects when I try to answer.
When I try calling out, I can't hear ringing from my end, and the connection never goes through on the other end
I'm sending this via internet because I can't connect by dialing 611.
Can a tech support person help?

Are you in a Verizon Wireless service area or a partner area?  Have you dialed *228, option 1 to reprogram the phone to the Verizon Wireless network?

  • Canon PIXMA MX850 fax and FiOS - "No Dial Tone"

I have a new multi-function printer and FiOS Internet, Phone and TV. My old analog phones work just fine and get a dial tone through all the phone jacks, but the fax doesn't recognize the dial tone. I've read about micro-filter and splitting devices for DSL connections; will they help with my problem?
    Hope someone has advice!
    Thanks!

On your vioce phones, do you get a dial tone the exact second you pick up the phone, or is there a delay, like a incoming voicemail msg that needs to be listened to?  I'm willing to bet that your phone system tells you you have unheard voicemail messages by adding a delay before voicemail, and that will affect your fax machine.  Clear your voicemail and try again.

  • Satellite L20: Modem doesn't get dial tone

    Hi,
My L20 notebook doesn't get a dial tone whem I'm trying to dial up. On antoher pc the connection works well, so I'm sure that the line has a dial tone and that the other computer is 'listening'.
I also tried to uncheck the 'wait before dial tone' option, tried to remove it from the Device manager, but after this all the modem still doesn't work. The current driver that is installed is version 7.20.00.00, because I can't install the latest version (7.25.00.00) (setup doesn't finish well, no specific error is given).
Does anybody knows what to do??

Open the system control panel and choose the Phone and modem options.
There check the Modems tab. The modem should be placed in the list.
If not, so you need to install the modem driver.
Check the Modem function by pressing the "Query Modem" button.
If the Modem Information window contain a list of AT commands (including ATI2, ATI3, ATI4 etc.), then the modem is correctly installed. The ATI5 command ends in with the number for the selected Regional settings (for example Germany = 06).
To change the Regional Setting please use the Toshiba Internal Modem Region Select Utility.

  • My fax won't transmit

I have a Mx439 all in one and I thought I set the fax up right but it will not transmit. I get a dial tone and it calls the number I am trying to fax to and once the other fax machine picks up and makes all of its noises my fax doesn't connect to it to transmit. I have slowed my speed all the way down and it still won't transmit. I have no clue how to fix this problem.

    HI kashsmommy08,
If your phone connection is through the Internet, then your internet provider may not allow for faxing.  Some internet providers charge extra for faxing services so I would recommend checking with them to ensure that your line supports faxes.
Since you have already lowered the TX Speed as far as it can go, I would also suggest disabling ECM.  ECM stands for Error Correction Mode and turning this off may allow your faxes to go through.  Please perform the following to turn of ECM TX:
     1.  Press the Setup button.
     2.  Use the < or > button to select Device settings, then press OK.
     3.  Use the < or > button to select Fax settings, then press OK.
     4.  Use the < or > button to select Adv. FAX settings, then press OK.
     5.  Use the < or > button to select Adv. communication settings, then press OK.
     6.  Use the < or > button to select ECM TX, then press OK.
     7.  Use the < or > button to select Off, then press OK.
     8.  Press Stop/Reset to return to standby mode.
    I hope this helps.

  • Fax won't work

    Hi,
just had to replace my officejet pro 8600 less than 6mths old because it decided to not turn on, replaced it with  HP OFFICEJET PRO 8620 set itup as per instructions to a "T" fax was working fine for the first month now all of a sudden i cannot fax in or out everytime i try to run a fax test it comes up with a blue msg power 00709098 then promtly tells me to turn off printer as a result fax test fails. i have uninstalled all software re-installed it unplugged power cords etc tried different phone line tried both usb and wireless connections replaced power cords and usb cords. why is this happening ? and please dont tell me once again i have 'REPLACE"  my printer

    Hi @farmgrl_32 ,
I see that you are experiencing issues sending and receiving faxes. The fax test fails. I will certainly do my best to help you.
I would do a hard reset to see if that will resolve the issue.
Leave the printer on and unplug the power cable from the printer and wall outlet for 60 seconds.
Then reconnect the power cable to the printer and wall outlet rather than a surge protector.
This ensures the printer is receiving full power and may help this situation.
Try these steps in this document, to see if it will resolve the issue. Cannot Send or Receive Faxes.
Sorry for all the questions, but it will help to resolve this issue quicker if you still require assistance.
What type of connection do you have? (Analogue, DSL, Cable Modem)
    Are you using a filter?
Are you using the 2 wire fax cable?
Do you have distinctive ring set up on the line?
Is there any voice mail set up?
Do you have a answering machine? (Where is it connected to)
Where is the fax cable connected to? (modem, wall jack)
Is there a phone also connected the printer?
Do you get a dial tone from the wall outlet if you connect a phone to it?
Do you get a dial tone if you connect a phone to the printer?
    Have a great day!

  • 4630 dial tone detection fail

Getting a Dial Tone Detection fail on my 4630. The line has a dial tone through a phone. Anyone ever see this before?

    Hi @PTrietschChaney,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand that you are getting a dial tone detection fail with your HP Officejet 4630. I am happy to look into this issue for you!
For further assistance, I have a few questions for you:
Is your phone service analog or digital? Analog. Digital. What’s the Difference?
If the phone service is analog, please see this guide, Cannot Send or Receive Faxes. If the phone service is digital, then see this guide, How to connect your HP Fax Device to an ISDN, ADSL, PBX, or VoIP line. HP fax devices are designed to work with traditional analog phone services. They are not designed to work with digital phone services such as ADSL, PBX, ISDN, or VoIP. While HP fax products are not supported on these types of lines, they might work given appropriate setup and equipment.
For future reference, here is your printer's user guide.
    Hope this helps!

  • Secondary dial tone on UCM 8.6

Getting secondary dial tone after the second & third digits, pretty sure it has to do with the 911 route pattern, how can i fix this? Should i make it a translation pattern? Have checked all route patterns and all those have Provide Outside Dial tone checked.

This topic has been discussed plenty of times before, please search CSC for answers before posting.
The cause for this is overlapping in your dial plan, unless every single option after the first digit has the provide secondary dial tone (and that means, every single DN or pattern in your dial plan), you won't get it there. Look at overlapping in your dial plan and fix that overlapping to get it at the right time.

  • No dial tone, broadband still works

I cannot get a dial tone, but my broadband still works. If I disconnect the asdl filter and plug the phone into the main wall unit, I get a tone. I have changed the asdl filter and still cannot get a tone with the homehub connected. Any ideas on how to resolve this???

Your phone line must be OK as the phone works in the main socket, with no H.Hub connected. I would ring broadband faults on 08001114567 to report it.
edit    I don't think I would mention the storm.

  • Activation date almost passed, no dial tone or bro...

    Hi.
After waiting a month for an engineer appointment, I woke up this morning to a text from BT saying that it turns out I didnt need an engineer, my phone line and broadband were activated and I could start using them immediately. My order status on the site is completed as well.
This wasnt the case. I have been constantly checking all day, but I get no dial tone on the phone and the broadband light on my homehub is off. It isnt a problem with the ADSL filter, I still get no dial tone when plugging the phone directly into the master socket.
I'm kind of worried because I have already gone over a month without any internet, and I keep finding posts on forums of people having similar problems that have had to fight with phone support for weeks or months before getting it sorted.

Might be a stab in the dark, but is your new home "new" as in "new-build" new? Reason i ask is i had exactly the same thing occur to me when i moved into my new house, and after the call centre had assured me it was conneted, I unscrewed the faceplate from the phone socket next to the front door to find that Barrett Homes hadn't connected the phone sockets to the External NTE (i.e. the master socket) which is often outside nowadays.
Once connected, broadband worked fine (did it myself, 5 minute job) only problem was that Barretts had wired all the extension sockets with all six wires (huge no-no) which I also rectified (broadband sync went up from 3.5 meg to nearly 6); this isn't a one-off either as I have a friend on the other end of our road with exactly the same YTS wiring in their phone sockets. Hope you get your problem sorted anyways.

  • FXO not giving the dial tone

    Hi,
We have FXO ports on the router and SIP trunk towards ITSP. People used to dial into FXO and get the dial tone to callout using the SIP trunk. But after the upgrade of the IOS, this functionality has stopped. Now if you call the FXO, you get busy tone. The IOS has been upgraded from 12.4(11) to 15.1(M4) to basically its a big leap.
I strongly believe that we need to make some configuration to make it work like before.
    Please advise.

Here is the new feature complied in 15.X release
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/ios/15_1/release/notes/151-2TNEWF.html
    Toll Fraud Prevention
In Cisco IOS Release 15.1(2)T, the Toll Fraud Prevention feature is supported as below:
•Source  IP address authentication is enabled on incoming IPv4 H323/ or SIP  trunk calls. The source IP address of any incoming IPv4 H323 or SIP  trunk calls will be authenticated based on:
–Manually configured IP address trusted list.
–VoIP dial-peer session target (the state of a VoIP dial-peer must be in "Operation State = UP")
Incoming IPv4 H323 or SIP trunk calls will be rejected if the authentication fails and the default cause-code call-reject (21) disconnects the call.
Execute the show ip address trusted list command to  display IP address trusted data and a list of valid source IP  addresses. The default behavior can be disabled as shown in the example  below:
    voice service voip
    no ip address trusted authenticate
•Secondary  dial-tone is disabled for a call initiated from a FXO port. No  secondary dial-tone causes the outgoing call setup to fail if the called  number is NULL. The default behavior can be disabled as shown below:
    voice-port
    secondary dialtone
•Direct-inward-dial  is enabled to prevent the toll fraud for incoming ISDN calls. Two-stage  dialing is disabled for incoming ISDN calls by default. The incoming  called number will then be used for outgoing call setup. The default  behavior can be disabled as shown in the example below:
    voice service pots
    no direct-inward-dial isdn
