FCP getting wrong frame rate

I have clips that I'm converting to ProRes with Quicktime. They originate as H.264 files at 29.97 fps. Once converted they play fine in QT player which reports 29.97 fps, as does MediaInfo, but when I bring them into FCP it thinks they are 10 fps. What's going on!

Why? Because AVCHD is so cumbersome to deal with. Since the video is in H.264, "un-wrapping" it merely takes it out of the AVCHD file (converting the audio if necessary) and puts it in a format that can be dealt with at a file level rather than having to keep the BDVM structure. They can also be viewed natively on the Mac and cataloged in CatDV. Since no video conversion is taking place, the process is extremely quick, there is no generational loss, and the files do not balloon to unmanageable sizes. The original AVCHD packages are then archived to disc and I can keep un-wrapped versions near line to convert as needed. It is a much more elegant solution than having to go back to log and transfer every time you want to pull a clip out of AVCHD. The only rub is FCP thinking the clip is 10 fps when EVERY other video app sees it as 29.97!
As for the other questions, nobody TOLD me to do it that way, and while H.264 is often reffered to as a delivery codec, it this case it is the capture codec. And yes I have read the manual on log and transfer. As for what constitutes "proper", that is a matter of opinion to be discussed over a cup of tea. Right now I'm looking for a solution to a problem particular to FCP not a treatise on workflow.

  • How to get the frame rate of my application

    Hi again...
How can I get the frame rate of my application?
I also want the frame rate value to be the title of the frame, updated every second. How do I do that?
    thanks in advance...

To get the path where your application has been installed you have to do the following:
have a class called "what_ever" in the folder.
    then you do a litte:
    String path=
    what_ever.class.getRessource("what_ever.class").toString()
That get you a string like:
    file:/C:/Program Files/Cool_program/what_ever.class
Then you process the result a little to remove anything you don't want:
    path=path.substring(path.indexOf('/')+1),path.lastIndexOf('/'))
//Might be a little error here but you should find out //quickly if it's the case
And here you go, you have a nice
    C:/Program Files/Cool_program
which is the path to your application.
    Hooray

  • FCP interprting the wrong frame rate

    Hi
My client has delivered some footage using the DVCpro codac (not HD)
Quicktime reads the file correctly as 25fps but when I import the file into FCP, FCP shows it at 32fcp. Although the duration is correct it just shows black when it runs out of frames until it reaches the end.(too short)
I have tried to export a DV version using Qicktime but again FCP still reads it as 32 fps
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

QT and FCP, it seems, get their meta data info from different places. What I would do, and try this from both Quicktime Player and FCP, is export the clip and save it out at the same codec but specify that the frame rate should be 25. This may help clean the clip up without destroying the original.

  • Import mp4 h.264 from camcorder results in wrong frame rate

I have recently bought a PAL Samsung VP HMX20C camcorder that records 1080 50i or 1080 25p but when I import the video files into Final Cut Pro 6 the frame rate of the clips are 59.29 and 29.29 respectively. If these files are played with Quicktime or Mpeg Streamclip the info says that they are 50 fps and 25 fps. What do I need to do to get them to be recognised as PAL clips in FCP?
    Thanks in advance.

Many thanks for your replies Tom. Can you recommend the fastest way to convert these clips as I have tried the FCP Media Manager and it won't let me change the frame rate back to 25fps. I would like to know the quickest and easiest way to start editing with this media as the reason I bought this camcorder was to reduce the amount of time to ingest the footage as I was using DV PAL tapes before and had to ingest them in real time.

  • FCP giving off Frame rate to QT files

I dunno if anyone has ever come across this one but this is sure strange. K, I have been dealing with some 24p problems with cinema tools and it came to my attention from another person on here that, he told me to check my file by opening the captured file with quicktime and doing an info check and upon doing so we seen that the frame rate is said to be 29.95. Could be why cinema tools is acting a but strange not giving all the options wanted. So I decided to check other files and another 24p (2:3) was said to have a 28.51 frame rate. Although FCP reads it as 29.97, outside apps take the quicktime file and see it as is. So I even checked some ohers files that were shot in 30p and even they are buggered. Not all , but some. I just looked at a bunch of home videos that I have been bringing on with my 8mm and see some of the tapes and off a bit, I even have one clip saying 3.75 FPS, however, when playing the QT file, it plays fine and even the frame rate that shows when playing is 30 or so. So does anyone have an idea about this. I should say that all footage was captured with my camera connected to my FW400 port and saved usually to my internal drive. I did jsut do a test with saving to my external Lacie and same thing, just a bit off. NOW, interestingly enough, I was recommended a program for good logging and stuff and decided to try the trial version of it. Its called Live Capture Plus and I tried a bit of the 24p footage and opened it with QT and it says 29.97. Interesting, one thing different with this capture program is that it starts a new clip ever time break, much like iMovie which is a nice thing to have sometimes. So is it FCP or is it the fact that there is a time code malfunction during time breaks or what. I am open for anything hear. I have projects that need to get done and just want to make sure all is well. So please help, if you wish to ask in more detail, message or call me on ichat at littleharoldeh under AIM. Thanks guys
    Nat

No, they are not timecode breaks. As I stated these are fully captured files that play fine, however, when open in QT and info the frame rate is an odd, 29.95, or 29.91. I really have no clue why this is happening. Doesn't seem to effect over all playing of files. But the one thing I shot at 24p (2:3), which final cut read as 29.97, QT as 29.95, that I brought into Cinema tools, when I select reverse Telecine, it doesn't give me all the options for stuff that it should. I made a post about this in the Cinema tools thread. Thanks for trying, but it ain't timecode breaks

  • Any way to get .fla frame rate at runtime?

I would like to query at runtime to see what the frame rate
of the .swf is set to. Is there a way to do this? I saw in help
that you can access this for Camera, Netstream and Tween, but what
about for the .swf itself? Thanks to anyone who can help.

    arunbe,
    > Its not possible yaar !
    > You cant get it !
True, Flash does not currently provide a way to natively
    return the
framerate. But it can be derived mathematically. :)
    > If you are loading a swf pulished with 25 fps means,
    > it wil run in the current fps of the main file. So, you
    > cant find out that frame rate...
The SWF will run as close to the current framerate as it
    can. If the
user's computer can handle 25fps, it'll run at 25. If it can
    handle more
than than, the SWF will run at 25. If the user's computer can
    only handle
12, it will run at 12.
See this article for one approach.

  • When exporting QT from FCP, getting distorted frame size

When I export say a 720*486 movie using Export, QT conversion, I get a file that says it is 720*486 but in parenthesis it says its 853*480 and the image looks distorted. But, if i then bring it back into FCP it looks correct. Explanation and is there a setting so that you get proper frame size when you export? note: if I export using Export, Quicktime, i get the proper frame size.
    thanks

Can you describe the settings you're using for the QuickTime conversion?
When you Export to QuickTime (without conversion) you are creating a file that is set to your Sequence settings.

  • Is this a bug?: copied movie clip has wrong frame rate and ruins the main movie's sync

    Hello,
I am trying to copy a movieclip with a frame rate of 30 frames per second to a movie that has a frame rate of 30 frames per second. Both movies are actionscript 3 movies. When I do this, my copied movie clip's frame rate reverts to 12 frames per second and all my audio synched animation is trashed. Then when I change it back manually to 30 frames per second it makes my main movie's stage animation go crazy at full possible speed and the audio is all out of sync. I have not set export for sharing or action script on this movie clip. I've tried other movie clips that are 30 frames per second and it is all crazy!
Is this a bug? What can I do? I've got 100s of movie clips I need to make. I can't keep remaking them just because flash has a screw loose. I'll go crazy!

Oh sorry I goofed! My main time line is 12 fps! I can't belive I didn't see this before.

  • FCP Multicam - mixed frame rates & audio sync

I created a multicam from an hour of video from three cameras and two additional sound sources.
One camera was set to 24fps but was only used for a few shots.  Both the other cameras were set to 25fps (the only option).
I did not include one of the audio sources in the multicam - it was a lapel mic and I figured I would use only bits of it where necessary.
However, this audio runs at a slower speed to the multicam - exactly 4% slower, which suggests that the multicam works by dropping frames from the 25fps clips.
The pitch is also different - making the lapel mic audio unusable if there is music in the background (it was a wedding - so there was a lot of that).
What did I do wrong here?

Thanks Jim. I just want to be sure there's no other solution. Almost all the footage in this feature is 24p, so editing in a 30i framework is not a good option. Here's a video comparing the difference in how FCP and Premiere resolve 29.97 footage in a 23.98 sequence: Is there really no setting or process that will have Premiere play it back smoothly?

  • Import of clips at wrong frame rate

Never had this before. In a previous project with no problems. I open the project and many of my mp4 outputs from AE imported at 5fps. Tried to interpret the footage to 30 and it just shortened the clip length to zero. Eventually I had to reexport and replace the clips. Odd.

Maybe not so odd with that format.  MP4 is a very poor choice an an intermediary.  DNxHD MXXF files, or UT AVI files are far superior.

  • Wrong frame rate, syncing in PT, what is going to happen when back in FCX

In a short movie I recorded audio on my recorder  at 24 bits and 48 khz, video was shot at 29.97 with 2 dslr's and  for some reason has been edited in a 25i project.
( a permanent orange bar remained on the timeline)
I asked them to bring me the whole library, since i didn't notice this issue  I exported a video for protools of course at 25 and worked on it in protools, I synced all audio dialogue and effects, bounced a stereo audio master and reimported it in FCX in time line.
I was wondering if I am going to expect any trouble about all this.

  • Wrong capture frame rate

    Hi,
I'm trying to conform a movie from recapture, and I'm with troubles.
I'm capturing from HDCAM 1080i 59.94 and after capture my material should be 29.97fps. But always is different.
Sometimes is 29.95 or 28.54 well... severals differents values.
I see the speed of image is OK, I haven't drops.
But when go to conform the timecodes doesn't match.
FCP shows correct frame rate on Bin, but QT shows these variables frame rates.
Anothers programs as Autodesk Smoke and Assimilate Scratch recognize the wrong frame rate too.
I have a Mac Pro 12 core, using the latest Snow Leopard, FCP Studio 3 and QT.
For storage have a External SAS disk array with 32 TB wich has a sustainted througput of 700MB/s (fully tested and OK).
For capture I'm using a Aja Kona 3.
Actually I already saw this problem in anothers versions of FCP and anothers machines.. but I never get to fix it.
Please, someone already had this problem and fix it?
    Thanks in advance.
    Thiago Cabral

QT almost is always wrong.  It plays what it can... and with Snow Leopard, QT X is just worse.  The fact that Smoke and Scratch report the wrong frame rate is really puzzling.  Try this...use the CONFORM option in Cinema Tools to conform the footage to 29.97.  Might be just the thing needed to LOCK that frame rate still.
