File Reporter - NSS file owners on OES2 Linux

Does file reporter have the ability to report on NSS file OWNERSHIP on OES2 SP1/SP2 linux without having to rely upon LUM-enabled users?
(in other words, NSS itself has this information but "pure" linux things do not know about these without enabling LUM for every user in your tree for every server).

NFR, when using the agentncp, does not have any information that is not available to the ncp APIs. The NCP agent does not know about the "linux" ownerships, only DS based ownerships. If you want the two ownerships to match, LUM is required.

  • File owner in Volume Inventory reports

On Netware, I sometimes used the Volume Inventory report in iManager to find files on NSS volumes that are owned by specific user. Now I migrated to OES Linux and it appears that these reports show file ownership based on Linux users not eDirectory users. Can someone suggest a good alternative that would give me the information I'm looking for?

Here you go (this is for OES2, so I don't know if the same applies on OES11). It DID drastically slow things down in OES2, so if it works on OES11, it will probably do the same for it:
Here's IF you wanted to enable the non-LUM ownership:
"InventoryResolveNonLumOwnerName" in the httpstkd.conf file. By default Inventory resolve non-lum user names is false. If you wish the non-lum user names to resolved set parameter to true. See conf file clip below:
; InventoryResolveNonLumOwnerName - This parameter is used when doing an inventory and file owner uid is set to nobody.
; This occurs when a file is owned by a user that is not lum enabled.
; By setting this parameter to true, we will try to resolve the owner name using Novll NSS apis.
; By using Novell NSS apis to resolve the owner name there is a major performance impact when doing an inventory.
; The more non-user owners encountered the longer the inventory may take.
; The default will be false
; If you modify the setting it will be necessary to restart NRM.
    ; Options: false, true
; false - Non-Lum Owner is NOT resolved
    ; true - Non-Lum Owner is resolved
; Example (Resolve non-lum owners to owner name):
    ; InventoryResolveNonLumOwnerName true;
; Example (do not resolve non-lum owners):
    ; InventoryResolveNonLumOwnerName false
    InventoryResolveNonLumOwnerName false
    3. Edit the conf file and add the following "InventoryResolveNonLumOwnerName false" or "InventoryResolveNonLumOwnerName true". FYI: if the InventoryResolveNonLumOwnerName parameter is not in conf. file InventoryResolveNonLumOwnerName false is assumed.

  • How to get information about file owner in UNIX

    Dear all
I would like to write a file management program in Solaris 8 using Java.
However, I don't know how to get the file owner and file permission information
by any Java class. Please advise.
    Sincerely Yours
    Mr. Voravit H.

I fear there will be no pure java solution, because file owner and file permissions are platform-dependent issues, especially about the gory details (groups, executable / sticky / setuid-bits, ACL etc.)
AFAIK java supports only the notion of a file's being readable or writeable but nothing further.
On the other hand, some (even popular and wide-sprread) platforms / file systems do not have the notion of the owner of a file.
So you will need some platform-specific solution like running an external command or calling the C function "stat".

  • File Sharing within the Linux filesystem. How to do?

    I folks,
i need a java solution to implement a file sharing at the linux filesystem.
Two java applications which are running in the Linux world need the access to one file at the linux filesystem. How can i do this with java???
    Any suggestions?

Read/Write access required from both apps I assume? Do both apps run in the same account that owns the file(s)? Is it possible or feasable to put the file information into a database running on Linux instead?

  • How do I access BSD file tree from within Linux?

I just installed PC-BSD 8.0 RC on an external USB HDD.  I went with the PC-BSD default partition layout, i.e. one primary partition for the entire PC-BSD slice, and 4 "partitions" within that slice, for /, swap, /usr and /var.
In order to access the PC-BSD file tree from within Linux, I mount it as follows:
    mount -t ufs -o ufstype=ufs2,ro /dev/sdb1 /mnt/bsd
But after executing this command I can only access the PC-BSD / , not /usr and /var , presumably because they reside on two BSD "partitions" (subslices) different from / .  Is there any way I can mount these (read-only) in Linux, too, or would I have to reinstall PC-BSD and opt for laying out the slice differently, i.e. specifying only / and swap in sdb1?

Look at  /dev/sdb*  there should be more than just sdb1.  You would need to mount those to see which is which.  For ufs write support the default kernel needs to be recompiled with experimental enabled.

  • Time Machine file owner problem

I have a Firewire drive connected to my iMac. I back up the iMac and a Macbook Pro to it. Due to problems with the MBP's wireless I fell back from 10.6.1 to 10.5.8. That didn't fix my problem so I went back to 10.6 after an erase and install of 10.5 and the upgrade to 10.6.
I just noticed a file owner problem with my Time Machine backups from the MBP. The laptop has one admin and two regular user accounts. The two regular accounts have the owners swapped so that when I enter TM and look through the backups of the home folders, the icons have a red do not enter sign.
I just went to the iMac and looked through the MBP's backup data with the root account. Some of the MBP files list an owner not even on the MBP, but on the iMac.
Long term I'd like to move the two computer's backups to separate partitions, but can I fix the ownership on the TM drive safely?

do not change ownership of anything on the TM drive. if I understand you correctly the two standard accounts seem to own each others home directories on the backup, is this right? that can be easily fixed by swapping UIDs of those accounts. but i first want to make sure that I understand the issue correctly.

Hi everybody, I created a private folder on the PX4-400d unit with restricted access. I am connecting to that folder with afp or ftp protocols. Everytime I copy one file to that folder and I check the file properties, it says "file owner: nobody". I just updated firmware to the last version (4.1.6.26800). Any suggestions? thanks, Carlo

  • Mounting NSS Cluster Volumes on other Linux Nodes

    Hi,
have anyone experience how to mount OES NSS Cluster Volumes on other
    Linux Servers (SLES/RedHat/Centos)?
Traditional i would say i have to use NFS, but did this run fine on OES
    Cluster Volumes?
How must i do this here, what are the recommend mount options?
Documentation say do it "native to Linux"???
    hmm, how?
How should i write the /etc/exports file on OES Cluster Nodes(should
these look same on all Cluster Nodes)?
What happen on Resource Failover, should nfsd restarted?
    Have anyone running this?
    Regards
    Thomas

Since you're using NSS in a clustered setup, I am assuming you're using just NCP?
I'm not sure if the ncpmount or the NCL (Novell Client for Linux) work on anything other than the Suse platforms (you mentioned RHEL and CentOS).
Otherwise you MAY be able to also run CIFS to "publish" the NSS volume and then you should be able to use native SMB connection methods to connect from the other linux OS's.
I would probably avoid NFS only because it has no concept of file locking (or at least doesn't seem to care) and may happily overwrite a file that's in use by someone with NCP access.

In BO 4.0: Inside Installation directory theres no useraccount directory.
Please anybody tell me the path of BO 4.0 in the linux server to clear the WEBI report cache.

  • Migrate cluster to OES2 Linux and new storage

    Hi,
I want to migrate a 4 node OES2/Netware NCS cluster to a 4 node OES2/Linux NCS cluster. The storage also has to migrate from old to new storage. The two storage devices are not connected to each other, so I figured a rolling migration is out of the question. So I will build up the new cluster, migrate all resources with the tools provided by Novell and some manual changes.
The cluster hosts several volumes, DNS, DHCP, GroupWise and ZENworks. I don't see much trouble in the migration of DNS, DHCP and GroupWise, but changing references to all ZEN objects is a tedious job.
To minimise the necessary changes in ZEN objects, login scripts etc, I would like to know if it is possible to rename/renumber the new cluster after everything has been migrated and give it back the old name and ip numbers. If not, what would be the best approach?

I'm not sure how well eDir works in this case. Typically, creating a NEW volume (even with the same name) will not automatically re-link the eDirectory objects.
    Example:
You have a ZEN NAL object that deploys a network-based MSI like:
    \\server1\vol1\data\something.msi
You now create a new cluster object and a NEW virtual server\volume object. I'm not sure you can create a NEW virtual server object with the same name as the old one (I could be wrong--I've never tried it). I guess it would be possible if it was in a diff. eDir container.
Regardless, even if you CAN create a new \\server1\vol1
It's going to have a different GUID in eDir and the eDir objects that WERE using the "old"
    \\server1\vol1
are not going to magically know about the new stuff.
Now, from a CLIENT perspective, the Novell Client (assuming 4.91 SP5 here) would happily map to the "new" one with the same name and not be any wiser.
But the home directory attributes on users, and ZEN objects WILL know the difference and you will have to re-edit them all.
It's possible that SOME ZEN NAL objects will just pass along the stuff to the client, in which case, IF you can keep the UNC path (or mapped drive letter) the same, then you should be good to go. But not all ZEN objects are created equally (ie, your ZFD inventory object, server objects, etc.)
Login scripts can easily be adjusted (just depends upon if you have LOTS of them to do or not as it can be time consuming).
