Final cut express without firewire

I had to shoot with a small camera without firewire, it has only USB. When I connect it to the computer, adobe photo downloader opens. How to get the files in to Final Cut Express ? Thank you. Katalin

Your HDR-CX116E shoots high def video as AVCHD, so FCE should work with it.
If Adobe Photo Downloader is getting in the way when you connect your camera, just close Photo Downloader and then start FCE.   It should recognize your camera.  Use FCE's Log & Transfer function to import the video clips.
Alternatively, look in Adobe Photo Downloader preferences to see if there is a way to make it ignore video.
Notes:
You will need to select an Easy Setup in FCE that corresponds to your video's frame size (probably 1920x1080)
Standard def mode in this camcorder saves video as MPEG2, which cannot be directly edited in FCE.  If you are using this mode let us know and we can provide more info.

  • How to Import WMV's into Final Cut Express WithOUT Flip4Mac

How can I import a .wmv into Final Cut Express v.1.0 without using Flip4Mac? I am doing a video for a friend who gave me a .wmv file and it throws up a "Flip4Mac Free Trial" watermark. So lame. Is there a free version of something I can use? I googled but couldn't find. Any suggestions? Thanks SO much in advance.

There aren't any free import/export components for WMV content. F4M is the best, since it's integrated into FC, but, as you've found out, without paying the $49., the free version limits the clip to 1/2 it's duration up to 30 seconds, and puts the watermark on.
The other software that converts is Visual Hub, but it doesn't have the FC integration...it's slightly cheaper.
There's one other option HERE, that I have not tried. Supposedly they will convert video to other formats for you.

  • Converting .MTS for use in Final Cut Express, without loosing quality

I have an external hard drive full of .MTS files from my JVC camcorder that I cannot open with Final Cut Express.
I bought a piece of conversion software, iSkySoft Video Converter, to convert them into a more accessible format such as .mov or .avi, but they lose their HD quality during the conversion. I have also tried software available through Mac, Voltaic, but this also seems to dilute picture quality.
In a previous post, I was recommended Clip Wrap, but having downloaded it, it will not let me open my .MTS files to convert in the first place. I have contacted Clip Wrap Support about this, but am yet to hear back.
I would like suggestions as to how to open these .MTS files in Final Cut, or a piece of conversion software that retains full high definition quality when converting.
I am not very computer savvy, Im afraid, so can any technical jargon be explained as best as possible please! Just for reference, in case it helps, my camcorder is a JVC GZ-HD10.
    Thank you.

MarkTrif, if iskysoft isn't working, use mpeg streamclip to try again, it is free. or get another good third party MTS converter like HD Video Converter for Mac, specially designed to convert HD video formats like AVCHD (mts, m2ts), H.264/AVC, MPEG-2 (ts), DivX, HD WMV, MPEG-4 to SD videos like AVI, MPEG, WMV, MP4, DivX, MOV, my friends recommend it to me, it's safe and works pretty well for me. keep the video image quality. • IMovie-like themes in Final Cut Express, without using iMovie

While I have been getting up to speed using FCE--thanks to Tom Wolski's instructional DVD and book--I was reminded recently while watching a neighbor's video made in iMovie '09 how nice it is to have a variety of pre-made "themes" for titles and transitions.
Is there a similar set of "themes" one can buy for FCE?
If not, how can the average person create such themes for FCE? (Does it require other software or a college degree in computer graphic design? Or is this a feature of FCP that is absent in FCE?)
I know I could apply themes to desired clips in iMovie '09 and then export and reimport into FCE, but I don't want to lose video quality when iMovie "throws out" every other vertical line of interlaced video.
Thanks in advance for your input.

    Hi Tom:
Thanks for the reply. I have a few follow-up questions. Please forgive me if they are rudimentary; I'm not at all familiar with FCP or Motion, or these pre-built Motion projects.
    Tom Wolsky wrote:
They are quite different. They're pre-built Motion projects in which you can load some content or add text depending on the project. They're primarily titling projects so they're not strictly themes in the sense that they are in iMovie.
I'm trying to get a sense of what these pre-built Motion projects are like. Do they create titles like one would find in the iMovie themes such as Bulletin Board, Filmstrip, or Comic Book? They may be very different. I'd love to see few examples of these pre-built Motion projects on the web. Can you steer me to a URL where I can see such examples on the web? Any ideas how I get a better sense of what these pre-built Motion projects offer?
There are no associated transitions with them for instance, though most of the pre-built projects could be edited in Motion and made into alpha transitions.
Is this something that a person reasonably familiar with FCE could learn to do without too much difficulty in FCP/Motion? Unless Apple decides to release something along these lines in future versions of FCE, I might have to upgrade to FCP, but I don't want to jump in if I'm going to be over my head.
Do you have any instructional videos out for FCP, Tom?
    Thanks.

  • How to render in Final Cut Express without widescreen and black bars?

    Hi there,
I have been having problems when importing my xbox 360 gameplay into FCE, when it is imported it says it needs to be "rendered" when I complete the render the gameplay turns into widescreen with black bars on top and bottom.
Watch this video on youtube and you can see what I mean
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0Wi0hDq-iU
I have searched and searched on the net but found nothing useful that could help me.
So any tips info would be greatly appreciated, thanks Chris.

Do you mean size format and time length? If not please explain for me.
If so, the original file size, length and format that is going into Steamclip is 200mb, is an mp4 and goes for 2:12 minutes.
Then after I convert this file it becomes a mov file and the size is increased to 1.02 GB does this seem like I am doing this right in MPEG Streamclip?
I only just got FCE two days ago so I don't really know how to check the item properties in FCE, could you please tell me how?"
    Thanks, Chris.

  • Using a Flip video camera with Final Cut Express

I've just recently bought one of those flip video cameras (http://www.theflip.com) which is great, but I can't seem to get the footage imported into Final Cut Express without it then needing to be rendered when I place it on the timeline.
Does anyone have experience using this camera with FCE, and if so, which settings did you use please? I've tried tweaking most of them with little success.
    Thanks!

    Hi Simon,
in addition to Martin's instructions I suggest you to make sure, in MPEG Streamclip:
    - you actually select Export to QuickTime (not Export to DV)
    - you set the right frame rate (frequency), that is 29,97 for NTSC.
Personally I usually set Interlaced Scaling checked, and Deinterlace Video unchecked, but I'm not sure these are the right settings in your case.
With the above settings you should be able to import the resulting video into FCE without requiring any initial rendering, if the FCE Easy Setup is DV-NTSC.
Warning: I use MPEG Streamclip 1.8 (the latest as fa as I know) where the Frequency parameter is in the Export main window.

  • I run Final Cut Express 4.0.1; I shoot with a Sony HDR-CX260V. How do I import from the camera directly to Final Cut, without having to go through the intermediate step of using iMovie?

    I use Final Cut Express 4.0.1; I shoot with a Sony HDR-CX260V.
How do I import from camera to Final Cut without going through the intermediate step of using iMovie?

If you shoot in one of the following modes you should be able to Log & Transfer directly into FCE:
HD:  1920x1080/60i (FX or FH mode)
HD:  1440x1080/60i (HQ or LP mode)
    SD:  720x480/60i
1080/60p (PS mode) seems to be the default mode in your camcorder.  FCE only supports progressive video in 720p50 or 720p60.   That's probably why you have had to import via iMovie.
It would be better to upgrade to Final Cut Pro X, the version currently supported.  FCE was discontinued over 18 months ago and is not supported on Lion or Mountain Lion.

  • Final Cut Express 2.0.3 with Tiger 10.4.4: No Firewire anymore?

Hello world, am I the only one with this problem?
I just purchased and installed Tiger 10.4.3. (Yes, I'm an idiot.)
Well, Final Cut Express 2.0.3 -- which ran so well with Panther -- is now useless with Tiger. I also just downloaded and installed the Tiger 10.4.4 update; Apple says this update woud fix some Firewire problems. But it didn't fix my Firewire problems.
I connected a Canon XLS1 camera to my G5 Dual 2MHz: The Mac's System Info detects it as XLS1.
I also connected a Panasonic NV DV-2000 player/recorder to the same G5: The Mac's System Info detects it as an "unknown device" though, but it detects it. This device worked always well with the old Panther.
Anyway, neither the Canon nor the Panasonic gets access to Final Cut. Only the Mac's System Info detects them.
Ok, now I have a few widget toys and a few other cosmetic things for 130 Euro, but no Final Cut anymore. Heck, I bought this Mac to work with Final Cut.
If this problem cannot be fixed, I'll return to Panther and want my money back. There was no warning that Tiger wouldn't run with Final Cut Express. I can't believe that I am the only one on earth who works with the above devices and versions.
Thank you for your attention! Any hints are greatly appreciated.
    Best regards

    Heureka, here's the solution, indeed:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301852
I can tell you why it confused me yesterday: I tried a similar trick before: As described by Apple, I deleted in "library/receipts" all quicktime PKG files with a version number in the file name. I also (not instructed by Apple) deleted my 7.0.4 quicktime application in the "applications" folder. Then I re-executed PKG of quicktime 7.0.4 (this PKG was already on my harddisk, so I thought I don't need to re-download 7.0.4). The installation programme started. Shortly before the end it terminated: "Installation not successful."
Today I did it exactly as described in the article linked above. In other words, after the deletion of the existing PKG files, I didn't re-execute that 7.0.4 PKG which was already on my hard disk, but I re-downloaded that same file from apple. (Also, this time I didn't delete the 7.0.4 Quicktime APP in the "applications" folder). The downloaded file and the included installation program looked exactly like what I already had on my disk. But for some reason it did the trick. Very bizarre. Perhaps it's a matter of the right sequence of the various installations.
Yesterday I was really disappointed. Now I'm happy again. I hope it stays stable.
And for the next five years I will follow again my old motto: "Never update a well working system!"
    Thank you for your help!
    Cheers.

  • Firewire 800 problem? cant see my Panasonic camcorder on Final Cut Express

    Hi
I have a new IMAC 27 in, intel dual processor (which I love) and its running the lastest version of snow leopard. I got it for video editing (dec 09) and I'm fairly new to macs and the firewire 800.
I have a panasonic 3ccd camera nNV-GS500 and after finally figuring it out I got a new cable - a brand new firewire 800/400 cable. However nothing can be seen when I start up Final Cut pro express or imovie.
I have tried turning off mac, unplugging it, then turning on camera before turning on imac.
Looking at some of the threads it seems there are some issues for seeing camcorders with firewire 800 and that a firmware? (is this a download for hardware update) is an update is due - can anyone confirm what i should do.
    thanks in advance

Cathy, welcome to the Discussions group.
Here is the list of camcorders supported by iMovie and Final Cut Express. Your camera is not in the lists but may still work.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3290
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2948
When you are using the camera are you running it from its battery power or is it plugged into its own power source (same question would apply to your external drive which may have a problem if its not using its own power supply depending upon how much power it would draw from the computer and how much power it needs to be reliable). You should be running the camera from its own power supply.
When you are having a problem, isolate the sources of potential conflict. Make sure no other devices are plugged into the computer. That means you'll be transferring your video to your internal disk. You can always copy or move it later to an external disk if that's where you want to store it permanently.
Follow the instructions in your camera manual carefully and we hope that works. If it doesn't work, then be creative. If the manual says to start the camera first in PLAY mode, start it in RECORD mode but then switch to PLAY mode to jumpstart FCE or iMovie to recognize there's a camera installed. That hint was provided in another thread on this topic and worked for that person. You can vary starting the camera before FCE or iMovie and then try starting FCE or iMovie first followed by the camera. Just a few variations and hope again one works.
All variations fail, and the vendors web site indicates it should work, then maybe your Firewire port on the computer has a problem. Look in "About This Mac" to see the status of the Firewire service with different devices plugged in. It's not a common problem but can happen.

  • Final Cut Express - viewing fullscreen camera playback without importing??

    Hi all,
Is it possible to playback a Firewire video camera into Macbook Pro and view the playback full screen on an apple cinema display?
I tried it in iMovie but you only get the standard size video import window.
Will Final Cut Express 4 do it (I have the older version 3 HD).
    Thanks

But does that only work if you have Final Cut Pro installed.
No. It is a separate app, that works outside of FCP.
I just tried Veescope but it wont recognise my camera,
    What camera? COnnected how?

  • Final Cut Express 4 (HD) -- needs firewire?

I have a pretty nice camcorder, a Canon HG10.  But it uses a USB wire to transfer film to a computer (has no firewire).  I bought Final Cut Express (FCE) 4 (HD) and now I have been told that FCE 4 only can work with a firewire?  Is that possible?  I don't understand as the USB/firewire is just the mechanism to transfer the firm and FCE is really the editing software.  With this camera film is transferred (by the USB wire) adequately/quickly into iMovie etc.
Any comments/workarounds would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Use Log & Transfer with either the USB-connected camera or a card reader. FCE will convert to AIC to enable you to edit your AVCHD footage.

  • Final Cut Express not recognizing firewire

I recently deleted my hardrive on my '04 iBook, and reinstalled all my software. I have Final Cut Express version 2.0.2, and upon reinstalling it, and firing it up for the first time, with my XL2 on and attached via firewire, the "External A/V" window pops up, and says "Unable to locate the following devices..." referring to the firewire connection. Now that always pops up when nothing's plugged in that's turned on, but this is the first time it's ever done this when my camera is plugged in and on. I went through every NTSC firewire setting on the "Easy Setup" window, but nothing changed. iMovie reads my XL2 just fine with the same firewire cable. This problem did not occur before I clean out my hardrive, and reinstalled everything. But prior to reinstallation my "capture" function was freezing up after 5 minutes, and said my "startup disc" was full. Any ideas on what the current problems is?

I'm experiencing the same problem. I have a macbook pro 2.4 GHz, using a Canon HV20. When I enter FCE is prompts me saying "Unable to locate following device: Apple Firewire NTSC." However using imovie, everything works fine, I'm able to capture images simply by turning on my camera.
Not sure if its a problem with my FCE, because I've tried to edit in FCE using video from imovie and it gives me an error message constantly.
    any ideas?

  • Using Final Cut Express for video editing without attaching external device

    Hello,
I am a newbie to Final Cut Express as well as Mac's in general. I am wanting to use Final Cut Express for video editing of files, but without an attached camera. Is there any way to have Final Cut Express startup without having it prompt for an external A/V device? I just want to do some basic editing and use the chroma key feature. Can anyone help?
    Greatly Appreciated,

    Hi Zak,
Unfortunately, I've tried that and I get into an issue that was addressed in this posting: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=836595&tstart=120 where FCE will show the splash screen and then the program doesn't start. I then have to delete FCE preferences and then I will get the Easy Setup dialog box prompt me again for choosing the external device.
I am looking for a way to use FCE for video editing of files that I already have on my computer that I created using iClone software and is in .avi, or .mp4 format. I get FCE to work one time without the external device actually being attached, but then when restarting the program I get the dialog box asking for the external device and if it's not there, the program just closes, and to get it to work again, I have to delete the preference files and go through the process all over again which is time consuming especially when this is at work. If FCE is not the right program, can anyone suggest a good video editing program that doesn't require an external device and is as good or better than FCE?
Thanks again for your help and support,
