Firefox 'opens containing folder' with...

...Leafpad here, which of course does not always helps /-}
Arch Linux x86_64, Firefox, i3 window manager. Up to date.
For an user and two profiles, the Mozilla browser opens "containing folder" with Leafpad (on both profiles). While for the other users Thunar is used.
Opening directories with a file-manager is desired (slightly more than with leafpad /^o). I most surely overlooked something and would appreciate if someone would see where : }
Hunting the forum allowed me to try e.g.: FrozenFox's solution, but I couldn't make it work:
Editing /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache AND ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list
user1 and user2 mimeapps.list's diff
- Using perl-file-mimeinfo
Assigning directories to Thunar as per the Wiki
$ mimeopen -d [FOLDER]
I made no change this way.
- Using xdg-open
I replaced busking-git with xdg-utils
$ xdg-mime query inode/directory
xdg-mime: unknown query type 'inode/directory
$ xdg-mime default Thunar.desktop inode/directory
$ xdg-mime query inode/directory
xdg-mime: unknown query type 'inode/directory' !?
Even if 'inode/directory=Thunar.desktop' is added to ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list
Note I get "unknown query type 'inode/directory" on both users' profiles.
Moved USER1's Firefox's 'mimeTypes.rdf' away, relaunched the browser but the 'opens containing folder with...' issue stands still.

Awesome
Thanks for that hint. This solves my problem:

I add the following line to .local/share/applications/mimeapps.list :
[Default Applications]
inode/directory=spacefm.desktop

  • Firefox 4.01 downloads files but the downloads windows greys out the "Open" and "Open containing folder" options and I can't trace the files

    Three days ago I upgraded to Firefox 4.01. I downloaded several files that were ok. Yesterday and today I downloaded one powerpoint file and a an apple *.dmg file.
    On the Download window these two files I can see with the total mb in size. However when I right click the file list in the Download window the "Open" and "Open containing folder" options are greyed out. What is more I cannot find these files anywhere on my computer when I use Windows Explorer to search.
    It seems that this happened after I tried to download a Firefox add on from http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/addons/64761/amazonassist-0.7.2.6-fx.xpi and my antivirus picked up the JS/Kryptik.AK trojan and terminated the connection. Is there a link with the problem I am experiencing?
    I use Windows 7 professional, Firefox 4.01

    You're welcome

  • How can I get firefox to highlight downloaded file when opening containing folder in linux mint 13

    When I use open containing folder to locate the download, the file is not highlighted which, given the size of my downloads folder, makes it a chore to locate the file (especially when you've forgotten what it's named).
    The file manager I'm using is nemo.
    I can manually run nemo with the full path to the file as the second parameter via the command line and it will highlight the file.
    Is there a config option somewhere that I can change to pass in the full file path and not just the containing folder path?

    I have the exact same problem.
    The source of the problem is that on Linux there is no single file manager.
    I tried to determine if firefox uses xdg-open or some other technique by searching the source but have not found it yet.
    If the proper call is used, for most file explorers this function can be realised.
    If xdg-open is used, it should be patched, which I also tried and has not yielded results yet.
    What would help me pick this up further is the answer to the question: what does firefox use to open the file in the download manager?

  • My downloads through Firefox don't actually download - "Open" and "Open containing folder" and greyed out when I right click the downloads in the downloads menu

    I've had this problem for quite a while. The downloads don't actually download. Nothing comes up in my downloads folder (and I've checked where they are supposed to be stored, I am checking the right place). In my downloads popup through the Firefox client, if I right click any download, both "Open" and "Open containing folder" are greyed out. I have tried using both Firefox 18 and the current Nightly client, and have reinstalled multiple times.

    Maybe this will look like a "take aspirin" suggestion, but based on experience so far, The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
    Note: ''This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.''
    To Reset Firefox do the following:
    #Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
    #Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
    #Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
    #Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

  • I cannot open downloaded files. The "Open" & "Open Containing Folder" options are grayed out, as well as the "Open" option. I have removed Kaspersky to sure.

    I cannot open downloaded files. The "Open" & "Open Containing Folder" options are grayed out. Cannot right-click on the files to open. File does not appear in the targeted folder. If "opened," the files provide an error message. Issue is primarily with MS Word.

    If "Open" and "Open Containing Folder" in the right-click context menu in the Download Manager window are grayed then that means that the file is no longer in the original download location.<br />
    It is possible that your anti-virus software is corrupting the downloaded files or otherwise interfering with downloading files by Firefox.<br />
    Try to disable the real-time (live) scanning of files in your anti-virus software temporarily to see if that makes downloading work.<br />

  • Open Containing Folder give empty Launch Application window

    Using CentOS 6.4, Firefox 24.2.0.
    Clicking the "Open Containing Folder" icon under Downloads only opens a "Launch Application" window, prompting me to "Choose an Application". It says "This link needs to be opened with an application." It seems normally the association gets made automatically, because I've never seen this before. What's the application I'm supposed to choose?

    Thanks for responding, guigs2. I've since blown away the VM and started again, so I don't have a screenshot. The new Firefox installation doesn't have the problem.

  • Opening a folder with an application in one click, and automating Terminal

    A forum member kindly recommended I move a question from 'Mac OS X Leopard' to this sub-forum as it was more appropriate to Unix:
    Firstly, is it possible to create a desktop/dock icon (or perhaps a Safari or FireFox bookmark) that opens a folder with a certain application? I'm doing a lot of web development and hoping to create handy buttons for opening up entire folders (Ruby on Rails projects) with only one click. At the moment, I have to find the folder and drag it to the textmate icon; if I had a 'open in textmate' button, that would make my work so much quicker, as I'm often changing between projects. It would be even better if I could have the button as a bookmark in my browser (where I spend most of my time).
    Secondly (probably related to the first question), is it possible to automate a process I follow every time I open up a Ruby on Rails project in Terminal (?);
    1. Load Terminal by clicking on the icon in the dock
    2. 'cd sites/rubyonrailsapp' (where 'rubyonrailsapp' is the rails application I want to load)
    3. 'mate .' (opens the entire /rubyonrails/ folder in TextMate)
    4. 'CMD + T' (to open up a new Terminal tab)
    5. 'gitk --all &' (to open up the Wish version control interface for the rails application)
    6. 'autotest' (to runs the tests in the rails application)
    7. 'CMD + T' (to open up another new Terminal tab, ready for me to use)
    If I could follow those steps with only one click, that would be amazing, so any suggestions are much appreciated (I just realised how many times-per-day I'm typing these commands).
    Cheers

    you can try this applescript. just copy it into the Script Editor and save it (1) as a script application that you can double-click, or (2) as a script that you can run from the script menu or quickkeys or etc. may need some tweaking...
    <pre class="jive-pre">tell application "Terminal"
    set cmd to "cd sites/rubyonrailsapp; mate ."
    do script cmd
    activate
    end tell
    tell application "System Events"
    keystroke "t" using command down
    end tell
    tell application "Terminal"
    set cmd to "gitk --all & autotest;"
    do script cmd
    activate
    end tell
    tell application "System Events"
    keystroke "t" using command down
    end tell</pre>
    to solve your other question, you'll probably need to script textmate. something like:
    <pre class="jive-pre">tell application "TextMate"
    open alias "path:to:folder"
    end tell</pre>
    I don't have textmate to test it on, however.
    sorry it's not a unix solution, but the task you're trying to accomplish fits better with applescript.

  • "Open containing folder" does not work

    After having hit the button "Open containing folder" in the download manager it seems that the computer is busy, but no window opens up.
    I am using Windows 64 bit (all updates) and Firefox 3.6.12.
    Same issue in uTorrent, so it's maybe Microsofts's fault?

    venemovil, thank you for your reply.
    Well, this behaviour is not restricted to a special folder. Regardless of where I save the file, it does not work. In the General tab I have set Firefox to ask me every time where to save the file. The folders are on different partitions and/or hard drives.
    This occured immediately after installing Windows 7 64 (I have only installed the very most important programs).

  • Cannot open file folder in download window. when RT click "open containing folder" it is not highlighted.

    Recently when I try to access my folders in my Download window I cannot access them. I tried right clicking to open "open containing folder" but it is not highlighted.
    Any suggestions...Thanks

    Hi ,
    According to your description, my understanding is that you could not edit documents with Office client application in SharePoint 2010.
    Let’s do a troubleshooting about this issue:
    1. Make sure that you have installed Office application on your machine.
    2. Which explorer did you use for your SharePoint. Please test it with IE 10 32-bit, compare the result.
    3. Please try to reset IE, compare the result.
    4. Add your SharePoint site into Trusted site on your IE options.
    5. Make sure all add-ons related to SharePoint are enable, special for SharePoint OpenDocument Class and SharePointOpenXMLDocuments.
    6. Since you used OWA for your SharePoint site, please try to disable OWA, then open documents with client application, compare the result.
    I hope this helps.
    Thanks,

  • FF4 on Linux, Open Containing Folder

    Using LinuxMint 10 (like Ubuntu 10.10). WIth FF 3.16, when I select "Open Containing Folder" (when a download is finished). FF opens the folder using Nautilus. Now FF4 always as to select an application to open the folder. Obviously I want to open the folder using Nautilus, so I type nautilus.
    Now the context menu Open or Open Containing Folder do absolutely nothing. Please note that on Windows, Open Containing Folder works correctly. It really opens the folder using Windows Explorer.
    Is it still possible in FF4 to Open the Containing folder? If yes, please show how. If not, please put it back the way it was in FF3.
    Thanks

    This does nothing.
    (Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder)
    Clicking on the "Open Containing Folder" does absolutely nothing. The action is just ignored. How can such a basic things could pass QA Test after such a lengthy beta test period? I found this defect right at the first day of use.

    I've did opening the file using
    try {

    if (Desktop.isDesktopSupported()) {
    desktop = Desktop.getDesktop();
    desktop.open(new File(path));
    } catch (IOException ioe) {
    ioe.printStackTrace();
    }Also able to open the directory by setting the "path" variable into the directory path
    But how to highlight the needed file after the Explorer is opened???Also, to be completely safe, you'd want to call Desktop#open() only if isDesktopSupported() returns true, otherwise you'll get a NullPointerException.
    if (Desktop.isSupported()) {
       try {
          Desktop.getDesktop().open(new File(path));

  • [SOLVED] "Open Containing Folder" Issue in Fluxbox

    Hello! I am fairly new to Arch so any help is greatly appreciated.
    I am using fluxbox as my window manager and thunar as my file manager.
    When I right click on a song in banshee and select "Open Containing Folder" the folder is opened in firefox which is fairly annoying. This also happens when I try to show a download in it's folder in google chrome. I am not able to select "Open Containing Folder" for a firefox download (it is grayed out).
    I am guessing the issue is that fluxbox doesn't know what file manager to use so it defaults to firefox for some reason. Is there a way to set default applications for fluxbox?
    Thanks in advance for any help!
