Firefox 3.6.13-1 absolutely won't start

I've been scouring the web for a while now looking for any sort of thing to try. I really want to fix this issue as I do not want to have to re-install or delete my user account (that might fix it since root is able to use firefox).
It's funny, because when I sudo firefox in the terminal, it immediately launches. I tried deleting .firefox in .mozilla, and then I deleted ~/.mozilla altogether. I also have deleted/reinstalled firefox 3.6.13-1 with pacman -S firefox and I do believe I'm using my optimized mirrors. I've searched around for any other sort of thing I could try to no avail.
No matter what, when I try to run firefox either from the icon on my desktop or from the terminal, nothing happens. Sometimes it'll stick around on my taskbar for a bit, with "starting firefox" disappearing after a second or two.
Can anyone help? Thanks.

@Mr Green
Tried that (again), doesn't start as expected.
@Brebs
I did the strace.
Not really sure what to do with this:

  • The procedure entry point NS_Set DLL Directory could not be located in dynamic link library Xul.dll. Firefox 4 downloaded and used yesterday won't start today. Any answers?

I downloaded Firefox 4 yesterday. I used it and had no problems. I started my computer today and clicked the Firefox icon and got the message "The procedure entry point NS_Set DLL Directory could not be located in dynamic link library Xul.dll" .I tried to shutdown and restart and got the same message.I use Norton Security. Could it not recognize Firefox 4 and done this?

'''Edit: '''That was a lot of questions. You might want to just re-run the Firefox 5.0.1 installer to see whether that corrects what appears to be a mismatch of files. I suggest saving the installer to the desktop, restarting Windows to ensure that all file locks are released, and then running the installer. As always, you can download from here: http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html
In your other post, you wrote "I just downloaded FireFox 5.0 today, and none of the icons on my desktop will open. This is the message that I receive. The procedure entry point NS_Set DLL Directory could not be located in dynamic link library Xul.dll."
Can you describe what happens in these different scenarios:
    (1) Start Firefox with its own program icon. Error dialog, but Firefox runs normally after you dismiss it? Or no error? Or Firefox won't start?
    (2) Firefox not running, double-click shortcut to web site on desktop. Error dialog but Firefox loads the page after you dismiss it? Or Firefox doesn't load the page? Or Firefox never loads??
    (3) Firefox running, double-click shortcut to web site on desktop. Error dialog but Firefox loads the page after you dismiss it? Or Firefox doesn't load the page? Or Firefox dies??
    (4) Double-click unrelated desktop shortcut. Does this give an error as well?
If you've noticed effects with links in documents or emails outside of Firefox, that could be a clue as well.

  • After updating Firefox to 3.6.14 it will not start, not even in safe mode after rebooting. Task Manager shows no Firefox running. I tried uninstalling Firefox & then reinstalling it. Stll won't start.

I get only an error message: " XULRunner-
Error: Platform version 1.9.2.13 is not compatible with minVersion >=1.9.2.14
    maxVersion<=1.9.2.14 "
    My system: Windows XP
I've tried the tips on the Firefox help pages.

I withdraw my 'I have this problem too'. My error was different, but a restart fixed whatever it was.

  • After auto-upgrade Firefox cannot open my profile and won't start.

I am running Firefox in a corporate environment. OS is Windows 7. Whenever an auto-upgrade is pushed out by Firefox, I get a message telling me that "firefox profile cannot be loaded it may be missing or inaccessible". Indeed, the latter is the case. My profile is no longer accessible to me. I am no longer its owner, according to Windows. Looking at the directory C:\Users\{my userid}\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\5a5finmq.default, I see that it's owner displays as "Unable to display current owner." and I am frozen out of Firefox. Examining this folder in Windows Explorer I cannot read, write, delete or do anything with what was once my profile.
Please don't tell me how to recreate my profile. This is a BUG and it needs to be fixed. I have a copy of an old profile and I am able to access it and transfer it into my profile directory and get up and running. BUT I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO DO THIS EVERY TIME FIREFOX DECIDES TO UPGRADE ITSELF. Why is Firefox mangling the ownership of my profile and when will this bug be fixed. I have a lot of important information in my profile and it's a pain to recreate this from scratch every time this happens.

    HI stevecoh1,
I am sorry to hear that the auto update to Firefox on your NTFS file system/corporate environment did not preserve the user profile. I recommend using firefox sync and using a device you have admin rights to preserve the user profile.
If you have access to a previous version of the profile it can be added to the profile folder that is missing in the update. Please reference these steps to restore the old profile.
[[Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles]]
[[Fix "The bookmarks and history system will not be functional" error message]]
I am hoping that the sqllite file is not locked on the user directory, though this will vary on the policy of the AD of your corporate environment. [https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=551436] If the file is locked and this is consistent this bug does need confirming.

I ended up putting it in DFU mode.  It's kinda hard to tell it was in DFU mode because nothing showed on the screen, it was just black, but the sounds from the computer helped to tell me it was connected.
Itunes still didn't recognize the device for whatever reason.
So I used redsn0w.  I don't know if I can say that on these forums, but considering itunes was worthless at this point I am going to give credit where credit is due.
Now I am giving itunes a second chance to upgrade to 5.1, if it doesn't work, well, back to redsnow and maybe I will even jailbreak it this time rather than just using the fecovery fix found under extras.

  • After reboot firefox won't start. runs in task manager, but won't pop up. reset, safe mode and uninstall/re-install won't help. ok if no reboot.

win7 Pro. has been running firefox ok. but lately with 25 and now 26, the firefox won't start. I can see firefox is running in task manager. but it just won't pop up.
if I download it again and install it, it will run, but every time I reboot the system, it just won't run again.
try: reset, safe mode, uninstall & reinstall, new/clean profile, none of those work.

There may be a corrupted file on Firefox.<br>
Please attempt to perform a clean reinstall. [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/forum-response-clean-reinstall (More Details)] This is different than a regular uninstall.
If a clean reinstall does not fix the issue, please try starting your operating system in safe mode.<br>
To do so, please do the following:
#Ensure that your computer is shut down completely
    #Press the power button
#Tap the <code>F8</code> key repeatedly before the Windows logo and startup screen is displayed
#Select Safe Mode With Networking for the advanced startup options list
Please report back with the results of both solutions.

  • I downloaded the new Firefox for my Mac and it won't open. I deleted the old version. What am I doing wrong?

I can't get firefox to open now that I erased the old version and tried to install the new version (6.0.2) on my Mac. I was hoping I could update it and have my bookmarks and everything intact, but when I drag the firefox symbol into my dock it won't do anything after downloading. I have put it in the trash to delete it and re-downloaded it, but nothing seems to help. On top of it, the fan on my computer goes on when I am trying to get firefox to work ????
    Thanks!
    Ty

  • Firefox 3.6.17 on Mac won't open tabs and more

    Mac OS X 10.6.7 (10J869)
    FireFox 3.6.17
new tabs won't open, just put a new tab on tab bar titled Untitled and cannot switch to the new tab.
Haven't tested all plugins, but firegestures, lastpass don't work.
    All worked fine yesterday...

This issue can be caused by an extension that isn't working properly.
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    * https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Safe+Mode
    See:
    * [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

  • Downloaded firefox 5.0.1 last night, worked fine, Turned computer on today, Mozilla Firefox, it won't start. Get error message, Error: Platform version '5.0' is not compatible with minVersion =5.0.1 maxVersion =5.0.1" What do I need to do to fix it?

We downloaded firefox 5.0.1 last night, began working with it. It did fine. After about an hour, I turned off my computer. When I turned on my computer, I click on Mozilla Firefox and it won't start. I get this error message, " Error: Platform version '5.0' is not compatible with minVersion >=5.0.1 maxVersion <=5.0.1" from XUL Runner. What do I need to do to fix it?

The updater wasn't able to update all the files and some were left as older versions.<br />
    Do a clean reinstall.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    * Firefox 5.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Uninstall your current Firefox version.
    * Do not remove personal data when you uninstall the current version.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
    * It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

  • Firefox won't start after 18.0.1 upgrade

I have upgraded to the latest version and then two days later, The mozilla Crash reporter opens and it won't start. Nothing happens when I press details.

  • Firefox Won't Start

Firefox was running fine on my Win7 Pro PC.
My PC started running slow, so I cycled the power. Afterward, Firefox started reporting, "can't log into server". Other browsers worked fine. So I tried a few things that didn't work, and I eventually uninstalled, then reinstalled Firefox.
First time I tried running Firefox after reinstalling, my PC bluescreened.
Now, Firefox simply won't start. I get the little spinning wheel for a few seconds, then nothing. A Firefox process shows up in task manager, but just goes away. Same thing happens when I try starting Firefox in Safe Mode.
A recent post with this title has a link to: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser_will_not_start_up , but the link gives me a "URL could not be retrieved" error.
I have also tried looking at the crash reports, but there is no "Submitted" folder under the Firefox folder.
    Help? Thanks!

Potentially important note. MalwareBytes was already installed - it looks like the problem with Firefox appears to have started after I downloaded an update to MalwareBytes.
It would be interesting to know if anyone else has experienced this problem.

  • Firefox won't start, there is no error message and it is not already running.

    Hi,
When I try to click on firefox, the little wait icon appears and then disappears. Nothing opens, not even safe mode. I've looked at the "Firefox won't start and there is no error message" help section and looked at my task manager processes. It seems that when I click firefox, it briefly appears on my processes and then disappears. This happened yesterday while I was in the middle of using it. At the same time, my Skype also crashed, which makes me think the two are correlated. The two programs still don't work. The only way that I can open firefox is if I install it all over again with the "launch firefox now" option checked at the end. When I have a firefox window open, I can open other firefox windows just fine. When I close it, nothing opens. Thanks for your help.

    1) Start Task Manager
    2) Open Processes (make the description area large enough to see)
    3) look for a description that says ''firefox''
    4) Select it and press End Process
    '''Now Firefox should work properly.'''

  • Firefox update failed, so I re-installed. Now firefox won't start up at all?

''locking as a duplicate of https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/969557''
So I ran firefox, and it was updating. While updating, firefox crashed for no apparent reason so I had to close it. Afterwards, every time I tried to start up firefox, it gave me the update failed error, followed by a crash less than a second later. I followed some instructions, uninstalling and re-installing firefox (without removing personal data), but now firefox won't start up at all!
    Now what?

  • Firefox won't start (not even in Safe Mode) on Windows 7 x64

    I am Running Windows 7 x64 and Firefox 3.6.15.
Since the day before yesterday I am unable to start Firefox. Even in Safe Mode it just won't start.
I click the Firefox icon, the mouse cursor changes to indicate the computer is doing something. After 3 seconds or so the mouse cursor again changes back to its default state. Nothing else happens.
The Task Manager in Windows shows me that an instance of firefox.exe is running, but I see no Firefox window.
Then if I again click to open Firefox, another firefox.exe instance starts, but again I see no Firefox window.
There isn't even a warning about one instance of Firefox already running.
    What I have tried:
I have uninstalled Firefox, removed all the Firefox files and folders from c:\users\username\AppData\Local and Roamning. I re-downloaded the 3.6.15 installation package and re-installed.
    No change.

    I have the same problem.
The only Firefox version working is the 64bit nightly build 6.0a1. No 32Bit version of Firefox works!. Chrome, Safari and Internet Explorer all work well.
Another Problem I have in this context is, that the Firefox Installer hangs in the tidy up step - even for the nightly 64Bit version. I have to kill the setup.exe process but the Installation seems to be completed.
Before my change to Win7 64Bit I had OpenText NFS Solo 14 installed on a 32Bit Windows7 and no Problems.
Is there a solution for this problem without uninstalling OpenText NFS Solo 14?
I need the NFS Server at work.
