File Labels on USB drive

I have a USB drive attached to my AirPort (3 actually). I use Labels (the colors in the info box) on images and such to aid in ratings & categorization. I've found that I can copy files with Labels applied to the drives and they keep the labels, but I cannot change the labels on files that are already on the drives.
I suspected it was just a caching issue, but I have tried unmounting & remounting the drives to no avail.

  • Cannot emtpy trash containing a file from FAT32 USB drive

    Hi
    I had copied a .app file from another mac over a network to my FAT32 USB drive. I then deleted the file from the USB drive per normal it went to trash. The problem is that i cannot empty this one file out of trash.
    What iv tried thus far:
    - I tried restarting.
    - I tried dragging it back onto the USB and deleting again.
    - I tried dragging it onto my desktop, upon which it asked for my system password, and then deleting again.
    - I tried putting it back on the USB drive, restarting in windows XP, and tried deleting in windows.
    None of the above has worked. The file is Zero KB. Windows gave an error with something about the file is not completed...?
    Thanks in advance
    cheers

  • I am trying to reinstall Windows on my macbook pro.  I downloaded the support files and Windows 7 iso file to a USB drive.  However, when I try to run the setup.exe program I get the message "this program cannot be run in DOS mode."

    I am trying to reinstall Windows (would not launch).  I removed the partition and started over.  I downloaded the support files and Windows 7 iso file to a USB drive.  However, when I try to run the setup.exe program I get the message "this program cannot be run in DOS mode."  I was successful before, what am I doing wrong this time?

    Try a restart.
    If that doesn't fix the problem, shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application unistaller. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Can't open office files from my usb drive

    Dear forum
    Sins a few weeks ago i am not able to open office file from my USB-drive.
    However i can copy the file to the desktop and than i can open them.
    I have this problme only (for as far i know) with office files.
    greetings Ypkoba

    If the drive is NTFS format, the Mac can read, but not write thiose drives natively.
    So the issue may be that the temp file and the output file cannot be created on the same drive.

  • Trouble accessing files on external USB drive after 10.6.8 update

    Upgraded to Mac 10.6.8 on my MacBook Pro (I'm not a techie, but the "About This Mac" thingy says 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 - I assume that means something to somebody). Since the upgrade, I've been having problems accessing data on an external HD connected via USB - there were no issues before the upgrade, but now it's impossible to even navigate to a particular file or subfolder half the time, as the process freezes 95% of the time (every so often I am able to get through, for no obvious reason) - usually I just get what looks like an empty folder and a little spinning thing in the bottom right-hand corner. Sometimes when I do get to a file - say it's a ZIP file - I'll try to unZIP it and the process will hang; if I try to drag it to the desktop and unZIP it there, I can't get it to copy to the desktop, I just get the "copying files" box and a bar that never shows any progress, it just hangs at zero bytes out of whatever it might be.
    Also having intermittent issues with another external USB drive, which is the one I use for Time Machine - about one in every five backup attempts is successful, the rest of the time I get a message saying the backup couldn't be performed.
    I have two external FireWire drives as well, and I'm having no trouble with either of those - so I'm assuming the problem is USB-related (and 10.6.8 related, since none of this was happening before the upgrade).
    So - I'm wondering if anybody else is having the same issues, and f there's a solution that a non-techie like me could handle that won't make blood come out of my ears.
    Cheers!

    Thanks baltwo - the PRAM tip was helpful. For some reason I still have trouble accessing a few files, I'm putting that down to them being somehow corrupted. Eric, thanks, but I tried using Disk Utility and the communication problems I was having with the drive meant that the repair couldn't be performed. I may try again now that that side of things seems to be running a little more smoothly. Anyway, thank you both!

  • How to import m4a files in a USB drive and play them using iTune?

    I have set the target directory of iTune to that USB drive, iTune just does not play them.  The length of the playing is awful long.  But in reality , they are merely 1min long reading when I listen to them using Window Media Player.

    CS4 is much older than Windows 8. CS4 is meant to work on XP or Vista. Getting it to run on Windows 7 was a bit of an issue, so I'm pleasantly surprised to hear that you have CS4 running on Windows 8 at all.
    It's also possible that a new camera records in a codec that such an old version of AE doesn't understand.
    Make sure you're running the latest update to your version of AE. You're on version 9, so make sure you've run the Adobe After Effects CS4 9.0.3 Update (I would not suggest updating in the middle of a project though, as any changes might break AE). I would like to reiterate: you're running a version that was released six years ago on an operating system that was released much more recently. So, be careful how you tread. However, if you're not running 9.0.3, you're missing some bug fix updates that might solve your problem.
    I would suggest upgrading to a newer version of AE.
    That being said, as Dave mentions, CS4 and earlier had lots of trouble with MPEG-4 and other codecs that used interframe compression. Can you open the files in your version of Premiere? If so, you can use Premiere or the Adobe Media Encoder to convert to a proper intermediate codec. MOV is just a container format. QuickTime with the PNG codec will work in After Effects CS4 with no problems as will the other codecs Dave mentions.

    Might try this...
    Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
    Then move these files to the Desktop for now...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
    PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • Files Copied to USB Drive Disappear

    I attached a WD USB drive formatted as FAT32 to my new Airport Extreme but cannot seem to get it to work correctly. I try to copy a file to it, it appears to copy fine (copy finishes, the file shows up in the drive) then a few seconds later the file disappears. I then hooked the drive directly to my Mac and, sure enough, the file is not there. I hooked it back to the AEBS and tried copying a file to it from a PC. Same as before, all appears to go well but the file doesn't actually get copied. Any idea what might cause this and how to fix it?

    This morning I was playing around some more and found that some of the files I tried to copy to the drive now show up when the drive is connected to my Mac but are still not visible when connected to the Airport Extreme. I have a different drive that works fine but it is smaller (500GB vs 750GB).

  • Automator to mount multiple ISO files on external USB drives

    I have several ISO files on an external USB drive on a Mac mini. Double clicking on any of the ISO mounts it, one at a time.
    I need to have an automator that mounts ALL ISO it can see on a given USB external drive. I have written an Apple script but that hangs up the Mac mini. I need help because I am not familiar with Applescript or Apple automator. I used Unix years ago, butg have a hard time with AppleScript.

    Macs can't normally write to NTFS drives:
    http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=7426620&messageID=4582486
    Your other problem sounds like another computer has the files open or application has the files open simultaneously. Try shutting down your Mac, and isolating your Mac from any network and try rebooting again in safe mode by holding the shift key at startup.

  • How are there files, on my USB drive, that show up on a PC but not on my macbook?

    I have a usb drive containing several files.  When I insert it into a pc, all the files are displayed.  When I insert it into my macbook, only some of the files are there.  Why is this?  How can I set it so that all files are visible?  I want to delete files.  But, I can't delete files that I can't see.

    Yeah, it piosses me to no end too. And haven't been able to disable indexing and general crap-filling of FAT32/ExFAT volumes by the OS. So, I use the following shellscript on Terrminal to purge the stuff before ejecting the stick:
    #!/bin/bash
    if [ `pwd` == $HOME ]
      then echo "Invalid directory: $HOME"; exit;
    fi
    echo "Cleaning `pwd`..."
    rm -rf .[a-z]*
    rm -rf ._*
    rm -rf .[A-Z]*
    Since each USB stick may have a different name, I have to manually CD to the appropriate directory inside /Volumes before running it. And it has protective code to protect my azz if I accidentally run it on my home directory and attempt to shoot myself in the foot.

  • [SOLVED]Cannot move files from mounted usb drive

    When I try to move a file off of my usb drive I get the following error:
    mv: cannot remove ‘homework-1.txt’: Permission denied
    The usb drive is mounted to a folder that I created as a normal user in my home directory. However, when I call ls -l on my home directory it says that the directory I'm using as a mount point is owned by root:
    $ ls -l | grep mnt/
    drwxr-xr-x 10 root root 4096 Dec 31 1969 mnt
    When I unmount the flash drive, the ownership of the mount point changes back to me:
    $ ls -l | grep mnt/
    drwxr-xr-x 2 hugo hugo 4096 Feb 4 16:12 mnt
    When I move the file I want as a super user it works but I don't get to retain ownership of the file anymore.
    How can I make it so that when I mount the usb drive I have access to it as a normal user?

    no, just no.
    To expand on this... the rule changes permissions on all USB block devices (and will change permissions on some sysfs nodes as well), which is dangerous and doesn't accomplish what the OP wants -- to change permissions on the filesystem. You've also given the rule an irrelevant name (locale? wat?), and then point to an incredibly outdated resource (last updated nearly 6 years ago!!!) about udev rules. udev(7) is far more relevant and up to date. It doesn't mention outdated commands which no longer exist (udev$foo were all merged into udevadm).

    Ok, lets be brief.
    This problem is annoying me for years. It is totally reproducible although random. It happens when copying to external drives (mainly USB) when they are configured for "safe removal". I have had issues copying to NTFS and FAT32 partitions. I have
    had issues using 4 different computers, from 7 years old to brand new ones, using AMD or intel chipsets and totally different USB controllers, and using many different USB sticks, hard disks, etc. The only common thing in those computers is Windows 7 x64 and
    the external drives optimization for "safe removal". Installing Teracopy reduces the chances of data corrpution, but does not eliminate them completely. The only real workaround (tested for 2 years) is activating the write cache in the device manager
    properties of the drive. In that way, windows uses the same transfer mechanisms as for the internal drives, and everything is OK.
    MICROSOFT guys, there is a BIG BUG in windows 7 x64 external drives data transfer mechanism. There is a bug in the cache handling mechanism of the safe removal function. Nobody hears, I've been years talking about this in forums. It is a very dangerous bug
    because it is silent, and many non professional people is experiencing random errors in their backup data. PLEASE, INVESTIGATE THIS. YOU NEED TO FIX SUCH IMPORTANT BUG. IT IS UNBELIEVABLE THAT IT IS STILL THERE SINCE 2009!!!
    Hope this helps.
